高考真题演练
2023年6月新高考(写作比赛)
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.
模拟演练
01
阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Here’s the story of my growth over the past year. It’s a story of how I found the strength to change myself for better and then how I get rid of my fears to be even better. If anyone is inspired by this, that’s wonderful.
I’d been stuck as this incredibly insecure, underconfident and just scared individual for years and years. Since childhood I’d been stuck like this. Kids I met for the first time looked at me rudely and unkindly. Even my friends—actually, I had very few friends because I just felt too ashamed and frightened to make some, though I was eager to and felt extremely lonely in the depth of my heart—laughed at me and gave me bad nicknames. I felt terrible, but I’d just resigned to a life where I’d be afraid of everything and be this “introvert” (内向的人) or whatever. I thought I would never be able to change, never, for my whole life.
But then it all started changing. Something clicked. I suddenly determined to go on a diet, and lost some weight. It was tough. I felt hungry all the time. I was always tempted by the smell of bread and hamburger, even when I didn’t see them. But the toughest thing was that even if I had just had my meals, I felt hunger mentally. However, I held on. In over a period of 6 months I finally managed to stick to one of my diets. I didn’t know how. But I did make it.
The loss of 90 lbs brought me from overweight straight down to underweight. This isn’t the best part. More importantly and inspiringly, I suddenly found strength in me. I realized I could be totally different. And maybe, I could even be whatever I wanted to be. This taught me that I could change myself.
Then I wondered, perhaps, I could also get rid of those of my fears, just like I succeeded in losing my extra pounds. It might not be easy, but it might not be that difficult.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右:
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Chance presented itself soon.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
It was from that point on that I started changing rapidly.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Chance presented itself soon. One single time, I heard about a public speaking thing going on at my university, and for the first time, I actually managed to build up the courage to go there. It was liberating. For the first time I was able to share my story, and able to do it in front of dozens of people potentially judging me, and suddenly all the random fears about speaking publicly started disappearing. This taught me I could get rid of my fears.
It was from that point on that I started changing rapidly. Using the fact that I could change, and that I could get rid of my fears, I started working on them one by one. My fear of greeting strangers, my fear of talking to strangers, my fear of asking simple questions I should ‘already know’, my fear of hanging out with people, my fear of not knowing things, my fear of making new friends, classmates and teachers, my fear of being myself, all of which help make me a better one.

02 Be a true runner
For me, it was normal to feel lost at the intercamp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the twomile race around the lake, I knew I was no one’s first choice.
I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12yearold who hasn’t been in other events to run the twomile!”
He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.
“But I don’t know the way around the lake!”
“You’re in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.
Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.”
At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.
“On your mark… Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill’s heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”
I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.
It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
In a moment, Bill was up and running. I couldn’t think of anything but to follow him closely. I could even feel the air hitting my face and I was totally worn out. Naturally, my pace slowed down. Just at the moment, Barry’s words “Just follow Bill” called me back. Convinced that I was no longer a loser, I refreshed up again and accelerated and soon I was quite close to Bill again. Injected with confidence, I headed for the finishing line. The gun cracked again, announcing the last 200 meters. I closed my eyes, threw my head back and ran with my last ounce of strength, in the direction of the dream line.
I didn’t know when I crossed the line. I still kept running on when a thunderous applause burst, which signaled the birth of the champion. I stopped and opened my eyes and saw my camp of kids and the camp counsellor gathering around me. “We have won the race! We are the champion!” they shouted and cheered, throwing me in the air. Showered with hugs and applause and whistles, I felt a surge of gaiety sweeping over me. To me, the race meant more than a champion; it well proved that I was not a loser as an athlete and that I could further explore my potential. Just as Hemingway put it, “The true nobility is superior to your former self.”

One afternoon after school, Mary and his brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her handphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “ Keith, the girl left behind her handphone.” Keith looked at the handphone. It was one of the latest models on the market. Looking very sleek, it was red in color with a black cover. The handphone must be expensive.
Keith had always wanted a handphone, But his parents refused. He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on very word, “ I want to take the handphone, ” Mary could not believe her eyes. She merely stared at her brother, “ you can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it ”
Having made the decision, Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly. Outside the café, he ran to his bicycle. Mary had to run after him.
Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Looking at the handphone, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell father about this handphone ”
Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.”
Mary said, “ Now you are lying, too. ” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest
Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone, “This phone number is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone.” She was trying her best to talk some sense into him.

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze. It felt as though my soul departed my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the roster (名单) posted on the wall of the locker room. My heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends’ names on that list but could not find mine. At that moment, I froze. I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball team while I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. “Hey coach, are you sure that the roster you posted is correct ” I asked anxiously, dreading (担心) his answer.
“Yes, the names on the list are finalized. Sorry if you did not make it this year, there is always next year,” the coach replied.
I could feel the hot, bitter tears filling my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. Trying to forget about the situation, I headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. Walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind was also blank for the rest of the school day. Everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the rear of the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured (绕道) around the side of the school to avoid them, trying not to think about being the only one in our friend group failing to make the team.
I saw my father’s car pull up near the school lot, and I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, played the radio, and started driving home.

I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my hands. I felt the string of the package softly and then, unable to contain my curiosity any longer, I tore it open. It was a bright, brand new laptop. I had scored straight as for my O level examination and this was my reward. I had always envied my friends who were exchanging news about ‘chat rooms’, ‘instant messaging’ and ‘emailing’, all of which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.
It started out simply enough. I was searching for some information online when I came across a social networking site. Soon I became attracted to my newfound electronic friend. I began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became addicted to Facebook and Twitter. I had never imagined that the day would come when I would be controlled entirely by the glowing screen before me. Whenever I was not glued to these social networking sites, I would be going through gossip or fashion websites.
As time passed, I realized that I was addicted to the Internet. During weekends, when I had more time on my hands, I could easily spend a few hours on my laptop. It came to a point where I chose to lock myself in my room, refusing to come out and take part in family discussions. I preferred to stay connected to the people I made friends with on the Internet although I had never met them. Soon I was spending the whole hours of the morning surfing on the Internet. Sleep was reduced to small naps and my grades at school also began getting from bad to worse.

【答案】 It was about this time that my parents noticed my change. They voiced their disapproval. It became obvious to them that I was spending too much time on the Internet. I was asked to slow down my usage of the Internet. Yet, however hard I tried, I was unable to pull myself away, unable to end my chat sessions, and unable to concentrate on my lessons. I was desperate for just another click, just another look at my email or message board.
Then one day, my father took away my laptop. I cried and objected but in vain. Dad had made up his mind. Over time, I realized that Dad and Mum had always wanted the best for me. That was when I decided to take the big step—to conquer my internet addiction. Quitting was harder than I had expected. But with dogged determination, I knew that I would be able to do it. I promised my parents that I would turn over a new leaf.

After filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer. I took what I could get a teaching job in what I considered a distant wild area; western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen—teaching English.
School started I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth grade classseventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love for the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs (纸团) and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounds reasonable, but the text evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my task master (监工), known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each otherwhile the girls filed (锉) their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn't happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly victorious that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period I had to face him.

After class, I walked to his of fice, took a deep breath, and opened the door. My boss was sitting in his chair with a hardened face, gazing at me long and hard. Anxious and ashamed, I said nothing, wondering if he would fire me right away. He handed me an envelope, which definitely added more anxiety to me at that moment. However, my eyes went wide open when I opened it and read the letter. It was not an unemployment letter but a letter with several suggestions about my teaching, one of which was highlighted in red: An educator should respect students, feelings. Almost immediately, a warm glow of emotion rose inside me. As I went out of the office, I made up my mind to change my attitude.
Para 2:
Inspired by his advice, I walked towards the classroom, determined to make a change. As the bell rang, I stood on the platform, eyes wandering across the classroom. The students seemed to expecting another boring and dull English lesson, some dropping their eyes and some whispering in the back rows. I cleared my throat and announced, “Boys and girls, let’s begin with your voice about my literature lesson.” Suddenly, a complete silence fell over. Each lifted his heads and cast me a puzzled look. Flashing a smile, I encouraged, “Anything you’d like to say!” At this, the students got stirred up. The class soon amazingly came to life thanks to their brilliant voices, which brought me to what my strictest boss enlightened me: respecting the students instead of ignoring them will make a difference.

Lightning flashed through the darkness over Sibson’s bedroom skylight(天窗). Sibson was shaken by a clap of thunder before he knew what was happening. The storm had moved directly through his twostory wooden house. Then he heard the smoke alarm beeping.
Sibson rushed down the stairs barefoot to check. He opened the door to the basement, and flames exploded out. Sibson ran back upstairs to call 911 from his bedroom. “I felt glad because the room had a separate outdoor stairway,” he explained to the media later.
But the phone didn’t work, and when he tried to go down the outdoor stairway, he was stopped by a wall of flames. Sibson realized he was trapped. Suddenly, a piece of wood fell from the roof. Sharp pain raced through his body as he looked down and found his leg bleeding.
Sibson’s house was three kilometers off the main road and was so well hidden by trees that he knew calling for help would be fruitless.
Up a hill nearby lived Sibson’s neighbor, Huggons. He was lying in bed when something like a smoke alarm struck his ears. He jumped out of bed, took his phone and flashlight, and headed down the hillside toward the noise. That was when he saw the rolling heavy smoke.
Huggons dialed 911, and the operator warned him not to enter the house. But Huggons said, “There is no way I am going to listen to Sibson scream and die in that fire.”
“Anyone there ” Huggons called out. Then he heard “Help! I’m trapped!” coming from the second floor balcony. He entered the house, but soon had to run back to catch his breath.
After one more attempt to get inside the house, Huggons gave up and circled around back. The wind parted the smoke just enough for him to catch sight of Sibson. But there was no way to get to him.
With the wind fueling the fire, there was no time to waste and the second floor seemed to be falling down in the next minute.

【答案】
With the wind fueling the fire, there was no time to waste and the second floor seemed to be falling down in the next minute. Sibson was in great pain in the fire, and Huggons struggled to find a solution. He looked around, got a fire extinguisher, and tried to rush onto the balcony again to save Sibson, but the fire was too intense for him to get near. Huggons was anxious as the second floor of the house was about to collapse.
“Go! Leave me alone!” shouted Sibson with desperate tears in his eyes, “It will kill you, too.” Huggons was fightened but did not want to leave him alone. He shone the flashlight into the woods and noticed a ladder. He took it over to the balcony and pulled Sibson down just as the second floor of the house fell off. Sibson is still 40 when he tells the story. “I was alone that night,” he says. “Then I heard the most beautiful sound in my life. It was Huggons.”

Groups of incoming freshman happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother’s side to tour the campus with other freshmen; I felt a little anxious. We followed the senior tour guide. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college...
My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, “Hi, I’m Jennifer.” “I’m Lauren,” I replied. “Where do you prefer to live At home or on campus ” she said. Before I could reply, the tour guide announced it was time to create our schedules and select the courses we wanted to take.
We crowded into the Student Activity Center. Three seniors handed out thick course bulletins (课程公告) and forms that needed to be filled out. All around me, the sounds of turning papers and writing sounded like those given by an alarm clock. Others seemed to be moving through the process quickly but I hadn’t even opened my course catalog (目录).
“Focus,” I told myself. “just read through the catalog and find the course you like and a schedule that works” psychology A or B, Geology 101, English, history, sections 1, 2, 3…The list went on and on.
I panicked and almost started to cry. How was I supposed to know how to complete it I was just relearning how to live in the real world, and they wanted me to make a schedule. How I wished someone could help me.
Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms.

【答案】
Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms. Many of them rushed out to meet their parents. I couldn’t breathe and was feeling anxious. My head was pounding. Moments later, I was crying. And several students stared at me. One of the seniors in charge walked over my table. “What’s the matter ” she asked impatiently. “I... I can’t do this!” I said. “All you have to do is make your schedule, just like everybody else,” she said, clearly annoyed.
Then, I felt a warm hand on my shoulder. I looked back and found Jennifer standing behind me. “Everything is alright,” she told the senior. “I’ll help her.” The senior walked away. “What’s wrong, sweetie ” Jennifer asked. Hearing Jennifer’s kind words, I cried even harder, saying, “It’s just too much!” Then Jennifer put her arm around me and said, “Let me instruct you.” She then guided me through the process step by step until I completely my schedule. Later when saying goodbye, we made a promise to keep in touch.

模拟演练

“Now, parents and students separate into two groups. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour.”
Groups of incoming freshman happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother’s side to tour the campus with other freshmen; I felt a little anxious. We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made causal introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this After all, it had only been a few months since I left the hospital.

My school had a tradition during the ninthgrade graduation: A beautiful gold and green jacket (the school colors) was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.
I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forward very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed five children, so I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us because we couldn’t afford it. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.
One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it! I don’t care who her father is; her grades can’t match Martha’s at all. I won’t lie or falsify (伪造) records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.
But Mr. Boone’s voice sounded calm. “Joann’s father is not only on the Board (董事会), but he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”
The pounding in my ears drowned out the rest of the words, only a word here and there filtered through. “…Martha is Mexican…resign … won’t do it …”
To this day I don’t remember how I made it through the rest of the afternoon. That night, I cried into my pillow so Grandmother wouldn’t hear me.
The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There’s been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won’t cover the complete cost of the jacket. So, if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.”
Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said, “I’ll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” That day, I cried sadly on the walk home.

Rebecca stretched her tired back. “That’s the last seedling(种树苗),Pa. Have we planted enough ”Pa walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. “No,” he said. “We have to plant trees all the way to that rock over there. We’ll need about twenty more seedlings.”
“I’ll get the seedlings.” offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the cotton field. “You’d better let me go, Miss Petticoats,” teased her twin brother, William. “There are dangers all over this prairie(牧场/草原)“You may both go,” said Pa. “But hurry back. I’d like to finish before sundown.”
They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew.Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand.“There! That’s twenty, with a few to spare.” said Rebecca.“OK,” said William. He led the way to the riverbank, then stopped.
“Look! There’s the dugout(防空壕)we lived in when we moved here last year.” He pointed to a hole in the grassy river bank. “Come on, let’s go inside.” “No,” Rebecca said, “Pa is waiting. Besides, it’s hard telling what’s in there.” “Then you start back.” said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran to the dugout and stepped inside.
Rebecca tied the seedlings into her long apron(围裙)and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks.A huge prairie rattlesnake(响尾蛇)moved along the river bank.It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiled up on the warm sunny bank.“William!” Rebecca shouted. “Don’t come out!”
“Huh ” Williams face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout. Rebecca pointed toward the rattler. William's face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward Rebecca, then he glanced behind himself. Rebecca knew what he was thinking: “Were there more snakes waiting in the shadowy corners of the dugout ”
Rebecca’s mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head. It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope.“Don’t move,” she said to William in a soft voice. “When I say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can.”Rebecca removed the skirtlike petticoat(衬裙)from beneath her dress, then dipped it into the river. She squeezed out some of the water, then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the dugout’s opening.

Jessie had two days’leave in January this year. She surfed the Internet for cheap travel deals and found the most impressive to be a twoday trip to Dublin. Jessie had never visited Ireland so she knew this was the destination for her.
She arrived in Dublin and headed for her hotel. She was excited. When she found her hotel, she paid her money for both nights in advance. The receptionist (接待员) said that was possibly the smartest thing she had done since she decided to take the trip. Jessie dropped her bags in her room and immediately went out to check out some of the sights. It was getting late as Jessie wandered in the streets and decided that even though she was starving, she would rather wait to have dinner later after having a drink.
She headed into the closest pub. Jessie noticed a rather strangelooking man staring at her from across the room. He walked to her table and asked her in his most polite manner if she would like to have a beer. After about ten seconds of thought, Jessie came to the conclusion that she would and accepted the offer. But she proposed that she should treat him to some fruits. The man smiled and accepted.
Their conversation was mainly about places they had been and places they wanted to go. Jessie soon found out that he was traveling alone too and as soon as he started mentioning that he was staying in the same hotel as her, Jessie swiftly rose from her seat to get another drink.
Searching through her bag Jessie found that her wallet was gone! Immediately she realized she took the wrong bag. Her wallet was in another bag. Jessie didn’t panic at first until it hit her that without it, she had not one penny in hand. She was starving. Worst of all, she had generously proposed a treat to the man.

Prissy Baker was in Oscar Miller’s store New Year’s morning when her uncle, Richard Baker, a bachelor, came in. He did not look at Prissy, nor did she wish him a happy New Year. Uncle Richard had not been on speaking terms with her or her father for eight years. When she had been a little girl they had been great friends; but that was before the quarrel.
When Prissy had been nine years old, Richard and Irving Baker had quarreled over the division of a piece of property. The fault had been mainly on Richard’s side, and that very fact made him all the more stubborn. He had never spoken to his brother since, and he declared he never would. Prissy and her father felt very badly over it, but Uncle Richard seemed to have completely forgotten them.
Richard told Mr. Miller that he was on business but that he didn’t like it.“Well, I always like a good dinner on New Year’s,” said Richard. “It’s about the only way I can celebrate. I got everything ready last night, but I won’t get back before one o’clock, so I think I’ll have to put up with a cold bite.”
After Richard had driven away, Prissy walked thoughtfully home. She had planned to spend a holiday with a new book. She did not even mean to cook dinner, for her father had had to go to the town that morning and would be gone the whole day. There was nobody else to cook dinner for. Prissy’s mother had died long ago.
Suddenly an idea popped into Prissy’s head. Dared she Oh, she never could! But he would never know. There would be plenty of time!
Prissy had no trouble breaking into Uncle Richard’s house, for the woodshed door was unfastened. She tripped into the kitchen with rosy cheeks and mischief sparkling in her eyes. In a short time, the kitchen was full of appetizing odors. As the clock struck twelve, Prissy had the table set.
Prissy was about to slip away when the door was pushed open.

It was a rainy winter evening. Joe could see an old lady on the side of the road waiting for help. So he stopped his car and got out of his car. When he came closer to her, the lady looked in despair. No one had stopped to help her for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her He didn’t look safe. Joe could see that she was scared. Knowing how she felt, Joe said quickly. “I’m here to help you, ma’am. It is too cold outside. Please go and stay inside the car. By the way, my name is Joe.”
Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. While Joe was changing the tire, the lady rolled down the window and started to talk to him. She told him that she was only passing through. She was very grateful that he came to help her. Joe just smiled as he put the flat tire in the trunk (后备箱).
“How much do I owe you ” the lady asked, then adding that any amount would be all right. Joe, however, rejected the payment. “You don’t owe me a thing. I’m only passing through. Nellie and I have been best friends for if long as I can remember. We were born only a few days apart, so every year we planned a combined birthday. When we were in seventh grade, our moms said we could invite boys to our party.
We were writing out the invitation list when my mom came up. “What about inviting John ” Mom asked.
John had been in our class for only two months, but he got better grades in math and science than anyone else in class. He was a loner, though, and hadn’t made many friends.
I wrinkled my nose. “Mom. he wears the same pants every day. How could he even afford a costume ”
“The same pants ” Mom frowned.
“Yes. Brown corduroy ones” I sighed.
After school the next day, as Nellie and I were cutting paper for decorations, Mom handed me an envelope.
“Nellie's mom and I thought it’d be nice for you two to give this to John,” Mom said as she headed back to her office.
I opened the envelope delicately. Inside was a gift certificate for our favorite department store. Staring at the certificate in shock, we both knew how many cute clothes that would buy.
“So, are we going to hand it to him ” I asked.
“How embarrassing that would be!” Nellie said.
Indeed, John would be ashamed if we gave him money for clothes. “What if we slip it into his desk when no one is looking ” I proposed.
“He’d probably give it to the teacher, and then we’d have to say it was for him in front of the whole class.” Nellie rolled her eyes. More embarrassing. We had to think of something else.
“I have an idea.” Nellie snatched the envelope.
“What ”
“I won't tell you.” Nellie sang as she ran away.

As I was coming into Middle School, Grade Six, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same Middle School as me! At first things were great, she introduced me to her fiend, Amy and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer was very controlling: I couldn't make new friends, because if I hung out with different people, she would decide that I was "mad at her and Amy". So I didn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend became a battle between Amy and me.
Jennifer wanted to be the "leader" of our little group. Amy and I were never partners in class projects or gym; it was always, "Who gets the privilege(荣耀)of being Jennifer's partner." It was either Jennifer liked me and she left Amy out or Jennifer liked Amy and she left me out. Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's number one. Being Jennifer's friend became the most important thing in the world.
I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes, so we could walk together to our next class. Amy and Jennifer chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting". No "Sorry we took so long". It was as if they couldn't even see me. Yet I still waited after every single class.
Most of the time we gossiped(传播流言蜚语)about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy. And I'm sure she had a list of bad things about me, too. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody, depressed, lonely, and I didn't smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry. I felt so left out.
