The sun slowly peeked over the mountain ridge, painting the valley with golden strokes.
We followed the winding path upwards, passing wildflowers at ankle level, then chest-high shrubs, until finally reaching ancient pines towering above.
Morning fog lingered in the hollows, but by midday, every dewdrop on spiderwebs sparkled under direct sunlight.
From the cable car window, the cityscape shrank to miniature: matchbox cars crawled on ribbon roads, skyscrapers stood like colored pencils in a cup.
The sea breeze carried saltiness that clung to our lips, while seagulls' cries mingled with waves' rhythmic applause.
Crunching through autumn leaves, we caught whiffs of woodsmoke from distant cottages, their chimneys sketching thin lines against lavender sky.
My fingers traced the temple's weathered stones, their cool roughness whispering stories of eight centuries.
The night market assaulted our senses: sizzling satay smoke stung eyes, chili aroma tickled nostrils, vendors' chants competed with pop music blaring from shops.
Each step on the cobblestone alley echoed my hesitation, shadows lengthening like doubts as sunset bled across medieval walls.
Laughter bubbled from the plaza fountain, its merry splash a stark contrast to the heavy suitcase dragging at my arm.
The abandoned lighthouse stood sentinel on the cliff, its cracked lens staring vacantly seaward, mirroring my sense of directionless.
Cherry petals snowed around us, their fleeting beauty tightening my throat - tomorrow we would part at this very station.
Twilight draped the savanna in indigo velvet, acacia trees silhouetted like nature's calligraphy.
解析:比喻"velvet/calligraphy"提升画面美感
The glacier groaned and cracked, ancient ice cubes clinking in nature's cocktail shaker.
Dawn tiptoed across rice terraces, gilding each watery step with liquid gold.
Our campfire danced with orange tongues, swallowing twilight stars whole while birthing constellations in rising sparks.

A vacation with my mother
I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother — loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout (放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids ” “What ! Oh, Gosh… I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections. If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. Thinking of this tent, Mom suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed. When the door of our car opened, Mom stormed out instantly and urged us to put up the tent. David and I were asked to pick up some branches to build a fire. And when we came back, Dad and Mom had already lain down the grass comfortably in front of the tent, talking merrily with a local boy at our age, who kept glancing at this tent curiously. Soon we learnt that the boy in rags even didn’t have a home to live in. Of course, Mom “forgot” to take this tent with us again.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. And we also had a nice time living with my grandparents during that trip. But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom. Though she did love going camping, she presented that poor boy with this tent out of sympathy. It was Mom that made my childhood colorful. And it was also she that showed me the true meaning of giving.
The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. But then we were half an hour away from the hotel, where the tent was left behind. Dad recommended buying a new one, while Mom insisted on our going back to fetch it, saying “Forgetful people like me may lose things repeatedly, so it’s unwise to give up the tent.” Finally, we got back the tent and hit the road again. If Mom hadn’t been that absent-minded, it would have saved us the trouble of going back again and again.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. One day, towards evening, we found a great camping site at the foot of a high mountain. David and I helped Dad put up the tent, and Mom was busy preparing supper. When the setting sun cast an orange light over the mountains, the tent was set up and the meal was ready. Sitting around the camp fire, we talked and laughed. Every time we mentioned the funny incidents of the journey a pleasant smile would spread over Mom’s face.
The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. To our delight, Mom gave up the idea of camping in some stranger’s backyard. Instead, we found a wonderful camping site in the wild. It was a clearing in the woods by a small lake, where Dad could catch some fish for dinner. We had no trouble setting up our tent, but we were disappointed to find that Mom forgot to pack up pillows. Needless to say, we all woke up with a sore neck the next morning.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. It was a fantastic trip. We crossed big rivers and vast plains, climbed high mountains, and overlooked deep valleys. During the trip, Mom’s being absent-minded not only got us into much trouble, but also gave us many funny moments. But luckily, she was not so forgetful as to leave me and David behind in the gas station bathrooms. We all arrived at grandparents’ home safe and sound.

Kathy’s family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
“But my friends will be expecting updates about the trip,” Kathy complained. Kathy’s mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Kathy handed her phone over and her mom locked it away.
The drive to the beach house took most of the day. As they turned off the highway onto countryback roads, the clouds darkened. Rain started to pour. “Even more beautiful in the rain,” her mother said. “What do you think, Kathy ” Kathy glared at her mom. “Beautiful,” she muttered.
That night after dinner, Kathy wandered into the kitchen, where her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, “Couldn’t I have my phone back, just for one second Just so I can tell everyone what an amazing time I’m having ”
“Can’t,” he said. “It’s not here. Remember ” Kathy was very annoyed. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookcase in the living room. The books looked as dull as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle. She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o’clock. She had been working for almost two hours! She yawned. The puzzle was less than half done, but she was exhausted. So, she went to bed.

After a quick breakfast, Kathy headed to the beach. Under no circumstances had Kathy expected the scenery to be so spectacular! With the sea wind blowing against her face, Kathy totally lost herself in the stunning views. After half an hour’s leisure walk along the beach, Kathy returned to the house. “How do I spend the rest of the day ” Kathy murmured to herself. Suddenly, the unfinished puzzle caught her attention. She felt a little excited and buried herself in it once again. Every time the shapes met, Kathy was overwhelmed with happiness. Soon, all that were left were a few gaps. She quickly put the remaining pieces into place. The puzzle was completed!
Appreciating the finished puzzle, she realized she hadn’t thought of her cellphone for hours. Trying to preserve the image in her mind, she quietly started taking it apart rather than taking pictures to update about the trip. That, she thought, was just for me. Without the distractions from her cellphone, she found herself engaged in story sharing session with mom and daddy willingly. They spent a high-quality family time together. On arriving home, mom gave her cellphone back. This time, however, she had no intention to share but to keep all the great memories in her mind.

Winter break was approaching, and all Scott wanted to do was go snowboarding. Unfortunately, Scott's parents had different plans. They had booked a weeklong tropical cruise Scott hated warm weather and asked if he could just stay at his best friend's house so he could snowboard every day at the local mountain. His parents didn't want to hear anything of it. He kept debating them about the topic, but they would not change their minds. Family time was important to them, and it was tradition that they spend winter break together.
The week of the cruise arrived, and Scott continued to mumble (咕哝) his complaints as he and his family left their house to head south. Scott's dad told him that he would only make the vacation worse for himself if he didn't change his attitude and open his mind to a new experience. Scott still couldn't stop thinking about all of the snow he was leaving behind.
When they arrived at the port to board the ship, Scott had a hard time admitting that he was actually impressed with the size of the ship. He had seen the brochures but seeing the ship in person was a whole different animal. Then he remembered that the brochure said something about a surfing pool. Maybe surfing would be somewhat like snowboarding. After all, it involved riding a board.
Scott climbed aboard the ship with his parents, and then they walked around to check everything out. He couldn't believe how fancy the accommodations were. The dining room looked like a royal hall; the game room had all of his favorite games; the ship's deck (甲板) had several different swimming pools for different purposes. Then Scott saw the surfing pool. It was incredible. It wasn't a big pool, but it had big waves, and the young man who was demonstrating how to ride the waves made it look like a ton of fun.

When Scott and his parents had their swim suits on, Scott's dad went first and only lasted about five seconds before he wiped out. Then it was his mom's turn. She actually made it longer than his dad did. When it was Scott's turn, he was excited but a little bit nervous. He hopped on the board and took a stance similar to his snowboarding stance. Then the waves started. It felt similar to snowboarding but different at the same time. On his first ride, Scott rode for almost 30 seconds before wiping out.He was crazy about it though.
Gradually, Scott began to love the cruise. He got to know the people who often surfed there quite well. By the time the weeklong cruise was over, Scott had new friends he planned to keep in touch. Scott is the brave and lucky one since only eight percent of the experiencer or so really fell in love with it among a lot of the passengers who tried surfing the first day of the cruise. With a new hobby, and great memories, he apologized to his parents for earliest moaning and groaning and told them it was his best vacation ever.

It was August. We were on vacation, just my six-year-old son Kevin and I, for my husband was always busy. Having driven from our home in the city to a remote and peaceful place, we wouldn’t see friends or family—it would be a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We had hiked about half mile to an attractive spot called Diana’s Baths, which afforded visitors an expanse of transparent water. The water flows and then falls off a series of big flat stones, making itself a small waterfall, about 7 inches high.
Several couples and their kids in swimsuits were playing to their heart’s content in the water. We joined them. I watched as some younger parents nervously drove their babies away from the stones edges. Fast-moving water made standing there quite dangerous, for I saw a certain kid with curly hair missed a step and almost fell down. The air was full of shouts and laughter. I felt so lucky that I didn’t always need to fix my eyes on my son. Kevin could navigate his physical space with more confidence and care. But I was still terrified when I saw Kevin jump between the slippery rocks.
But with the passing of time, I soon relaxed, and we were both having fun, my kid splashing and kicking in the cool water, laughing heartily as I put my head under the cold running water.
Then seconds later, every fear I’d ever had rose to the surface. I lifted my head, turned and saw Kevin sitting between two stones, with the rushing water flowing around him. I could see he was shaking sometimes because of the water rapids. I yelled at him to get out. He yelled back something that I couldn’t hear.

Suddenly he disappeared in front of my eyes. Jumping to my feet, I let out screams, “Somebody help my son!” Hardly had I yelled when a woman rushed to the stones’ edge and jumped down. Following her with unsteady steps, I went down too, seeing her scooping up my son. His eyes remained closed. Having laid my son on his back, she checked his pulse and began to perform first aid. Suddenly, I saw my son opened his eyes. Indescribable delight filled my heart.
When Kevin returned to normal, I learned the woman was a nurse. “Your son just suffered a minor back injury. Don’t worry,” she comforted me. “It was you that saved my son,” I said, tears flooding down my cheeks. She held my hands, a big smile shining from her face, and said that anyone would have done the same. We had a very pleasant chat, and I knew her name was Lisa. Her random kindness indeed made a big difference and I would follow her example.

Adventures Through the Gorge
We put the raft in the calm, cold water.I looked down. The water was like a mirror. It was a foggy morning,so I could barely make out what was down the river. When we took our places in the raft,I was in the back with my dad right across from me.Our tour guide was telling us the basics of rafting, and it seemed she was patronizing us!I was terrified.Since I was in the back,I was sure I would be the one to fall out.But I have always been an optimist,so I thought it would turn out okay.
Then I looked up and saw a big, gray cloud.I looked down at the river, and it started to get louder and closer to us;soon raindrops pelted us.Once we moved out of the rain, the clouds faded away, and the sun was shining down on us for the rest of the day.As I looked around,I saw the monstrous, green trees standing over me.It was beautiful.
As we moved farther down the river,I heard the water flowing gracefully. When we moved deeper into the gorge,it got louder and louder. This was our first rapids. It seemed that we were approaching the rapids slowly, but we were at the top of the rapids in the blink of an eye.It felt like time frozen.I was so excited and nervous;I thought I was going to die.It was a bumpy ride down.Getting splashed with water,we raced up and down the rocks. There was not a patch of dry skin on us by the time we hit the bottom.
After we got through the rapids,I was so excited!Going down made me feel I could do anything. Our tour guide told us we were going to approach Category V rapids. It was more intense than the Category I rapids, and I got a little more nervous. It took us a little while to get to the rapids because we had to go down a long river. We were allowed to jump o the raft and swim down the river until we had to get back in.

After racing down all of the rapids,I was no longer scared.“What did you think about that Category V rapids ” my dad asked.“I was super nervous at first. But when we hit the bottom,I wanted to do it once more.” “Would you say you become more confident of yourself ” he continued.“Yes,I would say I become much more confident of myself.” I smiled. We walked towards our campsite.

This past summer, I joined my sister's family for their annual Adirondack vacation in a rented cottage on a lake, the same place my family has stayed since I was a little kid. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and sand castle building on the beach.
By the third day, I had noticed that my ten-year-old niece, Jannie, had spent most of her time watching cable TV and browsing through the gift shops in town. Not exactly the wilderness experience I remembered from my youth. So, at dinner, I told Jannie we should hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning, which was called Rocky Point because the peak is bare and rock-covered.
"Well." replied Jannie, "Tomorrow there are some shows on the Disney Channel, so I'm going to be pretty busy."
"When your mother and I used to come here when we were your age, we were too busy swimming and hiking up mountains."
"Sounds more like punishment than a vacation." She shrugged her shoulders. "Besides, I don't think I can walk that far."
When I said it only took a half-hour of steady walking to get to the top. She grumbled, "Fine, I'll go." I knew she was agreeing just to shut me up, but I would take anything I could get.
The next morning was a perfect day for a hike, with sunshine and clear skies. I got up early and took some sandwiches and water bottles, which I tucked into my backpack along with the bug spray and the camera.
Jannie came shuffling downstairs, sighed dramatically, rolled her eyes and announced in a very unenthusiastic, robot-like voice. "I'm ready to go hiking, Uncle David." Anyway, we climbed into my car and drove to the trailhead about ten minutes away. As we stood at the edge of the parking lot and looked down the shaded trail that led into the woods. "I am still not sure this is a good idea, but if you and Mom could do it, I can too, I guess."

For the moment she was determined to start our journey. About 200 yards into the forest, the trail began to climb a steep slope. I pointed out some rarely-seen trees and flowering plants, which I explained were endangered species. She didn’t share my enthusiasm. She was thirsty, tired, sweaty and bored. I handed her the water bottle as she sat on a fallen log and took a break. “You know, I think we’re almost to the top,” I told her. “You already said that three times, and we’re not there yet.” she replied. She grumbled another complain as we continued on. She might not have been happy, but at least I was proud that she had the determination not to quit before we reached the top.
A while later we did make it to the top. Jannie looked up, noticing we were no longer under the trees. When she stopped, looked around and saw where we were, her jaw dropped, her eyes opened wide and she shouted: “Oh, I don’t believe it. We’re on top of the world. It’s awesome!” A refreshing breeze brushed the mountaintop, not a cloud was in the sky and miles and miles of trees and lakes spread out below us. We sat on a large rock and took it in the view, while eating our sandwiches and pointing out islands and roads and, of course, the cottage where we were staying. It had taken us almost an hour to make the climb, but it was worth it.
