二、阅读理解
If you want to convince the boss you deserve a pay rise or promotion, the solution could be simple — eat the same food as he or she does. Psychologists have discovered managers are much more likely to instantly trust us if we choose the same dishes as them.
During experiments, discussions over wages and work conditions were much more successful if both sides chose to snack on the same treats. And shoppers were much more likely to buy a product advertised on TV by someone eating a similar food to them at the time.
The reason is thought to be the so-called similarity attraction theory — where people tend to like others who have similar tastes or habits to themselves. And this is believed to be one of the first studies highlighting the role of food in this relationship. Researchers at Chicago University in the US conducted a series of experiments to examine food's role in earning trust.
In a test, participants were told to watch TV—where someone pretending to be a member of the public praised a certain product. The volunteers were given Kit Kat bars to bite, while the TV person ate either a Kit Kat or grapes as they talked.
The results showed viewers were much more likely to express an interest in buying the product if the TV showed the other person eating a Kit Kat too.
The researchers added, "Although similarity in food consumption is not a sign of whether two people will get along, we find consumers treat this as such. They feel more trusting of those who consume things as they do. It means people can immediately begin to feel friendship and develop a bond, leading to smoother transactions from the start."
Harley Street psychologist Dr Lucy Atcheson said it was already known that wearing similar clothes could instantly create trust. But this was the first report that food had the same effect. She said, "This is really interesting. It makes sense as people feel they have common ground and can trust the other person. That means negotiations (谈判) are more likely to be successful."
6.According to the passage, customers are likely to buy a product from a dealer who _________.
A.has the same taste as them B.advertises his products on TV
C.reduces the price of his products D.pays attention to the quality of his products

A.bosses like employees that have the same taste as them
B.food plays an important role in earning people's trust
C.people who have similar tastes to their bosses earn more
D.people have less interest in buying products advertised on TV
8.What can be inferred from Paragraph 6
A.People who eat similar food are more likely to trust each other.
B.People will get along with each other if they like to eat similar things.
C.The effect of wearing similar clothes hasn't been proved by researchers.
D.People are less likely to make friends with those wearing the same clothes as them.
9.Which of the following sayings can be an example of the similarity attraction theory
A.Honesty is the best policy. B.All good things come to an end.
C.Birds of a feather flock together. D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

二、阅读理解
Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport's rules require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. It's this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says, According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport's strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
6.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes
A. They must run long distances.
B. They are qualified for the marathon.
C. They have to follow special rules.
D. They are good at swinging their legs.
7.What advantage does race walking have over running
A. It's more popular at the Olympics.
B. It's less challenging physically.
C. It's more effective in body building.
D. It's less likely to cause knee injuries.
8.What is Dr. Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking
A. Getting experts' opinions.
B. Having a medical checkup.
C. Hiring an experienced coach.
D. Doing regular exercise.
9.Which word best describes the author's attitude to race walking
A. Skeptical. B. Objective. C. Tolerant. D. Conservative.
三、七选五
Tips for Successful Gift Giving
Good gift giving is an art. The perfect present can lighten one's mood or improve a relationship. Whatever the occasion, gift giving is a social ritual that requires careful thought and consideration. ①_____
Don't add a small gift to a big gift. When we receive gifts in a bundle, we tend to unconsciously average out their value, so a small gift tacked (附加) onto a big one will hurt the latter's impact. ②_____
③_____ Taking a dream vacation or seeing your favourite artist in a concert will give you memories that last forever. Experiences often have more thought going into them, and they create more vivid memories. We might remember the tablet that a friend or a loved one has bought us, but not as much as a two-week holiday to Florida—the memories and the emotional attachment to experiences are greater than to physical objects.
Think like the receiver. ④_____ That might seem obvious, but it happens far less than we'd like. People tend to use gifts as jokes and encouragements to change one's ways, or to signal something about themselves rather than providing utility or happiness for the receiver.
Remember there's a reason why we say that it's the thought that counts. ⑤_____ Most people don't want lots of money spent on them-they just want you to think about them, and that can be done in lots of easy ways.
A. Give things you like best.
B. So there are a set of rules to follow.
C. Give experiences rather than things.
D. Don't forget why you are giving gifts.
E. Buy things your receiver would buy for themselves.
F. When it comes to gift giving, remember that sometimes less is more.
G. When you give others gifts, never forget to choose the expensive things.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Last summer when my family was on the road to Montana, we arrived in Great Falls late one night. The kids had fallen asleep in the car, so my husband went and checked in while I stayed with the kids. When he returned with the room keys, we woke up our children and took them out of the car, through the hotel, up the elevators and into our guest room. We kept the room dark, leaving only the entry light on, and quickly put the kids into bed hoping they'd drift off to sleep.
My husband went to put our water in the mini-fridge only to notice some beers. "That's strange", he said and I agreed, but having discovered left-behind drinks in hotel fridges in the past I didn't think much about it. I figured the housekeepers had forgotten to check it. In the meantime, my husband ran to the store and I went into the bathroom to get ready for bed. As I washed my face. I looked down to see cardboard beer containers in the trash. I felt my heart begin to pound. We were in someone else's room!
Now panicked, I checked the closet. Nothing. I then went to the dresser drawers. Nothing. My eyes scanned the door room's floor and there it was: A black bag that looked like one of ours. But it wasn't!
I immediately called the front desk and the waitress in charge responded with an "Oh, my God! This is not good!"
By now the kids were wide-awake, jumping on the beds as I was trying to put all of our things back into our oversized suitcase. Just while we were packing our things, I heard someone unlocking the door, which made my heart beat wildly.

Winning one professional tennis championship is difficult. Imagine winning 100 of them! Swiss tennis star Roger Federer just did that on March 2, 2019.
Federer collected his 100th trophy (奖杯) from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) by winning the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. He beat Stefanos Tsitsipas, a young player from Greece. "Reaching 100 is absolutely a dream come true for me," he said at the presentation ceremony. "I'm so happy I am still playing. It's been a long, wonderful journey."
Federer's journey started in 2001. In the Milan Indoor final, Federer beat Frenchman Julien Boutter and won his first ATP title at age 20. After the match, the media described him as "one of the up-and-coming players on the men's tennis scene".
For most of his 23 years as a professional athlete, Federer has managed to keep a good image, both on and off the court. But sometimes he doubted himself and his physical abilities. He recently said that he had been suffering a hand injury since 2016." I hurt my hand in training. It's had more consequences than I thought," Federer told SonntagsZeitung, a German newspaper.
Federer is driven to continue by his perseverance and love of the game. "You need to be stubborn, and believe diligence is going to pay off," he told Tennis World USA. His determination has clearly paid off. He's now compared to legendary US player Jimmy Connors, who set the record of 109 titles. The works of Shakespeare and Wordsworth are "rocket boosters" to the brain and better therapy than self-help books, researchers will say this week.
Scientists, psychologists and English academics at the University of Liverpool have found that reading the works of the Bard and other classical writers has a beneficial effect on the mind, catches readers" attention and causes moments of self-reflection.
Using scanners, they monitored the brain activity of volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T. S. Eliot and others.
They then " translated" the texts into more "straightforward", modem language and again monitored the readers" brains as they read the words.
Scans showed that the more "challenging" prose and poetry set off far more electrical activity in the brain than the more pedestrian versions.
Scientists were able to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and record how it "lit up" as the readers encountered unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentence structures.
This "lighting up" of the mind lasts longer than the initial electrical spark, shifting the brain to a higher gear, and encouraging further reading.
The research also found that reading poetry, in particular, increases activity in the right hemisphere (半球) of the brain, an area concerned with "autobiographical memory" , helping the readers to reflect on and reappraise (重新评估) their own experiences in light of what they have read. The academics said this meant the classics were more useful than self-help books.
Philip Davis, an English professor who has worked on the study with the university"s magnetic resonance centre, will tell a conference this week: Serious literature acts like a rocket booster to the brain.
The research shows the power of literature to shift mental pathways, to create new thoughts, shapes and connections in the young and the elderly alike.

A.They set off far less electrical activity in the brain.
B.They light up the mind shorter than the initial electrical spark.

7.How did the scientists and experts carry out the experiment
A.By scanning the readers" brain activity. B.By reading works of different writers.
C.By lighting up the activity of the brains. D.By investigating the habits of the readers.
8.What can we conclude according to the research
A.Self-help books are more valuable than classics.
B.Serious literature lights up the mind shorter than ordinary versions.
C.The right hemisphere of the brain is related to autobiographical memory.
D.literature has a beneficial effect only on the mind of the young.

二、阅读理解
For those who can stomach it , working out before breakfast may be more beneficial for health than eating first, according to a study of meal timing and physical activity.
Athletes and scientists have long known that meal timing affects performance. However, far less has been known about how meal timing and exercise might affect general health.
To find out, British scientists conducted a study. They first found 10 overweight and inactive but otherwise healthy young men, whose lifestyles are, for better and worse, representative of those of most of us. They tested the men's fitness and resting (新陈代谢的) rates and took samples (样品) of their blood and fat tissue.
Then, on two separate morning visits to the scientists' lab, each man walked for an hour at an average speed that, in theory, should allow his body to rely mainly on fat for fuel. Before one of these workouts, the men skipped breakfast, meaning that they exercised on a completely empty stomach after a long overnight fast (禁食期). On the other occasion, they ate a rich morning meal about two hours before they started walking.
Just before and an hour after each workout, the scientists took additional samples of the men's blood and fat tissue.
Then they compared the samples. There were considerable differences. Most obviously, the men displayed lower blood sugar levels at the start of their workouts when they had skipped breakfast than when they had eaten. As a result, they burned more fat during walks on an empty stomach than when they had eaten first. On the other hand, they burned slightly more calories (卡路里), on average, during the workout after breakfast than after fasting.
But it was the effects deep within the fat cells that may have been the most significant, the researchers found. Multiple genes behaved differently, depending on whether someone had eaten or not before walking. Many of these genes produce proteins (蛋白质) that can improve blood sugar regulation and insulin (胰岛素) levels throughout the body and so are associated with improved metabolic health. These genes were much more active when the men had fasted before exercise than when they had breakfasted.
The implication of these results is that to gain the greatest health benefits from exercise, it may be wise to skip eating first.
6. The underlined expression "stomach it"in Paragraph 1 most probably means "
A. digest the meal easily.
B. manage without breakfast.
C. decide wisely what to eat.

A. Their lifestyles were typical of ordinary people.
B. Their lack of exercise led to overweight.
C. They could walk at an average speed.
D. They had slow metabolic rates.
8. What happened to those who ate breakfast before exercise
A. They successfully lost weight.
B. They consumed a bit more calories.
C. They burned more fat on average.
D. They displayed higher insulin levels.
9. What could be learned from the research
A. workout after breakfast improves gene performances.
B. Too much workout often slows metabolic rates.
C. Lifestyle is not as important as morning exercise.
D. Physical exercise before breakfast is better for health.
三、七选五
Music is an art form which deals with the representation of emotion through the medium of sound. It can have a physical effect on us because it is closely linked with emotion, perhaps even more than the abstract words. The first reason why people listen to music is to adjust their emotional slate. ①_____
Numerous studies show us that there's no doubt that music can affect our mood state and stress level. ②_____ For example, they have found that background music shuts out distractions. It calms them before a large task and then they can stay focused for longer. Also, it can help their creativity and make studying more enjoyable.
③_____ Firstly, it depends on what the task is. The more difficult the challenge is, the more likely background music will interrupt the learning process. For less challenging learning tasks, music can greatly assist in providing a positive learning state. Secondly, it depends on the characteristics of the music we'll come to in a moment. And thirdly, extroverts (性格外向者) enjoy and often require more external stimulation (刺激) and are likely to handle background noise better than those who are quiet and shy.
Actually, it's not the genre (类型) of music, but the natural musical characteristics that aid or disrupt study. One of these characteristics is the tempo (拍子). The recommended tempo for background music is in the range of 70 to 110 beats per minute, slightly faster than the heartbeat when we are at rest. ④_____ And very slow music lowers the heartbeat, creating a state that might be too relaxed for study purposes.
In addition, lyrics (歌词) are the most distracting aspect of listening to background music. ⑤_____ More particularly, studies have found that the most distracting background music is fast and familiar vocal music, chosen and liked by the listener.

五、读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ten-year-old Sam loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sam would break them open and drink the coconut juice. Sam liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.
This winter vacation, Sam was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door—one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night, Sam was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed and turned (辗转反侧) in bed. Suddenly, the ground began shaking as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung (附着) to his grandpa. Grandpa cried out, "It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that it would be safer there.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, "The sea is rising! The sea is rising!" The villagers started running away from the beach. Sam was dumbstruck (呆若木鸡).
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sam thought, "How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sam remembered his mother telling him long ago, "You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." So he ran out to be with Grandpa.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

Jennifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition (学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.
Jennifer is now married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.
Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer sacrificed (牺牲) to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study. "Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers," she says. However her children have learned an important lesson by witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family—and that's pretty powerful.

5.答案:be distracted
解析:句意为:当别人看电视时,要让你的孩子离得足够远,以确保他/她不会因为电视而分心。be distracted by...意为"被……分散注意力"。情态动词can后面用动词原形,且he与distract为被动关系。故填be distracted。

四、书面表达
答案:
Dear John,
Learning that you are deeply interested in Chinese culture, I'm writing to recommend the book A Dream of Red Mansions to you, which is a literary masterpiece written by Cao Xueqin.
The book describes a tragedy of love and the decline of a big family which exposes the social crisis. It is written in classical Chinese, which is difficult to understand. So when you read it, you'd better get a classical Chinese dictionary ready for reference. In addition, I suggest that you should know some background knowledge about the Qing Dynasty.
I hope you can find pleasure in reading the book and benefit from it.
Yours,
Li Hua
