During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape. When I traveled across to the other side of the island (岛屿), I could see the other islands, and I said to myself, ‘‘Perhaps I can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day.”
So I decided to make myself a boat, I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole (洞) in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe (独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How silly I was! Why didn’t I think before I began work Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn’t move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn’t move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.
That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I did not try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, not my prison, and I was just happy to be alive. A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island. I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.
My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make, I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.
I kept food and tools (工具) at both my houses, and also wild goats (山羊). There were many goats on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats’ milk to drink every day. I also worked hard in my corn (玉米) fields. And so many years went by.

Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet. As temperatures increase, the ice caps and glaciers (冰川) around the world are starting to melt (融化), meaning sea levels will get higher. We are already seeing the results of climate change with an increase in extreme weather events such as hurricanes (飓风) and wildfires and serious shortages of water. All over the world there are people living in difficult conditions. But difficult conditions often inspire creative solutions. Every year the Philippines are hit by typhoons. These violent storms often kill hundreds of people and cause damage to the islands. One company has come up with a house that stands up to the strongest of winds. The houses built in a dome (穹顶) shape and the curved surfaces are much better at surviving in storms than traditional flat roofs and walls. They are also better at surviving earthquakes.
Wildfires often cause destruction in many places around the world. In 2015, bush fires burned down plants in South Australia. This made the land difficult to farm as strong winds blew the soil away. A farmer called Brian Fischer had a brilliant idea. He ploughed (耕) the fields in spirals (螺旋形). This means that it doesn’t matter which way the wind blows because it can never blow away the soil.
A lack of water is also a serious problem. In the Himalayan Desert, water is difficult to find in spring. The Ice Stupa project has come up with a clever solution. In winter, a pipe (管道) takes water from higher up in the mountains down to the desert, where it rushes out as a fountain (喷泉). Because it is so cold in the desert, the water freeze sand makes frozen towers of ice. In spring, the ice melts giving the farmers the water they need for their land.

A.what solution people came up with B.what the topic of the passage is
C.how people change the climate D.how much energy has been put into

① typhoon ② heavy rain ③ hurricanes ④ wildfires ⑤ thunder
A.①③④ B.①③⑤ C.②③④ D.②④⑤
24.What is NOT needed to deal with the lack of water
A.The ice melt in spring to provide the water.
B.The frozen ice towers can store water.
C.A pipe takes water from higher up in the mountain.
D.A fountain is built to carry the falling water.

Humans love to give things names. We name our children, our pets and sometimes even our cars. But according to scientists, we may not be the only ones. Research has suggested that elephants, just like us, use names to call each other.
Elephants communicate using sounds. Besides their famous trumpeting noise, they also use a kind of low sounds that humans can’t hear. The researchers collected a lot of elephant sounds in Africa. They used machine learning to study the noises they heard and identified 469 special elephant “calls”.
The leader of the research said that elephants have specific calls for each other. They respond when a call is addressed to them and pay little attention to the call for others. The researchers also found that elephants don’t always use names when communicating with each other. They do it more often when they are far apart and when adults are talking to young elephants. Adults are found to use names more often than the young. It suggests that name-calling may be a skill that has to be learned over time.
The researchers tested the findings by playing elephant calls to a small group of the animals. In the test, the elephants responded actively when they heard recordings of their family members calling their names. This provides evidence to show that elephants can recognize their names.
The study opens a door into how elephants’ mind works. If we can know how they communicate, we may be able to communicate with them more directly and live with them better.

I have a very special relationship with books. Growing up, we didn’t have a TV, so the whole family would get together in my brother’s room every night. While my mom knitted (编织), my father, the biggest reader I know, would read aloud to us for hours. We loved J. K. Rowlin’s Harry Potter and stories set in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Before I entered the first grade, we had already finished The Lord of the Rings.
Although I loved the stories in the books, learning how to read them was a very big challenge—I had dyslexia (阅读障碍). This meant my brain had trouble putting the letters in the correct order, making reading and writing very difficult. I finally learned to read at the start of fourth grade with the help of a tutor (家庭教师).
Instead of making me run away from books, my dyslexia made me want to read even more. My parents often took me to a bookstore near our home. I bought a book about Helen Keller there and read it many times. Helen Keller’s story of dealing with blindness and deafness taught me to keep trying when facing difficulties. Peggy Parish’s Amelia Bedelia books, with their interesting stories, made me realize that making mistakes is part of learning. These books helped me build confidence and a lasting love for reading.
Reading became a beautiful part of my life. For my parents, reading was like breathing. Our home was filled with books, and my mom and dad always discussed what they were reading. Being able to join these conversations made me feel like I was truly a part of the family.

19.What can we learn about the author’s family from the last paragraph
A.They live in a beautiful house. B.They are supporting each other.
C.They enjoy telling funny jokes. D.They are connected by books.

There used to be a lot of passenger pigeons (旅鸽) in the world. They flew over much of the United States in huge flocks (群) that darkened the sky. The number of passenger pigeons reached its highest point in the 18th century, when there were more passenger pigeons than any other kinds of birds.
At one point, people thought that there were so many passenger pigeons that they would never run out. But they were wrong. Some people would attract the birds with food and then use a tool to catch hundreds of them at a time. The birds were then sold in restaurants in large cities. This action caused their numbers to fall quickly.
In the late 1800s, people cut down many trees where passenger pigeons lived. This compelled the birds to move to colder places with more storms. The new living environment made it hard for them to survive, and soon they were gone.
In 1897, the United States made a law to protect passenger pigeons, but it was too late. By then, no big flocks of passenger pigeons had been seen in the US for 10 years. After that, to save passenger pigeon, a few of them were kept safe and protected by humans, but they finally all died. The last one, named Martha, died in a zoo in America in 1914. With her death, it means that there are no more passenger pigeons left in the world.
It’s important to take care of nature and protect animals, even if there are many of them. The sad story of the passenger pigeon tells us that we can’t think every kind of animal will always exist. We need to be careful and do our best to take care of the environment and all the living things that call it home.

When I was young, “Don’t get fat” was a repeated warning during my childhood, I was often told what not to eat. It messed up my relationship with food. Because of this, I was always worried about my daughter’s weight and what she ate. I used to encourage her to make healthy snack choices and often stop her from a second dessert. However, hearing her say, “I think I’m too fat,” was a wake-up call. It made me wonder if giving her advice on snacks was having a bad influence somehow.
So I turn to Charlotte Markey for help. Markey, a psychology (心理学) professor. Markey recommends a well-known idea called the “Division of Responsibility”. The idea suggests that parents provide a lot of healthy foods to their kids at fixed times, and the kids themselves decide what and how much they want to have —even if that means eating more cookies than carrots from time to time, even if that means they can share what they eat with their classmates.
Markey believes that food is one of the unusual subjects where, as parents, saying less is more. “When your child complains of a stomachache, you can say, ‘Well, you had a lot of sugary foods and you might feel better if you made some other choices,’” says Markey. “Let them feel like they have the power to decide it themselves.”
Trying out these ways has shown me that less restraint develops better decision-making in children. “Parenting is a long game,” Markey notes. “The food you have makes a huge difference.”

Ms Liu was born in 1973. When she was a child, a neighbor used sign language to communicate with her but Liu could not understand what she was trying to say. With the help of the neighbor’s husband, Liu knew that she wanted to make her a scarf. Liu was moved by her kind gesture, and thought it would be great if she could speak.
The experience left indelible marks on Liu. At the age of 14, she decided to learn to teach hearing-impaired (耳背的) students. After graduating from university, she became a teacher at a school of special education.
She remembers clearly that there were 14 students in her class, from 6 to 12 years old. Some of the students had a runny nose; some even wet their trousers. She was at a loss and thought about giving up, but her neighbor’s face flashed through her mind.
Although she was only 18 at the time, she treated the students as her children. With great care and patience, she taught the students how to wash their face and clothes, and clip their nails. To help her students speak, she put her lips (嘴唇) against their hand to let them feel the movement of the lips and the flow of the air, while allowing the students to put their hand around her neck and on her nose so they could feel the vibration (振动) of the throat.

21.What can we learn about passenger pigeons in the 18th century

Considered as one of China’s top 10 hiking places for 2024, recently the trail has quickly become a symbol of Shenzhen’s natural beauty.

Since August, driverless taxis can run on roads in cities including Wuhan, Chongqing, Shenzhen and Beijing as well as six more cities is putting driverless taxis to test. China is taking the lead in developing and turning self-driving technology (科技) into reality, said China Daily.
________
Self-driving cars give us many benefits (好处). They use computers to sense (感知) the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer traffic jams and better parking of cars. For disabled (残疾的) or blind people, self-driving cars can also help them get around more easily. By using computers, they can avoid unskilled, careless or drunk driving and so on. This can cut down 90 percent of road accidents, said the website TechDim.
Is self-driving cars totally safe on roads
Self-driving cars can’t react (反应) as fast as a human driver could if something unexpected (意料之外的) happens. Also, during bad weather like heavy snow, it is difficult for self-driving cars to see clearly. The car’s computer could also get hacked (非法入侵), making it crash (碰撞) or change its way. To make self-driving cars safe enough to run on more public roads, technology companies are working on these problems.

In movies, you might see cars that can drive by themselves, you tell them where you want to go, and they take you there as fast as possible. With 5G, cars like this may soon come into our real life because 5G can connect many different smart devices (智能装置) to one network (网络).
Finland’s “robot buses” are a good example. Telecom company Nokia builds 5G transmitters (信号发射器) along a 1 kilometer road. These transmitters are able to control the buses, making them driverless, according to Raconteur Media.
There are also 5G roads. These roads will have many 5G transmitters. They can give you smart services, such as telling you where the nearest oil station is. People can also use them to control traffic on the roads. “People will use a road network in real time, controlling traffic light, traffic numbers through computer programs,” said a scientist.
In south Korea, a subway station builds a smart system. This system has a 3D map, sensors (传感器) and an advanced (先进的) camera system that make the station more useful and safer, according to Arirang News.
And of course, there are driverless cars. These cars can send signals (信号) to each other. They also “talk” to traffic lights and road sensors. 5G will let these car drive more safely because they can communicate (交流) with each other, as well as with traffic lights and road sensors.

In January, 2025, five students from Hangzhou No. 14 High School were in for a nice surprise. Their proposal (提案) was taken to the Zhejiang provincial two sessions (两会) by a school leader, Chen Limin who is a member of Zhejiang Provincial Committe of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (浙江省政协委员会,简称CPPCC).
The suggestion was about making home care services beter for the elderly in Zhejiang. The idea came from 18-year-old Ma Zhenhan and his team. They are all part of the school’s model CPPCC club. “At first, we noticed that old people around us needed help but didn’t know how to get it,” Ma said.

Have you ever read Dune (《沙丘》) or watched the films People living on the planet of desert wear specially designed suits. These suits collect sweat (汗) and urine (尿) and transform them into clean drinking water. This may sound like magic, but some places in the world are already recycling wastewater in similar ways. These places are in scarcity of water.
I recently visited Jenfelder Au, a new neighborhood in Hamburg, Germany. There was an experimental wastewater reuse project. People here are looking for smarter ways to use water. Traditionally, water flows into a city from outside, and wastewater is sent back to treatment plants far away. This new system separates wastewater into three streams (水流) to be reused locally.
Rainwater is collected to water the gardens. “Gray water” from kitchen and bathroom sinks is used to flush toilets. And “black water” from toilets is sent to a local treatment plant to be turned into biogas (沼气). The system reduces water use by 30 percent and produces electricity for hundreds of homes.
Perhaps all new neighborhoods around the world could follow Jenfelder Au’s example. The big challenge lies with old houses. It’s hard and expensive to replace their pipes and systems. But it happened with lighting. Most homes and cities have updated to LED.We update our homes and cities every 10 to 15 years. We can make use of this cycle and encourage people to try new water technologies. Over time, more and more people will start using water wisely. More and more water will be saved.

Today, more than 40 million seeds from nearly 1,000 different kinds of plants have been collected from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. We have made this achievement because of Zhong Yang, a professor of biology at Fudan University and Tibet University, who saw the value of studying plants.
Zhong spent a lot of time building a collection of seeds for China’s national seed bank. A seed bank saves plant seeds, and the seeds may have medical or agricultural value in the future. More than 80 percent of the seeds that Zhong collected were from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However, it is difficult for people to collect seeds from the plateau. One has to deal with different kinds of difficult environments. In fact, a third of the seeds collected on the plateau were found at a height of at least 4,000 metres above sea level.
Some seeds are easy to collect, while others are more difficult. One seed that was hard to collect was from a special species of peach. In order to get 5,000 seeds, Zhong and his students started eating the peaches, lots of the peaches. “Since there is no right machine that can be used for collecting the pits (核), we have to eat the peaches, which taste awful. But this is the safest way to get the seeds,” Zhong said.
Every year, Zhong and his students walked at least 10,000 kilometres to collect seeds. To save time, Zhong and his students ate only one meal a day while travelling to the mountains. Sometimes, they even fell ill. Though they faced all these difficulties, they kept going on. Zhong spent countless hours collecting seeds in Xizang. Besides, he believed that it was important to improve education in Xizang. “After staying for some years in Xizang, I have realized that ________,” Zhong once said.

Bassanio was a young man who had fallen in love with Portia, a rich girl. However, Portia’s father, before his death, set a challenge for any suitor (求婚者) wishing to marry her. He left three boxes—one made of gold, one of silver, and one of lead. Each box had an inscription (题词), and only the one who chose the correct box would be able to marry Portia.
Bassanio looked at the three boxes, but he did not read the inscription on them. He looked at the gold and silver.
“The world is tricked by appearances,” he said. “People often disguise (伪装) ordinary things with beautiful gold, silver, and jewels to make them seem extraordinary. People always agree with those who speak well, even if they say foolish things. Many people who seem brave are really cowards (懦夫). How often do we believe in leaders who turn out to be bad ” Then Bassanio remembered the story of Midas, the man who loved gold too much. He wanted everything to be gold. He wished that he could make everything gold just by touching it. When he could, it was a disaster.
“No, I do not want these beautiful boxes of gold and silver. I will choose the lead box with its ordinary colour. Please give me the key to the lead box. Let happiness be mine,” Bassanio said.
One of the servants gave him the key. Then he went to the box and opened it. Portia was very pleased. She could not believe it until Bassanio opened the box and saw the picture of Portia inside it. When he saw the picture, he loved her even more because the picture was very beautiful.
He wondered how anyone could paint such a good picture of her. He looked at all the parts of the picture. All of them were perfect. Of course, Portia herself was far more beautiful than her picture. The writing inside the box told him that he had chosen the right box. It said tha
