一、阅读理解
It was nearly time for lights out (熄灯). Earth Hour 2024 was happening at the weekend. The annual (一年一度的) one-hour event began in the UK at 8:30 p.m. on 23rd March, 2024.
Earth Hour happens each year in order to raise awareness of climate change and loss of nature.
The event was founded in 2007 by the WWF (世界自然基金会). It began in Sydney, Australia. It was used as a symbol of an energy-saving event. Over two million people and businesses turned off their lights for an hour. Since then, it has spread all over the world and now millions of people in over 190 countries join in.
If people want to take part in it, the main thing they can do is to turn off their lights for an hour on Saturday night.
However, there are other ways to join in too. The WWF is encouraging people to “Give an Hour for Earth” by doing something positive for the planet. Their ideas include spending an hour in nature and making an outside space more friendly to nature.
On their website, the WWF says, “It is more than just an hour in the dark. It is also a time for thinking carefully about our everlasting effect on the planet and how we can make a change, together.”
As well as getting millions of people to join in, the organizers of Earth Hour are hoping that world leaders will pay attention to it, too and take more action on climate change. Even small actions can make a big difference.

About 80 percent of Earth’s land animals make a home in the forests. Lots of people are working hard to protect forests, and you can, too. Follow these tips to help keep the planet’s forests standing tall.
Light Touch
Don’t take rocks, earth, flowers and leaves from the forest floor—they are an important part of the forest and provide homes for small animals like ants and snakes.
Gum Shoe
Clean the bottom of your shoes before walking in a new place—the seeds (种子) from other places might be under your shoes, which can harm the living areas of some animals and plants.
Trash Trooper
Bring an extra bag along on your walk: you can pick up litter as you go and help keep the forest clean.
Fire Safety
During dry seasons, wildfires can quickly burn down woods and forests. If you go camping, build campfires only in areas allowed, and make sure they’re fully put out before moving on.

Microplastics (微塑料)are so small that we can not see them. But they bring big problems. A new study said that by 2040, microplastic pollution could be twice as bad as it is now. Scientists learned this by looking at 20 years of studies on microplastics.
Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic pieces of plastic. They come from many places. For example, about 600 percent of material made into clothing is plastic. Every time they are washed, they shed (掉落) microplastics. When water bottles and packing bags are left outside, they break down slowly into microplastics.
According to National Geographic, microplastics are usually less than five millimeters(毫米) in size. This small size lets them go everywhere, even in water and air. They don’t break down easily and can stay in the environment for hundreds of years.
This can be bad for our health. Recently, it’s said that scientists found microplastics in people’s brains for the first time. They may hay hurt brain cells(细胞) a and change how the brain works.
Wild animals are also at risk from microplastic pollution. Each year, up to three million tons of microplastics end up in the ocean. Since they are too small to be seen, fish may eat them by mistake and become very sick,
To deal with the problem, scientists’ advice is that we should make and use less plastic. How-ever., it is easier said than done. It requires the efforts of everyone. Only by working together can we protect our environment and have a healthier future for both humans and wildlife.

Thanks to Earth, we have fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy. But it seems that we may think these things are normal and not realize that our planet is getting “sick”.
Among all the environmental problems, climate change sits at the top. Global average (平均的) temperatures have risen by more than 0.5°C since 1992. A half-degree temperature rise is a big thing. It means that heat waves can last around one third longer and rainstorms will be about one third stronger. The increase in sea levels will be much higher, according to NASA. Countries like Singapore that are at low places may be covered by the ocean in the future.
But this is not the only problem people are facing. It’s getting harder to get fresh water. Ocean pollution has become serious. Since 1992, the human population has grown by 2 billion, while the populations of all other animals have fallen by nearly 30 percent.
Scientists say that we are experiencing the sixth huge extinction in history. More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年) if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund. The Amur leopard, black rhino and Cross River gorilla are some animals that are in danger of dying out completely.
However, we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone layer smaller. That’s because we gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone.
This shows that when we make quick and strong decisions, we can make positive changes.
15.What may happen if global average temperatures rise by 0.5°C
A. The ocean will cover China.
B. Cold waves can last a third longer.
C. Sea levels will be three times higher.
D. Rainstorms will be more serious.

二、书面表达
Dear friends,
The environmental problems are getting more and more serious nowadays. As students, we should do something to protect the environment.
First, it’s very important to save water and energy in our daily life. Don’t forget to turn off the lights when we leave the room. Second, we are supposed to reuse the plastic bags when shopping. What’s more, we shouldn’t throw rubbish everywhere. Third, we’d better walk, ride a bike or take the bus when we go out. Last but not least, we need to plant more trees and flowers to make the environment more beautiful.
How important it is for us to protect the environment! If we keep doing these things, I believe we will live a better life. Let’s take action from now on.

Green Lifestyle in Chongqing
As we all know, it is greatly important for us to protect our environment. So we should keep a green lifestyle.
In daily life, I always try my best to achieve a green lifestyle. For example, I usually go out by bike or bus instead of taking a car. I also sort out our rubbish for better recycling. In order to save energy, I often maintain air conditioners twice a year so they will run efficiently. What’s more, I make sure to plant a tree every year.
In my opinion, if everyone lives a green lifestyle and protects our environment actively, our city, Chongqing, will be more beautiful. Let’s have a low carbon life and do it now!
