They brought him fresh flowers each day. Then something wonderful happened. Martin’s condition started to improve, and he had hope for the future.

Seven years have passed, but I still clearly remember the day when I joined the Red Cross.
It was the summer before I went to high school, and I was volunteering at a blood drive (献血活动). While helping at the event, I had a conversation with some donors (捐献者). 30 Some others said it was their fiftieth time. I didn't have any volunteer experiences in the past. It was then that I began to think seriously about joining the Red Cross.

And a few days later, our school Red Cross Club met to discuss how to help them. 33 In just three weeks, we were able to raise thousands of dollars to help the disaster victims.

There are around 11, 200 charity shops in the UK. You can find quite a few of them on every high street. They are selling mainly second-hand donated goods (商品) to raise money for their parent charities.
Charity shops are a good idea. Every year, charity shops raise more than 295 million. The money goes to help medical research and environmental protection, support sick and poor children, the homeless, mentally and physically disabled people, and many others. Selling second-hand goods prevents them going to landfill (垃圾填埋场). That’s good for the environment. Besides, they provide people chances to work as volunteers. Volunteers in shops can make new friends and learn new skills as they get work experience.
People support charity shops in three ways. Four out of five people have donated to a charity shop. Around two out of three people have bought from a charity shop. And there are about 130, 000 volunteers working in charity shops.
