例句:“People sit uncomfortably on plastic chairs, looking through old magazines, all of which have been read hundreds of times previously.”(外研 Book 3 Unit 1)
例句:“After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head.”(人教 Book 3 Unit 2)
语法解释:“each balancing a pot of water on her head” 是独立主格结构,“each” 是逻辑主语,“balancing a pot of water on her head” 是现在分词短语作状语,对 “一群妇女走过来” 这个主句进行补充描述,说明妇女们的状态。
以否定词(如 Never, Hardly 等)开头时,句子需部分倒装,结构为 “否定词 + 助动词(did /do/had /have/be 动词)+ 主语 + V(谓语)+ 宾语”。
例句:“Never have I seen a greater, or more beautiful, or a calmer or more noble thing than you, brother.”(译林必修 2 Unit 4)
“No sooner had sb done sth than...”
例句:“‘The next station is Bank!’ comes the announcement.”(外研 Book 3 Unit 6)
语法解释:“comes” 是谓语动词,“the announcement” 是主语,正常语序为 “The announcement comes”。
It was not until the singer took his arm and turned him to face the audience that the great man realised his symphony was a success.”
语法解释:该句强调的是时间状语 “not until the singer took his arm and turned him to face the audience”,通过强调句结构,突出了这个时间点对 “伟人意识到交响乐成功” 这一事件的重要性。
例句:“Angry and sad, Liang falls sick and dies. Zhu weeps bitterly over the loss of her love. Overcome with sorrow, she jumps into his grave.”(译林选择性必修 1 Unit 2)
Good night,’ she said, a little awkwardly, but not unkindly.”
常见的状语从句是时间状语从句,常用的连词有 when, as soon as, while, the moment 等。
例句:“He watched her intently while she was speaking.”(北师大 Book 6 Unit 1)
例句:“Mama reached across the table and touched Papa’s arm.”(译林必修 1 Unit 2)
“Had I done..., I wouldn’t have done...”
“Without..., I wouldn’t have done...” 。
“How I wish I could do.../ I were...”
How I wish I could disappear and nothing had happened.”
由 “How + adj. /adv.
例如:“How beautiful the flowers are!”
最高级常与定语从句搭配使用,如 “the best gift that I had had done” 。
例句:“Indeed, the whole family could not be happier to be together. Despite the cold outside, their happy faces fill the air with warmth while merry laughter rings throughout the house.”(译林必修 2 Unit 3)

On the first day of school, I stared in awe at the huge buildings. This high school was definitely bigger than the one I had previously attended.
This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in St. Louis. I had decided the night before that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I even bought a new outfit and had my hair styled just so the first day would be perfect.
Scared, yet anxious to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs to the front door. The halls were packed with kids yelling and laughing and telling stories of their summer adventures. My first class was geometry, but where was that
I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new You look lost. Do you need help My name is Diane. What's yours ” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names. I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite conversation the whole way. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK, and I hope your day goes all right.”
I said thanks and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I decided that this guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right next to him. I said, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m new here.” He said, “Johnny.”

At the end of the class, I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me ” With a frown, he looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom. As they were walking out I heard him say, “Did you guys see that new girl trying to get into our group That outfit was way too strange.” They all laughed and some of them turned around and stared at me. My face hot with shame, I stood stock-still, not believing what had just happened.
Just at that time, someone came up and tapped me on the shoulder. It was Diane. Like a ray of sunshine, the big smile on her face swept away my gloom. I struggled to hold my feelings back and told her what I had encountered. A gleam of concern in her eyes, she said she was sorry and offered to find my next class. At that moment I realized how wrong I was in wanting to only be friends with popular people. Maybe I shouldn't decide whether a person is worth being my friend or not by their reputation, but by who they are.

I'll never forget the day that one of my fifth-grade students,Jace, shyly raised his hand and said that he had never received a gift during reading discussions. Jace's honesty surprised me. What was even more eye-opening was the fact that the boy had gone ten years and never experienced the joy and surprise of receiving a present.
I tried to search a reason that he might be saying this. Then I remembered his story. His mother was out of the picture and he lived alone with his dad. His father had a hard time holding down a job, and come to think of it.I didn't see his father at enrollment(注册)or parent-teacher conferences.
A couple of weeks after Jace's comment,he was absent from school. This happened to be the day I was sending home the annual note about the classroom Christmas gift exchange.Traditionally, each boy was to bring a gift for a boy in the three-dollar range and the same was true for each girl.
As we were discussing the specifics, a girl raised her hand and suggested that we do away with our traditional policy, and each buy a gift for Jace instead. The enthusiasm grew as the students discussed the kinds of things they knew Jace would like. We took a quick vote and unanimously(意见一致地)agreed to go ahead with this wonderful idea.
With great excitement, the gifts began to come in.Students with bright eyes would eagerly tell me how they found the "perfect gift"and how their parents spent more than three dollars on Jace's gift! As the gifts poured in, I remember being so proud of my thoughtful, selfless students who were truly showing the spirit of Christmas.
After several days of absences, you can imagine our disappointment when we learned that Jace's absences were due to the fact that he had moved away!I was sure of one thing.I couldn't let my students or Jace down.
I found my information sheet and called every number listed. Apparently.Jace's father had lost his job, causing them to relocate. No one knew where they were, and the cell phone number I had would ring with no response despite my continuous efforts. Even into our Christmas vacation,I constantly gave the phone number a shot.

I was the new kid in town. New home. New city. New state. And new school. My dad got a new job, and we had packed up our lives and moved from our old home, school, friends and everything. We moved over summer vacation, so I didn't have to deal with school right away. We'd landed in southern Florida, and we were total strangers.
Summer whizzed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adjusted to the sunshine state with its palm trees and canals everywhere.
I felt anxious about school as I was not an adventurous girl. My head was full of fears and worries. Would I make friends Would I fit in Would I survive in this strange new world Shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. I loved learning. I loved reading. I even loved homework. Loving books and reading helped me get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Even a brand-new group of teachers.
Other kids, though, didn't like me getting top grades, answering questions in class or being delighted with school. I did not win popularity contests. But I couldn't stop being me-loving to read and learn.I felt like a total failure.I tried not to be discouraged.
Then one day,a tall, athletic boy in English class strode right over to me. He introduced himself as being on the school basketball team. It dawned
on me that he was James, the captain!
"Hey,"he said."You do really well in English class.Do you think you could help me "Yes, oh, yes, definitely yes.I could, and I would. We sealed the deal with an exchange of smiles.

Maybe there is a Father Christmas!
Anna stood anxiously staring at the pouring rain while little Molly looked up at a pretty doll in the window of the toy shop on the edge of town. “Mummy, ” Molly said, “that's the doll I would like Father Christmas to bring me. ” A tear rolled down Anna's cheek and she knew it would be impossible this year. They were supposed to start a new life in Spain one and a half years ago before her husband Tim was cruelly taken from them by a car. Their small amount of savings was quickly spent on Tim's funeral costs and necessities, leaving her in heavy debt.
To her relief, the local people had helped to support her through these difficult times and especially Juan, owner of the local grocery store, a single man, who would often put something special into her shopping bag, even though he himself had been going through a difficult period-his mother died of cancer and he was busy handling the sale of his mother's house on the edge of town.
As the rain stopped, Anna and Molly started walking home. She was thinking about buying an umbrella after paying the rent with her upcoming wage when Molly shouted excitedly, “Mummy, what's that on the road ” Anna looked down and saw a bag lying in the water, which was obviously lost because of the sudden rain.
They got home and dried themselves before Anna focused on the bag. Opening it and seeing bundles of money inside, she stood back in shock and cried, “Is this a present from kindness I can pay off my debt, buy Molly's favorite doll and my new umbrella. . . ” Then reality set in, Anna was a very moral person and would never steal even the slightest little thing, let alone bundles of money. She went to bed with all thoughts in her mind.

Early next morning, Anna headed where she decided to go. She walked fast but gracefully to the police station, bathed in the warm sunshine. As a moral person, honesty and justice always dominated her. She would always follow her heart even in heavy debt. On arriving there, she told the police what had happened on that dark and stormy night and handed in the massive amount of money. Two policemen kept necessary records seriously, spoke highly of her and promised to find its owner as soon as possible. A deep sense of pride flooded over Anna when she left the station and headed for work.
At supper, Anna had an unexpected visitor - Juan with a gift box in his hands. Anna invited him in and Molly greeted him happily. After being seated, Juan explained he was almost crushed when he found his money missing. It was Anna’s selfless behavior that lit up his world. Throwing them a warm smile, Juan handed them the beautifully-decorated box and said, “I don’t know how to show my thankfulness. And this is for you and Moly. Wish you a merry Christmas.” Molly exclaimed in great excitement when she was unwrapping the box - it was the very doll she wanted ! Anna smiled, “Maybe there is a Father Christmas!”

I first became conscious of my body image last year in fifth grade. One day I was walking by my mirror getting ready for bed and I noticed that my stomach looked big. I started to really hate that and think I was fat even though my family always told me how skinny I was. It wasn't only my stomach —I started to think my nose was ugly and that my laugh was disgusting. I was even afraid to laugh or smile in public.
Then,in the sixth grade,a popular guy in my class named Luke made it worse. He told his table group that my body looked swollen in skinny jeans. I heard about it from someone else, but then Luke even told me to my face! I couldn't stop thinking about what Luke had said.Even worse.I started to believe it was true, and I hid my skinny jeans all the way at the bottom of my drawer.
I know I cared too much about what other people said and thought about me. I guess I just wanted to be liked. In fact.I really wish I could have just brushed off comments like that, but I couldn't change my personality and what I care about that easily.
Luke's mean comment affected me in a big way.I lost confidence in more than just my body—I started to think that I didn't matter and that I didn't have a place in the world. To make it worse, some people also started telling me that I was not meant to be an author, which is what I really want to be. That especially hurt and I started to feel really sad all the time.
I hadn't really told anyone how I'd been feeling until a couple of months ago when I got a call from my cousin. I'm really close to her, and hearing her voice and laugh made me feel so good inside.I thought about how I used to be that way too,and how I was so sick of feeling sad.

Then I started telling her and it all came out. She seemed so surprised and said how special I was. She started listing all my good qualities, saying I shouldn't listen to people who say mean things because they were probably just feeling bad about themselves or trying to look cool.Definitely, she added,I shouldn't let them tell me how to feel about myself or my body. It was like a sudden wake-up call:focusing on what other people thought of me only made things even worse, and I must learn to love and accept myself for who I am.
When I went back to my bedroom.I looked at myself in the mirror for a long time.I saw what I had never seen in myself before, like my nice grey eyes, my cute smile, and the fact that I am beautiful in my own way.I know some people might still make hurtful comments again, and sometimes I may feel like I am fat again, but next time I will be prepared. I will only think well of myself even when I am feeling sad, and stand up for myself when someone puts me down.In my eyes,I am perfect myself—no one can change that.
