Centuries ago, the music of the Hítzaqv language echoed across a territory of rough islands, windswept beaches and thick forests. And then, the lands now in the western reaches of Canada fell quiet. Wars with neighbouring nations and disease brought the language to the edge of extinction. Today, only seventy fluent speakers remain. In some remote communities, where they don't have high schools, students are moved hundreds of kilometres away to larger cities to complete their studies, away from their families and their land. And so the loss continues on there.
Mamakwa is a H í zaqv, who was punished for speaking his mother tongue in school. Last year, he became the first provincial lawmaker to give a speech in Toronto legislature (议会).More than 1000 guests attended. “For community leaders who were there, it was very emotional for them. They had tears in their eyes — not because of what I said but because they were hearing their language in a place where it was never supposed to be spoken,” he said. Mamakwa is now focusing his attention on the remaining systems that reduce the ability to speak the first languages of the land.
Recently, there is a cheerful sense of munity efforts have taken on a renewed intensity. New resources have been poured into preservation and education, including compiling(汇编) vast information from the current fluent speakers. Therefore, Hítzaqv culture is being normalized for kids in a much deeper way now than it ever was before.
“You never want to lose the body of knowledge and language that you had as a people. But our language is also growing. There are words emerging and concepts emerging that are being included in our language to reflect the new reality we live in, and the new way that we live and work and be together. That's a good thing,” said Mamakwa.
24. What causes the collapsing H í zaqv language in some communities today
A. The poor educational quality. B. The enclosed geographic location.
C. The wars and natural disaster risks. D. The removal of children from their families.
25. What moved the community leaders in the Toronto legislature
A. Mamakwa was well treated at school.
B. They heard their language spoken there.
C. They were invited to the high-grade conference.
D. Mamakwa became the first provincial lawmaker.
26. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Efforts of current fluent speakers. B. Positive changes to the H í zaqv culture.
C. Cultural influences on kids' growth. D. Development of the H í zaqv language.
27. Which of the following might Mamakwa agree with
A. Language should be dynamic.
B. Language must be standardized.
C. Language is vital to national identity.
D. Language bridges the gap between people.
C
On the surface, it may not appear that Dr. Dolittle and artificial intelligence (AI) have much in common. One belongs in 1900s children's literature, while the other is firmly rooted in the 21st century. One is a physician turned vet(兽医) who can talk to animals, and the other a computerized technology that cannot. But the dream of speaking with animals may not be so fantastical anymore.
AI has already given us the ability to bark instructions at robots — could its potential be extended to the animal kingdom Could it help us understand the natural world and maybe one day allow us to“talk” to animals
The first difficulty in “translating” animal communication is understanding what that communication looks like. Human language is made up of verbal (口头的) and non-verbal cues, and animal communication is no different. Dogs wag their tails, for example, to convey a range of emotions. However, there is some debate as to whether this can be considered a“language”. According to Dr. Herzing, Research Director, Wild Dolphin Project, AI could help put it to bed.
“We currently don't know if animals have a language,” Herzing said. “But AI can help us look for language-like structures which might suggest animals have parts of a language.”
Scientists have been collecting sounds, calls and various animal vocalizations(发声) for decades. Research has shown that animal vocalizations carry many types of information from their identity to external objects. The hope is that AI models being developed can work like whatChatGPT does for human input, and turn those vocalizations into something more recognizable to humans.
With a better understanding of the animals around us, can we still justify practices that slaughter(屠宰) them This could have far-reaching influences, including for the treatment of animals in entertainment, research and agriculture. From a human perspective, there is also a lot we could learn, not just about ourselves but about animals and, maybe, other life forms.
28. Why does the author mention Dr. Dolittle in paragraph 1
A. To present a classic figure. B. To highlight literary-real gap.
C. To inspire animal talk fantasy. D. To indicate tech realizes fairytale.
29. What does“put it to bed” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Solve the problem. B. Suspend the research.
C. Continue the discussion. D. Reconsider the definition.
30. What are AI models expected to do
A. Interpret human language patterns.
B. Assess the general state of animals.
C. Make animal voices understandable.
D. Record major events in the natural world.
31. What will a better understanding of the animals lead to
A. A new life form exploration. B. The better animal welfare.
C. A deeper reflection on humans. D. The advanced slaughter technology.
D
Regenerative(再生的) design is not a new idea, but it has remained a less common approach compared to the wide spread of sustainable development. Found in many cultures, the modern concept of regenerative design is gaining attention. It offers a way to move from net-zero to net-positive urban growth, where cities actively restore and enhance the environment.
The“do no harm” approach is no longer enough and hasn't been for some time. What's more, the ongoing decline of the environment is compounded by multiple crises: widening inequality, social isolation, community displacements, to name a few. We are in the midst of a multi-crisis that requires a powerful systems approach to locally driven regenerative urbanism.
A typical example of regenerative urbanism in action can be seen in Calgary, the largest city in Alberta, Canada. Our work there focused on the University District, a former thinly populated area located on the edge of the University of Calgary campus. Through a comprehensive master planning process, this area was transformed into a diverse and walking-friendly community —— the first plan of its scale to achieve LEED-ND Platinum certification in Canada, an influential award for sustainable urban design. Notably, the University District development stopped decades of spread of suburban, creating a new“heart” in the city's northwest area. It also gathered enough people to support public transport, cultural facilities, and local economic growth.
The multi-crises we face in the 21st century are strikingly similar to the challenges that historical figures once tackled. For instance, during the cholera outbreaks in London between1846 and 1860, British physician John Snow mapped out the city's infrastructure (基础设施)and studied its impact on public health. His groundbreaking work led to the establishment of a new model in urban planning.
Learning from history, it's evident that comprehensive approaches are crucial for addressing rapid urbanization, ecological issues, and social inequality. Regenerative urbanism focuses on the long-term health of ecosystems and communities, promoting resilient (有复原力的) and sustainable cities for future generations.
32. How does regenerative design differ from the sustainable development
A. It strictly follows traditional cultural concepts.
B. It relies on simple solutions to complex crises.
C. It aims at net-positive urban environmental growth.
D. It focuses mainly on long-term ecological balance.
33. What is the significance of the University District project in Calgary
A. It marks a failure in sustainable urban design.
B. It shows the limitation of regenerative urbanism.
C. It indicates the necessity of suburban expansion.
D. It proves the practical value of regenerative design.
34. What can we learn from John Snow's case in London
A. His research had much influence on social equality.
B. Modern multi-crises are simpler than past problems.
C. Historical crises may result in urban planning innovations.
D. Cholera outbreaks had been controlled in the 19th century.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. The Essence of“Do No Harm” Approach
B. The Advantages of Sustainable Development
C. The Historical Roots of Regenerative Urbanism
D. The Solution of Regenerative Urbanism to Crises

At times, we might set unrealistic expectations for ourselves based on other people's standards. 36 Whenever we want to do something, it has to be done just right. Here are some ways you can stop being so hard on yourself.
One of the best ways to stop being hard on yourself is to understand the roots of your perfectionism. For some, it might be that they never got the support they needed growing up. 37 Take some time for yourself to really think about what your perfectionism means.
38 . Find someone you trust that you can talk to about your struggles. This could be a friend, family member, co-worker, or even a therapist. Additionally, take time for yourself every day. Turn off your phone, put your computer away, and spend some time alone. Doing this will allow you to come back to the world feeling ready to take on anything.
Another step is to set up a positive inner voice. You can do this by saying things like,“You' re doing just fine, don't worry.” You might be surprised at how much power this simple act has. 39 .
Finally, write down your worries. By getting them down on paper, you' ll find that they don't seem as daunting as before. And if you still can't shake that feeling of not being good enough 40 It feels good to get all of your thoughts out even if it seems like no one else will read them.
A. For others, it might be their fear of failure.
B. Keep writing until you feel calmer or clearer.
C. Unrealistic expectations can drive us to achieve more.
D. This is particularly the case when it comes to perfectionism.
E. You might have more confidence and overlook your mistakes.
F. Remember that mistakes are part of growth, not a reflection of your worth.
G. Meanwhile, you can seek support from others and take time to relieve yourself.

A Life-Saving Hero
My wife's job took her out of town a lot and I needed some company. So one day, I went to the local animal-rescue center. The little cocker spaniel(可卡猎犬) trembling in a cage caught my eye right away. She had scared eyes and I could tell she longed to be picked up and hugged.I gently petted her soft fur, and to my surprise, she stopped shaking. That was that. I filled out the paperwork and took my new dog—— Honey home.
I'd had her only a couple of weeks, but Honey and I quickly became close friends. She followed me like a shadow from the very first day. She loved sitting on my lap. We often went to the backyard, where I picked up a ball and threw it. I sat down to watch Honey race after the ball. We had great fun together.
That October morning last year I decided to take Honey with me while I ran some errands(差事). She jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat. I got behind the wheel and started the car. We lived in a remote area up in the hills outside San Rafael, surrounded by tall redwoods. We had to drive up the mountain at a low speed to get to our driveway, which was barely wide enough for one car and ended at a steep cliff.
I turned around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to protect my eyes. Suddenly, the car slipped in the soft soil and rolled down the valley.I heard a horrible crash. A giant branch plunged (扎进) through the roof and hit my leg. We landed upside down. I was stuck. I looked over to find Honey. She was still in the passenger seat. She seemed scared but was not hurt.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I knew I had to do something to save us. As I watched Honey fade out of my view, my thoughts started to wander off.

W: That's a good picture of you.
M: Yes,I look quite slim.
W: The beach looks fantastic.
M: Yes, and we also had a great time in the mountains and we stayed in a really nice hotel. We’ ll probably go back there next year.

M: That was a great landing.
W: Yes,I won't be afraid of flying next time.
M: That's good because I'm not keen on going on that ship you mentioned. And there's a four-hour train journey to get to the port.

M: I hope the weather's good for our trip this weekend.
W: There's some rainy weather forecast for tomorrow, but it should brighten up again bySaturday.
M: Good. It'd be a shame if it stayed cloudy.

M: I'm really late for my dentist appointment and I nced to go to the bank.
W: You’ ll have time to go to the bank afterwards.
M: Yes, but I also need to pick up my suit from the dry cleaner's.
W: Don't worry! I' ll get that for you.

W: I still don't see why you attended that lecture. It was irrelevant to your field of study. You probably had no idea what the lecturer was talking about.
M: You' re wrong. I caught on very quickly. Professor Brighton was very good at putting his ideas across.

M: Are you sure you' re ready to go back to work
W: Yes, Eddie is 18 months old now. It's time.
M: OK. Let's look at some nurseries, then.
W: I' ve already found a few. This one is just a small place.
M: That's good. There will be fewer strangers for Eddie to get used to.
W: Here are the details.
M: Hmm. The nursery looks nice. We’ ll have to look at our financial situation.
W:I agree, but I'd like to take Eddie there if we can.

W: You say the reservation was for today and it was for a non-smoking double room with anInternet connection, Mr. Smith How was that made, by telephone
M: My secretary booked it online. She received the reservation number by email. Are you sure you can't find it A single room would do, if necessary.
W: This happens now and then with Internet reservations. However, we will upgrade you to a family room at no extra charge, but that will have only wireless Internet, not a normal wired connection.
M: Well, my laptop doesn't have wireless, but I'm sure I could buy an adapter somewhere nearby.

W: Hello, how may I help you
M: Well, I' ve been seeing these yellow boxes in front of houses in my neighborhood. I just wondered what they were for. I noticed your phone number on all of them, so I called. Do you send packages
W: No, sir. We do recycling, but we' re not a business. Gaea's Guardians is a non-profit group. We encourage recycling as a way of protecting the environment.
M: I don't know. I mean it is a good idea. But I really don't read the newspaper every day or anything.
W: We don't come collect newspapers every day! In fact, we only do pickups every other week.
M: Oh, well then maybe I could help. I mean in my neighborhood, there's too much rubbish lying around everywhere. I'd like to help out.

M: I'm sure you know this is just a volunteer position.
W: Yes,I am aware of that.
M: According to your application,I see that you have skills related to photography, storytelling, and typing. Is that right
W: Yes. At Da-an Library,I sometimes read stories to children.
M: Well, here at the Public Library we need a photographer more than a storyteller. What kind of photography did you do
W: I took pictures for library events and also photographed some of the library's local art collection for the website.
M: OK, I' ll fill that in. Are you comfortable with photography and storytelling being your main tasks
W: Actually, I was hoping I could work at the information desk. I like answering people's questions.
M: We can certainly try to arrange that. Now, as for your work schedule, I see you' re available during evenings on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday.
W: Yes, that's right.
M: It also says you can work mornings on the weekends. Is that right
W: Actually,I have to change that part. I found out I can't work Saturday mornings anymore.
M: OK,I' ll erase that. Sunday mornings are still good, though
W: Yes, they' re fine.
M: Do you have any questions for me
W: Yes. Can you send my school a certificate of the hours I work I need to prove that I'm volunteering.
M: Sure, we can do that.

M: Hello, and welcome back to AMC News. I'm Marc Dupris. Tonight,I'm in Barcelona, Spain,a city famous for its buildings, art, food, and culture. But has Barcelona become too famous
In recent years, the number of visitors to this city on the coast has increased rapidly — too rapidly. More than 20 million tourists visit every year, but there are only 1.6 million locals. Even with a smaller number, that would be bad for the city's services.
The effect of this tourism can be scen everywhere. Take Boqueria Food Market, for example. It used to sell fish, meat, and vegetables. Now, though, it has been taken over by tourist restaurants. Barceloneta is even worse. The city's famous beach, which was opened in 1992 as a public space, is so crowded that you can't even sit down.
Twenty years ago, this city was one of the coolest places in Europe and known for its fashion and design. In my eyes, that image has been destroyed.
