Dear Sister Mary,
One of my friends is going to have a birthday party.I don't know what gift to choose, and a
friend is giving her a gift that costs more than 150 yuan! That's too expensive for me.
What should I do?
Catherine
Dear Catherine,
A good gift does not need to be too expensive. There are some ways to find out what she really
wants. You could try remembering things she said she really likes or wants in the past.If you
can't think of anything, try asking her other friends for ideas! If that doesn't work, you could
get her something special that reminds her of your friendship. It could be a photo album(相册)
with your photos. She would love a nice gift like that.
Sister Mary
Dear Sister Mary,
I share a bedroom and a desk with my sister.
When we study at the desk together, she distracts(使分心)me because she is noisy.I try to

any advice for me?

2.Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures from their
parents. Most students are always told by their parents to study harder and better so that they
can have a wonderful life in the future.Though this may be a good idea for those very bright
students,it can have terrible results for many students who are not gifted enough. Many of
them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have their parents lose
hope.Such students feel that they are hated by everyone else they meet and they don't want to
go to school any longer. They became dropouts.
It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do
not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that
it is the teachers' work to help their children. To make matters worse,a lot of parents send their
children to those schools opening in the evenings on weekends ﹣ ﹣ ﹣ they only help the
students to pass the exams and never teach them any real sense of the world.
Many Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students' hair to their
clothes and things in the school bags.Child psychologists now think that such strict rules are
harmful to the feelings of the students.Almost 40% of the students said that no one had taught
them how to get on with others, how to tell right from wrong and how to show love and care for
others,even for their parents.

4.Eating Habits
An important question about eating out is who pays for the meal.If a friend of yours asks you
to have lunch with him,you may say something like this, "I'm afraid it'll have to be some place
cheap,as I have very little money." The other person may say,"OK,I'll meet you at McDonald's.
"
This means that the two agree to go Dutch, that is,each person pays for himself. He may
also say, "Oh,no.I want to take you to lunch at Johnson's",or "I want you to try the steak (牛
排) there. It's great." This means the person wants to pay for both of you.If you feel friendly
towards this person, you can go with him and you needn't pay for the meal. You may just say, "
Thank you. That would be very nice."
American customs (风俗) about who pays for dates (约会)are much the same as in other
parts of the world. In the old days,American women wanted men to pay for all the meals. But,
today,a university(大学)girl or a woman in the business world will usually pay her way during
the day.If a man asks her to dinner or a dance outside the working hours,it means "come as my
guest (客人). "So as you can see,it is a polite thing to make the question clear at the very
