Story l
In America in 1940, the twin boys went to live with two different families almost as soon as they were born.
The two brothers never saw each other again until 1979, when they met by chance at a party. When they started
talking to each other, they discovered some amazing similarities (相似处). First, they found out that they both
enjoyed making things out of wood. Later on, they discovered that they had both married women called Linda, and
that they both had one son whose first and middle names were James and Alan. Besides, both brothers had called
their dogs by the same name—Toy. As if that wasn’t enough, they also found out that they both took their family
holiday at the same place every year.
Story 2
In 1996, a Filipino woman called Mrs. Jimena told other people that her three children could breathe
underwater like fish. Mrs. Jimena said that her children had three small holes on the sides of their necks below each
ear, and that these were like the gills (鳃) on fish. Mrs. Jimena said that she didn’t know how to swim and that her
children were just starting to learn. Her family lives in a mountain village far from the sea. According to Mrs.

but none of them could find out what was wrong with her. Vicky became very upset, and soon stopped reading and
writing altogether. Instead she started watching TV all the time. On 27th, September 1995 Vicky was watching her
favourite football team, Manchester United, play on television. When the team scored a goal, she became so

You’ve probably noticed something about the car industry over the last few years. Or rather, the lack of
something. Buttons (按钮) have disappeared from many cars. Touch screens have taken over instead. From turning
on the wipers (雨刮器) to turning down the heat, all you do is tap a screen.
Touch screens are very common in new cars. According to a recent survey, nearly all (97 percent) of new
cars coming onto the market after 2023 have at least one touch screen. About 25 percent of U.S. cars on the road
have a screen at least 11 inches long.
There are many reasons for carmakers’ preference for touch screens. For one thing, they can save
production time by putting as few wires (电线) as possible through the car. Locating most functions through a
touch screen also allows them to update functions over the air. With such screens, carmakers could even make
money from advertising.
But using the screen while driving requires eyes off the road and that can be very dangerous. Looking away
from the road for two or more seconds doubles the possibility of an accident. According to a 2017 study, drivers
were distracted (使分心) for about 40 seconds when using touch screens. U.S. traffic authorities said 8 percent of
all U.S. traffic deaths in 2021 resulted from distracted drivers.
Euro NCAP provides the public with information on the safety of new cars. It tests cars and gives them
safety ratings (等级) in a five-star system. This March, the government published new testing rules. Under the new
rules, a car won’t get top scores unless certain basic functions have their own buttons. The new rules will go into
effect in 2026.
Euro NCAP doesn’t have the right to force carmakers to use buttons. But it will give no more than four stars to
cars that depend too much on touch screens. Will that help stop a complete move away from buttons in cars We
have yet to find out.
16.How did the writer describe the use of the screens in new cars
A. By sharing experiences. B. By telling stories.
C. By asking questions. D. By listing numbers.
17.How many reasons for carmakers’ preference for touch screens are mentioned
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
18.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text
A. Buttons will completely disappear by 2026.
B. Carmakers may keep some buttons to meet safety standards.
C. Euro NCAP will force all carmakers to use buttons.
D. Drivers will refuse to buy cars without touch screens.
19.What is the text mainly about
A. The cost of car touch screens.
B. Touch screens in cars and their safety problems.
C. How to use car buttons correctly.
D. The best car models with big screens.
20.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the future use of buttons in cars
A. Positive. B. Worried. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive.

根据“hitting the four young wolves and sending

32.

fight with 与……打架;escape from 从……逃跑;stare at 盯着;step on 踩在……上。根据“as if to say, ‘What

they 它们;it 它;he 他;she 她。根据“Then, one by one, … all turn to look at me.”

as 当……时候;when 当…… 根据“I’ve been watching these seven
根据“I traveled here to join a documentary film team”以

Jimena, the holes in her children’s necks become larger when they are underwater, allowing them to stay
underwater for up to six minutes.
