afternoon”“the next day”)。
teaches us”)。
细节理解题(40%):直接定位时间、地点、人物行为(如“How did Tom help the old lady ”)。
Cultural Site”。
it rained, they kept running”)。

When I was little, I was really little. But my dream was big. I dreamed of being a basketball
player. I tried out for the teams at school, but I was never given a chance.
As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my 12th birthday, I
decided to try a new sport: running. I told Grandpa. “I’m going to be an athlete.”
“Dave.” Grandpa began gently, “if you can’t be big, you can do something big.”
I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday. On my 13th birthday, I did it again, but I added an extra
mile. On my 14th birthday, I ran 14 miles. 15 on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you guessed it—17
miles on my 17th birthday.

I told Grandpa about my decision.
“But, Dave, you haven’t trained for the marathon. Are you sure you’re ready ” Grandpa
asked. But he still promised to walk over and cheer me on.
I ran fast that day, But I fell at Mile 18 and was driven to the hospital. Later that night, I
called Grandpa and told him I failed.
“No,” he said calmly, “you didn’t fail. You discovered something.”
“I did ” I asked.
“Yes, you discovered that big dreams don’t just come true. They take work. If you train and
work hard, I promise to wait for you next year and cheer you on.”
I trained every day, running miles and miles. Sadly, just two months into my training,
Grandpa died. He wouldn’t be waiting for my second Boston Marathon. I decided I’d run for him.
That day, I ran fast. “Keep going! You can do it!” His words filled my head as I forced my
legs to make each painful step. As I crossed the finish line, I threw my arms in the air and cried,
“Grandpa, we did it!”

①When I was in fourth grade, we would have reading circles. The other kids and I would
sit in a circle and read aloud different parts of books. Then the teacher would ask us questions. I
loved to answer those questions. I was an advanced (先进的) reader and a very fast reader. That
meant that whenever the teacher would start asking us questions, my voice would be the first to
call out the answers.
②This went on for a while, and everybody was pretty patient with me. Little did I realize,
though, that the teacher was getting tired of my behavior (行为). Because I was not able to sit
there and go with the other students, one day she put me in the corner, out of the circle.
③Did this stop me I am afraid not. I was simply excited about what I had read. From the
corner of the room, I kept on listening and reading—reading away. When the teacher would ask
questions, I would still shout out the answers—but from across the room.
④After I’d done this a few times, the teacher became angry. She decided to schedule a
meeting with my parents.
⑤The next day, my mother came to school for the meeting. She reminded the teacher that I
was just trying to be a good student and that I needed to be challenged more. However, it was also
made clear to me that there were other students in the class and they need a chance to talk, too.
⑥In the end, we worked out a solution. I would sit in the circle with the other students, but
I would be given more advanced books to read. After the reading circle was over, the teacher

What would happen if you tried to blow a soap bubble in below-freezing weather Would it
freeze and fill to the ground Would you have to hit it with a stone to break it These questions
came into my mind one cold winter day. It was too cold to play in the snow, but it was a perfect
time for experiment with blowing frozen bubbles.
To blow frozen bubbles, I had to wait until the air outside was very cold. For this activity,
that meant 10 degrees below 0 Fahrenheit or colder. I didn’t have the bubble things that come in a
bottle, so I used dish-washing soap. Adding a drop of glycerin made the soap work even better. I
chose a place out of the wind, and blew bubbles the same way I always do. I watched to see what
would happen. Here’s what I learned.
If the temperature is low enough, the skin of the bubble frosts (结霜) over, becoming
cloudy instead of clear. And what about those rainbow swirls (漩涡状物体) that you see in soap
bubbles The rainbow colors stay even (均 匀 的 ) when the bubbles frost, but they don’t spin
anymore. The bubbles still float in the air. They don’t fall to the ground any faster than they would
on a warm summer day.
When these frozen bubbles break, they don’t turn into tiny drops of soap as summer
bubbles do. They turn into shiny rainbow pieces and fly slowly to the ground. Sometimes a frozen
bubble will roll across the snow without breaking. If it breaks, it may leave a strong bubble skin
on the ground. Leave the bubble alone and it may stay there for a long time.
Sometimes I could catch a bubble and hold it until the heat of my hand made it pop.
I learned one other thing about blowing frozen bubbles. It’s so much fun. I want to try it
again next year!
1.How does the writer begin the passage
A.By comparing two types of bubbles.
B.By describing the freezing cold weather.
C.By asking some questions about the subject.
D.By presenting the tools needed to do the experiment.
2.What is this passage mainly about
A.Making soap that can work even better.
B.Making bubbles that will stay longer.
C.Inventing a new kind of soap that makes clearer bubbles.
D.Finding out what happens to bubbles in freezing temperatures.
3.According to the passage, what will happen if you blow frozen soap bubbles
A.Cold enough, the skin of the bubbles will stay clear.
B.A frozen bubble may roll across the snow without breaking.
C.When the bubbles frost, the rainbow colors will spin faster.
D.When these frozen bubbles break, they turn into tiny drops of soap.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it when
mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I
decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother.
“But the desk,” she said again “is for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But
as a young girl. I wanted to have heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional (易动感情的)”.
But she lived “on the surface (表面)”.
As years passed and I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our
happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose
that she did forgive (宽恕) me.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that
nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had
written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
But the present of her desk told me, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that
writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside—a photo
of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter. “In any way
you choose, mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.”
1.When did the writer begin to love her mother’s desk

2.What does the passage show
A.Mother was too serious about her daughter in words.
B.Mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to her daughter.
C.Mother cared much about her daughter in words.
D.Mother wrote to her daughter in careful words.
3.What does the underlined word “gulf” in the passage mean
A.Deep understanding between the old and the young.
B.Part of the sea going far in land.
C.Free talks between mother and daughter.
D.Different ideas between mother and daughter.
4.What did Mother do with her daughter’s letter asking for forgiveness
A.She read the letter again and again till she died.
B.For years, she often talked about the letter.
C.She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life.
D.She had never received the letter.

afternoon”“the next day”)。
teaches us”)。

As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my 12th birthday, I
decided to try a new sport: running. I told Grandpa. “I’m going to be an athlete.”
“Dave.” Grandpa began gently, “if you can’t be big, you can do something big.”

mile. On my 14th birthday, I ran 14 miles. 15 on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you guessed it—17

work hard, I promise to wait for you next year and cheer you on.”

Grandpa died. He wouldn’t be waiting for my second Boston Marathon. I decided I’d run for him.

After the reading circle was over, the teacher
would spend time talking with me about what I had read.
⑦And so, although I am embarrassed, I learned a lesson from it.

4.What is the best title for the passage
A.Frozen bubbles B.Broken bubbles C.A happy child D.A science club

“In any way
