In 1916,two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn,N.Y.—Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead,Colo.to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise.Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted:The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruffs granddaughter.
Why did they go then Well, they wanted to do something useful.Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold.In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden's book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls'decision to go to Elkhead.A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed ( 牵 涉 ) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstoms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy's return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism ( 坚 忍 ) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff,on her horse, looking down from a hill top:"When the sun slipped behind the mountains,it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.

Palaces are known for their beauty and splendor, but they offer little protection against attacks. It is easy to defend a fortress(堡垒),but fortresses are not designed with the comfort of
4
a king or queen in mind. When it comes to structures that are both fancy and well-defended,the classic European castle is the best example of design.Across the ages, castles changed, developed, and eventually fell out of use,but they still command the fascination of our culture
Castles were originally built in England by Norman invaders. In 1066.As William the Conqueror advanced through England,he defended key positions to secure the land he had taken. The castles he built allowed the Norman lords to draw back to safety when threatened by English rebellion(叛乱).Castles also served as bases of operation for offensive attacks.Soldiers were gathered, organized around, and deployed(部署)from castles. In this way castles served both offensive and defensive roles in military operations.
Not limited to military(军事的)purposes, castles also served as offices from which the lord would administer control over his kingdom. That is to say,the lord of the land would hold court in his castle. Those that were socially beneath the lord would come to report the affairs of the lands that they governed and pay tribute to the lord. They would address conflicts, handle business, feast, and enjoy festivities,In this way castles served as important social centers in medieval England.Castles also served as symbols of power.Built on important and noticeable sites overlooking the surrounding areas, castles always appeared in the background of many peasants and served as a daily reminder of the lords strength.
Now,castles no longer serve their original purposes. However, the remaining castles receive millions of visitors each year from those who wish to experience the glory of a time long passed.

Online games are very popular among people. They make a large amount of money and have a large user base, including lots of teenagers. But now,new rules on online games have been introduced, which are aimed at fighting against addiction among underage players.
Adult players need to spend most of their time paying attention to work and family, and cannot play games as often as they want. However, underage players have more spare time, but less responsibility and self-control.Children without a clear purpose in life, where there is less family education and school management, might easily become addicted to all kinds of online games and online novels.
The most direct impact of an addiction to online games among underage play ers is on their psychological(心理)health.According to psychologists, people seriously addicted to games can become anxious, bad tempered, and avoid responsibility.
However,Chinese parents are more worried that their children will lack interest in study ing if they become addicted to online games,as academic success is important for students. Additionally, when their children become addicted to such games, most parents do not know how to deal with the situation.
To carry out the new rules to the best effect, more specific issues need to be solved, such as managing foreign online games, ensuring that facial recognition technologies(脸部识别技术) used by games companies have the wanted effect or making sure online game providers can only offer one-hour services to underage players on Saturdays and Sundays. While there are always loopholes(漏洞)in new rules, authorities should act quickly to close them.
There is no doubt that online games have harmful effects on young people. It is not acceptable for a large number of teenagers or those even younger to become addicted to these games.
32.What's the purpose of the new rules on online games
A.To raise awareness of Internet safety.
B.To bring in new computer programs.
C.To reduce the grown-up user base.
D.To prevent the teenagers'addiction.
33.Why are underage players addicted to online games more easily
A.They can learn more knowledge on the Internet.
B.They have more free time and less self-control.
C.They have purposes in life but lack higher education.
D.They maintain a sense of curiosity about the Internet.
34.What problem has to be solved to ensure the effect of the new rules
A.How to reduce parents'anxiety about kids'study.
B.How to find loopholes in the popular online games.
6
C.How to control the service time of online game providers.
D.How to invent a facial recognition game for young players.
35.What is the author's attitude to the new rules
A.Supportive. B.Negative.
C.Confused. D.Uninterested.

How similar are language and music
Language is part of our daily lives,no matter where we live in the world.Similarly, music is part of many people's lives, whether it is played on the radio on your drive to work or played in a concert. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture. 36
● Both have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. 37 By writing pieces of music,we are able to share experiences and emotions through time.We can also hear the composition of musicians who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite exciting.
38
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use.
In the same way,we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
Both share emotion.
39 Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy.Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. 40 I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.
A.Both vary with culture.
B.Both have their own different features.
C.Here are some of their similarities.
D.How doyou know that I am angry
E.We use language to express our thoughts.
F.Similarly,we use notes to keep a record of music.

In the digital age,Artificial Intelligence has witnessed applications in various fields, with no exception in study.
Personally,I think intelligent learning apps have improved learning efficiency. Not only can they provide learning approaches tailored to individuals but also offer 24/7

access to numerous educational resources, such as targeted quizzes and instant
feedback. However, the over-use of them can lead to a decline in critical thinking and harm to our physical health. What's worse, with our data being collected and analyzed, there's always a risk of it being leaked and misused.
To make the best of these double-edged swords,I propose we should use them in a wise way,not depending on them too much, properly setting screen time limits and
keeping an eye on personal information. As teenagers,it's crucial that we navigate this digital world with awareness and responsibility.
