Imagine watching a movie in a foreign language or attending a lecture where the speaker talks fast, the subtitles (字幕) appear directly on your glasses. Isn’t that amazing
Recently, an ordinary yet “magical” pair of glasses—the AR Smart Glasses—has hit the market, which goes far beyond regular translation tools by offering hands-free, screen-free, real-time interactive translation.
The AR Smart Glasses are lightweight and comfortable to wear. They look just like regular glasses, but the “magic” hidden within them can’t be ignored (忽视).
The coolest feature of the AR Smart Glasses is their special translator. When people talk with someone, they can just point the glasses’ camera at the person they’re talking to, and the translation appears on the screen. When people visit a new city wearing AR Smart Glasses, they can simply look at any text, and a translation quickly appears in their view. If they get lost and need directions, the glasses can connect with GPS apps and show them translated directions right in front of their eyes. Even for language learners, it would be wonderful to practice a new language by seeing the words they hear being translated simultaneously (同步地). Learning a language can become quicker, easier, and more certain.
Since translation tools like the AR Smart Glasses help people understand words easily, some people start to question whether it’s still necessary to learn English, or any other foreign languages. In fact, knowing a new language is more than just that. When you speak a language fluently, you understand the way people talk, the jokes they make, and the special meanings behind their words. This helps you connect with people better and make real friends. Also, being able to speak more than one language makes you smarter. It helps you think in new ways and solve problems more easily. In a word, learning a language isn’t just about understanding words. More importantly, it’s about real connections with native speakers and a different point of view to see the world.
So, even though AR Smart Glasses and other cool tools can help with translations, the real joy and benefits of knowing a language come from speaking it fluently and understanding its culture.
1.What are the AR Smart Glasses used for
2.What do the AR Smart Glasses look like

Every day, from early in the morning until late in the evening, under the hot sun, the slaves (奴隶) picked cotton and put it in their sacks (麻袋). When finishing, Legree weighed it, and there was whipping (抽打) for the slaves that didn’t pick enough cotton. Tom learnt to pick cotton quickly.
One day a new beautiful woman, Cassy, arrived to pick cotton. Tom noticed that she was very fast. He also noticed that an older slave, Martha, was in pain. She was slow, and her sack was almost empty. Tom went near Martha, and silently put a lot of his cotton into her sack.
“No, don’t!” said the new woman. “They will punish you.” Just then Sambo arrived.
“What’s happening ” he said and he kicked Martha and whipped Tom across his face. The blood was running from his face. “Work faster!” But when he left, Tom quickly gave her some more of his cotton. Suddenly, the new woman put much cotton in Tom’s sack.
“Tom is going to make much trouble. He kept putting cotton into Martha’s sack,” Sambo told Legree. “Then we’ll have to teach him a lesson,” said Legree.
Slowly the tired slaves came into the room for the weighing of the sacks. First Legree weighed Tom’s sack, and it was enough. Martha’s sack was next. The weight was enough, but Legree shouted at her.
“You’re so lazy! This is not enough! Stay here and wait.” He finished weighing all the other sacks, and then turned to Tom.
“Come here,” said Legree. “I want to give you a better job than picking cotton, and you can start tonight: take this woman and whip her—you know how.”
“I’m sorry, Master,” said Tom. “I can’t do it.”
Legree whipped Tom across his face and then hit him with his hands many times. “There!” he said. “Now will you tell me you can’t do it ”
“Yes, Master,” said Tom, with blood running down his face. “I will work night and day, but I will never whip another person.”
“I bought you, and you’re mine, body and soul (灵魂),” Legree said, kicking Tom. “My soul isn’t yours, Master! You can’t buy it!”
“We’ll see.” said Legree. “Sambo, Quimbo, give him a lesson.”

“He will probably kill us when he is ready,” replied Ned.
“We have no reason to be afraid. I am sure that we will be able to leave or get away some time in the future.”
“We should take the chance now,” said Ned. In the end, I had to agree. I warned him that if we tried to get away and failed, the captain would never forgive us. We would never have another chance. “Tell me when you are ready,” I told him. However, the Nautilus dived into deep waters, and there was no chance to escape.
A day or two later, it came closer to the surface again.

Nemo opened a cupboard and I saw that it was full of gold bars. He filled a large box with them, closed it, and wrote an address on it. Four men carried the box out of the room. I went back to my room.

The book I would like to talk about is The Merchant of Venice (《威尼斯商人》). The book is a dramatic work by Shakespeare, a famous English writer in the16th century. It tells the story of conflicts and deals between merchants in Venice. The main characters are Bassanio, Portia, Shylock and Antonio.
The drama begins with Antonio, who helps Bassanio borrow money from Shylock, and then brings out other stories. Bassanio is a poor merchant. He needs money to follow his dream to marry Portia—a wealthy and beautiful lady. He asks his friend Antonio, also a merchant in Venice, for help. Antonio borrows the money from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. Shylock is a little mean and loves money very much. Antonio promises he will pay the money back in three months, otherwise Shylock will be allowed to cut one pound of flesh from his body.
Bassanio successfully wins Portia’s love but soon discovers that his friend Antonio cannot return the money to Shylock on time. Bassanio rushes back to Venice and joins the trial (审判). The reason why Antonio couldn’t return the money was that his ships were destroyed in a storm.
Portia, dressing up as a young lawyer, argues that Shylock’s contract (合同) allows him to take “one pound of flesh” but not a drop of blood. She points out that Shylock is only allowed to remove flesh, but not any blood, which is impossible.

The history of foods is never simple. Think of ice cream. Many people see it as a Western dessert. However, this sweet treat actually came from China! In the Zhou Dynasty, Chinese people began to store winter ice to enjoy in summer. In the Song Dynasty, people started to make binglao —it just means “ice cream” in English. It was a lot like modern ice cream. Folk tales have it that Emperor Huizong suffered from stomach pains after eating too much ice. In the Yuan Dynasty, Marco Polo tasted binglao and carried the idea all the way back to Europe. People there added heavy cream and new tastes. The rest is history!
Sometimes, totally different cultures have similar dishes. Iranians love a kind of flat bread, sangak. People in Shaanxi, China, love stone pancakes. These two look almost the same! People often compare roujiamo to hamburgers, a symbol of American food. Many people call it the “Chinese hamburger”. But in fact, arepas of Venezuela look more like the twin brother of roujiamo!

Sometimes people call each other “scared-cat,” but have you ever thought about this word When a cat is afraid, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense (紧张), and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream. Its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will defend itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. You can recall such memories in your daily life. Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. When we release our feelings or give way to our emotions freely, we can get into trouble with feelings. Have you ever said something in anger and regretted (后悔) it later Have you ever shouted at your friend, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut It isn’t always clever to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it’s smarter always to hide our feelings No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illness can be caused. It can actually be bad for your health.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don’t just go away. It’s as if you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you’d smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, maybe you’d see little fruit flies flying all over them. They will be rotten (腐烂).
So, emotions should be taken good care of and you should try to deal with your emotions in the way that works for you.

There are different kinds of parents in the world. In the Netherlands (荷兰), some parents do a strange thing to their children. It’s called “dropping”. It means parents drive their children into a forest at night and drop them off so they have to find their way back home all by themselves.
Does this sound like a terrible idea Dutch parents have reasons for doing this. They think children should learn to work out problems on their own. You may know that bees make delicious honey. But did you know that they keep us all alive
Every year on the twentieth of May, it’s World Bee Day. It’s a day to thank bees for all they do. Without bees, we wouldn’t have any food! When bees fly from plant to plant, they carry pollen (携带花粉). The pollen makes new plants grow. It is said that three-fourths of the world’s flowering plants and about 35 percent of the world’s food crops depend on bees and other animals to grow. Bees not only help flowers grow. They also help fruit and vegetables grow.
It’s also a day to learn more about the problems bees are facing. Loss of natural habitat (栖息地), getting sick from chemicals (化学物质) used on crops, and higher temperatures with climate change are making the number of bees drop, said the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
People are now looking to technology to help save the bees. One example is the robotic bee project called RoboRoyale, said Horizon magazine. The European Commission funds (投资) it. The project makes robot bees to help feed and look after the queen bee. This will get the queen bee to lay more eggs and make more bees.
So next time, let’s celebrate the day of the cute bees.

Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away on 6th February 2025.
Born in March 1926 in Guangdong province, Huang was the third child of his parents. He entered Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. After graduating, Huang started his lifelong career in China’s shipbuilding industry. In 1958, Huang was chosen to join the research team tasked with designing China’s first nuclear submarine.
In the beginning, there were poor basic conditions for Chinese scientists to develop such a hard task at that time. Besides, other countries didn’t share their technology with us.
Huang and other scientists searched newspapers and magazines for information. They finally came up with five plans after piecing together all the information they found and carefully studying two US submarine models.
In the following years, Huang and several other top engineers led the research and development for the nation’s first-generation nuclear submarines. After years of efforts, China finally built its first nuclear submarine—the first Type 091—in 1970, becoming the fifth nation to have such hardware. Huang’s name remained classified (机密的) until 1987 because of the sensitive nature of his work.

The Ghost moved slowly and silently towards him. And as it moved through the air, it scattered gloom.
The Ghost wore a black robe. The robe covered its head, its face and its body. The only thing visible was a hand. The Ghost neither spoke nor moved. Scrooge was terrified.
“Are you the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come ” asked Scrooge. The Ghost didn’t answer, but it pointed its hand in front of it. “You are going to show me the future,” Scrooge continued. “Am I right, Ghost ”
The Ghost nodded its head. That was the only answer Scrooge received.
“Ghost of the Future,” he said, “I am more afraid of you than of all the other ghosts. But because I want to be a better man, I will go with you. Please, speak to me.”
It didn’t reply. The hand pointed straight in front of them.

Everybody laughed.

A talk between Shenzhou- 14 astronauts and ASEAN teenagers started on November 1, 2022. The main talk place was in Beijing. The Shenzhou- 14 astronauts are Liu Yang, Chen Dong and Cai Xuzhe. The talk interested nearly 1, 000 teenagers from China and ASEAN member states. They talked with each other on the Internet.
Some students were interested in the three astronauts’ life in the space station. The astronaut answered their questions patiently. There is no gravity (重力) in space, so things are not as heavy as they are on Earth. When they drop something, it doesn’t fall to the floor. They eat and drink differently in space. They have special plates so that their food doesn’t fly away. In fact, they can drink hot water and eat fresh and hot food in the space station. Though they can see sunrises and sunsets every 90 minutes in space, they still get 7 hours of sleep every night.
The three astronauts also say exercise is important for them as well. Since there is no gravity their muscles (肌肉) become weak very quickly. To prevent this from happening, they have to exercise on special machines to train their muscles every day. However, it is not all hard work in space. When they are not doing science experiments, writing reports or exercising, they watch movies and read the news for fun.

Face the Sunshine
“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows.” is a popular saying. It encourages people to make the best of a situation, to see the “bright side” of things. It calls attention to the way sunflowers follow the sun during the day. People have known about this phenomenon (现象) for a long time. And scientists have discovered how this works. They have known why sunflowers keep their “faces” to the sunshine.
Sunflowers move and respond to their environment. These flowers actually face the sun as it rises in the east and follow it as it moves across the sky until it sets in the west. Just like people, these flowers depend on the daily rhythms (节奏) of the day and night. Both sunflowers and human beings wake up in the morning, follow the sun all day and then rest at night.
During the day, young sunflower plants track the sun from east to west. Their heads turn towards the sun. At night, the young plants turn east waiting for the sun to rise in the morning. Adult sunflowers don’t move. Once the flowers are open, they face only east. Scientists have discovered that this movement has to do with uneven (不均匀的) growth in the plant stems. One side of the stem gets bigger during the day, and at night the other side gets bigger. Certain genes control this growth. They respond to the light and cause the flowers to turn to face the sun.
Scientists have found that young sunflowers that follow the sun have more biomass (生物量)—that means that they get bigger. Adult plants facing the east get warmer. That attracts more bees and other insects that will help pollinate (授粉) the plants. This means that the plants can produce seeds and have a better chance of reproducing.
92.What do young sunflowers usually do during the day
93.Why do both sunflowers and human beings depend on the daily rhythms of the day and night
94.When do the young sunflower plants turn to face the east

1.What are the AR Smart Glasses used for
2.What do the AR Smart Glasses look like
3.How can language learners with the AR Smart Glasses practice a new language
4.Where does the real joy of learning a new language lie
5.With the development of translation tools, do you still want to learn new languages Why

“Are you unhappy on the Nautilus ” I asked Ned.
“I am very pleased that I have travelled under the water. However, it has to finish.”
“It will end one day,” I said. “I’m sure that Captain Nemo will let us go when he is ready.”

“That was Nicholas,” said the captain. “He lives on an island but spends more time in the water than on land.”
“Do you know him ” I asked.
“Why not, Dr. Aronnax ”
Nemo opened a cupboard and I saw that it was full of gold bars. He filled a large box with them, closed it, and wrote an address on it. Four men carried the box out of the room. I went back to my room.

YANGGE, one of Chinese folk arts, is a group performance that combines singing and dancing. It is known for its lively moves and rhythmic (有节奏的) beats, and this joyful art form has been enjoyed for generations.
Yangge is believed to have started as an activity for farmers during fieldwork. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, it became widely popular among the public. Today, different regions have developed their own styles. These styles reflect local life and keep a variety of cultural traditions alive.
Yangge performances play a key role in major celebrations and festivals. Dancers move to cheerful music played by folk instruments like the gong drum and suona. They dance in large groups, moving together to put on a lively show. Their costumes are bright, often red, green and yellow. They carry red ribbons, handkerchiefs or fans. It’s also common to see some people dressed up as characters from novels or folk tales, such as Sun Wukong and the couple in The Legend of White Snake.
Modern yangge has new possibilities. At this year’s Spring Festival Gala, a total of l6 robots, dressed in floral padded jackets (花棉袄), performed yangge together with human dancers. The show was named Yang Bot. It surprised the audience because the robots not only imitated human dance moves but also managed to spin handkerchiefs. (2025·江苏无锡·一模)Wang Wei (701-761), often called the “Poet Buddha”, was a famous Chinese poet, painter, and government official during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Born into a high family, he passed a difficult government exam at age 20 and worked for the emperor for many years.
Wang Wei is best known for his simple, peaceful poems about nature. His works often describe quiet scenes of mountains, rivers, and mist with few people. Experts (专家) say his poems show the beauty of the world while making readers think about what’s truly real.
But he wasn’t just an amazing poet; he was also a talented painter. He used ink and water in soft colours to create gentle, poetic pictures of nature. It was a new style of painting Chinese landscapes. Su Shi of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) once said that Wang Wei “had painting in his poetry” and “poetry in his painting”.
His most famous work, Wang River Collection, contains poems about traveling with his friend Pei Di. These poems have influenced writers for centuries, including modern writers who created new works based on his ideas. One poem called Weicheng Qu became a famous song called Three Repetitions on the Yangguan Tune, usually played on the guqin, an instrument Wang Wei probably played.
Scholars (学者) still study his poems today.

Food is a bridge between cultures. When foods cross borders, sweet things can happen.

54.When did people start to make binglao
55.Who brought the idea of binglao back to Europe
56.Why does the writer think that food is a bridge between cultures

In the forest, their children need to use GPS to find their way out. They need to deal with tiredness and hunger. They also need to know how to get help if they are lost.
Suja is an 11-year-old Dutch boy. When he finished his first “dropping”, he told The New York Times that he loved it. He said someday, when he has children, he wants them to do it as well. “It reminds you, even in very hard times, to keep walking, to keep going. I have never done that before.” he said. Parents always want the best for their kids. But everyone has their own way of parenting. Here are some popular types of parents. Which type do you like best
Dolphin parents
They just want their kids to be happy and healthy. They make sure their kids get enough sleep and exercise.
Tiger parents
They are quite strict with their children. They push their children so hard because they want their children to get the best grades in their class.
Lawnmower parents (割草机式父母)
Like a lawnmower that cuts grass, they deal with all the worries or troubles for their children. Their kids never learn to work out problems on their own.

“Lead on! ” said Scrooge.
The Ghost moved forwards. Scrooge followed in the shadow of its robe. And the robe carried him along. The city sprang up(突然出现)around them. There they were, in the heart of it. The Ghost stopped beside some businessmen at the Stock Exchange. His hand was pointing to them, so Scrooge listened to their conversation.
“I only know he’s dead,” said a great fat man.
“When did he die ” asked another.
“Last night, I think.”
“What was the matter with him ” asked a third.
“God knows,” said the first, with a yawn.
“What has he done with his money ” asked a red-faced gentleman.
“I don’t know,” said the great fat man, yawning again. “He hasn’t left it to me. That’s all I know.”
Everybody laughed.
“It will be a very small funeral” said the great fat man. “I don’t think anybody will go to it.”
Scrooge knew the men. And he looked towards the Ghost for an explanation. He didn’t understand why this conversation was important. But he knew it must be.

A high school student from the Philippines thought the talk was creative and interesting. It made him know more about the life of astronauts. He knew the beauty of our planet well from the talk, too.

Life is like water
There was a man who couldn’t achieve his ambition. So he was recommended to visit a sage (圣人).
The sage silently scooped up the water and asked, “What is the shape of the water ” The sage poured the water into a glass before the man could answer. The man answered, “I know water is like a glass.” The sage said nothing and poured the water into the vase nearby. The man realized it, “I know water is like a vase.” The sage shook his head, gently carried the vase in both hands and poured the water into a pot filled with sand. The clear water disappeared into the sand.
The sage said, “Look, the water died away like this. This is a lifetime!”
The man said happily, “I know you want to tell me that the society is like various containers. So people should be like water. When you are in a certain container, you will become its shape and nothing can change!”
“Yes and no,” the sage said. The sage went out of the house, followed by the man. Under the eaves (屋檐), the sage bent over, touched the flagstone steps for a while and stopped. The man reached out his hand to where the sage had just touched and felt a concave (凹面), but he didn’t know what secret the concave in the flagstone steps hid.
The sage said, “On rainy days, the rainwater would fall from the eaves, so the concave is the result the water falls.”
The man got inspired (启发) suddenly. He said, “I understand people may be put into the regular containers, but they should be like the little drop of water, holing the hard flagstones until changing the containers.”
The sage said, “Right. This concave will turn into a hole!”

The Xiaoxitian scenic area (景区) in Xixian County Linfen City, Shanxi Province is one of the shooting locations of the popular game “Black Myth: Wukong”. The famous scene “Seeing the future, why not worship ” in the game is set here. In this scenic area, there are many extremely beautiful painted sculptures in the Mahavira Hall. These may have inspired the game’s scene design.
Recently, a new kind of mythology (神话) has been gaining popularity among young people, especially those who love video games and animation. It’s called “Black Myth: Wukong”. He still has powerful abilities, but he also faces many challenges. The story of Wukong takes place in a magical world full of strange creatures and exciting adventures. It combines traditional Chinese culture with modern elements. Many young people find this world fascinating and enjoy exploring it through video games, animations, and even comic books.
The Xiaoxitian scenic area is not very large. The core scenic spot, the Mahavira Hall, is only 169.6 square meters. But inside this hall, there are more than 1,900 painted sculptures of different sizes, ranging from the largest three meters tall to the smallest as small as a thumb. After nearly four hundred years, these sculptures are still intact (完好的) and look brand new.
It is known as the “Museum of Hanging Sculpture Art in China”. Its unique artistic value and connection with the popular game have made the Xiaoxitian scenic area attract a large number of tourists. Shenzhen is the first city in the country to require schools to organize daily PE for students at the compulsory education (义务教育) level.
Buxin Primary School in Luohu District started using a “3+1+1” model, which includes three regular PE classes, one music-based exercise class, and one sports game class to make sure of five PE classes per week.
Because there aren’t enough PE teachers to teach all the new classes, the school had to ask teachers from other subject areas to lead many of the PE classes.
Liu Xunhua, a Chinese-language teacher at the school, has taken on the role of a part-time PE teacher. Liu leads students in activities such as jump rope and jumping jacks (开合跳).
“Everything is for the health of the students, and we support the new measure.” said Liu. Like other nonprofessional (非专业的) PE teachers, Liu took PE training classes and found chances to learn from professional PE teachers.
Chen Xinru, a grade 8 student from Xin’an Middle School, said that a daily PE class has many advantages and helps her a lot. “When I am tired, I can relax by running or playing basketball and I can become more focused in class,” said Chen.

One year ago, I asked a worker to help me repair my old house. He had a bad first day of the job. His car broke down on the way, and then he found he had left his tools for work at home and his wife telephoned to say his son had a bad cold. While I drove him home, he was silent all the way. When we arrived, he invited me to meet his family.
As we walked towards the front door, he stopped at a small tree and touched the tree with his hands.
When we opened the door, I was very surprised to see that the worker wore a big smile. It seemed that he changed into another person. He hugged his son and gave his wife a kiss. After a while, when he walked to the car, I asked him why he had touched the tree.
“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he answered. “Sometimes I have trouble with my job, but one thing is for sure—it doesn’t belong to my wife or my son. So I just hang up the trouble on the tree every night when I come home. Then the next morning I pick it up. However, when I pick it up, I hardly remember what I put the night before.”

It is easy for many people to catch a cold in spring or fall. It makes us wonder since scientists can send a man to the moon, why they can’t find a cure for common colds. The answer is easy — there are actually (实际上) many different cold viruses (病毒). You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a cure for each one.
When a virus gets into your body, your body works hard to fight against it. Blood rushes to your nose and causes a block in it, so you feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but your body is actually eating the virus. Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny (流鼻涕的) nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells (细胞). You may feel very uncomfortable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people do different things to deal with colds. In the United States, for example, people might have chicken soup to help them get over the cold. In other places, people take medicine to stop different symptoms (症状) of colds.
There is one interesting thing to note — some scientists say taking medicine when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this:
It takes about one week to get over a cold if you don’t take medicine, but it takes only about seven days to get over a cold if you take medicine.

Remember to eat your fruits and vegetables. They might just improve your memory.
Scientists have found out several kinds of products—including vegetables which have green leaves, orange and red vegetables, are good for memory.
Researchers at Harvard University have found that men who insist on eating those fruits and vegetables over a period of 20 years were more likely to have better memory skills than those who seldom eat them. The study followed about 27,800 men in health care jobs over 20 years, and surveyed them on their diets and other health-related topics every four years.
Toward the end of the study, the researchers started asking them questions about their memory. For example, “Do you have more trouble than usual remembering a short list of things, such as a shopping list ” or “Do you have more trouble than usual following a group conversation or a story in a TV program because of your memory ” “A growing number of “yes” answers to such questions can mean their memory is going down,” the researchers said.
The participants (参与者) were divided into five groups, based on how many servings (分量) of vegetables and fruits they got each day, from six servings in the healthiest group to just two servings. The six-serving eaters were 34 percent less likely to be forgetful. And the results were even better if the men happened to eat carotenoids (类胡萝卜素)—rich vegetables, such as carrots and pumpkins. Besides, those who drank orange juice often were 47 percent less likely to become forgetful, compared with those who drank orange juice less than once a month.
“Our studies provide further evidence that diet choices can be important to keep your brain healthy,” researchers said.

The Merchant of Venice is the important early works of Shakespeare, which is a comedy with a great satire (讽刺). In the play Shakespeare not only speaks highly of love and friendship, but also mirrors the social background of that time.
Antonio had a friend named Bassanio who spent money without limitation. As a result, he ran out of his wealth soon. Bassanio fell in love with Portia, but he was required to pay a large amount of money. So he went to Antonio for help. Antonio is a wealthy merchant but he didn’t have so much cash. Antonio went to Shylock, a moneylender, for help.
Having been scolded (责备) by Antonio for being cruel and greedy, Shylock hated him. However, he agreed to lend him the money only if Antonio would allow him to take a pound of his flesh when he could not repay him within three months. At last Antonio agreed to the contract. But unluckily, Antonio lost all his ships at sea. He was not able to pay back to Shylock, and the Jew went to court of Venice to carry out his deal.
To save Antonio’s life, Portia dressed up as a famous lawyer. According to the contract, she agreed to Shylock’s request, but insisted a pound of meat must be cut by just a pound of flesh, no more and no less. At the same time, he was not allowed to let any of Antonio’s blood drop. The wise judge announced that according to the law if anyone tried to kill a citizen of Venice, everything he owned should be taken away. Shylock would rather die if all his money and goods were taken away. Finally, Antonio gave up his part of Shylock’s money on condition that Shylock should leave the money to his own daughter upon his death. The cruel moneylender had to agree.

A person who writes music is known as a composer. A composer thinks of a musical idea and writes it on paper for others to read. Instead of writing words, a composer uses musical notation (记号). Other people can read the notes and play them. When they do, they’re playing music that came from the composer’s imagination.
Beethoven was a famous German composer. He was born in 1770 in Bonn and began learning the piano when he was only four. He also learned to play the violin. Beethoven visited Vienna, which was a very musical city, in 1787. Two other famous composers lived in Vienna at that time. Wolfgang Mozart and Joseph Haydn met Beethoven and gave his music high praise. Beethoven made friends in Vienna and returned there in 1792. He studied music with Haydn and lived in Vienna for the rest of his life.
Beethoven was known as a great pianist, but he wanted to compose his own music. He always seemed to have musical ideas in his head. His notebooks show how hard he worked to get the music just right. He often wrote and then revised his music by scratching it out (勾划), so it is possible for us to see how he was thinking about the music.
During the late 1790s, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. At first it was difficult for him to hear people and talk with them. Even when he became completely deaf, he did not stop creating music, however. He heard music in his mind even though he couldn’t hear it with his ears.
Most people have heard of Beethoven’s Symphony (交响乐) No. 5, but they may not know he wrote it when he was growing deaf. A symphony is a long piece of music for orchestra (交响乐团). Symphony No. 5 starts like this: ta-ta-ta-TUM. Beethoven used this pattern over and over in his symphony. Try saying it aloud two times: ta-ta-ta-TUM, ta-ta-ta-TUM.

Reading books brings with it numerous benefits giving people the chance to explore new worlds and meet new people both real and imagined. It expands our knowledge and understanding of the world around us and those far away.
To celebrate the wonderment of books and those that make them come to life, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day in 1995. However, it got its start long before that in Spain.
Setting a day to celebrate books traces its beginnings to Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés. In 1922, he came up with the idea as a way to honor fellow countryman author Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later, the first celebration took place on 7 October, Cervantes’ birthday, but was moved to 23 April, the date of his death, in 1930.
In 1995, the UNESCO General Conference decided to pay respect to authors and books world-wide as a way of encouraging everyone to access books. Choosing 23 April seemed a reasonable choice, besides being the date of Cervante’s death, it also happens to be the date William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died, among other prominent authors. Moreover, several distinguished authors were born on 23 April making it a symbolic date in the world literature.
Annually since 2001, one city around the world is chosen to be the UNESCO World Book Capital for a year. The chosen city is tasked with carrying out activities to encourage “a culture of reading and spreading its values in all ages and population groups in and out of the national borders.”

(2025·江苏苏州·一模)Terrible weather events are harming the planet, and experts warn of even greater results to come. The sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting (融化) caused by climate change have increased much in the last ten years. So they have pushed down the number of polar bears and seals while polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting seals.
According to the data from WMO, temperatures on the Antarctica (南极洲) just hit 18.3℃, which is higher than the record of 17.59℃ in March, 2015. Moreover, temperatures in this area have warmed about 3℃ over the last 50 years. Although such temperatures might be considered pleasant for a picnic or a hiking trip, this is the Antarctica we are talking about. It is home to the most inhospitable (不适宜居住的) environment on the planet because it is supposed to be an extremely cold place. In fact, the average temperature of the continent’s central area is -57℃.
Besides, many places are experiencing the extreme weather. Australia is undergoing its worst drought (干旱) since the 1930s, leaving bush fires burning so long and causing many deaths. Meanwhile in Europe, crops in the northwest are suffering the driest weather in the past 80 years. Recently West Texas in America has also gone through its worst drought in more than 70 years, while floods have hit Eastern and Southern China.
“Climate change is bad for us human beings, which causes direct health problems. I’m afraid there will be more common events like the one that 30,000 to 50,000 persons died in Europe in 2003 due to the heat wave there,” Professor Schwartz said. “It will also cause more air pollution, diseases and lack of clean water and so on.”
159.What brings down the number of polar bears according to this passage
160.What forms of extreme weather are mentioned in the passage
161.Please write another form of extreme weather you know about. What can we do to prevent it
