My son is 3 years old and likes doing things repeatedly. There was a period of time last
summer when all he wanted to watch was a video about farming machines. He watched it so often
that my brain started to shut down when I heard the boring background music, but the little boy
never lost interest upon repetition (重复).
Although it might be boring to us parents, repetition “has many advantages” in childhood
development, says Rebecca Parlakian from the nonprofit ZERO TO THREE. One of them is
“Small children are truly the most persistent (执着的) humans,” says Parlakian. “They are just
driven to master the world around them, and they do that through repetition.”
“Learning requires building connections between neurons (神经元), and repetition enables
that process. When a group of neurons need to work together to perform a specific task or process
information, they must be activated (激 活 ) repeatedly. The more often they are activated, the
stronger their connections become,” says Harvard neuroscientist Charles Nelson.
As children learn things by doing things over and over, they also start to take some comfort.
That’s especially clear during my son’s habit at bedtime, when my husband or me read his favorite
book about construction vehicles (工程车) over and over again. Now I understand that this habit
has not only taught him about different types of trucks, but brought him the comfort and safety of
knowing that once we’re reading, he will fall asleep with his head resting on my shoulder.
So, if you find yourself feeling annoyed at your child’s repeated jokes, games or stories,
know that they are just working hard to practice and master their new found knowledge and skills,
and it’s good for the brain development.

Most people believe happiness comes from pleasure, like good food, jobs and all the nice
things money can buy.
Pleasure is an important part of the quality of life, but it doesn’t bring happiness by itself.
When people think deeper about what makes a worthy life, they start to look past just happy
memories beyond pleasure. These events and experiences share some similarities with pleasure,
but they belong to a different word called “enjoyment”.
Enjoyment takes place when we not only meet expectations but also achieve something
unexpected. It involves curiosity and a sense of achievement. These kinds of things are enjoyable,
like playing a tennis game that improves our skills, reading a book that shows new sides of things,
or having a conversation that leads us to express ideas, which we didn’t know we had. These
experiences may not be pleasurable at the moment, but when we think back on them afterwards,
we find them fun and wish they would happen again. After these enjoyable events, we know that
we have changed and grown.
Pleasure and enjoyment are different. Pleasure is easy to experience, like eating delicious
food without much effort. People can feel pleasure without any effort. But enjoyment happens
only as a result of full attention. So it’s impossible to enjoy a tennis game or a book without
paying full attention. Pleasure doesn’t make us grow. Growth needs full attention to goals that are
new and relatively challenging.
Life can be pleasant without enjoyment, but it leans on luck and the outside factors. To
improve the quality of our experience, we need to learn how to build enjoyment into our daily life.
6.Which is NOT mentioned about pleasure

7.What can bring enjoyment according to the examples in the passage
A.Eating food. B.Reading a book.
C.Buying things. D.Watching TV.
8.How can we improve our life experience
A.By being lucky. B.By building enjoyment.
C.By eating delicious food. D.By avoiding goals.
9.What does the underlined word “leans on” probably mean in the passage
A.Depends on. B.Gives in. C.Turns down. D.Gets over.
10.What is the best title of the passage
A.The Secret of Happiness B.Pleasure and Enjoyment
C.How to Achieve Enjoyment D.The Importance of Pleasure
C
BOOM! That’s a word we often use to describe a loud sound. It’s also part of the term
“sonic boom (音爆)”, which is something that happens when air is pushed so strongly and quickly
that it creates a loud noise.
On March 20, 2021, a rare daytime meteor (流星) created a sonic boom over parts of the
UK and France, according to Live Science. The meteor flew through the sky so fast that it could
hardly be seen, but it could definitely (绝对地) be heard.
So how exactly are sonic booms made You can think of air as being like water. When
something moves through water, you can see ripples (波纹). If the object moves very quickly, the
ripples start to run into each other.
The same thing happens in the air, even if it can’t be seen. When the object moves faster
than the speed of sound, the air is pushed hard, and it compresses (压缩) like the ripples on water.
This will create a sound wave that is very loud. This is a sonic boom.
In fact, lots of things can make sonic booms. When you go to the park and see people play
with whips (鞭子) and tops (陀螺), you might hear a tiny sonic boom when they crack the whip.
Aircraft that travel faster than the speed of sound can also make sonic booms.
A strong sonic boom can cause damage (伤 害 ) to windows or buildings, although the
possibility of this is very low, according to the US Air Force. The loud sound can also disturb (影
响) people on the ground and even cause hearing loss. That’s why supersonic aircraft are only
allowed in times of war.
1.What created a sonic boom on March 20, 2021
A.A strong wind. B.An airplane. C.A scientific experiment. D.A meteor.
2.Why is water mentioned in Paragraph 3
A.To describe what a ripple looks like.
B.To help explain how a sonic boom happens.
C.To prove that air can move quickly like water.
D.To explain how to tell whether an object is moving fast.
3.How can an aircraft create a sonic boom
A.By its flight height. B.By its flying path.
C.By its large size. D.By its flying speed.
4.What do we know from the last paragraph
A.Sonic booms might cause hearing problems.
B.A tiny sonic boom can easily break a window.
C.It is common to hear sonic booms on the street.
D.Sonic booms are used to fight enemies during wartime.
5.What is the best title of the passage
A.Boom from airplanes B.Sounds in nature
C.Harmful sounds around us D.Loud noise in the air—sonic boom

Look at the picture. A girl is spinning a hula hoop, one of the most famous toys in history.
Hula hoops can date back to 500 BC as a form of cultural activity or exercise. But we didn’t fully
understand how hula hoop stays up or why some people are naturally good at it until recently.
In 2024, a team from New York University made progress. They used 3D-printed robots of
different shapes, like cylinders and hourglasses (圆筒和沙漏). Engines made these robots spin
hula hoops. By recording the movements with high-speed cameras and studying them with
software, scientists found two key points.
First, for stable (稳定的) spinning, the hoop must start spinning fast enough in the same
direction as the robot’s body. The centrifugal force and friction (离心力和摩擦力) work together
to keep the hoop stable. Second, robots with hourglass shapes were best at keeping the hoop up for
a long time. Their “hips” push up the hoop, and their “curved waist” holds it in place.
These findings suggest that people with hourglass shapes may be natural hoopers. But don’t
worry. “Real humans aren’t robots. Anyone can learn with practice!” says Leif Ristroph, one of
the scientists.
Before the research, considering hula hoop’s long history, people might think hula hoops
had already been studied to death. But the findings not only help to explain the familiar but poorly
understood activity but may also point to some possible uses in life.

Are you always looking at your mobile phone while you’re walking or studying Are you
unwilling to put it down when you go to bed Tired of a life controlled by mobile phones, many
young people are trying to keep away from the phones.
That’s why mobile phone isolation box is becoming popular. Users simply put their mobile
phone in the box and set a time lock (锁) to stop themselves from getting it. Han Yue was one of
the users. She bought the box so she was preparing for a very important exam. She thought highly
of it and said it was certainly worthwhile.
Lin Tiangi, a student at Beijing Technology and Business University, brought an isolation
box, too. She stuck several eye-catching stickers (贴纸) on the box, which read “God helps those
who help themselves” “The harder you work, the luckier you are” and so on. “The boxes remind
me that I must face reality (现实),” Lin says.
However, Liang Wenyu, another college student, says it is funny to use a box to cut off
mobile phone use. “It is completely meaningless. No matter how useful the isolation box is, you
might lock yourself up as well,” he says. “I can understand why they put those boxes on the box—
because they have very poor self-discipline (自律). How about simply going back your time
Self-disciplined people are sure to succeed without such tricks,” added Liang.

A.Good food. B.Good jobs. C.Good health. D.Nice things.
7.What can bring enjoyment according to the examples in the passage
A.Eating food. B.Reading a book.
C.Buying things. D.Watching TV.
8.How can we improve our life experience
A.By being lucky. B.By building enjoyment.
C.By eating delicious food. D.By avoiding goals.
9.What does the underlined word “leans on” probably mean in the passage
A.Depends on. B.Gives in. C.Turns down. D.Gets over.
10.What is the best title of the passage
A.The Secret of Happiness B.Pleasure and Enjoyment
C.How to Achieve Enjoyment D.The Importance of Pleasure

B.To help explain how a sonic boom happens.
C.To prove that air can move quickly like water.
D.To explain how to tell whether an object is moving fast.
3.How can an aircraft create a sonic boom
A.By its flight height. B.By its flying path.
C.By its large size. D.By its flying speed.
4.What do we know from the last paragraph
A.Sonic booms might cause hearing problems.
B.A tiny sonic boom can easily break a window.
C.It is common to hear sonic booms on the street.
D.Sonic booms are used to fight enemies during wartime.

1.What is mentioned about hula hoops in paragraph 1
A.The practice skills. B.The cultural importance.
C.The famous inventor. D.The unanswered questions.
2.What is the main idea of paragraph 2

A. B. C. D.
4.What can we tell from Leif’s words
A.Robots can help people play hula hoops better.
B.Hula hoop movement can be done with practice.
C.Humans are different from robots in doing sports.
D.People with hourglass shapes do well in hula hoops.
5.What will probably be discussed in the following paragraphs
