That autumn, Slat, then 17, decided to study plastic pollution as part of a high school project. Soon, Slat learned that no one had yet thought of useful ways to clean up all the rubbish. Most people wanted to “fish” up the plastic using ships with nets, which might need more than 1,000 years, cost too much, and leave sea life along with the rubbish.
Slat decided to avoid these problems: a solar-powered (太阳能) system using a moving plastic tube (管子) which will go around the rubbish and collect it. Wind and waves will push the rubbish to the tube. A ship will pick up the rubbish and take it back to the land.

The Horsetail Fall is one of Yosemite National Park’s most amazing scenery. Around the second week of February, the setting sun hits the Horsetail Fall at just the right angle to light the upper reaches of the fall. When conditions are right, the Horsetail Fall becomes orange and red at sunset. It is like red-hot lava pouring down from the top of the El Capitan, so it got the name “firefall”.
The firefall is a perfect match of the weather, the fall, the time and the watching place. It usually appears on dry, warm and cloudless days. There must be enough flowing water to make a firefall. There should also be enough snow on the mountain top, and it turns into water in warm afternoon.
The sun goes to the best place before the fall in late February. The best time to watch the fall is 5 to 15 minutes before the sunset. Only at this time can visitors see the firefall. The El Capitan Picnic Area is the best place to watch, because it is close to the fall and is perfect to set up cameras and tents.
Every year in February, thousands of photographers come to watch the firefall. The spectacle may appear just minutes before sunset, so people have to come hours earlier to get a right place to set their cameras in time. “I’m just saying that the Yosemite firefall is something you don't want to miss during the winter,” said Kate Moore, a traveller and lead content creator for a travel website.

This is a story from a meeting held by some people and two things in nature. We call it the Four-Sided Talk. Let’s “listen to” everyone carefully and find out what they think.
An old tree: I am thousands of years old, but I have fewer and fewer friends. I’m afraid I will be cut someday. People cut down many trees to make paper and chopsticks. Soon there will be no trees to make air and to protect people from floods. Mother nature is making many disasters to teach people a lesson.
The river: What the old tree said is right. I not only make the earth more beautiful, but provide the clean water for people and animals. Now I’m sad because people put waste into me, which kills many animals and plants that drink my water. Some people drink this kind of water and get sick, too.
People: We have lived on the earth since ancient times. The earth is our home. We have done some harm to our home! From now on, we should make full use of the resources on the earth and protect the earth. Let’s try our best!
The United Nations: We know a little about the environmental problems. Hearing what all of you said, we’ve decided to protect the earth and love the earth. We’ve also made the June 5th World Environment Day.

Wang Wei (701-761), often called the “Poet Buddha”, was a famous Chinese poet, painter, and government official during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Born into a high family, he passed a difficult government exam at age 20 and worked for the emperor for many years.
Wang Wei is best known for his simple, peaceful poems about nature. His works often describe quiet scenes of mountains, rivers, and mist with few people. Experts (专家) say his poems show the beauty of the world while making readers think about what’s truly real.
But he wasn’t just an amazing poet; he was also a talented painter. He used ink and water in soft colours to create gentle, poetic pictures of nature. It was a new style of painting Chinese landscapes. Su Shi of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) once said that Wang Wei “had painting in his poetry” and “poetry in his painting”.
His most famous work, Wang River Collection, contains poems about traveling with his friend Pei Di. These poems have influenced writers for centuries, including modern writers who created new works based on his ideas. One poem called Weicheng Qu became a famous song called Three Repetitions on the Yangguan Tune, usually played on the guqin, an instrument Wang Wei probably played.
Scholars (学者) still study his poems today. A famous book called 19 Ways of Looking at Wang Wei examines different translations of his short poem Deer Park, showing how his simple words can have many meanings. Wang Wei’s works remain important because they help people see nature’s quiet beauty and think deeply about life.

For thousands of years, humans have been writing by hand to communicate, keep records, and express their ideas and feelings. Handwriting continues to live even with the invention of the typewriter and computer. It especially holds great importance in school. In some exams, students’ handwriting is even graded. People have different ideas about this.
Agree If students are being graded on their handwriting, they will take this important skill seriously. Even if they have poor handwriting to start with, it can be improved with practice. Grading will only push them to do better and feel proud of their progress. Regular handwriting practice is good for the brain. Writing makes different parts of the brain start working at the same time, which helps build a powerful brain. Besides, it develops students’ thinking skills like planning and organizing. It also improves their ability to focus. The value of handwriting goes beyond school. Writing is part of students’ daily lives. They take notes in class, write a birthday card, or leave a message. Beautiful handwriting adds a touch of art and warmth to what they write, making these daily experience more enjoyable. Disagree●We live in a digital world. We use keyboards and other digital tools more and more. Students often show their work online. Since the perfect handwriting is no longer important, why give students the pressure of one more grade to worry about ●It is unfair because it pays no attention to the differences in students’ natural abilities. Some students have less-developed fine-motor (精细动作) skills. They have trouble writing well. They shouldn’t be asked to write as beautifully as those who have better fine-motor skills. ●Students should be mainly graded on the ideas they express. What they think is much more important than the way they write. A student with great thinking ability shouldn’t be graded low just because of his poor handwriting. Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso had poor handwriting, but look at their great achievements.
There is no clear right or wrong answer to whether students’ handwriting should be graded. Schools can decide whether to do it according to different teaching goals and students’ needs.

The earthquake that hit San Francisco on April 18,1906 shook down hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of walls and chimneys (烟囱). But the following fire burned up hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of buildings and homes. Never before in history has a city been so completely destroyed. San Francisco is gone. The factories, the great stores and newspaper buildings, the hotels and the great houses of the rich are all gone.
On Wednesday morning at a quarter past five came the earthquake. A moment later, the disaster was a fact. South of Market Street, in the working-class neighborhoods and in the factories, fires started. Within an hour of the first quake, the smoke could be seen 100 miles away. The sun was red in the dark sky. There was no stopping the fires. The firefighters to whom the task was given did their best but there was no way to organize or communicate. The railway tracks were now useIess and there was no water in water pipes. All of the ways man had made to keep the city safe were gone in the 30 seconds when the earth moved.
By Wednesday afternoon, half the heart of the city was gone. At that time, I watched the disaster from a ship on the bay (海湾). Out at sea it was calm. No wind came up. Yet strong winds blew upon the unlucky city from every direction, the fire spread quickly. Soon, many buildings were gone.
Wednesday night saw the destruction of the very heart of the city. Man himself had to make ruins of some of the city’s best buildings so that they would not be a danger to those on the streets. Tens of thousands of who had lost their homes left the city to look for shelter from the fires. Some were dressed only in blankets and carried the things that they had been able to rescue from the fires. But there were no fights and no pushing. Somehow this worst of disasters brought out the best in the survivors. Never in all of San Francisco’s history were her people so kind as on this night of terror.

Asking for advice is not so easy. In a recent study, 74 percent of people said they were afraid to ask for advice. But people who ask for advice are more likely to succeed at a task. So how do you ask for advice Here are some ways for you.
Firstly, look for the best person to give you advice. It might be easy to ask all your friends on social media for advice at once, but will you value all the advice equally (同等地). Probably not. It might be better to choose one or two people whose opinions you value most. It’s a perfect idea for you to find the perfect person to ask for advice from. People who have experience in the topic you’re asking about are the best.
Secondly, provide enough information clearly. For example, imagine you can’t decide how to organize a club activity. When you ask for advice about it, you should mention the topic, the place and the time. You should also consider when to ask. If your questions require a lot of thoughts, you should ask the person for advice when he or she is clear-headed.
Thirdly, be specific (具体的) when you ask questions. Imagine you want to own a business someday. Should you ask a business owner, “What advice do you have for me ” No, because it’s not specific enough. Instead, try asking, “What college classes did you find helpful for starting a business ”
Fourthly, sometimes you may need to ask for a second opinion. If you can’t solve your problem by following the first person’s advice, why not ask someone else who may think differently The key is: Don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

There’s a new AI robot: ChatGPT. The tool is an AI chatbot system. OpenAI brought it to the public in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve. ChatGPT remembers the main information of your dialogue, using previous (先前的) questions and answers to provide its replies. It gets the answers from a large amount of information on the Internet.
You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to replace al humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound very authoritative (权威的).
①ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research period. But when too many people visit its site, it overloads and can’t deal with what you ask for. It just means you should try visiting the site at a later time when there are fewer people. ②如果你不想等待,有一个适合你的选择。And this service does come at a cost of $20 monthly.
However ChatGPT can’t replace Google at present. ChatGPT is a robot that provides replies to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge because of its programming, but Google has unlimited knowledge which is renewed every day.
What can people ask ChatGPT
How long is ChatGPT known by people
Which would you like to use, ChatGPT or Google Why

Dear Mum,
①Today is my birthday. I’m writing to you because I want you to know how much your daughter loves you.
②A few days ago, we learned an English poem named Mom Knows Best. I strongly felt mother’s love between the lines! In class, Miss Li recalled what her mum had done for her. But she felt really regretful because she had no chance to say “I love you” to her mum, for her mother had passed away. This made me think a lot. It seems that I’ve never told you “I love you”, so I can’t wait to write the letter.
③I still remember that you held my hand and counted steps with me as we walked along. In our small flat, you read books while I played with my toys on the bed nearby. In cool autumns, we took many walks along the street, chatting and laughing together. My childhood was filled with these warm memories.
④Time flies and so much has happened, but you were always by my side. When I won the prize, you smiled and said you were proud of me. When I failed my exam, you encouraged me and said that everything would be fine. Your words helped me to face all my difficulties.

Nowadays, artificial intelligence (人工智能) tools like DeepSeek are becoming very popular. They bring big changes to our life, especially in learning and working.
DeepSeek has great technology. For example, its language models can answer lots of different questions well. In learning, students can use it to get more knowledge. When they have difficult problems in subjects like history, math or science, they can ask DeepSeek for help. It’s just like having a helpful teacher all the time. At work, it makes employees (雇员) better at analyzing data (数据分析). Marketers can use it to guess what will happen in the market, and writers can find ideas from it to write better things.
But while DeepSeek gives us so much convenience, there are also problems. Some students depend too much on it and just copy the answers it gives. This is really wrong. In fact, with the growth of AI, we need to focus more on making our creativity better. In the future, jobs that need people to do the same thing over and over again will be taken by AI. Only those who are really creative can do well. For example, in art design, designers should use their own ideas to make great works instead of just using what AI makes. In science, researchers need to think of new ideas to find out things we don’t know.
So we should see AI as a useful tool, not something that does our thinking for us. We must work on growing our creativity by keeping learning and practicing to get ready for the future.

In recent years, AI has become a useful tool in our study, especially in learning English.
AI provides different learning apps. For example, some apps can listen to our pronunciation and point out mistakes quickly. They tell us how to move our mouths and tongues (舌头) to make the right sound, just like a patient teacher. There are also apps that offer personalized reading materials. If we like stories, it will offer interesting English stories at our level. After reading, we can answer some simple questions to check our understanding.
Another great use of AI is in writing. When we write an English writing and enter it into an AI writing helper, it can correct grammar mistakes and give suggestions on better words or sentences. It helps us learn how to express our ideas more clearly. For example, if we always use the same simple words, it will show us some other words with richer meanings to make our writing more vivid (生动).
Moreover, AI can create an immersive (沉浸式的) language environment. Through virtual (虚拟的) conversations with AI characters, we can practice speaking English freely. We can talk about our daily life, hobbies, or even discuss a movie we watched. The AI will respond (回应) and keep the conversation going.
All in all, AI is really helpful in our English learning. It makes learning more interesting and effective (有效) . But we should also remember that it is just a tool. We still need to work hard and practice more to truly master the English language. With the right use of Al, we can open a new door to the wonderful world of English learning.

After finishing his last delivery (送货), truck driver Zhou Qiang took Flight CZ8233 back home for Spring Festival celebrations. He was excited because it was his first time flying on China’s own C919 airplane.
Once on the plane, he couldn’t stop taking pictures to share with his family later. “The seats are really comfortable. 1 I can even cross them,” Zhou said. The flight from Guangzhou to Chengdu cut his travel time from at least seven hours by train to just two and a half hours this year.
2 In the past, many workers rode motorcycles home in the cold, but now more people choose high-speed trains or planes. This is a big difference from about ten years ago when it was common to see workers riding motorcycles from cities like Guangzhou to their hometowns in Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, or Sichuan.
Huang Xiaoyan and her husband were among those who used to ride motorcycles home. They spent 30 hours traveling from Foshan in Guangdong to their village in Guangxi. “It was freezing, especially when it rained. The roads were slippery (湿滑的) and dangerous,” Huang remembered. 3
In 2013, 1.1 million motorcycle trips were recorded during the Spring Festival travel season in Guangdong. But after 2014, the number started to drop as high-speed trains became more common, connecting Guangdong with places like Guizhou and Guangxi. This year, railways are expected to handle (应付) over 510 million passenger trips, an increase of 5.5% from last year. 4
Now fewer people are willing to ride motorcycles home. Over the past three years, Huang and her brother have driven home in his car. “Almost no one I know rides motorcycles home anymore,” Huang added.
A. And there’s lots of space for my legs.
B. And she said the journey was very difficult.
C. Road trips are also expected to reach 7.2 billion.
D. During the festival, there’s a big travel rush in China.
E. Zhou noticed how things have changed over the years.

In a small village, a very sick girl named Maggie, was found by the roadside. The villagers felt pity for the poor child.
“Take her to the poorhouse,” one villager suggested.
“The poorhouse is a sad place for a sick and helpless child,” replied another.
They discussed for a while, but still no one was willing to take her.
Finally, Joe Thompson, a kind man, couldn’t leave Maggie behind. He carried her home gently.
As he got home, his ill-tempered (易怒的) wife, Jane, angrily demanded, “Why did you bring her here ”
“She’s too weak and helpless,” Joe explained. “She must been seen first by the guardians (管理人) tomorrow and the guardians will decide her future.”
“Why not get the whole thing off your hands tonight ”
“Keep this poor child for a single night, please,” begged Joe, his voice shaking, tears hidden. Jane didn’t answer, but a soft feeling rose in her heart.
“Be kind to her,” said Joe. “Think of the loneliness and pain in her coming life.” Jane went quietly into the room where Maggie was in. Joe didn’t follow. Fostering (暂时抚养) a pet takes a special person. This person has to have a big heart and be willing to love and care for a pet even though they know they will have to say goodbye one day.
In January 2013, I had three dogs of my own and was already fostering my first dog, Rockstar, from our local shelter (收容所), BARCS. The shelter was running out of space, so I decided to take in another foster dog. That’s when I met Betsy.
Betsy had been at the shelter since November 2012 and had come in with her puppies (幼犬) after being attacked by another dog. Her puppies were adopted (领养). She was still waiting for her forever home. Even though five families showed interest in her, none of the adoptions worked out.
Betsy was a friendly dog, enjoying playtime with others, especially with her broken basketball toy. The day I took her home, she seemed to smile the entire car ride. Betsy bonded (建立亲密关系) quickly with my family, especially my son. 他们喜欢在一起玩球。Betsy was full of energy and brought so much joy to our home with her love for life.
At the same time, we started selling her. Within two weeks, Jason, who had lost one of his dogs, fell in love with her picture. He met Betsy and sealed the deal (达成协议). It was a perfect match. A week later, he took her home.
Betsy has been a wonderful addition (新成员) to his family. She gets along well with Jason’s other dogs and even his cat. Tanghulu, a beloved traditional Chinese snack, has a fascinating origin. It's said that during the Song Dynasty, a wife of Emperor Guangzong of Song was seriously ill. A doctor asked her to eat hawthorns(山楂) on bamboo sticks boiled in syrup(糖浆). Surprisingly, the wife got better. This method then spread among the people, giving birth to the tanghulu we know today.

Have you ever heard “You never get a second chance to make a first impression (印象)” It may sound like an unusual piece of advice, but it is true—the first impression someone has of you when meeting you for the first time will probably influence how that person treats you or reacts to you in the future.
What is even more interesting is that the brain takes in all the information to create that first impression in about three seconds. When you meet someone for the first time, by the time you have told your name or shaken hands, the other person has already had an opinion about the kind of person you are.
So how do you make a good first impression All things grown-ups tell you, such as being polite and being well-dressed, are very important.
However, the most important tool for making a good first impression is your face. Smiling, being active, and looking like you are happy will almost always leave a positive (积极的) impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Most people, generally speaking, are ready to smile back when they are smiled at.
What’s more, smiling and being in a positive mood help you to know and get a better understanding of new things. This means that you can possibly be friendlier to people you do not know and be more creative and able to solve problems more quickly.
So, if you ever need a reason to be happy, think about the wonderful people you might meet and impress them with a cheerful smile.
The First Impression does count

Glass, clear but strong, is all around us.
By 3500 BC, people already used crushed quartz(石英)to make glass in ancient Egypt, and the science behind glass-making hasn't changed much since then. The modern glass-making process includes heating tiny quartz to a very high temperature, about 1760℃. When molten(溶解的)glass cools, it is changed into something very soft and even can run like water. Then pour it into molds(模具)to make bottles or cups. Unusual glass of special shapes, like glass artworks, is made by blowing air into molten glass.
Here are some fun facts about glass.
Natural glass
Some glass is naturally formed by the heat of volcanoes. Ancient people used this kind of glass to make knives and jewelry(珠宝)。
Recycled glass
Glass can be recycled repeatedly without losing quality, and it's one of the easiest materials to reuse. It is environmentally friendly because it does not easily change chemically in the natural environment.
Windshields (挡风玻璃)
Car windshields are easily broken and cause harm in an accident. The car-maker Henry Ford himself was hurt by broken glass in an accident and was encouraged to find something better. In 1919, Ford's company was among the first to improve the quality of windshields.
Today, lots of daily items are made of glass. Whether it's used in the process of building things or to make works of art, glass is an unusual material!

Have you ever been embarrassed because you forgot something important Perhaps you've had experiences like these. You began to introduce the guest speaker to the audience, but then paused(暂停) in horror. You had forgotten her name. You hid jewelry(珠宝) when you went on vacation. When you came back, you couldn't remember where you'd put it.
Most people have something in common. They’re unaware of a simple but important fact: Memory can be developed. If you just accept that fact, the following will show you how to develop memory.
Relax. If you worry about remembering something, you'll forget it. Relaxing will enhance your awareness and ability to concentrate. Take deep breaths and tell yourself that you have all the time in the world to remember.
Avoid being negative. If you keep telling yourself that your memory is bad, your mind will come to believe it and you won’t remember things. When you forget something, don’t say, “Oh, I need to have my brain rewired(重新接线).”
To improve your memory, you’ll need to be active. Look for opportunities to exercise your memory. For example, if you’re learning a language, try to actively remember irregular verbs.
You can also make links between what you're trying to remember and things you already know. For example, if you need to catch a plane at 2:00 p.m., you can imagine a plane in your mind and notice that it has two wings.
How to Develop Memory
Experiences You forgot the name of the guest speaker.
You forget the place where you hid your jewelry.
①________ Memory can be developed.
Ways You should be②________, and try to remember where it is.
You should avoid ③________ If not, you will forget things easily.

Traditional Chinese painting (guohua) is a traditional Chinese painting form. It's usually painted on silk or paper with a brush dipped in black ink or colored paint. Painters usually create works about characters, landscapes (风景), flowers and birds.
There are two main skills in Chinese painting. One is gongbi, drawing details (细节) in fine strokes (笔画) with rich colors. It's often used to draw people or animals. The other is xieyi, drawing in rough(粗糙的) strokes and light colors. An artist could freely show his feelings through this skill. Xieyi is often used in landscape paintings.
From the Han to Tang dynasties, artists painted many detailed and beautiful pictures of the emperors’ family. By the Sui and Tang dynasties, the landscape painting had already built itself as an independent form of art. These paintings were less detailed and full of the artists' personal understanding of the subjects.
The time from the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms to the Northern Song Dynasty is known as the “Golden Age of Chinese Landscape Painting”. Using bold(黑体的) strokes and black lines, artists showed rolling hills, rivers and stones. During the Song Dynasty, painters began adding poetry and calligraphy(书法) to their works to express their thoughts and feelings.
Color printing techniques were perfected during the Ming Dynasty, which was a great progress. This made it possible to create picture books on the skills of Chinese painting.
Western art started to come into China in the late 1800s and 1900s. Some painters, after studying abroad, returned to their homeland and joined the good of both cultures in their art.

If you want to become a fluent English speaker, maybe you should take some advice. There are four basic (基础的) skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first learn the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the strange words and so on. There is no need for you to care too much about grammar or try to understand all the strange words you come across. It’s enough if you can recognize (识别) the words when you see them next time. It would be better to prepare a notebook for yourself so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices. Besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only care about your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs (输入) in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening. For listening, you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy to understand. Or if you are good at listening, you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and you’d better take some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and reading will improve quickly, and you can be a fluent English speaker one day.

Why do we need water
The human body is about 60 percent water, and we need to drink lots of water to be healthy. We also need it for cooking, washing and doing many other things. We use water indirectly, too. Farmers use water to make the plants grow. A lot of water is used to produce the clothes we wear.

We all need water to stay alive, but over two billion people around the world live without safe water in their homes. That’s around 25 percent of the world’s population! Besides, climate (气候) change is making the water less and less.
What happens on World Water Day
On this day, many countries hold events to educate people about the importance of water and call on people to protect water resources. For example, a lot of groups organize activities like “Walk for Water”, where people walk four, eight or twelve kilometers each day in March, to see how they feel when they have to walk a long way to get their drinking water.

Some fishes have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field(磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we should simply turn off some lights at night. Everyone wants to be successful. The trouble is, most people want to be seen or known as successful more than they want to break the bad habits which may lead them to be unsuccessful. That’s because the lifestyle and rewards (回报) that come with success make everything seem easy.
People think that once they’re successful, they’ll have all the time in the world to do whatever they want. They think they’ll never have to work hard again. Because of this, they only see others’ success but miss the hard work, good habits and smart choices those people made along the way. As a result, they stay focused on all the wrong things, and never truly become successful.
One big reason people don’t succeed is that they talk a lot about their plans but seldom take real action. They believe they can work harder than others but never actually do the work. They also think that anyone who has achieved success was just lucky or knew someone. They do not face the truth: someone else is working hard and getting the rewards.
Another reason is that most of their time is spent on many fun activities like playing computer games or hanging out with friends, while successful people use their time to build good relationships, learn new skills, and work on projects that help them improve. They understand that for every hour they spend doing one thing, that’s an hour they cannot invest (投资) doing something else. Time is limited. If you use it all up, you can’t invest it to achieve success.
Many people want to be successful, but they care more about looking successful than doing the hard work needed. They think success means an easy life, forgetting it requires them to work hard, have good habits and 29 . 30 often make two mistakes. First, they talk but don’t act. 八、请阅读下列材料,用恰当的词块或句子完成读书报告。
“Hey! Did you hear what happened to Grace last weekend ” Helen asks Alice quietly.
With her eyes shining, Alice answers, “Haha, you know I did. Cindy told me yesterday.”
What are Helen and Cindy talking about I can tell you what they are saying doesn’t seem to be nice and true most of the time. In fact, Helen and Cindy are the same as most of the students here at Lingtong Middle School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip (八卦). I have noticed the effects of gossip.
An important negative (消极的) effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person we talk about. Usually, gossip spreads information about the relationships between a boy and a girl, the trouble at home, etc. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the more people the gossip attracts. Probably the worst type of gossip is of course the lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can bring some pains to people.
If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it That’s because another effect of gossip: the strong satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor (谣言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don’t.
Gossip also can have a third effect: It focuses on unwritten, unspoken rules about what people should do or not do. So the gossip we talk about will never show up in any student handbook.
The effects of gossip depends on different situations. So the next time when you want to spread the gossip, please think about whether it can affect others and how others will feel about it.

What do you think of the saying “Traveling ten thousand miles is better than reading ten thousand books.” Yes, this is the meaning of traveling. What has been learned from books is not enough after all. “Listening and reading” parts in the textbooks are not as good as “seeing and enjoying” for oneself in real life. So “going to the places in the textbooks” has something to do with “traveling while reading”. It works really well in students’ learning journey. It can not only make students more interested in learning, but also bring them a more lively and fresher experience.
Many people who love traveling will find that, in fact, what they see in their eyes is quite different from it in the pictures. The surprise they get when they are at the places and the beauty they see in their eyes can never be photoed by cameras. When they get there, they can feel the beautiful scenery that can’t be described in textbooks. And the real experience helps people in many ways. For example, students see, touch and feel the real world and get experience. This is very helpful to improve their writing abilities. No wonder some parents said, “Now when my children get home to write compositions, they can write as much as possible.”
There is a more important sense in this kind of traveling: to raise children’s love of our homes and country. There is no certain answer to the question of what kind of person a kid should become, but “having patriotism (爱国)” should be included in the answer.
