The prosthetic leg rubbed against his skin painfully, but each red mark was like a mark of his courage.(义肢摩擦着他的皮肤,疼得厉害,但每一道红印都像是他勇气的印记。)
like a mark of his courage运用比喻的修辞手法,将红印比作勇气的印记,直观地展现出人物在面对生理挑战时的勇敢,强化了抗争的感觉。
Chemotherapy made her feel extremely weak, but it couldn't put out the fire of hope in her eyes.(化疗让她感到极度虚弱,但却无法扑灭她眼中希望的火焰。)
用the fire of hope比喻希望,通过couldn't put out形成对比,突出她内心希望的坚定,展现出人物在困境中不放弃的精神。
The feeling of stage fright made her throat feel tight, but when she started singing, her first note was like a free flying bird.(怯场的感觉让她喉咙发紧,但当她开始唱歌时,第一个音符就像一只自由飞翔的鸟儿。)
Because of his stutter, his words seemed to be stuck like birds in a cage, but writing poems helped him express himself freely.(因为口吃,他的话就像被困在笼子里的鸟儿一样说不出来,但写诗帮助他自由地表达自己。)
用writing poems helped...
There were calluses on her palms. They were like medals, showing how hard she practiced at night.(她的手掌上有老茧。
showing...
His hands were shaking, but he still painted carefully on the canvas.(他的手在颤抖,但他仍然在画布上认真地作画。)
Other people saw his limp as a disadvantage, but he turned it into a special rhythm, just like his unique fingerprint.(别人把他的跛行看作是一种缺陷,但他却把它变成了一种独特的节奏,就像他独一无二的指纹一样。)
Before, the wheelchair made him feel bad, but now he regards it as his good friend and moves forward with it.(以前,轮椅让他感觉很糟糕,但现在他把它当作自己的好朋友,和它一起向前。)
解析:made him feel bad和regards...as都是很基础的表达,清晰地展现了人物对轮椅态度的转变。
The violin string broke suddenly and hit his cheek. The pain reminded him that things don't always go perfectly.(小提琴的琴弦突然断了,抽到了他的脸颊。
The flood covered her textbooks, but the knowledge in her mind was like life jackets that could help her.(洪水淹没了她的课本,但她脑海中的知识就像救生衣一样,可以帮助她。)
A dandelion seed fell on his cast. It made him think that there might be a new beginning.(一颗蒲公英种子落在他的石膏上。
The broken mirror didn't show a broken image. Instead, it made him realize that he could still be strong and put himself back together.(破碎的镜子没有映出破碎的影像。
解析:didn't show和made him realize简洁明了地呈现出镜子破碎这一事件对人物的影响。
She was so tired that her eyelids felt very heavy, like they had weights on them. But her voice was very clear, just like the sound of a bell.(她太累了,眼皮感觉非常沉重,就好像上面压了重物一样。
解析:felt very heavy和like they had weights on them用简单的语言和比喻,描述出疲惫时眼皮的沉重感。just like the sound of a bell将声音比作钟声,使读者能更直观地感受到声音的清晰,通过触觉和听觉的对比,让读者更深刻地体会到人物的状态。
The finish line was like a beating heart, and its rhythm was the same as his heavy breathing.(终点线就像一颗跳动的心脏,它的节奏和他沉重的呼吸一样。)
She climbed up the cliff with her hands, leaving marks of her determination on the stone.(她用手爬上悬崖,在石头上留下了她决心的痕迹。)
His dreams inspired him a lot and helped him overcome all the difficulties.(他的梦想极大地激励了他,帮助他克服了所有困难。)

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

For many years, I had a recurring dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you'll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books ”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition. My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret. I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That's the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why don't you come back to school ”
I laughed: “There's no way! I'm 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

Days of January were passing and every girl of the girls’ school was very happy as the selections for plays and dances for the annual function were started.
Sneha’s class teacher, Pravina, asked Sneha, her favorite student, to play the leading character in a play. Because she was never allowed to play a male character, Sneha jumped with joy, but suddenly she became so serious about the costumes (戏服).
“How many times I have to tell you not to participate in plays and dances! Can’t you understand that we can’t buy or borrow the costly costume You can take part in debates, quizes, or essay competitions in which you don’t have to spend money and you can enrich your knowledge,” her mother said angrily when Sneha told her about it.
The reason behind all this was their financial condition. Sneha always had an idea about it in her home and she was mature enough to say NO to any money demanding condition. This time, however, the desire of fame and the excitement of the activity were overcoming her fear.
Sneha went in her room hiding her sadness deep in her heart. She was so nervous about what was going to happen when she would tell Pravina about leaving the play. Would she warn her not to allow her in any competition Now it was clear that she had to leave the play.
The next day, downhearted Sneha acted like nothing had happened and got ready for school. Her mom ordered her to say NO for the play.
Sneha always loved Pravina because whenever there was a play or dance, the girls did not need to be worried about anything related with money. She would find a way to help. But Sneha didn’t want to tell her the truth.
Paragraph l:
Sneha went to the teacher,“I don’t want to take part in the play and I’m leaving.”

Every girl dreams and Jasmine is no exception. When Jasmine was young, she had read dozens of books on how to be a ballerina(芭蕾舞者), Suan Lake was her favorite and she had always wanted to become the white swan in it. Later, she started taking ballet lessons and all her teachers confirmed she was a good student. In the hope of becoming a great ballerina, she trained hard on a daily basis.
One day, she saw an advertisement that a famous ballerina troupe(舞团)would be performing in her hometown. And the whole town was talking about the troupe leader, who was said to be the best ballet dancer in the world. Her thoughts ran wild. "I must meet the leader of the troupe and show him my skills" she murmured to herself.
She dressed herself in her best ballerina costume and managed to slip in the backstage without being noticed. To her luck, the leader entered the dressing room and she timidly knocked at the door "Come in" said a gentle voice. Opening the door, Jasmine saw a tall and slim man with a calm look on his face. She bravely approached him and handed him a bunch of red roses and in her excitement the thorns pricked(刺痛)her hand but she did not pay much attention to the pain.
The leader observed her action as she told him her dream. "Alright, you dance and I will give you my advice."
But half way through the dance he stopped her and said, "I'm sorry you're not good enough!" On hearing this, Jasmine's eyes opened wide in shock. It was seconds before she could absorb what was said to her, "Not good enough !" she asked in disbelief. "Yes, not good enough." replied the leader. Boiled in shame and rage, Jasmine ran out of the dressing room as fast as her legs could carry her. The leader's words were a huge blow to her confidence. Despite being so sad, she didn't give up her dream.

My family immigrated to Canada when I was about one year old. In those early years, we did not have much money. Our home was a simple rented apartment, which was rather poorly furnished. There certainly was not enough money for expensive outings. As a result, our weekends were filled with simple pleasures that we could do for free, like picnics, bike rides, and my favorite—trips to the library.
Thanks to the library’s children’s section, I fell in love with stories—silly ones, moving ones, and even educational ones. I would have my parents read the books that we borrowed over and over again until we needed to return them, or I would page through them myself, imagining the stories in my head, even though I was too young to read the words.
When I was about five years old and finally started to read on my own, I had a curious thought: I knew we could get books from the library or buy them in store s if we had the money, but where did books come from
I asked my mother this question, to which she replied that the stories I loved were created in the imaginations of people called “writers” These people then wrote them down so they could be s hared with others.
Four decades later, I still remember that moment. It was as though I had been struck by lightning. Then and there, I knew my purpose in this world. I would be one of those writers. I would create stories and share them with the world.

My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, I was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father was a lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.
As was expected, he cleared his throat and started to say, “Er... What... What do you really want to do in the gorgeous(灿烂的) future ”
I was silent for a moment playing with the cell phone. I kept thinking, “Should I tell him my true thoughts What if he gets angry What if I let him down ” later I replied, “Well, I want to be a writer.”
I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But surprisingly, “Interesting idea!” he answered. I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation.
“Are you serious, dad ”
“Well, you need confidence and good preparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it’s late. Let’s take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs (螃蟹) for dinner, and we can talk more.”
Early next morning we packed up the equipment and set off for the coast. We didn’t talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.
There were no big waves and blinding sunlight at that time. “Let’s see if we are lucky,” he said, picked up a web basket with a rope tied and threw it into the sea. We waited a while, then my father stood up and said, “Give me a hand with this,” and we pulled up the crab cage onto the deck.
To our joy, the cage was filled with dozens of soft shell crabs. Squatting (蹲) down, we watched them for a moment. At first they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape. Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up, but there were still some crabs trying to escape again and again.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a heart disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.

Paragraph 2:
Linda and I saw each other through the time.

Paragraph 1:
It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game. Sitting in a classroom full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During the day, I was still a busy married woman having loads of housework to do. In the evening, I was a hardworking student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school. I went back again the next semester, and my grades steadily improved.
Paragraph 2:
Linda and I saw each other through the time. When I was down, Linda encouraged me. “Mom, you can't quit now!” And when she was down, I encouraged her. I have to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us. But neither of us gave up. At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished business in my dreams was eventually finished.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Pravina stood patiently, waiting for the performance to begin.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sneha went to the teacher, “I don’t want to take part in the play and I’m leaving.” Her voice was so determined that Pravina wondered why she had such a change in her attitude. “Mum says I can learn more if I take part in a debate,” she looked away, trying to hide her unwillingness. Soon, Pravina made out what really was shouting in Sneha’s deep heart. With a smile on her face, Pravina promised not only could she perform in the play but she would get the chance to join in the debate. She offered a hand to her, saying there happened to be a costume at home which could be lent to her. Excited secretly, she knew she was going to attend the show.
Pravina stood patiently, waiting for the performance to begin. She was waiting for the precious moment when Sneha appeared in the costume she bought for Sneha’s dream. As the light faded out, the lead role came on stage and caught the attention of all the audience. Confident and brave, she vividly brought the character to life. Everyone cheered and applauded when the show ended as Sneha’s first male character turned out a big success. When Sneha was ready to give back the costume to Pravina, she was told to keep it as a reminder of not easily letting go of dreams.

At that moment my father pointed to the cage, “Look at that crab, there!” Staring at the crab, I found that every time he wanted to escape, he was pulled back into the cage. However, he didn't give up his fight. Fortunately, he survived from the struggle eventually. Shocked and amazed, I suddenly understood why my father had suggested catching crabs that morning. I thought the future would be filled with many possibilities. Everyone would need to find out what he enjoyed and held on to it.
From that day on, I was determined to make my dream come true. Besides my devotion to school work, I spent all my spare time making full preparations for becoming a writer. Reading, collecting materials and writing made my life busy but fulfilled, which laid a good foundation for me. Meanwhile, I contributed to literature journals. Gradually, some achievements as a writer increased my confidence. I always think of the crab whenever faced with difficulties. What my father said also encouraged me on my way to success. Now I am grateful for sticking to the thing I truly dreamed of.
