Silk The invention of silk happened thousands of years ago. Silk was widely used in a variety of sectors(行业) including clothing, writing and fishing. Later, during the Han Dynasty, silk became more than just a product. It was used as a reward for a worthy Chinese citizen or government official.
Seed drill(播种机) Chinese farmers generally planted seeds by hand, which was time-consuming and inefficient. Most of the seeds never developed because of pests (害虫) and bad weather. The ancient Chinese found a way to solve this problem. In the second century BC, they invented a multi-tube iron seed drill that helped them to produce food more easily.
Deep drilling(钻孔) technology The Chinese developed drilling technology to get brine(盐水) from under the earth’s surface. As the deep drilling technology slowly improved, the Chinese were able to drill holes over 3,000 feet deep by the 11th century. The same technology was used to drill the first petroleum well(油井) in California in the1860s.
Compass The Chinese considered south their cardinal direction, and the original compass was created by the Chinese using a lodestone(天然磁石). The ancient Chinese discovered that a lodestone could turn freely and would point towards the north and south poles. In the 11th century, the Chinese found that the lodestone, which was first used as a divination(占卜) tool, could also be used to show directions for travelers.

A map is a picture of an area. Maps show us where things are, and they also show us how to go somewhere. 31 There are maps of buildings and parks. There are also maps of the whole world.
32 Maps have scales(比例尺). The scales show how the distance(距离) on a map is shown according to the real distance. Some maps have scales written as a ratio(比例). An inch on a map might be the same as a certain number of feet or miles on land.
Maps include symbols for real things. The symbols depend on what the maps are showing.
For example, a large map of a state or country might have symbols for cities, highways and rivers. A small map of a town may have symbols for hospitals, schools and libraries. 33
34 At one time, people used only paper maps. They would have to carry the map around if they were using it to find places. Nowadays, instead of a paper map, people use DBS receivers. A map shows up on a screen. The map will point at the right direction by showing you which road you should take as you move along.

Ladybugs(瓢虫) are loved by people so much. In many cultures they’re considered good luck. There are about 5, 000 different types of ladybugs in the world. They come in many different colors and patterns, but the most familiar in the UK is the seven-spot ladybug, which has a shiny, red-and-black body. Most ladybugs have oval, dome-shaped bodies with six short legs. Depending on the types, they can have spots, stripes(条纹) or no markings at all. Seven-spot ladybugs are red or sometimes orange with three spots on each side and one in the middle. Their head is black with white patches(斑点) on either side. (A)The ladybug’s bright colors can warn animals they’d better not eat them. When they are in danger, the ladybugs produce an oily, yellow fluid from joints in their legs—and their coloring acts as a reminder to any predators who have eaten their kind before that they taste disgusting(令人厌恶的)!
These bugs have another trick to avoid danger, too—remain still and pretend to be dead. Simple, eh Birds are ladybugs’ main predators, but (B)they also fall victims(牺牲品) to frogs, spiders and dragonflies.
Seven-spot ladybugs are native to Europe but were introduced to North America in the mid-1900s to control aphid populations. These ladybugs are happy in many different habitats(栖息地), including grasslands, forests, cities, suburbs and along rivers. During spring and summer, when they are most active, these ladybugs can be seen fluttering around or walking on the leaves of plants. But when the weather turns colder in autumn, they look for a warm, secluded place to hibernate, such as under rocks or even inside houses. They like to group together, too.
