Music of the world
With the song Apologize, US band OneRepublic became one of the hottest rock bands in the world in 2007. And their new song, Counting Stars, topped the UK singles charts soon after it came out in March this year.
People say they are successful because of their special music style: mixing rock with R&B and hip-hop.
But they don’t think so.
“We’re no respecter of music style,” said lead singer Ryan Tedder. “For 10 years, we’ve been trying to define our music. But in the music world with so many styles, we found ourselves unique. And we are glad with that.”
The band was set up in 2002. Their unique style draws fans of pop, rock and other music styles. The magazine Rolling Stone describes them as “the band that brings the future of music”.
It seems everybody likes their music. Maybe it’s because their music comes from their experience of traveling, said Drew Brown, the guitarist.
“We are inspired by the traveling that we get to do and the different ways of life and culture that we get to experience,” Brown told NST News.
For example, to prepare for the latest album, Native, the band traveled to Paris, London and many other places. They hope to create a kind of music that the whole world understands.
And now, they have brought their music to China. They had concerts in Shanghai and Beijing early this month.
“Chinese fans are really enthusiastic. I hope they enjoyed the concert from ears to souls,” said Tedder.

There are fantasy stories set in worlds of fairies and wizards, and there are ones set in the real world. Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island is the latter, a tale about a young person like you or your classmates. It takes place in a world like yours, but the most exciting things happen. You don’t always need magic to tell a magical story!
Jim Hawkins, an English boy, first learns about treasure hidden on an island by the pirate Captain Flint. He then gets the chance to join a voyage with Captain Smollett in hopes of finding the treasure.
One of the crew members is a man called “Long” John Silver. Jim finds out that the one-legged John is a pirate who knows about the treasure and wants it for himself. Silver persuades others on the ship to join him in a mutiny.
Jim tells Captain Smollett about Silver. Once on the island, Jim sees just how dangerous Silver is as he watches Silver murder another pirate.
While wandering the island, Jim meets a half-mad soul named Ben Gunn. When Captain Flint left his treasure behind, he also left Ben.
Silver gets control over the expedition but the other pirates turn on him, just as Silver turned on Captain Smollett. Silver and Jim, both captives now, have to work together if they want to escape.
Although he is a criminal, Silver shows he can also be brave. He is not entirely evil, but has a mixture of both good and evil qualities.
Jim learns from the mission that people will kill and betray their friends for money. But he also understands that people are sometimes more than they seem to be on the surface.

Remember honest Zhou
He is known as the father of modern Chinese literature. But his influence has gone beyond literature to the world of ideas, arts and politics. No wonder Chairman Mao Zedong once called him “the sage of modern China”.
Oct 19 is the 80th anniversary of the death of Zhou Shuren, commonly known for his pen name Lu Xun. Today his writing is still widely read and several of his stories and essays are included in China’s public school curriculum.
As one of the leaders of the New Culture Movement (1915-1923), Lu Xun is known for making honest comments on Chinese institutions, culture and customs.
Take the story From Baicao Garden to Sanwei Study for example. The writer wrote about his youth from his playground Baicao Garden to his school the Sanwei Study, where a respected teacher instructed him in Chinese classics. The name “sanwei”, which translates as “three flavors”, refers to comparisons of different types of reading to different types of foodstuffs. Confucian classics are like rice. History books are like dishes. And literature is like sauce and seasoning.
It was in this strict traditional learning environment that he started to form a solid understanding of Chinese feudal society.
So when he wrote his first short story, A Madman’s Diary, he declared war against the broken society. The story made a huge splash in China’s literary world when it was published in 1918 for being among the first to use colloquial language together with the hard-to-read classical language that “serious” authors were meant to write in at the time. The story also turned heads for its extremely critical take on the downside of Chinese tradition, which Zhou compared to cannibalism.
Three years later, another important story, The True Story of Ah Q, was published. It saw Lu Xun look at the Chinese psyche at the time. The writer criticized it through Ah Q, a peasant who always considers himself superior to others even as he is humiliated and finally executed in the end. This characterization was on-the-nose enough that the phrase “the Ah Q spirit” is widely used even today.
“In all of Chinese literature, Lu Xun is … a sharp observer of the era he lived through, and a remaker of language and form,” commented The Guardian newspaper.
(1). ________ called Lu Xun “the sage of modern China”.
A.Mao Zedong B.Zhou Shuren C.Guo Moruo D.Mo Yan
(2). What are history books like according to Lu Xun
A.They are like rice. B.They are like dishes.
C.They are like sauce. D.They are seasoning.
(3). Ah Q represents ________.
A.the Chinese grass-root people during the feudal period
B.Lu Xun
C.nobles during the feudal period
D.royals during the feudal period

(5). What’s the passage mainly about
A.Lu Xun—the sage of modern China.
B.How to write stories.
C.Some influential stories.

Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the world’s most-loved composers, is famous for his nine symphonies (交响乐). Before he died in 1827, he began a new symphony, but never finished it. He only left behind some notes about the piece and a few “sketches” — short bits of written music.
In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. Their goal was to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday. The team didn’t just want to complete the symphony, they wanted to come as close as possible to producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write.
The team decided to use artificial intelligence (AI人工智能) to help finish the symphony. To train an AI, they turned every piece of Beethoven’s music to a form the computer could understand. By doing this, the AI could look for patterns (模式) in the way Beethoven wrote. They also studied Beethoven’s notes and sketches to work out where in the symphony he planned to use each little bit of music.
In an early test, the team took a few minutes of music created by the AI seed on Beethoven’s sketches, and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians and reporters. No one could tell which parts had been written by Beethoven and which parts were made up by the AI.
Finally, the AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits to a symphony. It took over two years, but the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony — not simply a melody (乐曲), but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra (管弦乐队). On the night of October 9th, 2021, the piece was performed for the first time ever by the Beethoven Orchestra in Bonn, Germany.
So Beethoven now has a 10th Symphony. And though Beethoven didn’t write it all, the team feels sure that the music is very much like what he might be written, if he’d had the chance.
What was the team’s goal
What did the team do to train an AI
What was the result of the team’s early test
How long did it take the team to complete the 10th Symphony
What do you think of the team’s work Why do you think so

As we all know, the Earth is in trouble! It is very important for us to build a green life. But how should we protect the Earth
Chinese government has taken action to protect our earth. For example, lots of factories that can cause serious pollution have been shut down. And we have started to use the sun and wind as new energy. We students can also do something to protect our earth. When we leave a room, we’d better turn off the lights. It’s a good behavior to turn off the tap when we brush our teeth. Going shopping with a cloth bag is also a good way.
It’s everyone’s duty to love and protect the environment. I believe small changes can make a big difference to the world.
