Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry."

I told him that thanks to his generosity and timely help, everything had gone smoothly. When he stopped his taxi outside the airport, I paid him for the “double car ride”, back and forth from the airport to the bus station, together with a generous tip that he turned down. I also gave him an attractive souvenir I had bought at Prague, which he accepted with delight. We became good friends and kept in touch with each other regularly. That’s when her mom told her about a problem at the day-care center where she worked. All day long, kids from a nearby housing project would press their noses against the windows of the center, knocking and begging to use the playground. But the playground was always locked, and only children whose parents paid for day care were allowed to use it.
“That’s when it hit me,” Claudia remembers. “I had really developed my leadership skills and a desire to serve by helping those small businesses. So I went to a teacher at Framingham High School and made a proposal for an after-school program for those children living in the low-income housing project.” Claudia received lots of support from about 20 other teens in a service club at the high school.
The project wasn’t easy. First, Claudia struggled to find a place to house the program. The Framingham Housing Authority finally agreed to donate a facility next door to the day-care center. Claudia immediately organized her friends to collect donations of crayons, paper, scissors, and supplies from teachers and day-care centers. He struggled for 15 years to fill the hole in his soul left by his military service. Then, two years ago, this dogface soldier started working with Bridge to Home Animal Rescue in Eighty Four, Washington County. Fostering (代养) dogs and finding them homes have helped Brooks, now 40 and a state corrections officer, to remove the suffering of daily life.
“Without sounding like a man with a soft heart, there is something to be said about puppy kisses and seeing unconditional love in a time where people need to see more unconditional love,” he said.
Brooks, his wife, Nicole Malesic, and daughters Zaida, 5, and Waverly, 2, have fostered 16 dogs over the past two years. They play with dogs together. They walk and bath them. They frequently make videos and do photo shoots of the animals to encourage adopters (收养者) on social media. “People are looking to enrich their homes,” he said. “People are getting dogs or cats or different companions (陪伴) for their homes because we are dealing with a difficult time.”

Then, Golden received a message that her take-away food order was taking longer than usual-which was unusual, because although she sometimes ordered the food for her two older children’s lunches at school, that morning she had packed their lunches. The teacher furthered the confusion when she told Golden that her children were indeed eating their packed lunches at school-no take-away food in sight.
Golden’s confusion was deepened when she was playing with Barrett at the gate. But in that moment, a car pulled in. Golden felt more confused-the delivery driver got out a huge chain restaurant’s bag which had 31 cheeseburgers!
At first, Golden thought the delivery driver was at the wrong house. I was born in a small village in the mountainous province of Lao Cai in Vietnam. In my poverty-stricken small village, girls hardly had the chance to complete their education. But I was lucky. I was born into a family where my parents supported our education. As one of the very few families that could afford all children to continue to study till high school, my parents faced a lot of negative opinions from our neighbors.
I was not always there for the criticism, however, as I lived in boarding schools for ethnic minority (少数民族) children. There were a lot of girls and boys from different ethnic groups in our schools. In these second homes, I learned from teachers and friends and most importantly, I was trained to live independently and with confidence. And this gave me the motivation to try harder every day.
In 2017, I came to Hanoi, the capital city, as a first-year student at the University of Languages and International Studies. It was a life-changing experience for me. I was thrilled at the fact that the students here were so bright and brilliant. The world became much bigger for me — far different from my small town. “Where are you from Are you an ethnic minority ” Those were the frequent questions I had from my classmates at the beginning. At first, I was afraid of those questions and then I realized that when I began to talk openly about my culture, I was warmly received.
It goes without saying that confidence grows in a nurturing (滋养的) environment. Again, I found myself lucky. Slowly I started to engage in school activities and after some time, I volunteered for community activities.

I’d think, “Why isn’t anyone picking up rubbish People are so unconcerned!” But shortly after that, I said to myself, “Why do I think picking up rubbish is someone else’s duty ” And I couldn’t walk past trash without feeling guilty (内疚的).
So while walking in the college, I began picking up rubbish and made sure the campus was in better shape than I previously found it. My behavior influenced some students. They started to help me out.
Like me, they also picked up rubbish whenever they noticed it. And our college became more beautiful. Seeing that, I began to think, “If I can pick up rubbish outside the college—in other places of the town, it may make a big difference to the town.”
But picking up rubbish in front of many people outside the college needs courage. It could be embarrassing. But it was the right thing to do. I decided to try it.

Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes.
