(careful→carefully)。
空格前为冠词(a/an/the)→ 填名词(如 a library)。
语态判断:被动语态(be+过去分词,如 The book was written)。
动词短语(如 take part in)。
形容词/副词:比较级(much easier than)、情感色彩词(amazing, disappointed)。
protect)。

It sounds incredible, but the small country of Greece seems to be burning down. Police
believe arsonists are responsible for at least half of the fires. Thirty people have died so f
1 , many of them trapped in their homes or their cars. Residents all over Greece have called
fire departments, police, and media about fires surrounding their homes, but there have simply not
been e 2 firemen to respond to all these fires.
The government has asked for aid from France, Italy, and Germany. Greek ruins that are
almost 3,000 years old are in d 3 of being burnt down. Fires surround Athens, the capital
city. The hillsides are ablaze, and there seems to be no end in sight. Entire villages have been
destroyed. There has been no rain for two months, and the trees are s 4 dry that just the heat
from an approaching fire causes them to explode into flames.
Police have arrested three suspected arsonists. One suspect, oddly enough, was still
complaining about the Olympics. He had applied to carry the torch into the stadium and light the
fire to officially start the Games. B 5 his application was ignored. "You have to be
somebody," was the reply he got when he called the Olympic Committee in Athens. "And you're
not—you're nobody," an official told him. The man was in jail for three years for trying to blow u
6 the committee's headquarters. Yesterday, police caught him walking away from a new fire
with an empty gas can in his hands.
"I'm nobody, huh " he told the police. "Well, I'm s 7 now!"

Happiness can be described as a positive mood and a pleasant state of mind. According to
recent polls (民意调查), sixty to seventy p 1 of Americans consider t 2 to be
moderately happy and one in twenty persons feels very unhappy. Psychologists have been
studying the factors that contribute to happiness. It is not predictable, nor is a person in an
apparently ideal situation necessarily happy. The ideal situation may have little to do with his
actual feelings.
A good education and income are usually considered necessary for happiness. T 3
both may contribute, they are only chief factors if the person is seriously under-educated or
actually suffering from lack of physical needs.
The rich are not likely to be h 4 than the middle-income group or even those with
very low incomes. People with college educations are somewhat happier than those who did not
graduate from high school, and it is b 5 that this is mainly because they have more o
6 to control their lives. Yet people with a high income and a college education may be less
happy than those with the same income and no college education.
Poor health does not rule out happiness except for the severely disabled or those in pain.
Learning to cope with a health problem can contribute to happiness. Those who have good
relationship with other family members are happier than those who live a 7 . Love has a
higher correlation with happiness than any other factor.
It should be noted that people quickly get used to what they have, and they are happiest
when they feel they are increasing their level no matter where it stands at a given time.
Children whose parents were happily married have happier childhoods, but are not
necessarily happier adults.
The best formula for happiness is to be able to develop AQ (Adversity Quotient that can be
of great benefit when running into trouble), to have a personal involvement and commitment, and
to develop self-confidence and self-esteem.

What is Earth Hour
Earth Hour is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and it’s a big event
usually at the end of March every year. On this evening, people ‘go dark’-that is, switch off lights
in their homes, schools and businesses all at the same time for one hour.
Earth Hour started in Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million people in Sydney turned off all
unnecessary lights for an hour. Since then it has grown into an i 1 event, and many
countries around the world have taken part. Famous buildings that have gone dark for Earth Hour i

and New York’s Empire State Building. Even astronauts on the Space Station have taken part by
reducing their power use on the station, and Google has shown its s 3 by making a dark
homepage for the event. What’s the idea b 4 Earth Hour
The idea is to raise awareness of environmental issues and call for action to protect nature.
It’s true that switching off the lights for just one hour saves only a small amount of power. But this
is only the b 5 .
On one level, joining in Earth Hour makes people think about the problem of environmental
issues and what we can do in everyday life to protect nature. For example, eating less meat, using
low-energy electrical items instead of high-energy o 6 and using green forms of
transport all help the planet.
But on another level, a large number of people all acting t 7 sends a powerful
message to governments and companies. It pushes them to take action on a large scale by
considering green issues when making big decisions.

A library for the future
Will the printed book still exist in 100 years Most people might answer with a “no”. But
the Future Library wants to c 1 that. In the year 2118, it will start printing paper books
that no one has ever had the chance to read before.
The Future Library was an art p 2 created by Scottish artist Katie Paterson. It
invites authors to write books that will remain unread until the year 2118. The manuscripts (原稿)
will be k 3 in the New Deichmanske Public Library in Oslo At the
same time, 1000 new trees have been p 4 in a forest outside the city. They will grow for
100 years before being cut down to create the paper to print the books.
By creating the Future Library, Katie Paterson hopes that books and readers will not
disappear in 100 years. She also e 5 people to enjoy a slow and peaceful life while the
trees grow up slowly.
Canadian science fiction legend Margaret Atwood has just become the first author to write
a book f 6 the Future Library. “I am very honored and happy to be part of this project.
At least, it believes the human race will still be around in a hundred years!” said Atwood
humorously. “The Future Library will attract a lot of attention over the decades (数 十 年 ), as
people follow the progress of the trees and try to g 7 what the writers have put into their
sealed (密封的) boxes.”

It sounds incredible, but the small country of Greece seems to be burning down. Police

fire departments, police, and media about fires surrounding their homes, but there have simply not

B
What makes you happy in life Perhaps it is the love of your family or the friendship of
your classmates. We all want people to like us, so it is n 1 for us to do what we can to
please others. H 2 , we also know that this is not always possible. Life does not always
run smoothly for us and mistakes happen.
What happens when you make a mistake Do you try to h 3 the fact, or deny any
responsibility We all know that this behavior usually makes the situation much w 4 . As
we grow and mature, we should realize the best thing to do after a mistake is m 5 is to
accept responsibility, and to offer an apology to those affected.
Taking ownership of a mistake and saying you’re sorry allows several positive things to
happen. It helps people to regain trust and confidence in you, and it helps people to repair any d
6 that was caused by the mistake.
Another very important aspect of saying you’re sorry is that it helps you to regain respect
for yourself. It allows you to put a mistake behind you, and to move on with your life. Accepting
responsibility also helps us to learn from our errors, and encourages us not to repeat them in the
future. Perhaps it also helps us to learn how to forgive others who make mistakes. Learning to say
you’re sorry is a sure way to learn how to r 7 yourself and others.

The idea is to raise awareness of environmental issues and call for action to protect nature.
It’s true that switching off the lights for just one hour saves only a small amount of power. But this

On one level, joining in Earth Hour makes people think about the problem of environmental
issues and what we can do in everyday life to protect nature. For example, eating less meat, using
low-energy electrical items instead of high-energy o 6 and using green forms of
transport all help the planet.

considering green issues when making big decisions.
