Everyone has “down days”. Maybe it’s because of the bad weather, or the poor grade on a difficult test, and some days teenagers just act uninterested in life or school. But these symptoms (症状) often pass quickly, as teens move on to new school subjects, or meet friends, preventing themselves from thinking what troubles them at the moment. But if a teenager displays symptoms of sadness for more than two weeks, it might point to something serious.
As teenagers develop, they push new boundaries (边界), complain about rules and look for more free rights from their parents. According to the online Health Guide on Adolescent Development, parents must be lasting figures in their teenagers’ life, providing safe boundaries for teens to grow, even if the teenagers act like these boundaries are unwanted.
Parents need to provide rules, while also remaining flexible (灵活的) and respectful of the growing teens’ need for freedom. For example, teenagers will often feel frustrated, embarrassed, and even angry that though they want freedom, they still need to ask their parents for agreement to go to a friend’s house, or need their mothers to take them to school.
The US Department of Education says that parents should respect (尊重) and support their teens’ choices as long as those choices won’t have long-term harmful effects. For example, even if a parent doesn’t prefer the music his or her teen listens to, it’s unlikely that the choice of music will prevent that teen from entering a good college, or lead to health problems. However, if that teen is drinking alcohol and driving, parents must get through strict punishments to teach him/her that there are bad results of poor choices that come with increased freedom.
24. Why do teens’ feelings of bad days usually disappear quickly
A. Their teachers help them. B. They take some medicine.
C. Their parents talk with them. D. They shift their attention.
25. What does the example in Paragraph 3 show
A. Freedom must be given at any time. B. Teens are mad about being controlled.
C. Teens need both freedom and proper rules. D. Rules must be absolutely strict for teens.
26. What should parents do about their teens’ choices
A. Support their helpful hobbies. B. Tell them which college to attend.
C. Cancel their extra-curricular activities. D. Get them away from singing pop songs.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. How to Be with Growing Teens. B. Causes of Teens’ Sadness.
C. Teens’ Worries About Strict Rules. D. The Importance of Making Friends with Teens.

People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago has found that elephants carry a substantial number of genes that stop tumors developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improve the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.
“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution (进化) of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and rats. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto’s paradox”. Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not use. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in rats, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancer spreading or even developing in the first place.
“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, the University of Utah. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”
28. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer
A. They have a rather large body size.
B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
D. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.
29. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals
A. Deadly tumors. B. The huge body mass.
C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage.
30. What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to
A. Larger animals have protection from TP53.
B. The risk of cancer is not related to body sizes.
C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.
D. The huger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have.
31. What can be concluded from the passage
A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.
B. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.
C. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53.
D. The extra copies of elephants’ genes are used to cure cancer patients.

Born in Wuzhen in Zhejiang, Qian Lihuai has a unique bond with bamboo and whether it’s in the form of indoor bamboo bonsai or backyard bamboo groves, the material is an essential element in his home.
Qian grew up in the village known for its bamboo weaving and after studying industrial design at the Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, he began to develop an interest in the technique, learning how to do it himself.
He also traveled widely in Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces to learn local bamboo weaving techniques. “The variations are quite large in amount across the regions, and bamboo weaving comes in a wide arrange of forms. It’s sometimes used to make agricultural tools, sometimes to make daily necessities, and sometimes for artistic purposes.” Qian said. “In Wuzhen, each place focuses on producing a specific item. For instance, our village’s distinguishing feature is in making bamboo trays especially for raising silkworms.”
During a visit to a traditional basket maker in Shengzhou, Zhejiang, Qian saw that instead of using nails to fasten the basket together, the craftsman used a slanting (倾斜的) cut on the bamboo to create a precise fit that caused the joint to not be noticed. “I rarely encounter such a level of craftsmanship. He even creates small molds and modifies tools himself to improve the weaving process,” Qian says.
During his visits, he was moved by the dedication of the weavers to their craft. These experiences inspired him to return to his hometown of Wuzhen and throw himself into the bamboo weaving industry in 2013.
Bamboo techniques he has developed or improved are now widely used in everything from home furnishings to clothing, part of a growing trend toward replacing the use of plastic with bamboo, that demonstrates a continuity of the traditional Chinese culture in which bamboo has long been cherished as a topic for arts and a material for daily objects that we use in our home.
32. Why does he has a special bond with bamboo
A. Because of the living environment. B. Because of university majors.
C. Because of his interest. D. Because of his family background.
33. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. There are cultural differences in different regions.
B. Bamboo grows in many places.
C. Bamboo weaving techniques have diversity and uniqueness.
D. Bamboo weaving techniques are used in raising silkworms.
34. What inspired him to devote himself bamboo weaving industry

How to protect your privacy when you travel
It hasn’t been an easy year for the privacy of travelers, at least so far. Data leaks, surveillance (监视) worries and those troublesome cameras in airplane seatbacks and hotel rooms are enough to make passengers anxious.___36___ Fortunately, there are ways to safeguard your privacy on land and in the air. These tips can help you deal with these troubles.
___37___ “It’s not clever to declare on Facebook that you’re travelling to somewhere, reminding a wide range of people that your property is sitting empty,” says Danny McLoughlin. “That puts your security at risk.” Wait until you return to start posting vacation photos.
Some homeowners renting their residences may install security cameras. Travelers should find out if the hosts are required to disclose the presence of surveillance devices. If the rental comes with cameras, ensure they aren’t in a sensitive area by conducting a careful sweep.___38___
Although you can’t control how a hotel or airline handles—or mishandles—your data, you can take reasonable steps to ensure the information it has won’t get you into trouble. ___39___ But some of the worst data leaks happen when you’re staying at a hotel. For example, a hotel clerk sometimes asks for your name and then announces your room number after you’ve checked in. You’re better off handing the employee your ID when he or she asks for your name and asking him/her to write your room number on a piece of paper. Why ___40___ Just to be sure, never leave the customer copy behind. You can destroy it later, but keep it under your control.
A. It’s never been better.

Despite her tight schedule, Emma’s firm commitment meant she never missed a day of work.
One particular day, though, would prove to be unlike any other. Emma’s workday typically began at 3 pm and ended around 10 pm. That day progressed like any other until Emma found herself with just an hour left before her first break.
Then a weary-looking mother arrived at the checkout with her son and a grocery cart. The mother appeared tired, with sleepy eyes and untidy hair. Emma greeted her with a warm smile, “Have you had a long day ” The mother responded with a smile, saying, “Yes, it’s been a tiring one. This little one requested lasagna (千层面) for lunch, and I found we were out of food.”
The woman explained that her five-year-old son, Tristan, was the man of the house, and his younger brother was in hospital, putting an emotional weight on him. Emma couldn’t help but empathize, recalling her own experiences as a child with a sick brother.
Emma asked Tristan for his name, and as he cheerfully replied, “Tristan”, Emma presented him with a lollipop (棒棒糖). She ran it through the register to ring it up before handing it to the delighted young boy.
What Emma hadn’t noticed during her initial scan of the woman’s items was the growing excitement on Tristan’s face as each beep (滴滴声) from the register resounded. Eager and enthusiastic, he asked, “Can I help Can I help ” Emma’s heartwarming response was, “Of course!” She lifted Tristan to her workstation, teaching him how to ring up groceries.

M: The climbing is more challenging. It’s an important ecological environment, so you need to be careful not to damage it.
W: Okay, James, thank you very much for joining us today.

【原文】Good morning, everyone, and welcome to a new school term. We have an exciting time ahead for both staff and students. Next week we will be welcoming our new first year students and I hope that you will all make them feel welcome and help them settle in. Now I want to remind everyone that our school will be having a government safety check this Friday. The officials are due to arrive before morning meeting and will spend the first couple of hours checking the electrical system. Then they will move on to checking the fire alarms and the safety doors, which could mean they will be coming into your classroom. During an earlier visit, an official pointed out a safety issue with the surface of our football field. It has now been closed until changes have been made. However, football can still be played in the schoolyard. Depending on the results of the examination, there may have to be more changes. To discuss this topic, our school will close on Friday afternoon for a special staff meeting. That’s all for today. Thank you.

B. Perhaps they shouldn’t be.
C. Never broadcast your journey on social media.
D. There are other people on the other side of the wall.
E. However, travelers are not powerless against these threats.
F. Some travelers only offer the bare minimum, such as a P.O.box instead of a home address.
G. Report anything doubtful to the host immediately—and if you don’t like what you hear, leave.

Unknown to Emma, Tristan’s mother took a photo of their interaction, capturing her son’s pure joy in a moment frozen in time. Moved to tears, she took more photos of Emma and Tristan at work and expressed her gratitude before leaving.
