Look at the picture and the title of the story on page 101. Then make a list of the things that the grandparents have collected.

Sam and Helen's grandparents collect almost everything. There are eight doorbells on their front door!
“This silver doorbell is my favourite,” said Helen. She pushed it and soon Grandpa opened the door.

“Who started collecting doorbells, Grandpa ” asked Sam.
“Your grandma,” he answered. “She loves doorbells.”
“What do you like collecting, Grandpa ” asked Helen.
“I like collecting newspapers.”
They went inside and saw newspapers everywhere.
“Hello children!” called Grandma. “Let's have some tea.”
The children followed her into the living room and saw lots of toys there. There was hardly any space for the children to sit down.
“Whose toys are these ” asked Helen.
“They're ours,” said Grandma. “We both like collecting toys.”
“But remember,” said Grandpa, “we have a lot of free time! You have your school work to do, so you shouldn't spend too much time collecting things!”

1.Sam and Helen's grandparents collect almost everything.

hardly 是副词,意为“几乎不;几乎没有”。注意其具体
用法:(1)通常位于动词的前面或be 动词、助动词、情态动词的后面;
(2)本身具有否定意义,句中不需再使用其他否定词;
(3) 常与any,anything,anyone,anybody等词连用。如:
他的耳朵有些问题,他几乎听不见任何声音。
There is something wrong with his ears. He can hardly hear anything.
瓶子里几乎没有水。
There is hardly any water in the bottle.
hardly 不是由hard 加后缀 ly演变而来的,所以与hard 在含义上没有任何联系。hard 有形容词和副词两种词性:作形容词时,一般意为“坚硬的;难懂的;艰难的;辛苦的”;作副词时,一般意为“努力地;猛烈地。”如:
对于一个小女孩来说,回答这个问题太难了。

space 在此句中意为“空间”,是不可数名词,指有限的、未被占据的地方,可与room互换使用。
这个书架上还有些空间放书。

【拓展】room的用法:
Room 也可意为“空间”,此时其是不可数名词,表示人或物体所占的“空间或场所”;其另一意思是“房间;室”,这时其是可数名词。如:
车里有我的位子吗?Is there any room for me in the car
这房间不是我的。 This room is not mine.

too much 意为“太多”,修饰不可数名词。其也可以作副词性短语,修饰动词;还可以作名词性短语,用作主语或宾语。如:

much too 意为“太;非常”,用来加强语气,修饰形容词或副词。如:
天气实在太冷了。 It's much too cold.
too many 也意为“太多”,但其后接可数名词的复数形式。如:
他有太多书了。He has too many books.

A The simple past tense
We use the simple past tense to talk about things that happened or did not happen in the past.

We use personal pronouns to replace nouns that we have already talked about.
We have subject pronouns and object pronouns.
