For the creatively minded, snow represents a large blank canvas (空白画布) for art. But often, it’s limited to snowmen or other snow statues. Simon Beck had a different idea, and over the course of a decade he has carved a path for himself in the snow art world. He creates large land art by walking across soccer-field-sized areas covered in untouched bined with light and shadow, his artistic designs can only be fully appreciated when viewed from above.
Beck, 59, a former map maker turned into a snow artist, thanks to his decision late in life to pursue his hobby.
“It started just as a joke one day really,” Beck explained. “After skiing one day, I decided to make a drawing on snow to seek pleasure…”
“I really had no idea how good it would look when I made that first drawing, but it really went beyond my expectation,” he said of his first ever creation that he looked down on from a ski lift.
To create this work, Beck stepped his way through the snow using only snowshoes and a ski pole for measurement with nothing else but the image of a design idea in his head. It was not challenging at all due to his previous work experience. But as his designs developed and became more complex, Beck said he began to start drawing them on paper first.
Beck’s paintings have become a huge hit since his work was first shared.
“Most of the time I had been doing failed careers, and people around me are asking what’s the quickest way of getting rid of this person,” Beck said. “And for the first time, I felt people actually wanted me. I felt like a more valued member of society”

A. To have fun. B. To prove his talent.
C. To entertain the skiers. D. To develop a new hobby.

It looks like a pile of stones at first sight. Yet beneath lies the Knowe of Swandro, an archaeological (考古的) site on the island off the north coast of Scotland, containing the remains from the Iron Age. Every summer archaeologists head to investigate, but time is against them. Coastal erosion (侵蚀) from rising sea levels and frequent storms has destroyed most of the Knowe’s most valuable part, with its final third likely to disappear within the next few years.
UNESCO, the cultural arm of the United Nations, estimates that one in six cultural heritage (遗产) sites faces similar threats from climate change. However, preserving archaeological sites is understandably low on climate policymakers’ agendas. Only in 2020 did the International Council on Monuments and Sites declare a climate emergency. Funding remains a major barrier, as archaeology is typically financed by land developers, yet no comparable funding stream exists for threats driven by climate change.
Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. Changing climates and rising temperatures have unexpectedly led to new discoveries. Severe droughts have exposed ancient rock carvings in the Amazon, and a storm in 1850 uncovered Skara Brae, a Neolithic site in Scotland, which had long been buried beneath sandbanks.
Archaeologists and heritage institutions must answer two pressing questions: “Which sites should be saved, and which could be abandoned ” In poor countries, paying for preservation can be hard to justify. With limited resources and so many sites at risk, many will unavoidably be lost, along with their historical significance and tourism potential.
“Communities must come to terms with changing landscapes and adapt accordingly,” says Mairi Davies of Historic Environment Scotland, an organization focused on preservation. Sites like Swandro are turning to technologies to create a digital record for future generations. “It’s time to discuss what we value and prepare for unavoidable losses.” Davies adds.
8. What’s the function of Paragraph 1
A. To explain a concept. B. To inform the latest disaster.
C. To lead into the topic. D. To introduce a famous archaeologist.
9. What is the major problem facing the Knowe of Swandro
A. Inaccessible location for outsiders.
B. Environmental damage threatening the site.
C. Shortage of qualified archaeologists.
D. Insufficient archaeological discoveries at the site.
10. What makes it difficult to protect cultural sites like Swandro
A. Lack of support from local government.
B. Strong competition among land developers.
C. Low public awareness of their historical significance.
D. Limited financial resources for climate-related threats.
11. What is Mairi Davies’ suggestion for facing heritage loss
A. Digitally documenting sites at risk.
B. Establishing laws for cultural relics.
C. Continuously seeking institution support.
D. Preserving all sites at any cost.

To get treats, apes (猿) eagerly pointed them out to humans who didn’t know where they were, a seemingly simple experiment that demonstrated for the first time that apes will communicate unknown information in the name of teamwork. The study also provides the clearest evidence to date that apes have natural ability to detect another’s ignorance, an ability thought to be uniquely human.
“The ability to intuit gaps in one another’s knowledge is at the heart of our most complex social behaviors,” said co-author Chris Krupenye. “Because this so-called theory of mind supports many of the capacities that make humans unique, like teaching and language, many believe it is absent from animals. But this work demonstrates the rich mental foundations that humans and other apes share.”
Krupenye and co-author Luke Townrow worked with three male bonobos (倭黑猩猩). During the experiment, one of the bonobos would sit with Townrow, facing each other across a table. The bonobo would watch as a second person placed a treat, a grape or a cake, under one of three cups. Sometimes Townrow could see where the treat was going, sometimes he couldn’t. The bonobo could have the treat if Townrow could find it.
Whether or not Townrow saw where the treat was hidden, he’d say, “Where’s the grape ” and then wait 10 seconds. If he’d seen the treat being hidden, during the 10 seconds the ape would usually sit still and wait for the treat. Otherwise, the ape would quickly point to the right cup.
“We predicted that if apes are really tracking ignorance, when their partners lacked knowledge they would be pointing more often and more quickly and that's exactly what they did,” Krupenye said.
The team was excited to further confirm apes’ mental complexity.
“There are debates in the field about the capabilities of primates and for us it was exciting to confirm that they really do have these rich capacities that some people have denied them,” Krupenye said.
Next the team will work to more deeply explore the apes’ motivations and how they think about other individuals’ minds.
12. What does the underlined word “intuit” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Narrow. B. Sense. C. Employ. D. Leave.
13. When did the ape point to the cup in the experiment
A. When the ape saw the cup. B. When the ape was thirsty.
C. When the ape wanted to eat. D. When Townrow didn’t see the treat.
14. What will the researchers do next
A. Further confirm apes’ complex mind. B. Go on exploring apes’ learning ability.
C. Carry out debates about apes’ capabilities. D. Do more experiments to prove the finding.
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. Can’t See Clearly — Apes Can B. Don’t Cooperate — Treat Works
C. Don’t Know Something — Apes Can Tell D. Can’t Speak — Apes Can Make a Gesture

In a small town located in the mountains, there was a young boy named Owen. He was crazy about basketball more than anything else in the world. He would spend hours every day practicing his dribbling (运球), shooting and passing. He dreamed of one day winning games on a team.
Owen’s town had a small basketball court that was often empty. Owen would go there every day after school to practice. One day, as he was shooting hoops (投篮), he heard a voice behind him, “Hey, kid! You’re pretty good!”
Owen turned around to see a tall man with a friendly smile. The man introduced himself as Coach Johnson and asked Owen if he wanted to join his basketball team. The team was made up of kids from all over the town, and they practiced every day after school.
Owen was overjoyed because he had never played on a team before. He wanted to start and win games. Owen quickly became the star player of the team.
However, the team never won a game. “I had trained so hard and performed excellently, but we were always losing! Jack should have run much faster towards me and Kris should have passed the ball to me!” Owen kept complaining to the coach.
The complaint seemed understandable! Owen was admired by his teammates because he was fast and had incredible shots. However, Johnson knew Owen lacked something important. He told Owen to learn to play with his teammates as a team instead of just focusing on himself. Owen didn’t quite understand that at first and insisted he just needed to practice harder to win games.
However, disaster struck. Owen injured his ankle one day and had to sit out for several weeks, which let him fall into anxiety. He felt his dream was slipping away.
During his recovery at home, Owen refused to see anyone on the team, except his coach. Johnson handed Owen a phone downloaded with some videos about the best basketball teams and some cards from Owen’s teammates.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Owen couldn’t wait to watch those videos.

47. One possible version:
Owen couldn’t wait to watch those videos. He watched them over and over again, noticing that the players weren’t just good at shooting and dribbling, but also had incredible cooperative spirit. Owen realized that he had been so focused on his own success that he had forgotten about the importance of teamwork. As he thought of his teammates, he saw the words “We are a team!” written on each of the card. He decided to become a better teammate.
After recovering, Owen returned to his team as a changed player. He passed the ball more, encouraged his teammates and worked hard to help improve their skills. Johnson was relieved to see self-centered Owen had got what he had been lacking in. Those diligent kids played as a strong team and they started winning games. To Owen’s delight, his dream finally came true. More importantly, Owen learned that basketball was more about working together as a team.
