I believe that if you're the person in your family who held the celebration this past holiday season, you're probably still tired. You may be wondering why you spent so much on presents and why you had to make your house just attractive. Ifyou know what I'm talking about, you're probably your family's designated(指定的)celebrator.
Actually, I'm my family's designated celebrator who sees to it that a holiday really happens in the lives of my loved ones. After this New Year's Day, I was sitting at the breakfast table, tired. My husband looked puzzled and asked, "Why do you do this to yourself every year " I have to admit that part of what I do around the winter holidays seems almost instinctive. It's as if I'm driven by the ancient need to mark the darkness of winter with my little bit of light.
My answer to my husband's question is that I believe one of the most important things I can do while I'm on this planet is to show great respect for those I love through celebrations. The older I get, the more I believe it.
When my children were young, my husband lost his job. It took a decade to recover emotionally and financially. Hot water and electricity were luxuries that weren't always available, and meals were a challenge. I tried to hide it from them, but I was constantly afraid of losing our home. Those celebrations were so scarce and the future was so uncertain.
So now, celebrations mean that much more to me. This year, I polished the silverware and lit the candles. I bought a bottle of wine and some lamb chops just to celebrate this day.
I believe in the importance of celebrations. As my family's designated celebrator, I may not have done all that I set out to do, but I believe that this year,I celebrated with those I love, and I sincerely hope that I celebrated well.

With Earth Day coming up, a new book Birding to Change the World offers reflections on the ways watching birds can renew our joy in nature and even transform our lives. In the book, environmental justice educator Trish O'Kane describes the lessons from birds that have advanced her teaching in Wisconsin.
Author Trish O’Kane is fascinated by American woodcocks(丘鹬),which resemble“a football with wings" and walk awkwardly on land, relying heavily on earthworms(蚯蚓)for food. Their main call is a strange buzzing. Woodcocks are among the 134 bird species inhabiting Warner Park in Madison, Wisconsin. However, every year since the 1990s, on 4 July, the park has hosted a fireworks display called Rhythm and Booms.
At this event, attended by 100,000 people, cannons(大炮)were fired and five tons of 答fireworks exploded. Birds are known to feel panic and even pain from such loud noise; some abandon nests or even die of fright. The park was covered in metal left over from the fireworks.
O’Kane was angry when she heard about the plans to further develop the park beyond its existing sports fields. O'Kane carried out research, cooperated with local nature lovers to form an activist group called Wild Warner, and educated middle school and college students about the park. Tirelessly working together, a team of park lovers brought evidence forward to local authorities about the ongoing harms to the park, highlighting the delightful woodcocks eating the park's earthworms that had poison in them. The authorities listened.Rhythm and Booms was moved out of the park and the damaged areas of the park were restored to their original state.
O'Kane's story is richer than what can be expressed in the words here. It begins in New Orleans at the time of Hurricane Katrina and ends in Vermont, where she teaches today.O'Kane invites us to see the beauty of birds in our world and act for their well-being. We need their voices in this spring's chorus.

C.It increased fireworks costs. D.It destroyed sports facilities.
31.What does O'Kane aim to achieve through her book
A.Inspiring nature conservation. B.Expanding park sports fields.
C.Promoting fireworks festivals. D.Documenting hurricane history.

Creative people are more likely to make the most of their spare time during a typical day by exploring their mind, a new study conducted by University of Arizona researchers suggests. The study, published in the Creativity Research Journal, finds that creative people are more likely to fruitfully use spare time by letting one idea lead to another. Study participants who were more creative felt less bored when they sat alone in a room, researchers found. The researchers divided the study into two parts. For the first experiment, the researchers asked each participant to sit alone in a room for 10 minutes without any access to digital devices. In the absence of any particular prompt(提示),the participants were asked to voice their thoughts aloud in real time. The recorded files from 81 participants were then analyzed.
The researchers assessed the participants' creativity through a divergent(发散的)thinking test, a lab-based verbal test that measures a person's ability to think outside of the box. Participants who performed well in the divergent thinking test had thoughts that flowed freely and were associated with one another, often indicated by phrases such as "this reminds me of" or "speaking of which".The first experiment also found that creative people were more engaged in their thoughts when they were left alone without distractions, such as cell phones or the Internet.
For the second experiment, over 2,600 adults answered questions through a smartphone app developed by Jessica Andrews-Hanna and her graduate student Eric Andrews.Participants who described themselves as creative reported less boredom when they were alone.
"As we become more overworked, overscheduled and addicted to our digital devices,I think we need to do a better job in our homes, our workplaces, and our schools to cultivate (培养)time to simply relax with our thoughts," Jessica said. "Understanding why different people think the way they do may lead to promising interventions to improve health,"she added.
32.What do creative people tend to do in their spare time according to the text
A.Chat with others. B. Take thinking tests.
C.Use digital devices. D.Engage in thinking.
33.How did the researchers assess the participants' creativity in the first experiment
A.By analyzing their recorded thoughts. B.By measuring their boredom level.
C. By testing their verbal skills. D.By observing their behavior carefully.
34.What might Jessica agree with
A.Scheduled work is harmful. B.Overwork promotes creativity.
C.Digital devices boost relaxation. D.Relaxing with thoughts is helpful.
35.Which of the following may be the best title for the text (

)
A.Boredom Is Linked to Lack of Creativity

Known for his diligence(勤奋)and pursuit of perfection, Leo had earned a reputation as one of the most reliable students in high school. It wasn't just achievement he chased-it was perfection, as though a small mistake might ruin the value of everything clse.
When the school launched its annual Green Week, a poster contest was announced to raise awareness of environmental issues. Many students saw it as a chance for fun. For Leo,however, it felt like a test he had to pass. Having followed news about climate change and taken part in online campaigns, he cared deeply about the Earth. But caring wasn't enough-for him, the poster had to be unique, powerful, and perfect.
That very desire became the biggest challenge. As the deadline approached, dozens of drafts piled up on his bedroom floor, which were discarded(被丢弃的),rejected, and unfinished. Each attempt seemed not "good enough". Whether it was a slogan(口号)that felt too common or a drawing that didn't match his vision, Leo erased, restarted, and abandoned every effort. It was not that he lacked ideas. What he lacked was the freedom to let them breathe. Meanwhile, his classmates' posters were going up in the hallway-some neatly colored; others experimental. Creative as they were, Leo could only focus on how much better his work had to be.
The next day was the competition day, but Leo was clueless. So upset was he that he decided to take a walk. As the wind shook the trees and dry leaves danced across the sidewalk,Leo reached the neighborhood park. What met his eyes was not nature's beauty but its mess. Piles of trash lay under a bench: candy wrappers, plastic bottles, and torn paper.Without thinking, Leo bent down and began picking up what he could. It was at that moment, observed by a little girl playing nearby, that something changed."You're helping the Earth,"she said quietly. "If it could talk, it would probably thank you,"she added. It was that one sentence, simple though it was, that stayed with Leo. If the Earth could speak, what would it say
