Although it rained, they
kept running”。
Last summer, on my way home...”
标记逻辑词:圈画 but/however/therefore 等词,预判上下文关系。
固定搭配(20%):如“make progress”“take responsibility”。
Festival”。

Lucy’s birthday was coming. She would turn twelve in just four days. Her mom had asked
her what she wanted as a gift this year. Lucy thought for the past few weeks about what she would
like. She thought maybe a new basketball, or maybe a new bike, or an e-reader. She told her mom
her choices and said that she hoped to be surprised.
“Any of those gifts would be great,” she said. Secretly, she hoped for an e-reader. Lucy
loved reading fiction.
Lucy’s mom told her dad Lucy’s choices and they talked about the list of gifts one night
after Lucy went to sleep. Her dad said, “I think Lucy may get tired of the basketball.” Her mom
said, “We just bought her a new bike last New Year. It was only getting a little small for Lucy
although she was growing so fast.”
“I think we should get Lucy an e-reader,” said her dad. “She is so interested in reading
books and she would like that the best. I know some of her friends use e-readers to read books.”
“Sounds good,” said her mom.
Her dad told her mom he would stop by the store the next day after work and pick out an e·
reader for Lucy.
Sunday morning came. Lucy was so excited about her birthday and she ran down the stairs
into the living room. Her gift was usually near her chair at the table. She saw a box and when she
opened it, she shouted, “It’s an e-reader!”
“Happy Birthday!” said her mom and dad.
“This is fantastic! I was hoping that you would give me an e-reader. I probably wouldn’t
use the basketball much, and my bike is okay for now. But I can use the e-reader! Thanks so
much.” said Lucy.
“You’re welcome,” said her mom and dad. That night, Lucy read part of a science fiction on
her e-reader and she loved it.

I arrived in the UK last weekend to learn English. So far I have already made a few friends
and had some traditional English food there. But after having three days of hamburgers,
sandwiches and potatoes, I thought none could be more delicious than Chinese food, especially
my favorite—huo guo. You can’t imagine how excited I was when I got to know that there was
going to be a free meal of hotpot to welcome the new students. On the way to the canteen, I
seemed to smell huo guo in the air. To my surprise, when I stepped into the room, I didn’t see any
sign of huo guo. Where was it
With many questions in my head, I sat down to have the free meal. After talking with an
English girl, I got to know that Chinese huo guo is completely different from hotpot. Chinese huo
guo is written in two words—hot pot; and hotpot, one word, is a traditional English dish.
Hotpot is made from mutton and onion. On the top are pieces of potatoes. People put it in
the oven all day in a heavy pot on a low heat. It takes very little effort to prepare. You can often
see it at parties in the UK, because it’s easy to prepare for a large number of people and is not
expensive.
Hotpot doesn’t taste bad. However, I still miss huo guo——hot pot, two words!
1.The writer felt excited when she learnt she would ________.
A.learn English in the UK B.meet some new friends

Dillon took his school bag, ready to rush out of the door for the bus.
“Want to hang out after school today ” his younger brother, Ricky, asked.
“Um. Yeah. OK.” Dillon was thinking about the busy week ahead of him.
At school, Dillon slid into his seat for math. Max, the leader of the floor hockey, was in the
same class. He was much taller than Dillon and was a little intimidating (吓人的).
“The team is coming over to practice today,” Max said.
Dillon remembered Ricky. “I don’t have my goalie equipment (守门员装备).”
“I have extra,” said Max.
Dillon decided it was the best to stay on Max’s good side.
That afternoon, practice was terrible. It turned out Max didn’t have enough extra
equipment.
When Dillon got home, Ricky was very angry. What was Dillon supposed to do Middle
school was busy. Why couldn’t Ricky understand
“Can you talk with me for a minute ”
“I don’t want to,” Ricky said.
“I’m sorry. We’ll do something tomorrow,” Dillon said.
“No, we won’t. Your plan will change again,” Ricky said.
That stung.
The next day, after school, Dillon set up the hockey net in front of their house. Ricky was
excited when he returned.
“Ha,” Dillon said. “Come and join me!”
Ricky dropped his schoolbag on the lawn and gathered up a few balls. He fired shots on
goal, but Dillon deflected them all. Finally, Ricky faked (佯攻) right and launched a perfect rocket
toward the lower left corner of the net. Dillon leaped a split second too late.
“Score!” Ricky shouted.
“Great shot!” said Dillon.
Just then, a voice said, “Hey, Dillon, mind if I get in on this ”
It was Max. He took the stick right out of Ricky’s hands.
“Actually, I’m hanging out with Ricky. And we have just two sticks,” Dillon said.
Max smiled. “Ricky doesn’t mind. Right ” He twirled (旋转) the stick over his head.
Not cool, Dillon thought. He walked to Max and held out his hand, “Maybe another time,
Max. OK ”
Was Max going to hand over the stick or hit him with it As Dillon held his ground, he felt
something change. Max blinked and suddenly seemed shy. “Fine.” Max gave the stick back to
Dillon and rode off.

He walked to Max and held out his hand, ‘Maybe another time, Max.
OK ’”可知 Dillion 提出了自己拒绝 Max 加入的意见,根据后文“Max gave the stick back to
Dillon and rode off.”
根据“Dillon let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding.”可知 Dillion

Lovell had been away for ten years. He had saved enough money to start a little store
through hard work. Before he would run his business, he went back to see Aunt Sally and Uncle
Tom. After his parents died, they gave him a home. It was their teachings made as much a man of
him as he was.
However, when he got to the house, he found the windows were boarded up (封闭). Being
surprised, he visited the neighbour, Mrs. Stetson and was told Aunt Sally and Uncle Tom lived in
the poorhouse (济贫院).
“Uncle Tom got seriously ill and Aunt Sally was too weak to work.” Mrs. Stetson said
slowly. “They needed money so they sold the house.”
Lovell was silent for a while. Then he asked in a weak voice, “who owns the house now ”
“Peter Townley. All the furniture was sold too, and that almost killed Aunt Sally. She and Uncle
Tom will have been married fifty years and it’s awful to have to celebrate their golden wedding in
the poorhouse.”
Lovell left after the tea and came again the next evening. “I’ve bought the house from Peter
Townley,” he said to Mrs. Stetson, “ ▲ ” For the next two weeks, they visited every house where
Aunt Sally’s furniture could be found. They also asked for help from their neighbours to prepare
the anniversary (纪念日).
Finally, the evening of the anniversary came. Lovell drove Aunt Sally and Uncle Tom to
the old house. Thinking she would spend her anniversary in the poorhouse, Aunt Sally was so
surprised that she gave a cry as she entered her house. Her old furniture was back, and the house
was full of their old friends. Tears of happiness streamed down her face.
They had a celebration in the house. There were speeches, songs and stories. Lovell kept
himself in the background and helped cut the cake all the evening. When the guests had gone, he
went to Aunt Sally and Uncle Tom.
“Here’s a little anniversary present,” he put a red purse into Aunt Sally’s hand. “There’s
enough money to keep you from having to go to the poorhouse again.”
“We can’t take it, Lovell,” protested Aunt Sally.
“Don’t worry,” laughed Lovell. “I’ve got plenty of money now. It is time for me to pay
back.”

Although it rained, they
kept running”。
Last summer, on my way home...”
标记逻辑词:圈画 but/however/therefore 等词,预判上下文关系。
固定搭配(20%):如“make progress”“take responsibility”。
Festival”。

her what she wanted as a gift this year. Lucy thought for the past few weeks about what she would
like. She thought maybe a new basketball, or maybe a new bike, or an e-reader. She told her mom

Her dad told her mom he would stop by the store the next day after work and pick out an e·
reader for Lucy.

opened it, she shouted, “It’s an e-reader!”
“Happy Birthday!” said her mom and dad.
“This is fantastic! I was hoping that you would give me an e-reader. I probably wouldn’t
use the basketball much, and my bike is okay for now. But I can use the e-reader! Thanks so

“Um.

It was Max. He took the stick right out of Ricky’s hands.

Max. OK ”

They also asked for help from their neighbours to prepare

back.”
“Lovell,” said Uncle Tom. “You don’t know what everything you’ve done means to Sally
and me.”
