What year were you born in Are you a dragon That is to say, were you born in the Year of the
Dragon
As we know, the Year of the Dragon has arrived with us for a while, and everyone is excited
about talking about dragons. Many of them have noticed that more and more people are using the
word “loong” instead of “dragon” in their daily life. Actually, the loongs in Chinese culture, believe
it or not, are far different from the dragons in Western culture.
First, let’s talk about their origins. Loongs are connected (联系) to stars and rain. They are
believed to have to do with the power of emperors in the past. Dragons, however, are related to
floods and dangerous waters underground.
Second, let’s dig into their stories. Loongs are like messengers between the sky and the earth.
They help out the rulers, who become kings because of them. Dragons, though, are troublemakers.
They fight with the rulers and can even beat them! But as time passes, dragons lose their shine and
heroes start killing them.
Third, let’s look at what they mean. Since loongs represent (代表) power, they are seen as a
symbol of the emperor and an important part of ceremonies and traditions. Dragons, though, are bad
八年级英语试题第 4页 (共 10 页)
news. They are a symbol of evil (恶), and beating the dragons is seen as a victory over evil.
Lastly, let’s check out how they look. Loongs are like a mix of animals, with heads like camels
and necks like snakes. They don’t need wings to fly because they are already skilled at it. Dragons
are more like snakes, living underground and causing problems. They don’t have wings either, but
people add those to make them look more impressive.

A. To make a report. B. To do a survey.

A. Rulers. B. Snakes. C. Loongs. D. Heroes.
34. What can we learn from the passage
A. Loongs have wings. B. Dragons are good news.
C. Loongs are used in ceremonies. D. Dragons’ heads are like camels.
35. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. The origins of dragons and loongs.
B. The stories between dragons and loongs.

Is there a way to quickly remember things just before an exam Walking backward could be a
good idea. Scientists say this activity can help people improve their short-term memory.
Researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video in an experiment (实验). After watching
the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. One group was told to walk 10 meters
forward. The second group walked 10 meters backward. The third group stayed in one place. Then
all three groups were asked 20 questions about what they saw in the video. The scientists found that
the backward-walking group got two more answers right on average than the other two groups.
This shows that the ideas of time and space are important for making memories. When you
walk backward, you look at things from a different view. This difference helps people remember
things that happened before more easily. When you walk backward, you need to look more carefully
at the things around you to avoid (避免) accidents. By doing this, your senses are sharpened (使敏
捷). As a result, you become more attuned to your environment.
And walking backward is not just good for our brains. It’s also good for the rest of our bodies.
Compared with walking forward, walking backward is more challenging. This can help us improve
our fitness because walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories(卡
路里).
八年级英语试题第 5页 (共 10 页)
Walking backward is less stressful for our knees. It could be helpful for people whose knees
often hurt. Walking backward also makes our spines (脊柱) stronger, which can help reduce pain in
the lower back. This might be why many old people like walking backward.
Next time when you want to improve your memory, why not give walking backward a try It’
s as simple as it sounds, but remember to watch where you’re going and who or what you may
knock into.
36. How does the writer start the passage
A. By giving his opinion. B. By asking a question.
B. By telling a story. D. By giving advice.
37. Why does the writer mention the experiment in Paragraph 2
A. To show walking backward can help improve short-term memory.
B. To explain how memories are made in our brains while walking.
C. To point out walking backward can keep us healthy and happy.
D. To call on more people to volunteer in the walking group.
38. The words “become more attuned to” in Paragraph 3 are closest in meaning to ________.
A. become more afraid of B. understand better of
C. feel more lonely about D. get more interested in
39. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Many young people like walking backward.
