March 14 is a great day for fans of Maths. It is celebrated as Pi(π) Day, a day to celebrate the number that many people know very well. The date copies from the first three numbers ofPi(π). March is the third month and the 14th means one and four. Altogether is 3.14. Pi comes wherever there are circles(圆). Pi has been known for thousands of years and gets its name from a Greek letter, π. The Greeks are believed to be the earliest to use the letter in Maths.
The first Pi Day was celebrated on March 14th, 1988. San Francisco’ s Exploratorium Science Museum started the event. The museum marks the day with a daylong celebration.March 14th is also the birthday of the famous scientist Albert Einstein. Do you know what is Jiaguan(加冠) It's the coming-of-age ceremony of boys in ancient China. According to the ritual system(礼制) of the Zhou Dynasty, Guanli(冠礼) should be held at a man's age of twenty.
Traditional Guanli is usually held in the second month of the lunar calendar. During the ten days before the ceremony, the man should choose a lucky day and tell his relatives and friends the date. And three days before the ceremony, the man's family would choose two distinguished guests(上宾), one to host the ceremony, and the other to help during the ceremony.
At the ceremony, the host(主人)(usually the man's father) and the distinguished guests all wear their full dresses(礼服). They help the man put on three guan: The first is zibuguan(淄布冠), the second is pibian(皮弁), and the third is juebian(爵弁)After putting on each guan, the distinguished guests would make a congratulatory speech(祝辞). The gist of the speech is“You put on the clothes of an adult, please get rid of your boyishness. You should pay attention to your manners and cultivate your virtues. And wish you a long life and good fortune.”
After the ceremony, all the relatives and friends would have a big dinner together. And the host would send the guests to the gate and give them presents like cloth, silk or meat.
