At the age of eight, I attended my first Kathak (卡塔克舞) class because I didn’t want to feel left out by my friends. My mother was very 13 of my decision. “Give it a try. You might just love it,” she said.
However, four years later, I was sure I 14 Kathak. Maybe it was because of the online classes during the flu seasons, which felt like a waste of time. Maybe it was the seeds of self-doubt that had taken root. Or maybe it was just the one-step chakkar (脚尖旋转), which seemed as frightening and 15 as climbing Mount Everest. I couldn’t be certain what caused this, but I was struggling to understand why I was still dancing.
Seeing my frustration, my mother tried to help by seeking advice from my friends. For a teenager, that was humiliating (屈辱的), and I held her responsible for my 16 . I spent more time arguing with my mother than practicing Kathak.
Looking back, I realize that if my mother hadn’t insisted, I would have quit long ago, and my life would probably be 17 . However, fate had its own plan. After I reached the ninth grade, I had bigger things to worry about, like my sleep schedule and the science project. Kathak took a backseat on my list of priorities (优先). Too busy to hate anything or anyone, I stopped wasting my breath arguing with my mother. I just got by with each dancing class, and, if I was honest, I kind of appreciated those two hours when there was nothing else on my mind.
Months went by, I didn’t realize how much I had 18 , but suddenly I could do ten one-step chakkars. I started to look forward to dancing. As I danced, the sound of each drumbeat resonated (共振) deeply within me. My body moved naturally to the melody, and the jingle of bells chased away my 19 thoughts. I felt peaceful. I found myself enjoying every second of it.
Reflecting on the journey that has brought me this far, I realize that passion isn’t always love at first sight. Sometimes, it grows slowly. For me, Kathak is not just about dancing; it’s about self-discovery and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.

I started working at a new company. A reorganization was happening right as I got there, and tensions (紧张) were high. I decided to do something about it.
I 13 out little paper ponds (池塘) from blue paper I found in the copy room. I made eighteen of these ponds with little paper lily pads (睡莲浮叶) and reed grass, waited for everyone to go home, and dropped them around the office.

Around the World was Eddie’s favorite 13 game. He loved racing against a classmate to solve a math problem. Eddie won and lost. But his friend Michael never lost. He was the champion (冠军) of Around the World. Every week he would go around the classroom winning against everyone.
“Are we all ready ” Mrs. Stretch asked. Everyone 14 .
“Then let’s begin,” said Mrs. Stretch. “Talia, you start.”
Talia was new to the class. This would be her first time playing. She jumped up and went over to Eddie’s desk. Eddie stood up, too.
“Twelve times two,” said Mrs. Stretch.
“Twenty-four!” Talia called out, a second before Eddie could.
Eddie sat down, 15 but still happy to know the right answer.
Talia moved on to challenge the next classmate. She seemed unstoppable. Finally, Talia got to Michael.
“Eight times twelve.” Mrs. Stretch said.
“Ninety-six!” shouted Talia first.
The class was shocked, then everyone cheered for Talia, today’s champion “Nice job, Talia,” said Mrs. Stretch. “It’s time for 16 , everyone. Now line up, please.”
Eddie stood to go to lunch. He noticed Michael had his head down on his desk, his face buried in his arms. Eddie walked to Michael and put his hand on his shoulder.
“It’s OK to lose,” Eddie said. “I lose Around the World all the time. You’re still great at multiplication.”
“That’s not why I’m upset,” Michael said into his arms. “No one 17 me. They cheered when I lost.”
“You think they cheered against you ” Eddie asked.
“Why else ” Michael said.
“I think they cheered because they were too surprised,” Eddie said. “You’re the champ. Talia had to do her best to 18 you. So, people were excited about it.”
“She is really good at math,” Michael agreed.
“And so are you,” said Eddie. “You help us all work harder. Because of you, we 19 have the best math class in the whole school.”
“Thanks,” Michael said. He smiled at Eddie, “Do you want to sit together at lunch ”
“Sure,” said Eddie. “You can quiz me on math problems and help me get better.”
Michael stood up. “ 20 accepted!”

Digging into the Past
Last year, Kate Marshall was given a very exciting opportunity—to help her father, who’s a history expert, at a historical site (遗址)! He was leading a team to dig up and explore the area.
When they arrived, though, the site wasn’t quite what Kate had 13 .
In fact, the whole area was actually still covered in grass. So the first job was to remove it all and prepare the 14 for digging. Says Kate, “Dad hadn’t warned me I’d have to work so hard as soon as we got there!”
But when the site was completely cleared, the team found pieces of ancient pots on the ground. However, those weren’t as exciting as everyone had thought. Kate’s dad told them that the important pots were still under the ground. And because no one had 15 them for centuries, the team would learn far more about their history—but first they would have to dig deeper. Says Kate, “Some people were a bit disappointed by that news. But we all knew Dad was right!”
The site was divided into small squares, with a 16 for each square, who told everyone how to dig. “That wasn’t as easy as it sounded, either,” Kate reports. “Instead of just digging great big holes, we all had to dig really 17 , and remove small amounts of soil each time. That way, everyone made sure they didn’t miss anything. So it made sense.”
“My friends at home were really interested in what I was doing,” Kate explains. “They kept texting me to ask what I’d found. They probably imagined it was things like gold jewelry (珠宝). But actually, we were looking for 18 , everyday objects that could tell us about the people who’d lived in the area centuries ago.”
In the end, though, Kate wasn’t disappointed by what she found. “One day, when I was digging away, I found a stone with a strange shape. It 19 out to be a small figure of a horse. Someone had obviously made it hundreds of years ago, which meant it was really important. Dad cleaned it up, and said it would go to the nearby 20 . I was pleased with that at last, as I’d found something interesting!”

The Fish I Didn’t Catch
I still remember my first fishing trip as if it were but yesterday. It was a still, sweet day of early summer. I received the first fishing pole from my uncle’s hand, and walked with him towards the 13 .
My uncle, who knew where the best hangouts of fish were, fishing pole kindly placed me at the most favorable point. I threw out my line as I had so often seen others, and 14 eagerly for a bite. Nothing came of it. “Try again,” said my uncle. Suddenly the bait (鱼饵) went down out of sight. “Now for it,” I thought, “Here is a fish at last.”
I made a strong pull, and brought up a tangle of weeds (一团海草). Again and again I cast out my line and drew it back 15 . I looked at my uncle appealingly (可怜巴巴地). “Try once more,” he said, “We fishermen must have 16 . It took me a whole day until I got my first fish.”
Suddenly something pulled hard at my line, and swept off with it into deep water. Jerking it up, I saw a big fish wriggling (扭来扭去) in the sun. “Uncle!” I cried, looking back in uncontrollable 17 , “I’ve got a fish!” “Not yet,” said my uncle. As he spoke, there was a plash (泼溅) in the water, my hook hung empty from the line. I had lost my 18 . My patience was used up.
I sat down on the nearest stone and 19 to be comforted. Even my uncle promised that there were more fish in the river. He refitted my bait, put the pole again in my hands, and told me to try my luck once more.
“But remember, boy,” he said, “Never show off catching a fish until he is on dry ground.”
Though years have now passed, I have always been reminded of the fish that I did not catch. When I hear people show off a work as yet undone, I call to mind that scene by the river, and the wise warning of my uncle, “It’s no use to talk too 20 about anything until it’s done.”
