On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail: “We’ re sorry but your work assignment has ended as of today. ” My heart sank. I wasn’t just a single parent; I was the only parent. My paycheck was survival. The next day as we searched for our tree, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed each price tag. “Is everything OK ” Kristil asked. “You seem worried.” “I got some bad news yesterday. I lost my job”, I told her. “Oh no,” Kristil said. “Well, I have $50 from Grandma, and I can give you.” Absolutely not,” I told her. Monday morning, I dropped Kristil at school and set off on my moneymaking pursuits. I sold a precious cup at an antique store, washed dishes in a restaurant and ended the day $120 richer. Over the next week, I furiously applied for jobs as my bank account became smaller. I felt as if the world was closing in on me. On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a birthday party. I watched as she went in, surrounded by all the nice things we couldn’t afford. I drove home defeated. Back at home, I glanced out the window. It had been snowing on and of all morning. I noticed a thin woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old professor, Sister Esther Heffernan whom I hadn’t seen since we’d met for lunch three months ago. It soon dragged me to the cherished days when I first met Sister Esther 10 years ago as her student at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. Sister Esther was understanding, loving and patient. Even after I graduated, Sister Esther kept in touch. I had grown to love her like family.

I rushed to the front of my building. “What are you doing out in this weather ” I asked as we hugged. “I tried to call but couldn't get through, so I thought I would come by,” Sister Esther said. “I have a couple of gifts for you and Kristil.” I made her a cup of tea, and we talked. As she got up to leave, she handed me a Christmas card. “This is for you,” she said as she kissed me on the cheek. I walked her to her car and waved as she pulled away.
As she left, I opened the Christmas card and an envelope fell. As I opened it, I saw there was money inside. I gasped in shock. Hundred-dollar bills poured onto the table. Tears of gratitude puddled in my eyes as I counted the money. Sister Esther had given me $1,000. I silently thanked Sister Esther in my heart. It has been 13 years since that Christmas, but I have never forgotten what Sister Esther did for us.

They went out to a hill station for a week. Both enjoyed their stay at the hill station. After seven days, they planned to return. As soon as they reached the station, they found a bag lying at the station platform .
Chintu noticed it first and picked it up. He opened it and saw a lot of cash and jewelry in it. Chintu tried to hide it in his suitcase. But Banti suggested, “Chintu, we are honest people. We should not keep it with us. Somebody must have lost it and we should ask the people at the station. If someone is able to tell what is inside it, we shall hand over the bag to him or her. Listen to my advice, or you will pay for your foolishness in the end.”
“No, no, you are a fool. Everybody will come to say this is his own bag. I have found it, so this is mine,” Chintu said.
Banti said, “What are you saying Even if you do not want to give it to the real owner, we should divide it into two parts. Both of us have found it, and we have shared every moment, every food, and every joy here together. Therefore, we should divide the cash and jewelry also into two parts.”
“I don’t agree with you. I saw it first, so it is mine.” Saying so, Chintu put the bag into his suitcase. Meanwhile the train was pulling into the station. Chintu and Banti boarded the train. As soon as they took their seats, they began talking with each other. When the night fell, they began feeling sleepy.
After some time the train stopped at a station. Suddenly they saw a few policemen entering their compartment ( 隔间). Far from handing it over to the real owner, you even refused to share it with me. Now when you feel that you are going to get into trouble, you want to share the unpleasantness with me. See how smart you are!” Chintu just wanted to say something when he found the policemen stood beside them.
The policemen saw Chintu’s nervous look obviously. They thought he must have done something bad. So they searched him and his suitcase very carefully and finally found the bag. This was just the bag they had been searching for hours. They arrested him and sent him to prison immediately. At that very moment Chintu felt quite sorry for what he had done.
Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Brown always corrected the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice to improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman who immediately recognized him, because she had read his books and seen his pictures. The woman greeted David warmly. David started to chat with her. He told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.” Then he looked at the woman seriously.
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt happy, hoping his action could make some difference to the boy.

She led the girls into the kitchen. When passing the living room, Sista found that the wallwas decorated with colourful crayon drawings, which seem to be children’s.
