SongKran — Thailand

Dates: Every Saturday from April to May
Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part in the people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving ceremony” . Tia Wimbush and Susan Elis have been co-workers for a decade, and while they didn't know each other well, they had something in common, both dealing with the same medical stress at home. Their husbands each needed a kidney transplant( 肾脏移植). They were willing to donate one of theirs, but previous tests showed theirs weren't apposite to their respective husbands.
When they knew each other's condition and met in the washroom, the women paused for a moment and had a short conversation. Then they had tests again. Tests showed that each woman was an excellent match for the other's husband. And seven months after that chance conversation, Tia donated one of her kidneys to Susan's husband Lance Ellis, and Susan donated one of hers to Tia's husband Rodney Wimbush.
“It is extremely rare for two people to suggest exchanging their own paired organ and actually be a match for each other. I've personally never seen this happen,” Christina Klein, a medical director of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital’s kidney transplant program, says. “When we put patients' information into large databases for national paired kidney exchange programs, some patients wait months or even years for a match.”
The couples met a few days before the surgeries when they came to the hospital for the final round of testing. Before that, they had chatted on social media a bit. The surgeries lasted about three to four hours each and were beyond their expectations, with no one developing complications. “ It's really just a story about simple kindness,” Susan says , “For us, it started with two people just being good humans. Now we'd like to tell people they can do the same. ”
Rodney says he will be forever grateful to his wife and Susan. “Susan and Lance are going to come with us to North Carolina for our son's first college football game,” his wife adds, “ We've skipped the friendship. We're family now.”
24. What does the underlined word "apposite” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Sensitive. B. Relevant. C. Suited. D. Comparable.

A. It is touching. B. It is inspiring. C. It is worrying. D. It is surprising.
26. What is the change in the two families after the transplant operations
A. They bond with each other closely. B. They become interested in football.
C. They interact more regularly online. D. They are motivated to do good deeds.
27. Which can be the best title of the text
A. A Different Family B. An Unimaginable Match
C. A Funny Coincidence D. An Unforgettable Kindness C
Imagine a future where we can feast on meat, but no animals have been killed in the process. Only 16% of the UK population enjoy a meat-free diet, according to statistics website . It seems there is a call for lab-grown meat as a substitute to traditional meat. But, despite years of expectation, this futuristic food is still not on our plates. Why
One of the biggest reasons is cost. The first ever lab-grown hamburger was introduced in 2013 by Dutch scientist Mark Post. It was created from beef cells and cost more than $300,000. Lab-grown meat production goes from thousands to hundreds of thousands of US dollars per ounce-that’s the weight of about two chicken nuggets(鸡块). This expense is partly due to the cost of raw materials that ‘feed’ the cells-a combination of sugar, proteins and other nutrients is added to the cells.
In 2023, US-based company Upside Foods received authority from the US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration to start selling lab-grown meat. In order to do this, the company has had to take on significant economic losses so that they can price it fairly compared to traditional meat. An investor in Upside Food, Lisa Feria, told Forbes magazine “Profitability is very much years off because the biggest challenge ahead of them is: can we make it at millions of tons a year and finally slightly compete with traditional meat ”
There are also environmental costs. A 2023 study by the University of California found that the process of producing lab-grown meat could have a four to 25 times higher impact on global warming than beef, which is generally the highest-polluting meat. This is mostly because of the emissions needed to create ‘feed’ .
So, it seems unlikely that we’ll be eating lab-grown meat just yet, and we possibly never will. After all, no company would take a risk of bankrupt to create a product that is of higher cost than profit as well as not environment-friendly.
28. What can be known from the first paragraph
A. Most of the British eat a diet without meat.
B. Most of the British eat a diet with meat .
C. Lab-grown meat has been served in the UK.
D. Lab-grown meat will serve as a replacement for traditional meat.
29. Why does the author mention the first ever lab-grown hamburger in paragraph 2
A. To make a contrast. B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To place an emphasis. D. To give an example.
30. What is Lisa’s attitude towards the future of lab-grown meat
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Uncertain.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Lab-grown meat and the reasons for its unpopularity.
B. The choice of traditional meat or lab-grown meat.
C. The problems of the diets in the UK.
D. A rising trend of choosing lab-grown meat.
D
Elephants, the largest land mammals on the planet, are magnificent creatures and tourists rush to African countries to see them. Due to very successful conservation efforts, the African elephant population in countries like Kenya is growing. In the country’s popular Tsavo National Park, elephant numbers went from around 6,000 to almost 15,000 in 2021.
While this is great news for conservationists, it’s not seen that way by farmers who live in between two parts of the park. The human population has also grown and this means that it affects elephants’ feeding and migration areas, which has led to conflicts( 冲 突 ) between humans and elephants, sometimes resulting in elephant deaths.
Now a new solution using honeybees has been found to keep the elephants away from farms. This seemingly unlikely solution is part of a long-running project from the Save the Elephants organization. The sound of African honeybees prevents elephants. Now yellow-painted beehive fences(蜂 巢 围 栏 ) protect some of the local areas. The project is supporting 40 farmers whose crops are protected by 15 hives. Each of the hives is strung on a wire a few meters off the ground. This protects them from insects and allows them to shake if they are disturbed by an elephant, which starts the bees making sounds. This frightens the elephant away.
A nine-year study tracked 26 farms that were protected by the beehive fences in two villages near the park. During the high growing seasons—November to January from 2014 to 2020— 3,027 elephants approached the fences and most were prevented. During the drought of 2017, which reduced the number of bees in the hives by 75%, elephants were still prevented 76% of the time.
Save the Elephants is now promoting beehive fences in 15 countries in Africa and Asia. But besides preventing elephants, the beehive fences can provide other benefits to communities. Bees provide pollination services which can increase crop production and honey from the hives that farmers can sell to increase their income.
While this solution isn’t perfect, and is subject to the negative effects of climate change and drought, it does show that elephants and humans can share the land without conflicts.
32. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs
A. The elephants are the most attractive creatures to tourists in Kenya.
B. The protection efforts of elephants in Kenya are in vain.
C. The elephant population growth in Kenya mixes happiness with sadness.
D. The increasing migration areas in Kenya have caused many elephants’ deaths.
33. What does the word“this” in bold in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The bees making sounds. B. The insects making sounds.
C. The beehives shaking. D. The painted-yellow fence .
34. Why does the author mention the nine-year study in paragraph 4
A. To stress the importance of protecting elephants.
B. To show the popularity of beehive fences.
C. To prove the effectiveness of the new solution.
D. To show the effect of climate change on the number of bees.
35. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Growth of African Elephant Population
B. The Importance of Saving African Elephants
C. Effect of Climate Change on Elephant Habitat
D. Pioneering Solution to Elephant-Human Conflict

I stood at the kitchen window watching Papa as he sat in the old, wooden lawn chair staring out at the lake. Ralph, his old black dog, lay on the ground at his side. Papa’s hand absently stroked(抚摩) the head of his old companion as they dreamed the dreams of old men and old dogs in the evening sun.
“He does this day after day ” I asked Mama. She nodded, sadness filling her eyes.“I don’t know what to do for him. There is a strong desire in his eyes that I can’t satisfy-a desire for the past. The past can’t be brought back to the present. Once days are gone, they are gone forever,” Mama sighed(叹息). “I’m going down to talk to him,” I said.
I called out to Papa and handed him a cup of coffee:“What are you and Ralph thinking about all these hours you spend out here ” I asked. “We’re not thinking,” he said softly.“We’re wishing.” I sat on the grass beside his chair.“Wishing for what ” “For the impossible, I suppose,” he sighed. “You always told me that nothing was impossible if you wanted it badly enough and were willing to work hard for it,” I reminded him. He laughed softly, but there was no joy in the sound,“But Ralph and I have come to learn that when you reach our age, some things are actually impossible.” “Maybe I can help you. What do you want so badly ” I asked. Papa grinned from ear to ear, and his eyes shone brightly at the thought of his dream becoming a reality.“Ralph and I want to fix up the old boat and go out on the lake again. We used to spend all day out on the lake, fishing, drinking beer and eating sandwiches,” Papa said.
Yes, I remember. When I was young, Papa and Ralph often enjoyed themselves on the lake on weekends. They’d start for home when the sun went down, totally satisfied with themselves and with life. Now, Papa was almost eighty-five years old and had a heart condition, so Mama was terrified by the idea of him going out on the lake again at first. But eventually I managed to convince her.
Para1.After Mama agreed, I persuaded my friends to join in my secret plan.
_______
_______ Para2.On the day of Papa’s birthday, we were all eager to give him a surprise.

I still remember my family celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival last year. During the day, we prepared all the dishes for a great feast and bought several types of mooncakes. As darkness fell, all my family enjoyed the delicious mooncakes, various fruits and other tasty food while admiring the shining moon. Over dinner, we talked about what was going on with us recently.
It was a really joyful festival experience. The festival experience made me realize the importance of
family and inspired me to spend more time with my family. 读后续写参考范文:
After Mama agreed, I persuaded my friends to join in my secret plan. That was to restore Papa’s beloved boat and take him out on the lake as a birthday surprise. The boat was in poor condition, with the engine breaking down and the paint gone here and there. Yet, these didn’t discourage us. Surely, it was not easy, but Papa’s words always echoed in my ears: nothing was impossible if you wanted it badly enough and were willing to work hard for it. All this finished, we equipped it with life jackets and a first-aid kit and, of course, Papa’s favorite beer and his fishing kit. Gazing at a brand new boat, which glittered in the sunshine, I just couldn’t help imagining how happy Papa would be to see it.
On the day of Papa’s birthday, we were all eager to give him a surprise. After breakfast, I suggested a family walk by the lake. When we approached the lake, waiting there were my friends, shouting “Happy birthday” to Papa. Para laughed heartily. Suddenly, something-his old boat in a new coat, rooted him to the ground. Papa’s jaw dropped and his eyes widened in disbelief. Tears welled up in his eyes. Even, Ralph wagged his tail and barked joyfully. He gave each of us a tight hug, choking out “This is the best birthday gift I could ever ask for.” The sun shone warmly as we spent the entire day fishing, laughing, drinking beer and catching up. Hearing the laughter floating from the boat, I knew this birthday surprise
was really what Papa had wished for and would be a memory treasured in our hearts forever. 听力材料

We saw the ad in the summer, in about July, I think, but we weren't really serious about moving then so we didn't even go and see it. It wasn't until November when they readvertised it that we got in touch with the agency and had a look. They'd put the price down since the summer too, I suppose because it had been empty so long, so that made it more affordable for us which helped us make up our minds. It was perfect - a bigger garden for the kids and enough space for an office. In winter it was lovely, very warm, in fact, which is important to me as I really feel the cold, whereas my husband will open a window when it's minus temperatures outside! Anyway, in July when summer really started and we had that heatwave, we understood why no one had wanted to rent it over summer. It was boiling! All those lovely big windows that made the flat so light and open were like a greenhouse as soon as it got warmer. From about 8 in the morning until 7 in the evening, it was like living in a sauna! We couldn't stand being at home, and weekends were especially bad. No air conditioning, of course. If only we'd gone to see it when it was first advertised in July, we'd never have moved in!
