On a full-moon night in 1988, a young park keeper named Bruce Barnes paddled a boat into the wetlands of Louisiana’s Barataria Preserve (保护区). It was 2 a.m. when he pulled out his instrument and played it attentively. First, Barnes recalled, the frogs joined in. Then the turtles approached. Several of them stayed at the boat’s edge as he sang for them during
the next two hours.
高一英语试卷 第 4页(共 12 页)
Barnes, now 61, is known today as a musician. He is also a naturalist who spends most of his career working for the National Park Service. His early interest in the natural world led him to major in biology at Henderson State University and to start working at national parks as an undergraduate. He arrived at Barataria in 1987 when he was 23. Barnes surveyed the park’s plants and animals and led daytime boat trips. Hours after sunset, he returned to the water by himself.
For Barnes, music and nature don’t inhabit separately. Louisiana’s rhythms, he says, are as place-specific as its wetlands and forests. The wetlands even produce their own music. Barnes has visited Barataria at night with a sound engineer, capturing wildlife sounds to weave into his recordings.
Barnes retired from the National Park Service in 2015. He still plays music full time, and he remains a naturalist, leading walking tours and photographing medicinal plants. Some of those photographs are currently on display in New Orleans.
Plants and music, to Barnes, all have magic power. In his chosen home, they are never far from each other. “When you roll into New Orleans, you can hear some of the world’s greatest music,” he says. “And you can get in your car and drive 25 minutes and be in the wetlands, completely enveloped by nature and water, and feel like you’re 1,000 miles from civilization.”

C. Barnes’ passion for nature and music. D. The role of music in Barnes’ life.

Sometimes, what my seven-year-old tabby cat Ophelia wants is obvious. Crying in front of her empty food bowl at dinner time clearly indicates she’s at risk of starvation. Other times, though, her meows are a complete and total mystery.
That’s where Sergei Dreizin and Mark Boyes, computer scientists at Akvelon, a software engineering company based in Bellevue, Washington, say they can help. They are the brains behind the MeowTalk app, which aims to “give cat owners the best tools available” for interpreting their pet’s needs.
高一英语试卷 第 5页(共 12 页)
When Boyes and Dreizin were looking for data to inform their new app, they came across 2019 research that revealed cat meows contain shared characteristics. The study authors then built a computer program to analyze audio recordings of 21 adult cats meowing.
The MeowTalk founders used these audio recordings of tens of thousands of meows to develop their computer models, which is fueled by AI. And it worked. 2021 study found MeowTalk can classify nine feline (猫科的) phrases with 90 percent accuracy.
The free app records your feline’s meows and translates them into a small range of phrases, like “I’m annoyed.” and “Feed me!” Users can rate the accuracy of the translations, which further improves the computer model. Launched in 2020, the app has been downloaded over 20 million times, and Dreizin estimates the program has analyzed over a billion meows to date. “We’re the largest collectors of meows in this galaxy,” he jokes.
The app is part of an expanding suite of technologies designed to help us communicate with our furry friends. Another is FluentPet, which trains your pet to press buttons to communicate a need; for instance, a cat can learn to press a button that says the word “play” .
Cat behaviorist and communication expert Charlotte de Mouzon isn’t convinced of these products’ accuracy, but strengthening your relationship with your cat is always a wise goal. “If people play with the app, maybe they will become more attentive to their cats,” she says. 38. How can computer scientists at Akvelon help cat owners
A. By making cats’ needs fulfilled.
B. By getting cats rid of starvation.
C. By filling the empty food bowls.
D. By solving the mysteries of cats’ meows. 39. What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A. Users consider the app very practical.
B. Users can help promote the app.
C. Dreizin thinks the app is the most accurate.
D. The program has analyzed billions of meows.
40. What’s Charlotte’s attitude to this kind of apps
A. Doubtful. B. Conservative. C. Intolerant. D. Disapproving. 41. Which of the following can be implied from the text
A. MeowTalk app is mainly driven by the curiosity of computer scientists.
B. MeowTalk app indicates a trend towards more intelligent pet-related technology. C. Technology will completely change the way cat owners interact with their pets. D. High-tech products are of little use in solving the real problems of cat owners.

You might not think that an AI capable of making music would stimulate your emotion,
but others think differently, particularly those who gathered at Mexico City’s Symphony Hall
高一英语试卷 第 6页(共 12 页)
in 2019 for Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, which I finished using melodies generated by an AI.
As the orchestra finished Schubert’s original work and began the music the AI and I had written, I could feel the crowd’s energy shift from astonishment to indignation (愤慨) and fear. They seemed afraid that an AI might be able to make emotional symphonic music. You can see their point: an AI that makes emotional music could affect the emotional lives of thousands or even millions of people in a small, but profound way, just like a human musician does.
Positive and negative, people reacted very strongly to AI’s symphonic debut (首 秀 ). Even though most people don’t believe that AI can create something enjoyable, they, at least partly, did enjoy the Unfinished Symphony.
Enjoyment in music implies that there’s something in the music that the listener connects
to, an awareness of shared emotion. But, in the case of AI music, an emotion shared with who AI, as of yet, has no emotions. So what is the meaning of music made without an emotional composer The unsatisfying answer is that music has no objective meaning. A composer can decide how a piece of music sounds, but it’s the listener that decides what it means.
No matter how it’s created, music doesn’t exist in a vacuum (真空) to the listener. The meaning we assign to music depends on its context—how the piece connects to other elements in our lives. Without context, music is like the results of a game whose rules have been lost. The context for a music is part of who you are. The music is emotional to you because you have the context to appreciate it. As it continues to evolve, AI music will develop its own context. Certainly, it’ll be different from human-made music. It’ll mix existing genres to create new ones; it’ll combine instruments that we wouldn’t think of combining. Its rules will be different.
I’m now always asked the same question: “Who put the emotion in that music: you, the composer, or the AI ” But that’s not the question they really want to ask, though. There’s a deeper question that most people are too afraid to ask right now: “Are my emotions so simple that they can be maneuvered by a machine ”
In my experience, this could be possible one day. If a modestly capable music AI in 2019 could stir up emotions of an audience, maybe AI can have a more powerful effect on our emotional lives than we’d like to admit.
42. The audience reacted strongly to the symphony mainly due to .
A. their doubts about AI’s capabilities B. their uneasiness about AI’s influence
C. the orchestra’s brilliant performance D. the likeness between two pieces of music 43. What might the author agree with
A. AI poses little impact on people’s emotions.
B. Music’s emotional core lies more with its audience than its creator. 高一英语试卷 第 7页(共 12 页)
C. AI music will outperform human-made music.
D. The context is determined by people’s interpretation of music.
44. What does the word “maneuvered” underlined in Paragraph 6 most probably mean
A. Refreshed. B. Challenged. C. Revealed. D. Directed.
45. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. Are Composers To Be Replaced B. Would AI Music Be A Rising Trend
C. Could AI Make Music That Moves You D. Was Unfinished Symphony A Success

Modern libraries need digitally informed librarians
In today’s university culture, librarians are of great importance to ensuring students have a solid understanding of the digital resources they are using for academic work. 49 . A Story of Humility: Kong Rong Giving Up the Bigger Pear
Kong Rong, a young boy in ancient China, was known for his humility. One day, his family received a
plate of pears. Instead of choosing the largest one, Kong Rong picked the smallest pear for himself, leaving
the bigger ones for his brothers. When asked why, he replied, “I am younger, so I should take the smaller one.”
This story teaches us the importance of humility and selflessness. Kong Rong’s actions reflect his respect for others and his willingness to put others’ needs before his own. It reminds us that even small acts of kindness can demonstrate great moral character.
From this story, I learn that true virtue lies in our daily choices. It inspires me to be more considerate and generous in my interactions with others, showing that humility is a timeless value worth practicing. Just like a gentle breeze that softens the hardest edges, humility brings warmth and harmony to our relationships, creating a world where kindness flourishes and understanding prevails.(词数:165 )

This story inspires me to face challenges with courage and determination. It teaches me that hard work and perseverance are essential for achieving long-term goals, and that we should never give up in the face of adversity. As Victor Hugo once said, “People do not lack strength; they lack will.”(词数:146 )
A Story of Loyalty: The Legend of Yue Fei’s Tattoo
The story of Yue Fei tells of a famous general in the Song Dynasty who was deeply loyal to his country. His mother tattooed the words “Serve the Country with Utmost Loyalty” on his back to remind him of his duty. Throughout his life, Yue Fei fought bravely against invaders and remained steadfast in his loyalty, even when falsely accused and imprisoned.
This inspiring story emphasizes the value of loyalty and patriotism. Yue Fei’s unwavering dedication to his country, even in the face of injustice, serves as a powerful example of selflessness and integrity. It highlights that true loyalty requires courage and sacrifice.
The story serves as a reminder that loyalty is not limited to one’s country but also applies to family, friends, and personal principles. What strikes me most about this story is how loyalty, as a guiding principle,
should influence our actions even when confronted with difficulties.(词数: 148 )

Hey, everyone. I'm really excited to be here to share my experiences since graduation. When I was leaving here about 10 years ago, I decided to go to college, which, when I think about it, is a little strange, because I come from a family where no one had ever gone to college. Everything I knew about college came from the movies. Once in college, I got a classic case of too much fun and too little class time. At the end of my second year, my major professor warned me, you're never going to graduate unless something big changes. But it wasn't until I entered my graduate program in conservation ecology that I felt I was on the right path. My conservation work has brought me joy, excitement, and adventure. I've done some research in the remote mountains of California. I've had dinners with important politicians. I've even stepped over snakes in Africa. But most important of all, it gave me something bigger than myself to fight for. When I look back, I feel fortunate to have chosen college, and particularly science, through which I have rediscovered myself and achieved liberation. And I'm sure you all can do the same.
