Several years on, China’s traditional health craze is showing no sign of slowing down. While jujube ice cream and herbal bubble teas have each had their 15 minutes of fame, now a bar in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu thinks it’s found the next viral trend: traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) drinks.
Priced around 50 yuan per glass, the drinks on offer at the newly opened Chill Spot claim a wide range of effects, from weight loss to nourishing (滋养) a person’s blood. Chill Spot’s owner Liu says he consulted a local TCM doctor for the recipes and sourced the required materials from a TCM specialty medicine store, soaking (浸泡) them for over three months. “I talked to TCM doctors, and they said mixing traditional Chinese medicine with other drinks is not a problem,” Liu added.
Liu isn’t the first bar owner to capitalize on a growing interest in healthy lifestyles, or yangsheng, among young Chinese. TCM-themed establishments have popped up nationwide in recent years. Some bars, like Liu’s, offer TCM drinks like “Boss’ Chicken Soup” — featuring angelica (白芷) root, ginseng, and ginger.
But TCM experts caution some yangsheng offerings may overpromise and underdeliver. They can also land their creators in legal trouble: China’s Food Safety Law also specifies that only medicinal substances that are traditionally both eaten and used in Chinese medicines can be added to food. Wu Meiling, a lawyer warned that bars that use unapproved ingredients can face fines, the cancellation of their licenses, or even criminal responsibility.
Liu told Cover News that his drinks aim to promote health, not treat diseases. He stressed the importance of blending traditional Chinese medicine with modern lifestyles. “We want to show that traditional wisdom can enhance contemporary living in a way that is both enjoyable and beneficial,” he said. “It’s about balance and well-being, not just pleasure.”
4. What can be inferred about the drinks at Chill Spot
A. They are officially priced. B. They are said to meet health needs.
C. Their ingredients are used directly. D. Their materials are from a local doctor.
5. What does the phrase “capitalize on” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A Take advantage of. B. Have access to.
C. Withdraw money from. D. Gain insights into.
6. Why does the author mention TCM experts and the lawyer
A. To explain the science behind TCM. B. To offer health advice to consumers.
C. To warn of the legal risks of TCM drinks. D. To promote traditional Chinese medicine.
7. What message does Liu want to convey in the last paragraph
A. His drinks enjoy great popularity. B. His drinks prevent and cure illness.
C. TCM reflects the Chinese wisdom. D. TCM boosts the quality of modern life.

Forget to bring your charger with you on vacation What if your clothing could generate electricity from the heat your body naturally produces This futuristic concept is now approaching reality thanks to scientists at Chalmers University of Technology and Link ping University.
Researchers say the remarkable new textile (纺织) technology turns body heat into electricity through thermoelectric (热电的) effects, potentially powering wearable devices from your clothing. The innovation centers on a newly developed polymer (聚合物) called poly. “The polymers that we use are bendable, lightweight and are easy to use in both liquid and solid form. They are also non-poisonous, ” says study first author Mariavittoria Craighero.
Unlike previous attempts at creating thermoelectric textiles, this breakthrough addresses a critical barrier that has long held back progress: the lack of air-stable n-type (negative) polymers. “We found the missing piece of the puzzle to make a better thread — a type of polymer that had recently been discovered. It has outstanding performance stability in contact with air, while at the same time having a very good ability to conduct electricity. By using polymers, we don’t need any rare earth metals, which are common in electronics, ” explains Craighero.
Thermoelectric generators work by turning temperature differences into electrical energy. When one side of a thermoelectric material is warmer than the other, electrons move from the hot side to the cold side, generating an electrical current. The human body continuously generates heat, creating natural temperature differentials between the skin and the surrounding environment.
For efficient thermoelectric generation, both p-type (positive) and n-type materials must work together. While p-type materials have been well-established in previous research, creating stable n-type materials has been a persistent challenge. Most n-type organic materials degrade (降解) rapidly when exposed to oxygen in the air, often becoming ineffective within days.
What makes this development particularly exciting is the remarkable stability of poly-coated silk. Unlike similar materials that degrade within days when exposed to air, these new thermoelectric threads maintain their performance for over 14 months under normal conditions without any protective coating.
8. Which of the following best describes poly
A. Safe and conductive. B. Recyclable and flexible.
C. Adaptable and metal-free. D. Stable and liquid-proof.
9. What is the correct order of thermoelectric generators’ working procedures
a. The body produces heat. b. Electrons move from the hot side to the cold.
c. Electrical current is generated. d. Temperature differences are created.
A. d-c-a-b. B. d-a-c-b. C. a-b-c-d. D. a-d-b-c.
10. What makes efficient thermoelectric generation possible
A. The development of durable n-type materials. B. The discovery of time-tested p-type materials.
C. The breakdown of disposable n-type materials. D. The removal of organic protective coating.
11. Which is the best title of the text
A. Smart Devices: From Dream to Reality B. Eco-Friendly Materials: A Textile Revolution
C. Body Heat Powers Devices: Wearable Charger D. No Rare Metals Needed: Clothing Breakthrough
D
Scientists have long known domesticated animals tend to share qualities like floppy ears, smaller brains and decreased aggression. Now, researchers have discovered that humans may have influenced another quality in dogs: the color of their eyes. When domesticating four-legged companions, humans have selected dogs with darker eyes because we view them as more friendly and youthful.
A team of researchers in Japan analyzed irises (虹膜) in photos of 22 gray wolves and 81domestic dogs of 35 major breeds (品种). In their study, they report that domestic dogs tend to have significantly darker and redder irises than their yellow-eyed wolf cousins. “Not only is there a clear eye color difference between wolves and dogs, but we also find that dogs with darker eyes are perceived as more friendly and immature by humans,” said lead author Akitsugu Konno, an animal scientist in Japan. “This finding suggests that humans may unconsciously select for dark eyes because they seem less threatening. ”
To test this, the researchers picked 12 images of dogs, photoshopped their eyes and created a questionnaire. They asked 70 participants to rate the dogs’ personality qualities (such as friendliness, trustworthiness and aggression) on a scale of zero to five. Their results showed participants rated dark-eyed dogs as more friendly and less mature than light-eyed dogs.
“We think that a darker iris makes it more difficult to distinguish the size of the pupil (瞳孔) and thus gives the illusion (错觉) of a large pupil, which is associated with our perception of being more infant-like,” said Konno. Human pupil size tends to decrease with age, therefore, we may associate large pupils with young creatures that require our care.
Jessica Hekman, a vet and dog geneticist said that it appears convincing that humans selected for dark eyes. However, she adds, it remains unclear whether our pups were originally domesticated that way, or if the selection is a recent breeder-driven trend. Further research will be needed to determine exactly when the eye color change occurred.
12. How did the researchers carry out the study according to paragraph 2
A. By providing examples. B. By observing reactions.
C. By making comparisons. D. By monitoring changes.
13. The researchers created the questionnaire to ________.
A. test the reasons for human selection B. find the link between humans and dogs
C. know dogs’ appearance and intelligence D. rate the dogs’ personality qualities
14. Which figure best illustrates people’s perception of dogs
A. B.
C. D.
15. What is Jessica Hekman’s attitude towards the study
A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Dismissive. D. Cautious.

School was out! I grabbed my backpack and headed to the library for my favorite after-school activity: Writing Club. Miss Lisa, our writing club leader asked us to share stories with a critique partner, who was to give helpful feedback so as to make the best story. My critique partner was Penny. We sat at a table and pushed our stories toward each other. I was nervous. I had no problem coming up with great story ideas but did have problems with spelling, grammar and punctuation. Penny was worried, but why She always got perfect scores on her spelling and grammar tests.
I read her story without stopping. It was about a dog named Sunny who found a home after saving a family from the flooding river. I loved it. “Wow, great story,” I told her. “I don’t have any suggestions. It’s perfect!” “Yours too,” she mumbled. She didn’t even look at me as she passed mine back. When Miss Lisa announced the end of the class, Penny looked relieved. She jumped up and grabbed her backpack. Everything fell out. She put her stuff back in carelessly and hurried out of the library. I noticed a book under the table. It must have fallen out of Penny’s bag. The title was Sunny the Brave. That sounded familiar. I read the description on the back. It was just like Penny’s story! It was longer, with some different words, but the plot was exactly the same. I couldn’t believe it. Penny had copied this idea!
On my way home, I kept thinking about telling it to Miss Lisa. As I got home, I found my Mom and Dad were in the kitchen making dinner. Dad chopped vegetables into perfect shapes. Mom stirred a sauce on the stove. I realized that Mom and Dad had different skills, making them a great creative team. With Dad’s attention to detail and Mom’s sense of adventure, their dinners turned out delicious. That gave me a better idea.

A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Dismissive. D. Cautious.

【答案】范文
My Preference for the Study Tour
Among the two options for the study tour, I would choose the Space Science Museum without hesitation.
First of all, the museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the mysteries of the universe, which can greatly arouse our curiosity about science and technology. Moreover, it’s the interactive exhibitions there that allow us to experience space missions first-hand. Meanwhile, by learning about spacecrafts, satellite systems and China’s remarkable achievements in space, we can connect our understanding of physics and astronomy with practical life skills.
I firmly believe that not only will this choice broaden our horizons but it will also inspire us to have a greater passion for innovation and exploration.

【答案】范文
At school the next morning, I walked over to Penny, held out the book and said, “You dropped this.” Penny took the book from my hand, her eyes wide with surprise and a hint of fear. She sniffed and wiped her nose on her sleeve. She was crying! “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “It was wrong of me to copy the story but I never had a single idea for a story and just wanted to write something good.” Seeing the tears welling up in her eyes, I told her that my job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not to make her feel bad. So I proposed that we co-write a new story, just like how my parents worked together in the kitchen.
Penny and I decided to write a new story together. We sat down at a table and started brainstorming. Finally, we locked in a story about a magical forest. She helped me with my spelling and grammar, while I helped her come up with more creative plot bining our strengths, we made a great creative team. By the end of the day, we had a fantastic story that was truly ours. We both felt proud and relieved. Miss Lisa was impressed with our teamwork and our new story.
