A video of a German couple opening a bakery (面包店) in China and employing workers who
have impaired hearing (听力受损) spread widely on social media. It touched thousands of Chinese.
The German couple—Dorothee and Brutzer, known by their Chinese names of Du Xue hui and
Wu Zhangrong, have lived in Changsha for nearly 20 years. Brutzer started to learn Mandarin (普通
话) in 1997, 5 years before he and his wife came to China. In their first year in China, they worked as
a part of the Hunan Disabled Person’s Federation to help children with impaired hearing. The couple
decided to stay in China after spending some time with children there. To better help children in need,
they worked with International China Concern (国 际 关 心 中 国 慈 善 协 会 ) to care for disabled
children and learned Chinese sign language as well.
Years later, Brutzer opened a bakery in Changsha in 2011 to help local people with impaired
hearing. He even employed a professional German baker and invited her to China to teach them for
four years. Now, there are eleven bakers working in the store and one of them is intern (实习生). A
child they helped years ago is also one of the workers in the bakery.
“When I was working at the Disabled Person’s Federation, I saw there were some art training
programs for disabled people to choose and they all did a great job. Then we decided to open a bakery
and employ them, because they can make more money compared to selling flowers or paintings,”
Brutzer said.
During the hard times in 2020, Brutzer even made a decision to close his bakery because few
people came out to buy things. Thankfully, the bakery got much attention online and many people
visited the store. In the future, Brutzer hopes that he can remain in Changsha and run the bakery for as
long as possible so that more deaf people will have the chance to learn bread-making and live by their
own abilities.

When he was in primary school, Dylan Woodley was teaching his classmates about animations

21,000 “likes”. The video is just four minutes long, but Dylan spent two years creating it. He arranged
his Lego bricks and filmed the scene he needed. Then, he tore the bricks down, rebuilt them and
filmed the next scene. He repeated this countless times. Finally, he carefully finished his video.
Dylan is looking ahead to a job in the animation industry. “It is a great love. I can take it as far
as I want,” he said.

7
阅读短文及文后 A~E 选项,选出可以填入 1~5 各题空白处的最佳选项。
Body language is used by people for sending messages to one another. 41 Today, let’s
learn a very important part of body language—eye contact.
42 It can be the key to communication. Eye contact can show feelings such as
friendliness, interest and understanding.
In Western countries, using eye contact in conversations is very important. If you do not use eye
contact, Westerners may think that you are not listening. 43
However, in many Asian countries, looking down when talking with an older person, like a
teacher or a parent, is polite. 44 For example, an Asian person might look down while
listening to a Western speaker. The Western speaker might think this person is not interested in what
he or she is saying.
Not using eye contact can cause problems, but using too much is not polite either. In many
countries, watching other people, especially strangers, for a long time is impolite. 45
A. Eye contact means looking into another person’s eyes.
B. These differences can cause problems.
C. It is very useful because it can help you make yourself easily understand.
D. This may make them feel nervous.
E. And if you look away, they may also think that you are lying.
