What does your name mean
(An extract from ‘Names Can Be Fun’)
Do you know what y ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )our name means I know that my name, Vivienne, means ‘alive’ or ‘lively’.
If you don’t know w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hat your name means, there are books in your local library or school library listing names and their meanings.
It’s fun to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )look up the meaning of our names, although they don’t really mean much these days.
For example, the name ‘Brasil’ means ‘king’ or ‘kingly’. Today not many kings are called ‘Brasil’. But once upon a time there must have been a king named Brasil. The name ‘Boyd’ means ‘yellow hair’. Once upon a time there must have been a Boyd with fair hair. Once there must have been a Dale who lived in valley.
You may find that some names have different explanations. My daughter Belinda found three different meanings for her name in different books. The first gave the meaning ‘snake or serpent-like’; the second, ‘grace’; and the third, ‘beautiful or pretty’. Guess which meaning Belinda prefers! Where meanings vary, choose the one you like best. Parents usually look up the meaning of names before they decide on a name for their child. They want to make sure they don’t choose a name with an unpleasant meaning. I don’t think many parents today would choose a name like Jabez, which means ‘causing pain’. However, if parents really like a name, they will probably choose it, whatever it means.

The French call this d ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ay “Mardi Gras”, which means “Fat Tuesday”, because they had to use up any fatty food (such as milk, eggs and butter) before Lent. To do this, they made a kind of thin pancakes which you roll up (卷起) and eat with a little sugar. Today they will celebrate Mardi Gras by eating some thin pancakes.
In the UK, people ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )call it “Pancake Tuesday”, and they eat pancakes with lemon and sugar. They also have a few pancake races, where people run along the street, throwing a pancake in the air and catching it in a frying pan!
In Italy, Sh ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rove Tuesday is called “Carnevale” which means “goodbye to meat” and gives us the word Carnival. In many places, Carnival celebrations start several weeks before Lent. People eat fritters (special fried pastries(甜点)), and in Naples (那不勒斯) they have plenty of pasta dish called “Grande Lasagne di Carnevale”. One of the most famous Carnivals is in Venice, where people in expensive costumes and hand-made masks go to fashionable parties and dances.
In New Orlea ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ns, USA, the whole carnival season is called “Mardi Gras”, because it ends on Shrove Tuesday – but it starts on 6 January! There are lots of fancy-dress parties, street parades and food. Traditionally, everyone eats King cakes, which are round cakes covered in purple, green and gold sugar, with a tiny baby doll hidden inside the cake.
Pancake Tuesday, M ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ardi Gras or Carnival – the name doesn’t matter, because it’s always a great chance to have fun and enjoy huge amounts of delicious food.

IV. As every ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) parent knows, if you have children, you worry about them all the time. However, it seems that these days we’re worrying about our kids a lot more than we used to.
Kids in Brita ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )in used to walk to school every day in the past, but now parents don’t let their children go out on their own in case something bad happens to them. If children stay indoors all the time, they will become weak.
The danger of le ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tting your kids go out by themselves is smaller than you might think. If parents want their kids to grow up healthily, they shouldn’t protect them so much. Children need to make decisions themselves.
Over 27% of Briti ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sh children are now overweight, partly because they spend too much of their free time playing computer games and watching TV. But if kids never go outside, they can’t learn to look after themselves in the real world.
So far, we can lea ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rn that if you want happy and healthy kids, give them back their freedom.
