You might see loneliness as someone(usually an old person) sits alone, staring into the distance or out of a window. Such images are deceptive. Researchers have actually found that those who report experiencing loneliness the most are young people, and such images of solitude (孤独) don’t match the experience of loneliness during youth. Those years are typically spent surrounded by other people, at school or at work.
Loneliness during youth can be defined as a negative feeling about a difference between the relationships we have and those we want. This means we might feel lonely in the company of others if we don’t feel they understand us or share common interests with us. Although loneliness is often a difficult experience, it can help us to reconnect and rethink our relationships so that we can build(or seek out) the ones that; mean the most to us.
There are certain features of youth that tend to give rise to loneliness. In youth, our friendships are increasingly important in providing us with emotional support. Research shows that young people have higher expectations of their friendships than adults do; they show a preference for larger friend groups, more companionship and higher frequency of contact with friends. When we consider that loneliness serves the function of keeping us safe within our social world, it makes sense that the feeling like “we do not ‘fit-in’ ” as so many young people feel, gives rise to loneliness. Another reason is our developing sense of self discovering who we are. That often means changes to values or beliefs. It can be challenging when your friends are going through the same process, but might not follow the same path as you. Young people often report feeling lonely at school, while home is a comfortable space. But when there are difficulties at home—such as arguments or tension with family members and the departure of supportive family members—these can make the feeling of loneliness worse.
If you find yourself feeling lonely and it seems like nothing is helping, do not give up hope. It is likely that you have not yet found the strategy that works for you. Here are some practical steps you can try, starting with what you can do on your own and moving on to ways to connect with others.

In the UK, Bonfire Night is the anniversary of a plan to kill the king in 1605. At that time, King James I treated Catholic people badly because they had a different religion from him. Life was very unfair and dangerous for Catholic people. A group of men were so unhappy about this that they decided to try to kill the king when he was inside the Parliament building on 5 November 1605.
The men put lots of gunpowder under the Parliament building. One man, called Guy Fawkes, stayed with the gunpowder, ready to make it explode when the king arrived. But the king found out about the plan, and Guy Fawkes was caught. Later, he was executed.
After Guy Fawkes was caught, everybody was allowed to have a big fire (a bonfire), to celebrate that the plan didn’t happen and the king didn’t die. And so, 5 November became Bonfire Night, and it’s celebrated every year.
Lots of towns organise a big bonfire and a fireworks display. They build a very big fire, usually in a big, open park, and they make a model of a man that looks like Guy Fawkes. This model is called a “guy”. Then they put the guy on top of the fire. Lots of people go out in the evening to watch the fire and the fireworks. They can look amazing!
There is also a special poem about Bonfire Night, which many children learn and say:
Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
In the UK, it’s usually very cold in the evenings in November, so people like to eat hot food while they watch the bonfire and fireworks. Things like baked potatoes, sausages and burgers are very popular, as well as toffee apples—an apple on a stick, covered in sweet, sticky toffee.

On school days, students pass their school work through different hands, from their group leader to the class representative(课代表), and finally to the teacher. It might not sound too difficult, but sometimes it can go wrong. And usually it takes a lot of time.
To deal with these problems, Zhang Xirui from Shenzhen Gezhi Academy in Guangdong came up with a useful tool—a smart homework collection robot. This won him first prize in the 20th Guangdong Provincial Children's Invention Awards.
The robot uses RFID(射频识别) technology—a reader and a special tag(标签)that can share information without touching each other. This way, it can help find and know what it is looking for. Each student's notebook has a special RFID tag with their name and the subject. Students only need to place their notebooks on the robot, and the machine “sees” the notebook, reads its tag and takes it out of the name list. “Teachers can check who hasn't handed in homework by connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi,” the 13-year-old explained to Shenzhen Satellite TV.
The robot is the second-generation model made by Zhang. Now,he's planning to develop a third-generation and hopes to use ultra-high-frequency(超高频)radio technology to read lots of RFID tags from far away. That means if you stick a special tag on your notebook, the robot can read the information from plenty of notebooks at once. Zhang believes this is the key to how artificial intelligence(人工智能)can make life easier for us.
Zhang is mad about science and invention. He dreams of becoming a scientist when he grows up. “I have tried making model airplanes and other scientific and creative projects. Inventing has brought me joy and happiness,” he said. “I want to invent more things in the future, so that they can serve our life and study.”
