Qingming Festival, also called Tomb-Sweeping Day, is a traditional Chinese holiday in early
April. Families honor their ancestors(祖先)and welcome spring during this time. The festival usually happens on April 4th or 5th when the weather turns warm and nature becomes green.
Families visit their ancestors’ graves(坟墓)to clean the tombs, offer flowers, and burn
paper money as a sign of respect(尊重). Nowadays, some people choose eco-friendly activities like planting trees or using flowers instead of fire. This helps protect the environment while remembering ancestors.
Qingming is not only about remembrance but also celebrating spring. People go on outings
to parks or the countryside, a tradition called “Taqing”. They fly kites, have picnics, and enjoy
blooming flowers. Many poets have written about Qingming. For example, Du Mu’s poem
describes rainy weather and quiet reflection, reminding people to slow down and appreciate(欣
赏)nature.
Food is also important. A popular snack is “qingtuan”—green rice balls made with mugwort
(艾草)juice and sweet bean paste. The green color stands for spring, and the round shape symbolizes family unity.
Qingming Festival connects the past and present. It encourages people to respect ancestors,
enjoy nature, and create new memories. Some even use online platforms to honor loved ones,
blending tradition with modern life.
This holiday shows Chinese values of family, respect, and living in harmony with nature.
24. What is the main purpose of cleaning tombs during Qingming
A. To plant trees for the environment B. To show respect to ancestors
C. To write poems about nature
25. Why do some people use flowers instead of fire during Qingming
A. To save money B. To follow modern fashion C. To protect the
environment
26. What does the underlined word "blending" mean in paragraph 5
A. Replacing B. Mixing C. Forgetting
3
27. Which value is NOT mentioned in the passage
A. Family bonds B. Respect for nature C. Love for technology
C
Maybe your dad said, “The harder you work for something, the more you’ll enjoy it.” Well,
father really did know best. Because a study finds that the harder mice have to work for a treat(
奖励), the better it tastes.
Mice were trained to push levers(杠杆) to get either of two treats. Press one lever, out comes a drop of sugar water. Press the other and they get a drop of different tasting sugar water.
Then things got interesting. Scientists made it harder to get one of the treats. They slowly
increased(增加) the difficulty - from one lever-press to five, then ten, then fifteen. In the end, this kind of sugar water cost 15 times more effort than the other.
The mice then returned to their home where both treats were freely available. And they
showed a strong preference for the treat they’d work harder to get. They seemed to find the
costlier(代价更大的) sugar water more delicious.
This makes evolutionary(进化的) sense. An animal wouldn’t survive(生存) if a little hard work left a bitter taste in its mouth.
28. How did scientists make one treat harder to get in this study
A. By changing the taste of sugar water.
B. By offering only one kind of the treats.
C. By increasing the number of lever-presses.
29. What does the underlined word “preference” in paragraph 4 mean
A.偏好 B.刺激 C. 反对
30. What do we know about mice according to the passage?
A. Mice are more hard-working than other animals.
B. Mice like the food they worked harder to get better.
C. Mice are so smart that they can choose more delicious food.
31. In which part of a newspaper can we probably read the passage
A. Art and Culture B. Sports and Health C. Science and Nature
