《鲁滨逊漂流记》讲述的是一个英国的水手鲁滨逊因船沉了而流落到了无人的荒岛,度过了28年,在进退无路的情况下,他开始想办法自救一一做木筏、造房子、种粮食、养牲畜竭力投入到与大自然的抗争中去。他靠自己的双手,凭着自己的智慧,花了几十年的时间把这个荒岛变成了“世外桃源”,还勇敢地救了一个土著人“星期五”,和他共同生活,就在他快要放弃回到英国的时候,他却得到了离开荒岛的机会,经过重重困难,鲁滨逊最终离开了荒岛…他的乐观和勇气是可嘉的,为了生存做出了常人难以想像的事情。
《爱丽丝梦游仙境》是英国19世纪作家查尔斯·路德维希·道奇森以笔名刘易斯·卡罗尔出版的代表作。故事讲述了一个名叫爱丽丝的小姑娘在睡梦中漫游仙境的奇妙经历。作者根据儿童的心理,描绘出奇幻的梦中世界,看似荒诞,仔细回味则寓意深远,而且对世道人情微讽轻嘲,幽默风趣,表现了作者的独特风格。
《雾都孤儿》是英国19世纪小说家狄更斯的一部动人的社会小说。它通过孤儿奥利佛的遭遇揭示了处于社会底层的人们的哀苦无告的生活画面。奥利佛在济贫院不堪忍受屈辱与饥饿,逃往伦敦,反又陷入贼窟,最后被“有德行的”资本家挽救出来。
《汤姆·索亚历险记》是19世纪美国杰出的幽默讽刺作家马克·吐温具有代表性的小说作品。这是一部以密西西比河上某小镇为背景的读物。故事描写淘气的汤姆和她的伙伴哈克贝里·费恩以及汤姆喜欢的女孩贝姬·撒切尔的许多故事。课本上为了学习方便,把书名简写为Tom Sawyer。
