示例:原文通过“Lily hesitated to keep the puppy”到“took it home”的转折,暗示情感变化。
语言与动作描写:需通过对话、表情或动作(如“stared at the broken vase, his face pale”)推

Peking Opera used to sound strange to Dou Yi. The 14-year-old Beijinger said whenever
she found Peking Opera on TV, she watched another program. Like most of today’s teenagers, she
preferred pop music and changed TV channels when operas played, thinking they were for older
people.
This changed when her school introduced Peking Opera classes. Every week, a teacher
taught students famous operas and the four main roles: sheng (male), dan (female), jing
(colorful-faced male), and chou (comic roles). They learned basic movements like waving sleeves
and special steps.
“At first, the singing was too high and rhythms were tricky. We laughed trying to copy it,”
Dou said. But with practice, the music became meaningful. They discovered operas tell stories—
some about heroes, others about poems.
Since 2008, many Chinese schools have taught Peking Opera to share traditions. Dou’s
school organizes performances where students act out scenes. “I didn’t know operas included
history,” she said. “One even has a Tang Dynasty poem! It’s like fun history lessons.”
Now, Dou and her classmates enjoy Peking Opera. They discuss it during breaks and sing
parts together. “I used to think traditions were old-fashioned, but they’re part of us,” she
explained. “If we keep learning, this art won’t fade. It’s our treasure!”
Through school, Dou found beauty in Peking Opera. She hopes more teens will try it.
“Understanding our culture makes us proud of who we are, ” she smiled.

Every time I see that spacecraft-shaped kite hanging on my wall, my grandpa’s voice rises
in my ears and can still touch my heart after so long.
When I was a child, I often went to my great-grandmother’s house in the countryside. Her
neighbor was a craftsman (手艺人) who was good at making kites, and I called him “Grandpa
Sun”. I loved watching him make kites, and he always showed me his works with pleasure. All of
the kites he made were vivid, some like birds flapping (摆动) their wings against the wind, others
like fish wagging (摇摆) their heads and tails in the air. Seeing my admired look seemed to bring
him the greatest satisfaction.
Once, I asked him, “Grandpa, can you teach me how to make kites ” His eyes lit up at
once, shining with the brightness that I had never seen before. He looked at me and said, “There
are fewer and fewer people making kites by hand because everything can be produced with
machines! So, little boy, since you are going back to the city in a few days, let’s just enjoy flying a
kite.”
The kite we made together flew in the blue sky for a while before falling to the ground as
the wind slowly died down.
Just as I was about to leave, he gifted me a spacecraft-shaped kite. “Take this, and don’t

When 14-year-old Lin Xia from Shanghai first arrived in London for a student exchange
program, she was both excited and nervous. Her host family, the Thompsons, welcomed her
warmly, but cultural misunderstandings soon appeared.
On her first morning, Mrs. Thompson served baked beans and toast for breakfast. Xia
politely ate a few bites, though the salty beans couldn’t satisfy her taste buds. Later, she whispered
to her roommate Emma, “Do British people eat beans every morning ” Emma burst out laughing.
“No! Mum thought you might miss Chinese breakfasts. She read online that beans are popular in
Shanghai!” Xia realized Mrs. Thompson had mixed up Shanghai’s sweet red bean desserts with
British baked beans.
Another challenge turned up during a school project. Xia’s team needed to design a poster
about climate solutions. While her British teammates freely debated (辩论) ideas, Xia hesitated

Xia shared her idea of using algae (藻类) to take in carbon dioxide — a concept she’d learned
from her scientist father. The team loved it and won the first prize.

My first name was Philip, but when I was a small child, I could only say Pip. So Pip
became my name. I lived in a small village with my sister, who married Joe, the village
blacksmith (铁匠). My parents had died years ago, so I often went to visit the churchyard to look
at their names on their gravestones (墓碑).
One cold afternoon, I sat on a gravestone in that churchyard, listening to the sound of the
sea.
“Don’t say a word!” cried a voice, as a man jumped up and caught me. “If you shout, I’ll
kill you!” He was a big man, with an iron chain (铁链) on his leg. He looked tired, and hungry. I
had never been so scared in my whole life.
“Oh! Don’t kill me, sir!”
“Tell me your name, boy!” he said, still holding me. “And show me where you live!”
“My name’s Pip, sir. And I live in the village over there.”
He picked me up and turned me upside down. A piece of old bread fell out of my pocket.
He ate it like a dog.
“So where are your parents ” he asked.
“There, sir,” I answered, pointing to their graves.
“What!” he cried, and wanted to run, when he saw where I was pointing. “Oh!” he said.
“They’re dead. Well, who do you live with ”
“With my sister, sir, wife of the blacksmith.”
“Blacksmith, you say ” And he looked down at his leg. Then he held me and looked down
into my eyes.
“Now look here. You bring me a file and some food to me tomorrow morning. If you don’t,
or if you tell anyone about me, I’ll cut your heart out.”
“I promise I’ll do it, sir,” my body was shaking.
“You see,” he continued, “I travel with a friend, who likes eating boys’ hearts. Wherever
you are, we’ll find you.”
As soon as he turned, I ran home as fast as I could.

One day, a train was approaching the small town of Cheekyville. On the train was a strange
guy with a big suitcase. He was called William Warbler and he looked very common indeed. What
made him weird, though, was the fact that whenever he needed to communicate he did it by
singing opera. It didn’t matter to William whether it was simply a matter of answering a brief
greeting, like “good day”. He would clear his voice and respond,
“Gooood dayyy to youuuuuuuu… toooooo!”
It wouldn’t be unfair to say that almost everyone considered William Warbler a massive
pain in the neck. No one could get a normal, spoken word out of him. They made fun of his
singing, calling him “Don No One”, “Poor-Rotti”, and “Lazy Miserables”.
William had been in Cheekyville for some years, when, one day, news spread round town
like wildfire: William had got a role in a very important opera in the nation’s capital, and there
were posters everywhere advertising the event. Everyone in the capital went to see it, and it was a
great success. At the end of its run—to everyone in Cheekyville’s surprise —when William was
being interviewed by reporters, he answered their questions by speaking rather than singing. And
he did it with great courtesy (礼仪), and with a clear and pleasant voice.
From that day, William gave up singing at all hours. Now he did it only during his stage
appearances and world tours. Some people wondered why he had changed, but others still had no
idea, and continued believing him to be mad. They wouldn’t have thought so if they had seen what
William kept in his big suitcase. It was a large stone, with a hand-carved message on it.
The message said: “Practise, my boy. Practise every second, for you never know when your
chance will come.”
Little did people realize that he only got the role in the opera because the director had heard
William singing while out buying a newspaper.

3.How did the people feel when they found William could speak very well
A.Surprised. B.Angry. C.Excited. D.Pleased.
4.What can we infer from the story
A.William was used to singing in his daily life because he was unable to speak clearly.
B.William meant to pretend that he could only sing instead of speaking.
C.William sang in his daily life so that he could practise as much as possible.
D.William was chosen to play a role in the opera because he was famous.
5.What is the best title of the story

All of

once, shining with the brightness that I had never seen before. He looked at me and said, “There
are fewer and fewer people making kites by hand because everything can be produced with
machines! So, little boy, since you are going back to the city in a few days, let’s just enjoy flying a

Xia

from her scientist father.

“I promise I’ll do it, sir,” my body was shaking.

sociologist, cross-cultural(跨文化)communicator, and winner of the Chinese Government’s
Friendship Award.
The 73-year-old man is perhaps best known among the Chinese public for writing
American country music-style songs about China. Levine often sings and plays the guitar. He has
staged hundreds of performances in 15 provinces, including on TV and on the Great Wall.
His performances were attended by over 40,000 people. His songs are about such themes as
China’s trains, ethnic legends and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Several focus on such disasters as
the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, floods and COVID-19. If people can listen to these songs, they
will better understand China and be more willing to visit.
His latest song, The Future Is Very Bright AheadLed by the CPC, celebrates the 100th
anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. It talks about the history and the
progress in China that has been made under the leadership of the CPC.
China helped Mark, and Mark also helped China. He tells stories with his songs and sings
them with his heart. He hopes he can sing China’s stories to the world. And he hopes that China’s
goal of building a community of shared future for man kind will become a common goal for the
world.
