The population of the world continues to increase, but in some areas the population is falling. This is true in Europe and especially in Eastern Europe. In Russia, the population is going down by about 100people EVERY HOUR! Russia's population could fall by ONE THIRD by the year 2050! And in Poland(波兰)the population is also going down because people are leaving to work in other countries.
One of the main reasons is a change of lifestyle. All over Europe, people, especially educated women, have a different attitude(态度) to children from their parents. “I have one child and she is enough for me,” said Galina Tereschkova, a doctor from Moscow. “My husband and I both work full-time. We can't imagine having more than one child.”Many women decide to have children later in life or not to have children at all.“I don't want to have any children until I have worked for at least 10 years,” said a 19-year-old student Hana Markova from Prague. Her opinion is typical of 18~24-year-old women everywhere in Europe.
How many children does Galina Tereschkova want to have
.
一、细节理解题
一般来说,阅读表达的前几道都属于细节题,能从文中直接找到答案,做题步骤如下:
Step 1 画出问题中的关键词——疑问词、人物、事件等重要信息;
Step 2 使用关键词到文中定位,找到对应句,画出来;
Step 3 根据问题疑问词和人称,转换对应句——人称转换;谓语动词调整;句首单词首字
母大写等。
“关键信息定位+转换”法
Working Out through Online Videos
Physical exercise is good for our mind, body and spirit. Today, working out through online videos is becoming very popular.(题1)Since the Internet is widely used, it’s very easy for us to do so. That means we can work out anytime anywhere.
Which way to work out is becoming very popular today
.
... Another friend of mine, Michael, told me that workout videos let him feel so comfortable.“I have a fear of working out at the gym(健身房), because I don’t like being watched by others(题2 ). Working out at home makes working out much more enjoyable,” he said.
2.Why does Michael dislike working out at the gym
.
“Without being with someone in person, you will be less willing(愿意的)to work out to your best(题3). Working out at the gym allows you to have advice in real time and get pushed harder,” my sister said to me. “Well, if you really want to have a try, first, choose proper programs or videos. That’s very important. And then ask your friends for advice. Their experiences can give you a good insight into what you can expect.Anyway, don’t be addicted(沉迷的) to it. You should try different ways to work out to be healthy.”
3.What is the problem of working out without someone else in person
.
What does Hana Markova want to do before she has children
__________________________________________________
Step 1 认真审题,画出关键词。
Step 2 表达自己的观点。看清问题是一般疑问句还是特殊疑问句(1分)。
一般疑问句:Would you like to.../Do you think.../Do you agree.../Are you going to...?
(回答Yes/No.)
特殊疑问句:What do you think of.../Who...?(回答具体内容)

Recently, I started to use an app to keep a record of my running. Each run I wanted to go a little farther, run a little faster and burn more calories (卡路里). Last night I finished an 8.3-km run in 46 minutes and burnt 468 calories. In comparison, my run two days ago was 8.6 km in 46 minutes with 483 calories burnt. This inner self-comparison left me feeling disappointed. I became so focused (专注的) on the numbers that I forgot to consider what I achieved.
These tiny differences in numbers kept me away from the bigger picture: how did I actually feel after completing my most recent run Well, honestly, I was completely tired out. What good is running to beat your top score if you don’t feel on top
We should exercise for the purpose of building our confidence. And working out harder and faster may serve that purpose. But confidence building comes with being able to do more in our day-to-day life, experiencing less pain and more freedom in movement, and feeling good after a workout. Fitness should help us with our quality (质量) of life, the ability to sleep, good memory, among other things. Fitness should not just come with the eagerness for the success in numbers.
In our busy lives, we only have limited time for fitness. When we do physical exercise, we should value what feels good over what looks or sounds good. Sometimes what serves us and our health is coming home and doing a light workout, like going on a short bike ride. Sometimes what serves us is simply going to sleep at 9:30 p.m. instead of forcing ourselves into a workout. Apps of this kind are a great way for us to keep an eye on our health. But don’t read into the numbers to the point where you lose out on feeling proud that you are taking care of yourself. So my advice is: when you do physical exercise, make sure you feel good about yourself over feeling good about the numbers.
1.Why did the writer start to use the app
.
2.What did the writer forget to consider when he became too focused on the numbers
.
3.According to the writer, what should be our purpose of doing exercise
.
4.When you do physical exercise, which do you think is more important, feeling good about yourself or feeling good about the numbers Why (Please give two reasons.)

Skipping to victory
Zhou Qi is a 17-year-old student from Hangzhou. Zhejiang. Last September he broke the Guinness (吉尼斯) World Record for the most single skips in one minute, with a result of 374. The record had stood unbroken for ten years. Daisuke Mimura from Japan held it with 348 skips in 2013.
Interestingly, Zhou’s new record is not even his personal best. “My best performance was 396 times in one minute. That was done in the 2nd Primary and Secondary School Students’ Rope Skipping Championship in 2020. My coach said I had already broken the world record. It was at that time that I made up my mind to apply for the Guinness World Record,” Zhou said.
However, the road to success was far from smooth. For years, Zhou practised with a special steel rope designed for competítion. It’s light and strong. But because of the rope he used, his first Guinness application was considered invalid (无效). After online communication with the records management team, Zhou quickly changed to a common rope recognized (认证) by the Guinness World Records. He soon got used to it.
Whatever kind of rope Zhou used, his strict training stood him in good sporting condition. Zhou has been in the school rope skipping team for seven years. He has jumped rope for about four hours each day. He would also run around the playground to improve his physical strength.
Now a high school student, Zhou said he’ll put his studies first. But he won’t stop training and still hopes to beat his own record one day.

A total of 23 spotted seals (斑海豹) were put back into the waters off the coast of Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023 as part of China’s continuous efforts to protect endangered wildlife.
The seals were hunted and sold, but have now been saved and marked for future protection. A fishery law enforcement ship arrived at the sea area near Dalian in the morning, carrying the spotted seals. The seals were let go free one by one into the sea. They swam freely in the water, returning to their natural home.
Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They are the only kind of seals that can breed (繁殖) in Chinese waters. Like migratory (迁徙的) birds, they appear around October every year in Liaodong Bay, and take the long journey back to the Northwest Pacific in May after breeding. They are often considered as the “panda of the sea”.
Thanks to China’s top-class national protection in recent years, the population of spotted seals in Chinese waters has reached around 2,000, while the global population is between 400,000 and 600,000. Studies have shown that these 2,000 spotted seals are of great importance for the study and research on spotted seals.
To protect this rare animal and its ecological environment, the Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 1992. In January 2002, they were included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance. Covering an area of 560,000 hectares with a coastline of about 370 kilometers, the wetlands are rich in biological resources. They have become home to nationally protected animals such as the spotted seal, finless porpoise, killer whales, false killer whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and East Asian river dolphins.
Since 1992, researchers in Dalian have successfully saved 388 spotted seals and put 299 of them back into the wild.

Stop Talking; Start Planting
Children are rarely invited to speak at the United Nations General Assembly (联合国大会). But there stood Felix Fink, a German boy. “Adults know the environmental problems and they know the solutions,” he said. “But we don’t know why there is so little action. Perhaps we have to depend on ourselves to save our future.”
At the time of this speech, Fink was already four years into his leadership of the “Plant-for-the-Planet” group. He had been calling on children around the world to help slow the Earth’s warming by reforesting the planet. Now, Fink is 26 years old and his group has planted over 14 billion trees in more than 130 nations. Tens of thousands of children have been trained to become “climate ambassadors” in their home communities.
“Plant-for-the-Planet” came out of a school project when Fink was a fourth grader. The topic was climate change. To his nine-year-old worldview, that meant a danger to his favorite animal, the polar bear. The boy began to do his research online. Instead of information about polar bears, he found stories about Wangari Maathai. The Kenyan woman had planted 30 million trees in order to fix the environment of her hometown. The effort won her the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
Fink realized that it was not really about saving polar bears. Instead, it was about saving humans. He made a big decision: to plant one million trees in Germany. He talked about it with his schoolmates and with his head teacher. No one expected anything to come of it, but the boy was serious about his goal. Two months later, Fink planted his first tree, a crab apple, near the entrance to his school.
The story attracted a lot of media attention in no time. Word spread quickly. By the time Fink made his speech at the UN, the young man had planted his millionth tree in Germany.
“Plant-for-the-Planet” now aims to plant one trillion trees. That’s 1,000 billion. Those trees could take in ten billion tons of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) every year. Fink says that will buy time for the world to get serious about climate change.
1.Who was invited to speak at the United Nations General Assembly
.
2.Why did Fink call on children around the world in the speech
.
3.What is the goal of “Plant-for-the-Planet” now
.
4.What will you do to protect the environment Why (Please give two reasons.)

International Mother Language Day
A language is much more than just a way of communicating. Language, and especially our mother language, is an important part of our culture. There are about 6,500 languages in the world, but did you know that a language disappears and dies every two weeks
In 1999, a special day to celebrate and protect all the languages of the world was created: International Mother Language Day. It is on 21 February. The idea for this special day came from Bangladesh, a country in South Asia, and 21 February is also the day when Bangladeshis mark the day that the Bangla language was officially accepted. Bangladeshis celebrate the day by holding competitions and singing songs.
Every year, UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) chooses a different theme (主题) and holds different events. For example, in 2005, there was a focus on Braille and sign languages, and in 2017, a focus on how multilingual (多语言的) education could help the world to have a better future. Many countries have also set up special projects to mark this day. For example, in 2014, the Indian government provided digital (数字的) learning materials for schools and colleges in the 22 most widely spoken Indian languages. It is said that there are around 750 languages in India, and, sadly, that around 250 more languages have been lost in the last 50 years.
The Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azouley, pointed out in a recent speech on International Mother Language Day that mother languages “shape millions of developing young minds”. She believes that children learn best in their mother language, and that it is important that children should have this opportunity. Around the world, 40% of the population can’t be able to learn in a language they can understand or speak.
At least 43% of all languages are at risk, and fewer than 100 of the world’s languages are used in the digital world. Most Internet communication is in one of the following languages: English, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Indonesian, Malayan, Japanese, Russian and German. But everyone has the right to use their own mother language, and to keep the memories, traditions and ways of thinking that their language represents. And this is what International Mother Language Day is all about.
1.Why was International Mother Language Day created
.
2.When is International Mother Language Day
.
3.In what language do children learn best according to Audrey Azouley
.
4.Do you think it is necessary to have such a language day to protect International mother language Give two reasons.

On March 2, 2022, world leaders at the 5th meeting of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) reached a historic agreement to solve the problems of plastic. They agreed that by 2024, they would create and sign a new treaty (条约) on plastics. The new treaty would create international laws that could help bring plastic waste under control.
Because plastic is useful for so many purposes, it has become a part of nearly all areas of our lives. It’s hard to look anywhere without things made of plastic. It’s reported that now 400 million tons of plastic is produced every year. By 2040, the number is expected to double. Although there’s a lot of talk about recycling, only 9% of all the plastic ever created has been recycled.
Almost all kinds of plastic are made from some kind of oil. It gives off dangerous gases (气体) when it’s produced and also when it’s burned or buried (掩埋) in the ground. Scientists say plastics are responsible for 4.5% of the world’s greenhouse gases.
Plastic doesn’t break down like natural materials, such as wood. Instead, it just breaks into smaller and smaller pieces, and finally tiny bits of plastic called microplastics. In recent years, microplastics have been found almost everywhere, from the North Pole to Antarctica, from the top of the Earth’s tallest mountain to the deepest point in the sea. They’ve even been found in the bodies of animals including humans.
The treaty is expected to cover the whole plastic “life cycle”, including making it, reusing it, recycling it, and getting rid of (处理) it. The treaty will also cover how to deal with microplastics in the oceans, on land, and in the things we eat. It is expected to lay out rules to get rid of single-use plastics as well.
Deciding on the specific rules and goals that will go in the treaty will probably be difficult. The treaty is likely to require all countries to take their own steps to meet the treaty’s goals, and offer poorer countries money to help them meet the goals.
1.How much plastic is produced every year now
.
2.When does plastic give off dangerous gases
.
3.What does the whole plastic “life cycle” include
.
4.What do you think of the idea of creating the new treaty on plastics Why do you think so (Give at least two reasons.)

The Merchant of Venice is a famous play written by William Shakespeare. It tells the story of a Venetian merchant named Antonio who borrows money from a Jewish moneylender named Shylock.
Antonio’s friend, Bassanio, needs money to marry a woman named Portia. Antonio agrees to borrow the money from Shylock on the condition that if he cannot repay the money, Shylock can take a pound of his flesh.
Meanwhile, Portia’s father has left a will stating that any man who wishes to marry her must choose the correct casket out of three, one gold, one silver, and one lead. Many men have tried and failed, but Bassanio correctly chooses the lead casket and wins Portia’s hand in marriage.
Back in Venice, news reaches Antonio that his ships, which were carrying his goods and making him money, have been lost at sea. He is unable to repay his debt to Shylock, who demands his pound of flesh as agreed.
Portia, disguised as a lawyer, arrives in Venice to help Antonio. She argues that Shylock must take it without losing any blood, as stated in their agreement. Shylock is forced to give up his claim, and Antonio is saved.

With the development of technology, a screen reading behavior is appearing. More and more people do some reading by their phones rather than paper books.
Some people say that e-books are more convenient (方便的) than paper books. People learn at different speeds, and mobile learning allows people to learn in their own way at their own pace (步伐). It is also easier for them to share with friends and read at bedtime.
While others say that paper books are more convenient for us to take notes and do less harm to our eyes. And a study shows paper reading can help students get higher scores on a test than online reading.
Which do you prefer: Paper Reading or Online Reading
Ann Reading online gives me a large amount of reading. I can read whatever I want and wherever I am. If I want to get more information about something I just read, I can easily search it on the Internet. I always turn off the ads to focus (集中). The wading app will recognize (辨别) my preference for books and prepare books for me.
Bobby I don’t prefer online reading. While I am reading online, I get distracted (分散) all the time. Some ads coming up on the screen will cut in my thoughts. This is not helpful to build a thinking system. Maybe when I read something not important such as a comic book. I will choose online reading. But when it comes to something serious, I’d like to choose paper reading.
Though the two ways of reading have their own advantages and disadvantages, they both play an important part in our life. And whatever advantages online reading has, it just offers a way of reading. It doesn’t take the place of any of the ways. As long as we choose the right way at the right time, we can get something from it.

When you come back to your home on a hot summer night, you find that the lights are already on, the air conditioner has been working for 30 minutes to cool the room, and the rice you prepared this morning has been cooked right before you arrive. This is the magic of a smart home.
A smart home is a special home where you can remotely control things with your phone. There are many kinds of smart home products, from making your home warm to making it bright, and even keeping you safe.
And they really are “smart”. Smart home apps even have self-learning skills. It means that they can learn when you usually do things and change to suit you. Some can also set lights to change based on sunrise or sunset times. And some systems can tell you if there is someone in your home when you are not there, or even call for help if there is danger.
Although smart homes are getting more popular in China and around the world, there are some problems from time to time. Paul Boag, a man from the UK who helps people with their technology, wrote that it is not always easy to set up these smart things. Even his wife, who used to be an engineer, found fitting the smart home light switches (开关) was a huge challenge for her. Besides, the smart home apps can be trouble. Many of them are not designed well, and each device (设备) has its own app. This means you have to deal with a lot of apps. But except for these problems, smart homes are still a great way to make life easier.
1.What is a smart home
.
2.What are the disadvantages of smart homes
.
3.What other “smart” skills do you want your home to have Why

Little John worked in his father’s wine factory. His main job was to brush the wooden barrels (桶) and put them in order every morning, but the wind always blew the barrels here and there overnight.
John was so angry that he wrote a letter to the wind, “Please don’t blow down my barrels.” After seeing that, his father asked John with a smile, “Can the wind read your letter ” The little boy said, “I don’t know. I have no choice but to make the wish.”
The next morning, when John ran to check the barrels, he found that the barrels were blown here and there again. The little boy felt very unhappy and cried. His father came and said kindly, “Son, don’t be sad. We may have no way to deal with the wind, but we may have ways for you, so we can have our own ways to beat the wind.” Then John dried his tears and thought over and over. Finally, he thought of an idea. He filled the empty barrels with water. After that, he went home worriedly.
The third morning, John was so glad to find the barrels were placed in good order. He smiled happily and told his father, “It’s a very simple way, that is, to make the barrels heavier.” John’s father smiled and said, “We can’t change many things in the world, but we can change ourselves. A Magic Filter (滤镜)
Steph just posted (发布) a photo of her brunch with flowers “borrowed” from her neighbor’s garden. It looked perfect thanks to a photo editing app called TrueBeauty. However, the food had turned cold after she had worked on her photo, so she threw it away.
On the other side of the city, Matt tried to take a good gym selfie (自拍照) with cooking oil on his body to make it shiny, but wasn’t happy with the results. Then he saw the ad of TrueBeauty. With one touch, his body looked amazing right away. He posted the photo online and got in the shower to wash the oil off. Both Steph and Matt were surprised to get so many negative comments later. Somehow, Steph’s latest post showed eggs with flies all over them, coffee that looked grey and dead flowers, while Matt’s showed his body being covered in something that looked like dirty butter. They tried to delete the photos but failed. Then they received a message from the app developer:
Dear User,Are you as beautiful inside as you seem outside If you want your pictures to show the real you, try being as beautiful in real life as you are on your social media. Have a truly beautiful day! Love, TrueBeauty PS. Once you use our filter (滤镜), all your future photos will have it automatically!
To hide the ugly picture, Steph made her account (账号) private. She didn’t want to do anything if she couldn’t post photos of it on social media. Depressed and empty, Steph went downstairs. There she met Mrs. Robinson in her garden. Without anything else to do, Steph joined her in taking care of her flowers.
The following couple of hours made her feel happy again. Afterward, Mrs. Robinson suggested that they take a selfie together to mark the day.
Steph loved the picture very much. She thought it was a real pity not to share it, so she posted the picture. When it went online, it looked exactly the same! Then she made her account public again and added the text to the photo: “Me and my neighbor in her garden #TrueBeauty.”
As Matt, one of Steph’s followers, read her post, he had an idea. He knocked on his neighbor’s door to offer to help take her rubbish to the bins along with his.

A family found me and stopped. Then I got wrapped (包裹) in a thick jacket, carefully and gently. A woman picked me up. She lowered her head looking at me. I could see the worry and sadness in her eyes.
“Honey, dogs are everywhere in this area. We can’t save all of them,” said the man.
He was right. There were so many of us—homeless and forgotten.
The woman replied, “She can’t even stand up. How can we turn our back on such a poor life ”
After a moment of silence, the man finally agreed. They soon took me to a nearby pet clinic. I started to believe every dog has its day. But my body told a different story. My legs were broken, my teeth were worn down, and my eyes were clouded. The vet said I had heartworm (犬心丝虫), and it was getting worse because of my age. He suggested letting me pass away naturally. “That will never happen,” the woman refused.

How many children does Galina Tereschkova want to have
解题思路 本题Galina Tereschkova和children为关键词,根据人名定位到第二段。由她说的话“I have one child and she is enough for me”可知,她想要一个孩子。
答案 One.
一、细节理解题
一般来说,阅读表达的前几道都属于细节题,能从文中直接找到答案,做题步骤如下:
Step 1 画出问题中的关键词——疑问词、人物、事件等重要信息;
Step 2 使用关键词到文中定位,找到对应句,画出来;
答案:Working out through online videos.
(问题和对应句都是“主系表”结构,原句的主语对应问题的疑问词组which way,可直接作为回答)
答案:Because he doesn’t like being watched by others.
(问题的疑问词是why,回答应是because引导的句子;问题与原文人称不同,回答需要作相应调整)
“Without being with someone in person, you will be less willing(愿意的)to work out to your best(题3). Working out at the gym allows you to have advice in real time and get pushed harder,” my sister said to me. “Well, if you really want to have a try, first, choose proper programs or videos. That’s very important. And then ask your friends for advice. Their experiences can give you a good insight into what you can expect.Anyway, don’t be addicted(沉迷的) to it. You should try different ways to work out to be healthy.”
3.What is the problem of working out without someone else in person
答案:People will be less willing to work out to their best.

1.Why did the writer start to use the app
.
2.What did the writer forget to consider when he became too focused on the numbers
.
3.According to the writer, what should be our purpose of doing exercise
.
4.When you do physical exercise, which do you think is more important, feeling good about yourself or feeling good about the numbers Why (Please give two reasons.)
.
【答案】1.To keep a record of his running. 2.He forgot to consider what he achieved. 3.Building our confidence. 4.Feeling good about yourself is more important than feeling good about the numbers. Because exercise should improve our quality of life and feeling good about yourself is more motivating and sustainable.

1.Who was invited to speak at the United Nations General Assembly
.
2.Why did Fink call on children around the world in the speech
.
3.What is the goal of “Plant-for-the-Planet” now
.
4.What will you do to protect the environment Why (Please give two reasons.)
.
【答案】1.Felix Fink, a German boy. 2.To help slow the Earth’s warming by reforesting the planet. 3.To plant one trillion trees. 4.I will plant more trees. First, trees can absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which helps improve the air quality. Second, more trees can also prevent soil erosion and protect the ecological environment. I will also reduce the use of disposable products. Because disposable products consume a lot of resources and cause environmental pollution. By reducing their use, we can save resources and protect the environment.

1.How much plastic is produced every year now
.
2.When does plastic give off dangerous gases
.
3.What does the whole plastic “life cycle” include
.
4.What do you think of the idea of creating the new treaty on plastics Why do you think so (Give at least two reasons.)
.
【答案】1.400 million tons. 2.When it’s produced, burned, or buried. 3.Making, reusing, recycling, and getting rid of it. 4.I think creating the new treaty on plastics is a great idea. Because plastic waste is harming the ecosystem and the new treaty will help to raise people’s awareness of environmental protection. (开放题,无标准答案)
