The robotics club was taking part in the National Robotics Competition at the Children’s Science Centre. Charlie quickly put their robot into a box. Paul took the box, and the three of them got on the bus.
There were many school groups at the science centre. Charlie started to feel nervous. Paul found their school’s table and put down their box. As they set up the robot, Ruby suddenly realized that one of the robot’s arms was missing. The three of them looked in the box again but they couldn’t find it. “Charlie, I think you left it in school! What are we going to do ” Ruby cried. “I’m sorry,” Charlie said quietly. Red is more than just a colour. It is also a symbol of traditional Chinese culture. When it comes to red, we have to mention a great dynasty in our history — the Tang Dynasty.
Most women in the world have fallen in love with red makeup since ancient times, but the women of the Tang Dynasty were the only ones who took the preference for red makeup to the extreme (极致). The women of the Tang Dynasty were all beauty makeup masters. Many great makeup styles appeared. After thousands of years, the confidence of women in the age of red makeup can still be seen today.
If we go beyond the times and come back to the red colour itself, we’ll find that in our traditional culture, bright red is always a necessary and important colour in wedding ceremonies. “Wearing red”, also known as “wearing coloured silk”, as a custom full of the meaning of good luck, is not only an important custom in the history of ancient Chinese marriage ceremonies but also a custom that the ancients would follow on many important events.
Besides, our ancestor would also “wear red” on important events such as when the top scholars (学者) were announced as the “first” on the imperial examination (科举考试) rankings. As the poem says, “On a fine spring day, on a galloping horse, one riding high could enjoy all flowers in Chang’an in one day.” With the great joy of “becoming famous overnight”, “wearing red” became one of the necessary parts of ceremony for them.
We’ve got so many colours on the land but the Chinese people’s love for red is deep into the bone. Especially wherever our national flag is, there is a lighthouse of belief. If belief has a colour, it must be the Chinese red. We believe that every Chinese has a touch of proud Chinese red in his heart.

A. Running fast. B. Walking happily. C. Sitting straight. D. Standing proudly.
33. How many examples are given to show the custom of wearing red
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
34. What is the meaning of “Chinese red” today
A. It stands for belief, pride, and cultural character.
B. It just stands for the colour of the national flag.
C. It shows people’s love for ancient makeup styles.
D. It is more popular for weddings than other events.
35. In which part of the magazine can you find the text
A. Travel. B. Nature. C. Culture. D. Science.

A new study suggests that roosters can recognize (认出) themselves in a mirror.
The list of animals who can recognize themselves in a mirror isn’t long. The skill has mainly been found in animals with large brains, like dolphins, chimpanzees and elephants. Until recently, among all birds, only roosters had shown this special skill.
Scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany recently ran the “mark test” on roosters. During the test, they put a pink triangle on the chest of a rooster and it was allowed to look in a mirror. If the rooster seems to pay attention to the mark, scientists believe the rooster has recognized itself. However, when the rooster looked in a mirror, they didn’t seem to notice the mark. The scientists needed a new way to test whether the roosters could recognize themselves.
When there’s danger — like a hawk (鹰) flying above — roosters make loud calls to warn nearby chickens. But roosters only make the cries if other chickens can hear them. If they’re alone, they remain quiet so the hawk won’t see them. The scientists realized that they could use the shadow (影子) of a hawk to test whether or not the roosters thought they were alone — even when they could see “another” chicken in a mirror.
First, the scientists let the roosters spend time getting used to being in a closed space and having a mirror around. Then, they ran several tests by making a hawk shadow appear above a rooster and watching how it reacted (回应). When there was no mirror, the roosters reacted as usual. But when there was a mirror around the closed space, the rooster wasn’t fooled into thinking there was another rooster. It remained silent although it saw the hawk shadow. It did this even if there was a rooster hidden behind the mirror.
The scientists say the results show that the roosters knew they were seeing themselves in the mirror, and not other roosters. The scientists believe their finding will encourage other scientists to look for better ways of testing self - recognition in animals.
36. What is the purpose of “mark test”
A. To test if a rooster can see different shapes. B. To check if a rooster recognizes itself.
C. To find out how a rooster reacts to a hawk. D. To report how a rooster communicates.
37. Where did the scientists get the inspiration for the hawk shadow test
A. The loud calls of roosters. B. The way the rooster looks in the mirror.
C. The shadows of roosters. D. The behavior when roosters face danger.
38. What is the main idea of paragraph 5
A. The reason why roosters remained silent. B. The process of testing roosters.
C. The danger to roosters from the hawk. D. The difficulty in studying roosters.
39. What can we learn from the hawk shadow test
A. Roosters remain quiet when they think they are alone.
B. Roosters make calls only when they see a real hawk.
C. Roosters think there’s another rooster if there’s a mirror around.
D. Roosters can’t tell the difference between shadows and real hawks.
40. What is the suitable title of the passage
A. The hunting behavior of hawks. B. The social behavior of roosters.
C. The study of roosters’ self - recognition. D. The communication method of animals.
第二节 阅读七选五(共 5 个小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever read a story that you couldn’t put down
A good story needs three things: characters, a setting, and a plot (情节). The characters are the people or animals that do things in your story. 41 The plot is the action that moves your story forward.
Characters do things to move the plot forward. Where the story is set needs to make sense for both the characters and the plot. The plot involves both the characters and the setting. 42
Let’s imagine your character is an artist who loved to paint. She lived and worked in her studio in a city in the present day. But she realized her paints were missing and she searched for them. Maybe her paints were in her studio the whole time, but that would end the story too quickly with no “conflict (冲突)”.
Instead, let’s say someone stole her paints. She had to find out who that person was. 43 Now we have conflict — that’s when two or more characters want or need different things. Why did the artist’s sister steal her paints Was this the first time Did the two sisters always fight Through this plot, we can tell many different kinds of stories.
44 First, writing a story means making a promise to the reader that it will make sense. Do not break that promise. It wouldn’t make sense if you suddenly introduced magic or robots because we already said that the story takes place in the present day.
45 Every story has some truth in it, even if it isn’t actually true. In our example above, even though the two sisters aren’t real, the idea that sisters sometimes fight is very true.
And if your story is good enough, you can get it published! It is an amazing feeling to see your story in print.
A. If you keep writing, you’ll finally make it. B. It turned out the person was the artist’s sister. C. The setting is where and when your story takes place. D. These three things work together to make a good story. E. Every story should have a clear beginning, middle and end. F. Second, just because your story is made up doesn’t mean it’s a lie. G. There are two important things to remember about writing stories.
