Here are some of the best courses (比赛场地) for a golf holiday in France:
Chateau d’ Augerville
The design of this course is unusual, tricky and rewarding. The variety of this course is what makes it so
enjoyable — each hole presents its own unique challenge including a couple of blind shots that require a brave
and steady hand. Diligent golfers will be rewarded on the 9th and 18th holes with a walk up to the beautiful
17th-Century chateau (also a luxury hotel), where you can take lunch and watch other golfers as they try to tackle
some of the more challenging holes.
Chantilly Vineuil
Chantilly Vineuil was designed by the legendary Tom Simpson at the beginning of the 20th Century. This
course has hosted the French Open numerous times, with Nick Faldo winning it here in 1989. It’s a challenging
第 3页/共 17页
course — you’ll need to combine accuracy with power to avoid ending up in the woodland or numerous bunkers.
Located 1 mile north of Chantilly, the Chantilly Vineuil is one of the best options for golf near Paris.
Golf National Albatros
Now the home of the French Open, Golf National Albatros has been voted by the EuropeanTour Pro’s as the
second best course on the entire European tour. It is known as one of the toughest golf courses in France. With its
tricky fairways causing professionals more than a few headaches, it’s a true Championship course.
Fontainebleau
Another classic Tom Simpson design, the Fontainebleau is arguably the most enjoyable of the three he
designed in France. The golf course is set among the largest forest in the country. It is often remarked that the
landscape and layout have a remarkably English feel so this course can provide a taste of home for those on a golf
break in France.

A. The special meal. B. The diversity of the course.
C. The unusual design. D. The fantastic hotel.
2. Which golf course is suitable for professionals

My wife, Betty, had just come home, proud of her find at the local second-hand shop. Six small glasses. “Six
dollars for the whole set. We could use them for orange juice. ” she said.
I picked up one. Nice design. Cut glass, solidly made. I held it up to the light ... and noticed something on the
bottom. I turned the glass upside down. There were the words: the Cunard Company, Limited. A Cunard glass!
Immediately I put the glass down for fear that I’d drop it. My first feeling was that we needed to lock up the set.
“Betty, these are Cunard glasses! They probably honored the table of the dining room on a long-ago first-class
ocean ship. They’re real collector’s items.” Betty knew of my fascination for old ocean ships, and Cunard was the
top one.
第 4页/共 17页
I called an appraiser (评估师). “I’d say each glass is worth at least $50,” he said. “In a few years even more.”
“We can’t use these for breakfast,” I told Betty. “They’re too valuable.”
“Nonsense,” she said, “I bought them to use and that’s what we’ll do.”
“Don’t you realize what we’ve got ” I raised my voice in anger.
In a moment we were having a full-blown argument. I said she didn’t understand a thing about collecting and
she said when you buy something you should use it.
We didn’t want to say much that night. Finally, Betty broke the silence. “Remember your war bonnet (战帽) ”
I’d told the story to our boys many times. When I was 10, I’d won on Indian war bonnet in a contest. I was so
in love with it that instead of wearing it. I hid it so my brother couldn’t find it. In fact, I hid it so well that I forgot
where it was. I never really enjoyed it because I was so afraid it might get dirty or someone else might use it.
I looked up at the glasses, “We’ll use them at breakfast.” Betty and I both smiled.

7. What happened at last
A. The writer’s wife gave in to him. B. The writer’s wife set him straight.
C. The writer no longer stuck to his hobbies. D. The writer found his war bonnet years later.

Researchers have worked out a new, electricity-free design for walls that can cool the building more
efficiently than conventional walls. These zigzags (之字形) , just a few centimeters wide, can reduce daily average
wall temperatures by a couple degrees Celsius.
第 5页/共 17页
Buildings currently consume about 40 percent of global energy and account for over a third of global carbon
dioxide emissions (排放), a large part of which comes from air conditioning. So researchers have hunted for ways
to reduce that energy load with designs that can redirect more and more of the sun’s energy.
Most “radiative cooling” designs involve roofs designed to take in and then emit the sun’s energy at infrared
(红外线的) wavelengths that radiate through Earth’s atmosphere and into space. Such roofs can be decorated wish
plants, painted white to better reflect sunlight, or coated in materials that are both highly reflective and highly
emissive.
Walls are more difficult to cool, says materials scientist Yuan Yang of Columbia University. That’s because
they don’t just face out toward space, but meanwhile absorb heat from the ground. An efficient radiative cooling
design must account for both effects.
Hence: zigzag walls. Yang’s team assumed that by zigzagging the straight surface and coating the surface with
different materials — more reflective materials facing downward and more emissive materials facing upward—
the wall could absorb less heat than a conventional straight wall.
Experiments comparing how much heat conventional and zigzag walls gained from the ground during a hot
day supported that assumption. The average difference in wall temperature was about 2. 3 degrees, a difference that
rose to 3.1 degrees during the hottest part of the day.
“The goal is to design something that will be commercially appealing”, Yang says. Zigzag walls already exist,
he notes, and the design is easy to produce and expand, perhaps finding a way for consumers to deal with the
climate.
8. Why does the author mention the present situation of buildings
A. To present some severe energy issues. B. To show the necessity of new designs.
C. To introduce a brand new scientific assumption. D. To highlight the pressing environment problems.
9. What does paragraph 3 focus on
A. Newly-developed house structures. B. Energy-efficient building materials.
C. Impact of sunlight on house roofs. D. Example of common cooling designs.
10. What did Yang’s team base their assumption on
A. Analysis on why walls are hard to cool.
B. Research into the effects of global warming.
C. Calculation of how hot walls are during hot weather.
D. Comparison between traditional walls and zigzag wall.

11. What does Yang think of the design
A. Amusing. B. Demanding. C. Promising. D. Astonishing.

In countries like Pakistan, it is a moral value that the elders make decisions for the young, no matter how big
or personal the matter is, like their careers or even their weddings.
I am not saying that these decisions totally go wrong or something. They are quite experienced people and
have seen highs and lows of life and some of the decisions are really judicious ploys and it is helpful when the kids
can’t decide or they feel confused. But people don’t really face the same experiences in their lives. It worsens when
the elders almost force their children to follow what they feel is right for them.
Robert, brother of my friend was forced to be a doctor when he really wanted to do hotel management and the
guy is fed up with his life as he is sensitive and can’t stand burnt or injured people. This could easily have been
avoided if his parents respected their son’s wish and helped him on his way. How can somebody do something well
when not interested in it He would make matters worse for him and also for the people around him.
One of the reasons for this is that parents want to secure the future for their kids, as every parent rightfully
would feel that only a few notable professions are respected or give enough outcome to lead a successful life. One
more thing here is that many parents are most enthusiastic about things which are the flavour of the month and
supported by the government, really ignoring permanent factors.
Another thing is inherited (继承的) professions like a barber’s son would have to be a barber and a
businessman’s son must look after his family business.
I have a suggestion that the parents should let their children decide what is good or bad for themselves and if
the parents have some reservations about it, then they must discuss it with their kids and take them in confidence
over it.
12. What do the underlined words “judicious ploys” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Heavy loads. B. Brilliant ideas.
C. Rare situations. D. Useful opportunities.
13. What can be learnt about Robert
A. He feels life tiresome. B. He often makes mistakes.
C. He has adapted to his profession. D. He has got on well with his parents.
14. What are many parents most interested in
A. Social positions. B. Substantial income.
第 7页/共 17页
C. Temporary benefits. D. Children’s preference.
15. What is the text mainly talking about
A. The moral values in Pakistan. B. The concerns from parents over their kids.
C. The approaches of making proper decisions. D. The practice of parents deciding kids’ future.

Much had changed since I’d noticed the first signs of hair loss. “You have alopecia (斑秃) ,” the doctor said.
“But alopecia is not a health concern. Just ignore it.”
I tried to style my hair to cover the worst of the hairless patches (小片) . But gradually, my hair was thinning.
I hadn’t wanted to worry my mother, but I needed her support. She had lost her hair while she was undergoing
cancer treatment. She would understand what I was going through.
I went to her house. “I need to show you something, ” I said. I pushed my hair aside so she could see clearly.
“It’s alopecia.”
“You’ll be okay, Tabitha,” she said. “You can deal with this. ”
She led me upstairs, where she kept a collection of beautiful scarves and head wraps. Mom showed me
different ways to tie them. “Remember, with or without hair, you’re always the most beautiful in my eyes, ” she
said.
I was amazed at my mother’s faith and strength. Even dealing with cancer, she’d been a rock. I wished my
faith were as unshakable.
But as the hairless patches grew, so did my doubts.
That summer, I almost became hairless. The first day of school after the summer vacation, I sat in my car. I
retied my scarf, making sure it was secure. I hurried into my classroom before being noticed by more people. Mary,
a girl who was always wearing the sporty headband too, sat in her chair, smiled warmly. I gave her a slight smile
back and turned to the day’s lesson. After the last bell, I rushed home to hide myself.
One day, my mother visited me. She showed me many pictures of her patient friends. Despite being hairless,
they were positive in life. Slowly something inside me shifted.
Another semester rolled in. On the first school day, I thought it was time to stop hiding and reveal my hairless
self to my students and colleagues. I dressed in the plainest coat and pulled on a scarf. In the school parking lot, I
sat in my car for a moment.

The Olympics Fire My Love for Sports
The Olympics Fire My Love for Sports The Olympic champion I adore most is Sun Yingsha. It is her brilliant
skills in table tennis and charming personality that fire my passion for this sport.
Whenever I am available, equipped with my beloved racket, I head for the table tennis court. I think over each
skill carefully and then practice it repeatedly until I can do it perfectly, which gives me a sense of achievement.
Another thing I appreciate most about table tennis is its social part. I’ve developed friendship with many
like-minded people. I feel more than happy to have fun while exercising.

Then I pulled off my scarf, took my bag and walked to the building. I reached up and touched my hairless
head. I could hardly believe it. I was out in public with my head uncovered! My students filled into the classroom.
They were taken aback when they saw me. I pointed to my hairless head. “You see I have no hair. ” I said. “I’m not
sick, but I have alopecia. I’m strong and healthy.” My students nodded. It was no big deal to them. I thought at that
moment. I overcame my inner fear.
Between class periods, Mary approached me and seemingly wanted to say something. She said, “You’ve
probably noticed I always wear a headband.” She reached up to pull it off. There were hairless patches. “I’ve been
afraid to tell anyone I have alopecia.” she said, “But seeing you today, hearing how upfront you’re being, I was
filled with the courage to share my secret.” Never could I have imagined my alopecia being a source of inspiration
to others. And not until then did I deeply understand how important it was to show great courage in the face of
difficulty.
