During work hours, among the sounds of machines, the kitchen of Bach’s Bakery (面包房) is especially tidy and quiet, not because of any rules against talking during work hours, but because all of the workers have a hearing disability. They are hard-working and professional in their work, and use sign language to communicate with each other from time to time.
Bach’s Bakery lies in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It is run by a German couple, Uwe Brutzer and his wife Dorothee Brutzer, who started it up ten years ago with the purpose of creating more jobs for those disabled in the neighborhood. So far, Bach’s Bakery has trained around 30 hearing disabled people. While some skilled workers found jobs in other bakeries and hotels and have been able to live on their own, several of them have stayed to work at the bakery after they completed the training.
The Brutzers’ work has won the support of many people in China. With the spread of news about the bakery, many Internet users learned about Bach’s Bakery and its inspiring story. As a result, many local people in Changsha as well as visitors from other parts of the country come to buy their products, Uwe said that public attention has encouraged them a lot and helped grow the bakery’s business, resulting in workers getting higher pay. However, what he values more is that, through media reports, more people have come to understand that disabled people can work as well as other people when they are given chances.
Now, as they are preparing to return to Germany, they have found a German couple teaching in China as the new managers, and handed over the bakery to a public welfare (福利) organization. Julia lived with a German shepherd dog in a small flat in the city. The dog’s name is Lucy.
One day, Julia saw a news story about volunteers with search-and-rescue dogs. From the news story, Julia learned how search-and-rescue dogs are different. They are always energetic and they work hard for a reward, like a toy or a bone. For search-and-rescue dogs, looking for lost people was like playing a game. From what she learned, Julia thought Lucy seemed like a natural search-and-rescue dog. Soon Julia and Lucy began to train with other dog trainers and their search-and-rescue dogs. If Lucy succeeded in finding the thing, it received a special toy. Julia also trained herself, like running, biking and climbing. So she would be strong enough to keep up with Lucy.
Their first rescue call came in the middle of the night. Three college students went hiking in a far-away forest. But they didn’t go back home. The woods were filled with all kinds of dangers. At the camp, Julia met up with her team and got her task. In the early morning of the next day, she took Lucy down a road. Lucy ran ahead, smelling with her nose in the air. Filled with anxiety and concern for the safety of the students, Julia called out their names. She and Lucy spent hours along the footprints which were helpful. Although another team found the hikers finally, Julia was proud of Lucy and herself.
Julia and Lucy’s next chance to help came soon. An earthquake shook a city. Julia once lived in the city. Many people were missing or hurt. Lucy and Julia and other trained volunteers searched for the wounded in the city. They hoped to rescue them as quickly as they could. Using her nose as a guide, Lucy led the workers to people who were trapped (困住) in the falling buildings.
