A
Though oceans cover about 71% of the earth’s surface, there’s still a lot we don’t know
about them. Only about 20% of the seafloor has been mapped, and the remaining 80% is still a
secret to us. Some scientists even think that 91% of sea animals have yet to be discovered.
So why do we know so little about the deep sea Well, getting to those depths is very
difficult and requires high technology that simply didn’t come into being for most of human
history. The first navigable submarine (可驾驶的潜水艇), for example, was built in 1620, and it
couldn’t go more than five meters below the surface. In fact, for a long time, many scientists didn’
t even think that there could be any life at depths greater than 550 meters and didn’t see much
need to explore the deep sea. However, this changed in 1862 when life was discovered as far
down as 945 meters below sea level with the help of a digging machine. Ten years later, around
4,700 species unknown before from the ocean floor were discovered.
Since then, high technology has been developed to help explore the deep sea, including
satellites. But why is deep-sea exploration still so difficult Well, at greater depths it is freezing.
Everything is completely dark, and the pressure is much greater than that on the surface.
Though we have the difficulties, it’s important that we understand the seas. They help
control the earth’s temperature and produce half of the oxygen (O ) in the air. They can also
provide us with information about climate change. Our future depends on learning more about our
oceans, and it is possible for us to really understand what is ongoing below the surface.
1.Why are some numbers listed in paragraph 1
A.To introduce how important oceans are.
B.To discuss why sea animals have yet to be found out.
C.To explain that oceans cover a large area of the earth.
D.To show that we have only a little understanding of oceans.
2.What caused the change of exploration into the deep sea
A.The invention of sea travel for fun. B.Discovery of life in the deep sea.
C.Better temperature under the sea. D.Maps and data about the ocean floor.
3.What can we learn from the passage
A.It is difficult to build a navigable submarine.
B.The seas have a strong influence on our future.
C.The seas have no lives at a depth of 550 meters.
D.It is easier to go into the deep sea than we think.
4.What’s the best title for the passage
A.Hidden Treasures in Deep Sea
B.Unlocked Secrets of Deep Sea
C.Deep-Sea Exploration: Into the Freezing Depths
D.Deep-Sea Exploration: The Advantages and The Disadvantages

Halloween is a traditional festival. People in the West celebrate it on Oct. 31 every year.
Children usually go trick-or-treating—they knock on their neighbors doors and ask for candy.
But because of COVID-19, many cities have advised people not to go trick-or-treating this
year. As health experts said, this illness would spread more easily when people have close contact
(接触) with each other.
But this will not stop Halloween fans from keeping the tradition going. For example,
Elizabeth Lusty from London came up with an idea for her two children. She and her neighbors
will put boxes of candy in their front yards. Then they’ll plan a safe route (路线) so that children
can take the candy without coming into contact with others.
Andrew Beattie from the US also got creative. He and his 6-year-old daughter made a
contact-free candy chute (滑道). It stretches (延伸) from the family’s front door to the outside.
They can send candy down the chute to trick-or-treaters there. The idea became popular online
and many people are doing the same.
“This is something that the kids will enjoy and not think of it as ‘I’m doing this to prevent
illness’,” Beattie told CNN. “They’ re doing to have a good time, and we need that now.”
1.This year, trick-or-treating is not suggested because ________.

B.Elizabeth will put a box of candy in her front yard on Halloween.
C.Andrew made a contact-free chute in his house by himself.
D.Andrew’s idea became popular in the US.
4.What can we learn from the passage
A.COVID-19 might spread quickly on Halloween.
B.People need trick-or-treating these days.
C.Trick-or-treating will not be fun this year.
D.Kids don’t care about COVID-19.
C
Many young people have trouble communicating with their parents. However, there are
some very useful tips to help solve this problem.
First, make a list of the things you and your parents disagree about most. With each of these
things, try to find an answer acceptable to both you and your parents. It is no good for you to
require everything to go your way. You have to be ready to change a little if you want them to
change.
Second, talk to your parents when it is convenient for them. Remember that your parents
may have to work long hours and this can make them tired, so be patient with them.
Third, listen to what your parents have to say. How can you expect them to listen to you if
you are not ready to listen to them In addition, your parents were once young like you, so they
understand your situation better than you expect.
Finally, if you do not get a satisfactory result, try not to get too angry. Talk with your
parents and find out their reasons, Part of growing up is learning to live with these kinds of
disagreements, and learning to understand another person’s way of looking at things.
With a little hard work, you can learn to communicate better with your parents.

Moving with Muscles (肌肉)
How Do Muscles Make You Move
Muscles can do two things—they can contract (收缩) and relax. A muscle gets shorter and
thicker when it contracts. When the muscle relaxes, it gets longer and thinner.
Muscles make us move by working together in pairs. For example, the upper part of your
arm has a biceps muscle (肱二头肌) and a triceps muscle (肱三头肌). This pair of muscles works
together when you bend (弯曲) your arm at the elbow. As your arm bends, two things happen—
the biceps muscle contracts and the triceps muscle relaxes. As you unbend your arm, the triceps
muscle contracts and the biceps muscle relaxes.
How Do You Control Your Muscles
When you want to move in a certain way, your brain sends signals (信号) to the muscles
you need to use. When you want to bend your arm at the elbow, your brain sends out two signals.
One signal goes to the biceps muscle and tells it to contract. Another signal goes to the triceps
muscle and tells it to relax. Both muscles work together to make you bend your arm.
Can You Control All Your Muscles
The muscles that you can control are called voluntary muscles (随意肌). All the muscles
that make your body move are voluntary muscles. You tell your body that you want to ride a bike
or throw a ball. Your brain sends signals to the voluntary muscles that you need to use. You
control your voluntary muscles.
Your body has muscles that you do not control. These are called involuntary muscles. These
muscles work on their own. For example, your heart is an involuntary muscle. It contracts and
relaxes as it beats. It beats on its own. That is why your heart keeps beating when you are asleep.
1.How does the text explain the work of muscle pairs
A.By using the example of biceps and triceps.
B.By listing all voluntary muscles in the body.
C.By describing the history of muscle research.
D.By comparing human muscles to animal muscles.
2.What might happen if the brain can’t send signals when bending the arm
A.The arm would bend normally. B.The arm muscles would contract freely.
C.The arm would not move at all. D.The arm would move faster than usual.
3.What does the underlined word “That” in the last paragraph refer to
A.Muscles can work together in pairs. B.The heart is an involuntary muscle.
C.The brain sends signals to all muscles. D.Voluntary muscles need signals to work.
4.What’s the text mainly about
A.How the brain sends signals to the muscles.
B.How many kinds of muscles there are in the body.
C.How muscles work and how the brain controls them.
D.How the voluntary and involuntary muscles are different.

Zigong, in Sichuan Province is home to Chinese lanterns. Zigong lantern is known as the
best lantern in the world. The Zigong Lantern Festival dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The
festival has rapidly developed with traditional culture and modern technologies. In 2008, the
Zigong Lantern Festival was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化
遗产), becoming a shining name card for Chinese culture to go out into the world.
“Making a huge lantern for exhibition requires 17 steps,” said Wan Songtao, an inheritor
(传承人) of Zigong lantern-making. “Each step is finished by a team instead of a single maker.”
Wan added. The sundial (日晷), a kind of lantern, made by Wan’s team, for example, took about
80 makers over 50 days to complete the whole process. Unlike the lanterns in other places, Zigong
lanterns use modern technologies such as Al, mechanical engineering (机械工程), and holography
(全息摄影术). They are perfect combinations of lights, sounds and movements.
What’s more, the theme of the lantern can be chosen in different ways, “Anything that can
be designed on a lantern can make a wonderful show, and everyone is encouraged to turn their
ideas into real works,” said Zhang Fanglai, a leading researcher at the Colorful Lantern Museum
of China. And the rich themes of Zigong lanterns show the spirit of creativity and warmth from
the bottom of the local people’s heart.
The government encourages local people to learn lantern-making widely. Without doubt, at
the heart of the Zigong Lantern Festival’s success is the local tradition of pulling together. Zigong
lanterns are getting more and more popular. Driven by the collective efforts of the whole city they

Different countries have different ideas about table manners—how you behave when you’re
eating. In England, table manners are important. Good table manners in England are as follows.
How to sit
You should sit up straight in your chair. It is not a good idea to lean (倾斜) forwards or
backwards. When you eat, you should not lean towards the plate but bring the knife, fork or spoon
towards you. At the same time, do not put your elbows on the table, nor reach over someone’s
plate for something.
When to use your fingers
English people normally don’t pick food up with their fingers when they are eating main
courses (主菜). If you are uncertain, the safest is using your knife or fork. However, there are
some kinds of foods that are usually eaten with fingers. These include pizza, sandwiches, burgers,
crisps, and fruit.
Pay attention to your mouth
It is not polite to talk with your mouth full of food, or to eat with your mouth open. And if
possible, do not make any noises. Never lick (舔) your plate after eating.
How much to eat
It is polite to eat the food that you have been offered, so a clear plate is a good plate. It
shows that you enjoy the food. If you can’t finish everything and need to leave a little, that’s also
okay. You could say something like “That was very nice, thank you, but I’m just too full to eat

Bees are small insects, but they play a huge role in our world. In the past years, scientists
have discovered more about how important bees are to the environment. Bees are best known for
making honey (蜂蜜), but their most important job is pollinating (授粉) plants. This helps plants
produce fruits and seeds. Without bees, many of the fruits and vegetables we eat would not grow.
There are over 20,000 kinds of bees in the world. The most common type is the honeybee.
Honeybees live in groups called colonies. Each colony has one queen, thousands of worker
bees, and a few hundred drones. The queen’s job is to lay eggs, while the worker bees collect
food, build the hive and take care of the young bees. Drones are male bees, and their main role is
to mate with the queen.
Bees are also amazing communicators. When a worker bee finds a patch of flowers full of
nectar (花蜜), it returns to the hive and performs a special dance called the “waggle dance”. This
dance tells other bees the direction and distance of the flowers. For example, if the bee waggles
straight up, it means the flowers are in the direction of the sun. This clever form of communication
helps. the colony work together efficiently (高效率地).
Unfortunately, bees are facing many challenges today. Climate change, pesticides (杀虫剂),
and the loss of natural habitats are causing bee populations to decline (减 少 ). This is a big
problem because bees are needed for growing food. To help protect bees, many farmers and
gardeners are now planting more flowers and reducing the use of harmful chemicals. Some people
are even building “bee hotels” to provide safe places for wild bees to live in. By learning more
about bees and taking steps to protect them, we can make sure that we’ll have a healthier planet.

People can find jobs in many ways. Sometimes you can find a job easily by walking into a
local store and looking at its notice board. Local stores often have areas for people to put small
signs telling the services that they need or they can provide. Such services include looking after
children or cleaning houses.
Another popular tool for finding a job is the Internet. For example, people around the world
can use the Craigslist Website to buy things, meet people or find a job. It is said that the site can
receive two million new jobs each month.
Another useful way to find a job is through a university. For example, students at the
University of Texas can go to the job center to get help. Many college students like this way
better.
At times, some experts can also help people find a job. Susan Miller has her own company
called California Job Services in Los Angeles. She says her company helps people find a job by
first helping them understand their strengths, goals and interests. Then she provides them with
methods to help them find the right job. So with her help, many people have succeeded in finding

【基础试题】
A
Though oceans cover about 71% of the earth’s surface, there’s still a lot we don’t know

A.It’s not healthy for children to eat candy
B.neighbors will not give out candy to kids

Zigong

If you can’t finish everything and need to leave a little, that’s also
okay. You could say something like “That was very nice, thank you, but I’m just too full to eat
more.”
