It is often argued that one of the most common differences between the British and American sense of humour is that Americans don't understand irony (反语). Simon Pegg explores this topic in depth in his article What are you laughing at ? He concludes that this statement isn't true and I quite agree with him.
One of the differences seems to be how often both nations use irony. The British use irony on a daily basis, whereas Americans don't. I think Americans understand British irony; what they don't understand is the need to use it so frequently. When Americans use irony they want to state that they are “only kidding”. They feel the need to make a joke more obvious than the British do;maybe this results from a fear of offending people.
I think the differences between the British and American sense of humour arise from a cultural difference between the two. American jokes are more open, a bit like Americans themselves. British jokes,on the other hand, are more reserved (含蓄的). There is usually a hidden meaning.
Certain American comedies have gained huge success in Britain and vice versa (反之亦然). Therefore, although there are differences between both comic styles, there is still an appreciation and understanding of the other sense of humour. Both the British and American versions (版本) of the comedy The Office are hugely successful on both sides of the Atlantic. Both shows have their own cultural differences, yet they describe a lifestyle which both Americans and the British can relate to in a similar way.

A.Culture. B.Lifestyle.

A.American comedies have gained more success than those in Britain
B.the British and Americans can understand the same comedy of different forms
C.the same comedy can be performed totally differently in different countries
D.the differences between British and American comedies are becoming greater

Ecotourism
Ecotourism is a responsible way to travel to natural areas which protects the environment and improves the income of the local people. For example, a walk through the rainforest is not ecotourism unless that particular walk helps the environment and the people who live there. A rafting trip (漂流旅行)is only ecotourism if it makes travelers understand the idea of protecting the area.
Adventure Travel
Adventure travel is an unusual experience which includes some level of risk and uncertainty, and may include some unusual means of transport. This kind of tourism is often divided into “soft” and “hard” adventure holidays. Soft adventures have a lower level of risk, have greater comfort and are less physically tiring. Hard adventures have very basic accommodation(住宿) and greater physical challenges, such as mountain climbing, backpacking or river expeditions(探险).
Sustainable(可持续的)Tourism
This includes any form of tourism that does not influence the environment or stop other travelers from enjoying the same experience.
Responsible Tourism
Responsible tourism operates to reduce any influence by the tourists on the environment. A camping trip which aims to pick up all its rubbish leaving none behind would be considered responsible tourism.
Nature-based Tourism
Nature-based tourism is any holiday that concentrates on one part of nature such as a birdwatching holiday.
Green Tourism
Green tourism is any accommodation for a holiday which operates in an environmentally friendly way.
Multi-sport Adventures
These holidays concentrate on physical outdoor activities. Rafting, riding, mountain biking, climbing, surfing, diving, etc, may all be offered on this kind of holiday.

Niels Bohr did well at school without ever being brilliant, usually coming third or fourth in a class of about 20 students. If he really was good at any subject, it was, perhaps, physical education. He was an excellent soccer player, yet not as good as his brother. This was Niels Bohr, the world-famous Nobel prize winning physicist.
Born to a physiology(生理学)professor,Niels lived in a world of ideas and discussion from his very early childhood at home. He developed an interest in physics and mathematics from the early days of his education. With no laboratory available in school and college, he would perform experiments in his father's laboratory. His first work on surface tension was done here, for which he won the Gold Medal in 1906 from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences.
Early in his scientific career, Bohr made great contributions to the understanding of atomic(原子的)structure based on quantum mechanics(量子力学). Neils Bohr came up with the model of an atom which was able to explain all the properties(性质)of the atom. It is this atomic model that is accepted even today with only very slight improvements. This work won him the Nobel Prize for physics in 1922.
When the Nazis controlled Denmark, his life became difficult. He had to escape to Sweden in 1943 in a fishing boat;from there he fled to England. England opened up opportunities of working on the atom bomb(原子弹). After a few months he joined a British research team and went to Los Alamos in the United States where the team continued to work on the project.
Niels was also deeply concerned with making people realize the destructive power of the atomic bomb. He published a letter to the United Nations in 1950 which asked them to help get rid of nuclear(核的)weapons in the world. This and his other activities won Bohr the first U. S. Atoms for Peace Award in 1957. He spent his remaining years showing, people that nuclear energy must be used in a positive and productive way.
29.Who probably helped Niels Bohr develop an interest in physics?

30.Niels Bohr received the Nobel Prize mainly because of________.

A.the power of the atomic bomb will be used properly

C.nuclear energy has been used in quite a few ways
D.Niels would like to go on with his research work

Hampton Hotels created Save-A-Landmark in April 2000. Judy Christa is a manager for the hotel chain. She was especially excited about the Lincon's Cottage project.“I grew up in Illinois, the Land of Lincoln,”she says.In ten years, Save-A-Landmark has restored 54 sites in 45 states. __36__When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.
The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. __37__
The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears:clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. __38__ It included such items as automobiles and new houses.
By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared:the “life-enriching”level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. __39__
On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?
A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. __40__In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.
A.Then a third level appeared.
B.Human wants seem endless.
C.When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears.
D.There are several levels of wants in one's life.
E.At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.
F.Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.
G.Different people have different wants on each level.
