When is bedtime If you don’t have a phone or a watch, don’t worry. Every living thing has a built-in clock that 45 the sun.
For a long time, people thought daylight tells animals when to rise or rest. When it’s light, rise. When it’s dark, rest. But in 1729, a French scientist tested this with a mimosa (含羞草) plant. The plant’s leaves folded up at night, but when he put it in a dark cupboard, the leaves still folded and unfolded 46 . He realized that living things have a tiny clock inside them that measures day and night. This clock is called the daily cycle.
Daily cycles tell our bodies when to sleep, eat, and grow. They 47 help animals know when to move or rest for the season. These clocks help living things stay in line with the sun’s light.
Every cell in our body has its own tiny clock, but the brain has a main controller that keeps them working together. Like the mimosa plant, our clock counts time in 48 , but it also reacts to light.
Humans have a special light sensor (传感器) at the back of the eye. These cells help signal when it’s bright or getting dark. The master clock then sends “ 49 ” or “sleep” signals to all your cells. This sensor helps reset our body’s clock. That’s why when you travel to different places, you feel 50 at the wrong times. Your body’s clock gets out of line with the local time, but soon, sunlight and darkness help reset it. So, don’t worry about missing your watch—your inner clock runs on sun time.

Choose the best answer and complete the passage. (选择最恰当的选项完成短文)
Saying “no” gives us a feeling of freedom
Tina, 14, is a hard-working student. She studies hard, follows the rules at school, and does whatever her parents, teachers and even friends tell her to do. She seems to be 45 saying “yes” to everything, but Tina is not always happy about this. She hopes she could say “no”.
Saying “no” to others can be hard for some people. We grow up with the idea that we need to keep a positive image (正面形象) of ourselves and many of us haven’t been trained to think of ourselves first while we are growing up. However, as writer Bi Shumin wrote in her book Appointment Happiness, saying “no”, like survival, is a basic 46 .
So if you have the same problem as Tina does, the first thing you need to do is to allow yourself to say “no”. But you don’t want to be rude when you 47 someone. Saying “no” while being polite can make you, as well as the other person, feel better. So how does one do this
●Start by saying thanks.
For example, in Tina’s case, she could start with “Thank you so much for inviting me to your party”, or “I’m glad you feel 48 asking me to do you a favor”. But after that, remember to give a clear “no”, so people won’t ask you again.
● Say “I don’t” rather than “I can’t”.
When you say you can’t do something, it means something outside is 49 you. But when you say you don’t do something, it means you choose not to do it, no matter what. It helps you say “no” more easily in the future.
● Share 50 instead of your time.
Try writer Alexandra Franzen’s tip. Franzen said that to say “no” nicely, you should offer another way to help. This should be something you can easily do, like something that takes less time. For example, you could suggest someone else who can help or suggest books you’ve read that might be of great use.

Amy Cuddy is a social scientist who studies body language, especially how we show power with our bodies. According to her, there are two kinds of poses, high-power poses and low-power poses. For example, putting your hand on your face or neck is a low-power pose. It makes you look 45 and shows a need for protection. Standing tall with hands on your hips like a boss is a high-power pose. It can make you appear stronger and more confident.
Cuddy thinks that changing our body language can make us feel more powerful. To 46 her idea, she did an experiment. First, she invited some candidates (候选人) to attend a job interview. Next, just before the interview, Cuddy asked half the candidates to do high-power poses and the other half to do low-power poses for two minutes each. Then they went to the interview room one by one to communicate with the interviewers. All the interviews were 47 and later watched by another group of interviewers who had no idea about the experiment. Most of them preferred the candidates who did high-power poses before the interview.
Cuddy gives a simple 48 for this. She says that doing some poses releases particular chemicals in the brain. For low-power poses, these chemicals make people believe they are powerless. 49 , they often do not deal with stress well, and they are less positive. Oppositely, Cuddy found that high-power poses release other chemicals in the brain. These tell people that they are powerful, so they then feel confident. 50 , Cuddy found that it didn’t matter what the candidates said or what qualifications (资格) they had. What mattered was how confident they seemed.
So, doing a high-power pose for just two minutes can make us feel more powerful. And feeling powerful can change our lives.

A UK book company recently changed some words in Roald Dahl’s famous children’s books.
The company said they wanted the stories to be “enjoyed by everyone” by removing words that might hurt people’s feelings. But many people disagreed, saying this censorship (changing or hiding content) 45 creativity.
Roald Dahl was a popular British writer who wrote funny and magical stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda. His books are full of silly 46 and wild ideas. For example, in The Twits, a man eats spaghetti mixed with worms! Dahl often made children the heroes, while adults in his stories were sometimes stupid or unkind. His writing style is loud, funny, and exaggerated, which has made kids 47 for over 50 years.
However, some people think certain words in Dahl’s books are not 48 today. The publisher Puffin then asked a team to edit the books. Words like “fat” or “ugly” were removed. Descriptions like “tiny” became “small”, and “mothers” or “fathers” were changed to “parents” or “family”.
These changes made many readers and writers angry. They argue that rewriting books takes away the author’s original style. They think the changes are unnecessary.
Roald Dahl, who died in 1990, always refused to change his books. He once said, “Children 49 complain about my stories.” Considering people’s dissatisfaction, Puffin says they will also sell the original versions of the books, called The Roald Dahl Classic Collection. Now, readers can choose between the edited and original texts.
This debate shows how 50 changes over time. Old books might include words we find unfair or rude today. But many believe stories should stay as the author wrote them, even if they have old-fashioned ideas. After all, books are like time capsules-they help us understand the past.

This report is about our recent Year 9 trip to New Zealand in March 2025. The aim is to see how successful the trip was and to decide if we should 45 it to future Year 9 students who are interested in travel and learning about other cultures.
Host Families
We all agreed that the host families were friendly and welcome. They made us feel at home and did their best to make our stay comfortable. Many students said their families were kind and generous. 46 , some families lived far from the school, so we had to wake up before sunrise to get there on time. I think next time, it would be better if host families lived closer to the school.
School Life Experience
We spent a few days attending classes at the local school. The lessons were different from ours, with more group discussions and 47 learning. One afternoon, we had a science lesson in a nearby park, where we studied plants and insects. We also joined a geography class that took place at the beach, where we learned about the land and water. It was fun to see how students in New Zealand study, and we enjoyed working on small projects with them.
Cultural Activities
The teachers in New Zealand planned many fun activities for us. They found tour guides who were 48 and easy to understand. We visited many exciting places like Auckland, Rotorua, and the Hobbiton movie set. These trips were amazing. 49 , the local students could not join us because they had school. I think next time, they should come with us so we can spend more time together.
50
Most of us spoke English with our host families and exchange partners, which helped us feel more confident. Some of us also spoke with the tour guides and learned about Maori culture and traditions. I think keeping a short travel diary would help us remember the trip and what we learned.
Overall, both Shanghai and New Zealand students enjoyed the trip. We learned a lot about life in New Zealand and had fun together. I would happily recommend this trip to other students who want to find out about new places and meet new people.

The year starts with “Start of Spring” and ends with “Major Cold”. Each season has six solar terms, and each term lasts for 15 days.
From generation to generation, the experience in growing food and daily life has been passed. Many farmers 48 rely on the solar terms now to decide what they should do in the fields.

The surprising secret of polar bear fur
Although polar bears live in the Arctic, where temperatures hit -40°F, they stay warm thanks to their blubber (fat) and thick fur. The fat and thick fur keep 45 in and cold out. But scientists have found that polar bear fur provides more than insulation (隔热). It also contains oil that prevents ice from building up at all. 46 the researchers thought the structure of polar bear fur was what kept ice from sticking to it, but when they examined the fur under a microscope (显微镜), they realized that wasn’t the 47 . They noticed something else, however: The fur was very oily. The team didn’t believe that could be what prevented the fur from freezing. To 48 whether their conclusion was right or wrong, they froze blocks of ice onto washed and unwashed polar bear fur, human hair, and ski equipment, which is coated with chemicals that reduce friction. Then they determined how much force was needed to remove the ice from each of these materials. Ice was 49 removed from the unwashed, greasy polar bear fur and the ski equipment. However, it was very hard to remove from the human hair and about four times harder to remove from the washed fur. After knowing for sure why the ice wasn’t sticking, the team carefully examined the oil itself. They found that it was full of chemicals that repel (排斥) ice. The study’s authors hope the findings will 50 the creation of materials that don’t get icy. At present, some of the chemicals used to keep skis ice-free are harmful to the environment.

As 2025 starts, so does a new generation. A generation is a group of people who were born during a 61 period of time, typically 15 to 18 years. People born on or 62 January 1, 2025, through the year 2039 will be called Generation Beta.
The grouping before Generation Beta is called Generation Alpha (2010-2024). Before that was Gen Z (1997-2012), Millennials (1981-1996), Gen X (1965-1980), Baby Boomers (1946-1964), and the Silent Generation (1928-1945).
Grouping people into generations is useful for researchers who use 63 when studying trends (趋势) in people’s attitudes and behaviors. Although the specific characteristics of this new generation are not yet known, experts have made some 64 . For example, they think the use of artificial intelligence and other technology will make Gen Beta different from previous generations and help them solve problems in society. Challenges like climate change may also inspire Gen Beta to focus even more on sustainability (持续性) than previous generations have.
Jason Dorsey, a researcher and author, wrote a book about generations. He said that labels (标签) are useful when talking about a group of people who have 65 the same events or experiences in their lifetimes. Generational grouping can be really helpful for getting a head start and creating a (an) 66 understanding. But it’s also important to remember that even within a generation, we’re all still individuals.

Food is a necessity for survival. But do you know how much work goes into producing it The poem, The Peasants (II) (悯农二), written by Tang Dynasty poet Li Shen (772—846), shows readers the plight (苦难) of the peasants (农民).
The Peasants (II)
(Tang Li Shen)
45 they hoe up weeds;
Their sweat drips on the soil.
Who knows the rice that feeds;
Is the fruit of hard toil!
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
The first two sentences 46 a common scene for peasants. At that time, the sun hangs high in the sky and peasants have to farm their lands. At such a high temperature, their sweat drips constantly (持续不断地). In the other two lines the poet directly tells the reader that the rice we eat is the fruit of farmers’ hard work.
This poem is simple in language, but it is profound (深刻的) in the theme. Farmers face difficult 47 to provide food, and this food should be cherished. The lesson is useful even now. 48 the Food and Agriculture Organization, about 1.3 billion tons of food, or one-third of the total produced for human consumption, is wasted around the world every year. To work out the problem, China adopted (采用) a law on 49 food waste. It makes efforts to safeguard food security and promote the traditional virtue of thrift (节俭的美德).

I used to think debates were boring, but a high school debate on TV really caught my attention last night. The topic of the debate was whether we should test beauty products on animals.
The team who was for testing on animals argued that it was 45 for our own safety. They claimed that without animal testing, it would be difficult to know if a new cosmetic (化妆品) might cause serious harm to our skin or health. For example, some products might contain chemicals that could damage our skin, and animal tests could help 46 possible harm.
However, the team who was against animal testing gave some strong 47 for passing a law to protect animals. They argued that animal testing was cruel and caused a lot of pain to the animals. They also pointed out that modern 48 allowed us to test products without using animals. For example, computer models and human—cell—based (基于人类细胞的) tests could examine the safety and effectiveness of the products.
In conclusion, while the team in favor of animal testing talked about safety, the team against it highlighted cruelty and the use of different methods. In my opinion, we should 49 testing beauty products on animals. We should make more efforts to develop and improve other testing methods. 50 , animals also have the right to live without being harmed, and we can find better ways to ensure the safety of beauty products.

Plastic is used in daily items, from toothbrushes to furniture and toys. However, only about 9% of plastic is recycled. When plastic waste is 61 , it gives off waste gases. If it is thrown away, it often ends up in the ocean and can take hundreds of years to break down.
What’s more, the transportation of plastic is sometimes 62 . In 2021, a ship carrying 1,680 tons of plastic sank near Sri Lanka. The leaked (泄露的) plastic polluted the beaches. Now, some countries are thinking about new rules to control how plastic is made and moved.
Recently, scientists in Japan have invented a new type of plastic that fully decomposes (降解) on its own. Compared with traditional plastics, this new material can 63 break down in nature. Scientists have done several experiments and the results show it can disappear within a few hours in seawater and about 10 days in soil.
The new plastic has other 64 as well. It can be used in many ways. When heated to 120°C, the new plastic can be shaped into different forms. It can be made into hard surfaces, soft rubber products, or strong materials for carrying heavy weight. It’s also non-toxic (无毒的) and does not catch fire, which makes it 65 for use in daily life and industry.
“This great discovery can encourage us to keep developing more new materials.” said Takuzo Aida, one researcher. “The new family of plastics we’ve created is strong and seldom changes. 66 , it can lead to a cleaner and safer environment. This shows science helps solve real-life problems.” He believes it could even be used for 3D printing or medical machines in the near future.

Throughout my childhood, my mother had a special routine in the evenings. Sometimes she would knit hats for us, and other times, she baked cookies. But one day, she 45 us all by announcing (宣布) , “I’m going to call one neighbor every night.” I was 16 then and couldn’t understand why she would spend her evenings talking to people she hardly knew.
One evening, I overheard her conversation with an elderly lady. She asked about the lady’s dinner and even discussed the roses in the park. 46 she hung up, I questioned her choice of topics, finding them trivial (琐碎的) . It wasn’t until nearly 30 years later that I realized the true 48 of my mother’s nightly calls.
The elderly often feel lonely for different reasons. As people age, they may experience the loss of friends and family members. This leads to a smaller social circle. My mother’s conversations were more than just friendly talks—they were lifelines for lonely seniors. Her calls connected them to the world outside. Her social skills in keeping these connections were more than I could understand, and I wish I could do better.
