Searching the OED
How to use the quick search
The quick search bar can be found on the OED(Oxford English Dictionary)homepage and at the top of every entry page, and finds main dictionary entries, such as alphabet, break, xylophone. It also finds phrases and compounds listed within main entries, such as to look up or alphabet book, and different forms of spellings such as dictionaries.
Wildcard searches
A wildcard is a symbol which stands for any character. The question mark represents the occurrence of any one single character, and the asterisk represents the occurrence of any number of characters (or no character at all). Wildcards are useful if you do not know how to spell a word, or if you want to lined several terms beginning with the same root.
How to use the advanced search
An advanced search is a full search of the entire dictionary text which is for readers who have logged in or subscribed to the dictionary. Advanced search can be especially useful for very specific searches. You can use the search area functionality to search by each section of an entry. You can also use filters to narrow your search to match certain criteria.
Browsing by categories
Categories allow you to explore the dictionary through groupings of words in, for instance. a subject or from a particular origin. If you want to find all the Caribbean borrowings in English, or find the first word related to friend to enter the dictionary, this is the function for you.
Further explore your search by using the options that appear on the right-hand side of the results page.

When I was six, I embarrassed a boy in class by telling the teacher he’d wet himself. He sat far behind me but I smelled it, intensely. He was so upset that my grandmother was called into school. When we got home, she warned, “Never use your sense of smell for that again.” She explained that I, like her, had hereditary hyperosmia(遗传性嗅觉过敏), meaning I’m a super-smeller.
My husband Les and I both pursued medical careers. One day, I was struck by the smell of a patient. I later learned that she had diabetes (糖尿病) and what I smelled was raised ketones, a chemical produced by the liver (肝). I knew doctors wouldn’t accept my diagnoses (诊断), so I stayed quiet.
In 1982, before Les’s 32nd birthday, I smelt something strange on him. I thought it might be the air of the place he worked in. Twelve years later, in 1994, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It wasn’t until the last months of his life, more than 20 years later, that we discovered I could detect the disease in others, too.
We felt a responsibility to do something. We attended a lecture by Prof. Kunath, a neurobiologist. I asked, “Why is the smell of Parkinson’s not being used for early diagnosis ”He didn’t answer and we left, disappointed. But four months later, he called our home. He had found me after relaying my question to a colleague, who told him, “You must find her.” We began to work as a team to prove my theory.
When Les died in 2015, he made me promise I’d carry on the research. I spent time in labs, smelling sufferers skin oil on swabs (棉签). I could detect whether the person had Parkinson’s with 95% accuracy. This year, our research team published a breakthrough: a three-minute test that can detect the disease by running a swab along someone’s neck.
I’ve become known and delivered many lectures. I’m working on detecting cancers and tuberculosis. I never imagined, at 72, this would be my life’s work. I constantly think about how I lost my Les, but also how I finally fulfilled my promise.

A novel(新奇的) contract proposed by a researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas and his colleagues could help ease conflict between food-delivery platforms and restaurants with which they partner.
Food-delivery platforms(外卖平台) collect customer orders online, send them to restaurants and deliver the orders to customers. While this service helps restaurants expand their markets, it has disadvantages.
More business sounds good, but it comes at the cost of a commission (佣金) charged by the delivery platform. Besides, a large number of delivery orders might place restaurants under pressure. Delivery orders from the platforms can potentially harm the dine-in(就餐) experience by slowing down the kitchen, and the expectation of a long-time waiting could stop higher-profit dine-in customers from purchasing.
This motivated the researchers to identify an alternative contract to change the situation. They developed a model and found that different possible pairs of dine-in and delivery prices would produce higher or lower general income with certain prices achieving the maximum possible general income. The ideal solution trades off the increased income from delivery orders against the negative impact that those orders have on dine-in income, finding the right balance between the two.
“If the same company were to control both the dine-in and delivery channels, then it would jointly determine the respective (各自的) prices to maximize the general income,” said one of the researchers. “But of course, the prices are usually set by two different companies, and each seeks to maximize its own income. The key is to design an appropriately structured contract so that when each party maximizes its individual income, the resulting prices also maximize the general income.”
“Delivery platforms are widely seen as a necessity for many restaurants, despite the low profit on a delivery order. A restaurant not on a delivery platform risks losing an order to its competitors, and that loss could be a repeat customer,” said one of the researchers. “Food delivery is indeed expected to maintain a large market share. This makes it all the more urgent to improve the relationships between restaurants and platforms.”
28.What does the novel contract focus on
A.Showing restaurants how to profit from food-delivery platforms.
B.Demonstrating the development potential of food-delivery platforms.
C.Analyzing the conflict between food-delivery platforms and restaurants.
D.Improving the relationship between food-delivery platforms and restaurants.
29.How might the food-delivery orders affect the restaurants they work with
A.By introducing their competitors. B.By lengthening their service hours.
C.By changing their operating models. D.By driving up the price of their food.
30.Which could ease the conflict between food-delivery platforms and restaurants
A.Balanced dine-in and delivery services.
B.Reasonable dine-in and delivery prices.
C.Limiting the number of food-delivery orders.
D.Reducing commissions of food-delivery platforms.
31.What can we learn from the last paragraph about food-delivery platforms
A.They are highly profitable. B.They need to be regulated.
C.They have strong competitors. D.They are significant for restaurants.
D
Swot satellite is scheduled to be launched Thursday morning to conduct a comprehensive survey of Earth’s vital resource. By using advanced microwave radar technology it will collect height-surface measurements of oceans, lakes and rivers in high-definition detail over 90% of the globe. It’s really the first time to observe nearly all water on the planet’s surface.
The major mission is to explore how oceans help to minimize climate change by absorbing atmospheric heat and carbon dioxide in a natural process. Oceans are estimated to have absorbed more than 90% of the extra heat trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere by human-caused greenhouse gases Swot will scan the seas from the orbit and precisely measure fine differences in surface elevations (高度) around smaller currents and eddies (漩涡), where much of the oceans’ decrease of heat and carbon is believed to occur. “Studying the mechanism will help climate scientists answer a key question: What is the turning point at which oceans start releasing, rather than absorbing, huge amounts of heat back into the atmosphere and speed up global warming, rather than limiting it,” said Nadya Shiffer, Swot’s program scientist.
By comparison, earlier studies of water bodies relied on data of rivers or oceans taken at specific points, or from satellites that can only track measurements along a one-dimensional line, requiring scientists to fill in data gaps through extrapolation (外推法). Thanks to the radar instrument, Swot can scan through cloud cover and darkness over wide ranges of the Earth. This enables scientists to accurately map their observations in two dimensions regardless of weather or time of day and to cover large geographic areas far more quickly than was previously possible.
“Rather than giving us a line of elevations, it’s giving us a map of elevations, and that’s just a total game changer,” said Tamlin Pavelsky, Swot freshwater science leader.
32.What does the underlined expression “vital resource” in the first paragraph refer to
A.Technology. B.Climate. C.Oceans. D.Water.
33.What is the major mission of Swot
A.To explore the influences of greenhouse gases.
B.To explain the consequence of global warming.
C.To identify the causes of water absorbing heat and CO2.
D.To study the mechanism of oceans influencing climate.
34.What makes it possible for Swot to measure precisely
A.The high-definition computer. B.Advanced radar technology.
C.The three-dimensional image. D.An accurate map of elevations.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.A Solution to Climate Change
B.A Breakthrough in Space Travel
C.First Global Water Survey from Space
D.The Successful Launch of Swot Satellite

第二节读后续写
Jeff and I had many conversations during the year, but I will always remember the time he told me about his family. His father, a successful physician, was cold and strict in Jeff’s words. His father had even paved the way for Jeff to attend the same college from which he had graduated.
Jeff was twenty-seven and a successful business planner at a company—without a degree. His passion was skiing. When he graduated from high school, he decided to decline his father’s offer and, instead, to work with a ski patrol (滑雪巡逻队). With pain in his eyes, Jeff told me he still remembered the day when he told his father he was going to give up college and take a job at a ski resort.
Hearing Jeff’s decision, his father looked off into the distance. Then came the words that still echoed in Jeff’s mind: “You lazy kid. No son of mine is going to work with a ski patrol and does not attend college. I should have known you’d never amount to anything!” The two had not spoken since that conversation.
Later, he was back in the area near where he grew up and he certainly did not want his father to know he was attending college. He was doing this for himself, not for his father. He said it over and over again. Jeff’s sister had always remained supportive of Jeff’s decisions. She stayed in contact with their father, but Jeff had made her promise that she would not share any information about his life with him.
The day when the graduation ceremony came, I walked around talking to people before it started. I noticed a man with a confused expression.
“Excuse me,” he said as he politely approached me. “What is happening here today ”
“It’s graduation day,” I replied, smiling. “Well, that’s odd,” he said, “my daughter asked me to meet her at this address.” His eyes sparkled and he smiled. “Maybe she completed her associate’s degree and wanted to surprise me!” I helped him find a seat.

Dear Peter,
I’m Li Hua, one of your students. I’m writing to render what I’ve found about students’ interest in our English Corner.
Aimed at cultivating students’ interest in English learning, your English Corner undoubtedly offers us students a great platform to enhance our English proficiency. However, I’ve found students lacking enthusiasm to get involved lately. I think it would be a good idea to showcase the unique charm of English Corner by adding more interactive activities like English Drama Performance. Additionally, why not undertake a survey to know about what really interests students?
I would appreciate it if you could make a bit change, in which case, the English Corner will surely become one of the fondest memories rooted in our hearts.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1: As I left him, he said, "Thank you. By the way, my name's Dr. Holstrom." I froze in my tracks, realizing that I had just spoken to Jeff's father. I turned back and said, "Dr. Holstrom, I think you might be surprised to see someone you know today." He looked at me, puzzled, and I pointed towards the stage. He followed my gaze and saw Jeff, dressed in his graduation robes, waiting to receive his diploma. Dr. Holstrom's eyes widened in shock, and he stood up with his mouth wide open.
Paragraph 2: Jeff was the last person to cross the stage. As he walked up to receive his diploma, he saw his father standing in the audience. His heart raced, and he felt a mix of emotions: fear, anger, and a glimmer of hope.He took a deep breath and walked towards his father. "Dad,"he said, his voice trembling. Dr. Holstrom looked at him, his eyes filled with tears. "Jeff," he whispered. They stood there, looking at each other, the years of silence and anger melting away. Finally, Dr. Holstrom opened his arms, and Jeff stepped into them, hugging his father for the first time in years.
