Mavuram Mallikarjun Reddy is the only farming person from India to receive “Jagjivan Ram Abhinav Kisan Puruskar” from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The award was given to him for the growing of different types of crops through organic farming.
The journey began in 2014 when Mallikarjun left his software job. The decision wasn’t too sudden. When he visited the hospital, he heard patients and doctors talking about the effects of harmful chemicals on food and milk. It was alarming to see how we pollute ourselves and the environment. The last straw was the death of his friend’s daughter from cancer. “I didn’t want to offer harmful food to my family and I started the change,” says Mallikarjun.
Farming wasn’t new to his family. He took over the land that his farmer father owned, and began running a semi—organic farm with the rice crop. As the results were not as expected, he grew the rice crop in drip irrigation (滴灌) and then attempted hybrid farming. He then practiced the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) farming methodology to increase the productivity of rice. If regular farming requires an investment (投资额) of $600 for 6,000 kg of rice, Mallikarjun invests only $300 to obtain the same output. Efforts by Mallikarjun in rainwater harvesting through lakes and open wells for increased groundwater and raising awareness among other farmers of the misuse of pesticides and field management have also been appreciated. He also recommends using techniques researched by agricultural universities to deal with stubble (残梗) in the fields instead of burning stubble.
Mallikarjun manages the fields on his own, without employees, and he follows a 12-hour work schedule—awakening at 4 a. m. to feed sheep, goats and cows before going to the farm. The software engineer-turned-farmer has also launched an organic shop, where he sells the produce of farmers from his village. “Organic farming helps the environment,” he describes. “Small farmers must start small to maintain organic agriculture and their livelihoods as well.”
4. How did Mallikarjun probably feel when he visited the hospital in 2014
A. Puzzled. B. Curious. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
5. What do Mallikarjun’s farming approaches reveal according to paragraph 3
A. The value of traditional methods.
B. The importance of high investments.
C. The disadvantages of organic farming.
D The effectiveness of innovative techniques.
6. What does Mallikarjun intend to promote through his efforts in paragraph 4
A. Profit-driven farming. B. Crop waste recycling.
C. Personalized farming techniques. D. Eco-friendly agricultural practices.
7. Which of the following best describes Mallikarjun
A. Creative and caring. B. Energetic and patient.
C. Honest and passionate. D. Conventional and serious.

If you wanted your child to become a top athlete as an adult, the best way may not be what you think. It seems logical that someone who started at an early age and focused on one thing would become the best at it. But it turns out that most champions don’t follow the path of early specialization.
Research of the past 20 years has steadily revealed that kids who have tried different sports, on the whole, go further in the long term than kids who have specialized early. The researchers reviewed 51 international studies on expert athlete performance. Taken together, these studies looked at the developmental history of 6,096 adult and youth athletes, including 772 of the world’s top performers.
Their analyses showed that the majority of world-class athletes were multisport athletes in childhood and adolescence (青春期). In many cases, the top adult athletes also started their main sport later and practiced it for fewer hours during childhood than many of their peers (同龄人). They also generally progressed more slowly. In contrast, their peers who specialized early often found more success at the youth level. However, that’s where most of them peaked. When it came to long-term success on the international stage, the late-specialization kids were much better represented.
The multisport approach works for a couple of reasons. One of them appears to be better skills transfer between different sports. Raducanu’s former coach said that when she’s learning a new skill, she can pick things up very quickly. Also, trying more sports in childhood helps kids find a sport that suits their talent and interest best. Plus, it can reduce the risk of injury and mental burnout, Given the research, why do we keep pushing kids to specialize at a young age One of the major reasons is that so many of us have lived for so long with the idea that early specialization produces the best results.
If we want kids to reach their best potential over the long term, we need to encourage them to try as many different sports and activities in childhood as practically possible.
8. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The purpose of the research. B. The result of the research.
C. The process of the research. D. The participants of the research.
9. Why does the multisport approach work
A. It allows kids to acquire more training hours.
B. It helps kids to become famous at a young age.
C. It makes kids more competitive in their childhood.
D. It enables skills in one sport to be applied to another.
10. Why do people still push kids into early sports specialization
A. Some wrong ideas are deeply rooted.
B. Kids can develop better in the long run.
C. It’s casier for kids to find their favorite sports early.
D. It helps reduce kids’ risk of injury and mental burnout.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Youth Sport: A Profitable Business
B. The Road to Becoming a Top Athlete
C. Multisport Approach: The Key to Success
D. The Benefit of Early Specialization in Sports
D
A famous travel writer, pick Iyer, recently wrote of his experience in the deep south of the world. The visit, he said, “awakens you to the environmental concerns of the world, and you go home with important questions for your conscience (良知) as well as radiant memories.” Iyer isn’t alone. This response is widespread, known in the industry as Antarctic ambassador ship.
In Antarctic a, crowding, environmental impact and emissions are the most pressing issues. While 100,000 tourists a year is tiny by global tourism standards, and visits are concentrated in highly sensitive ecological areas for only a few months per year. There are no residents to disturb (other than local wildlife), because there’s no host community to protest if visitor numbers get too high.
Even so, strong protections are in place. In accordance with the Antarctic Treaty System — the set of international agreements signed by countries with an Antarctic presence or an interest — tourism operators based in those nations have to apply for permits and follow strict environmental regulations.
For instance, to avoid introducing new species, tourists have to follow rules such as disinfecting their boots and vacuuming their pockets before setting foot on the ice, and keeping a set distance from wildlife.
Almost all Antarctic cruise owners belong to the International Association of Antarctic a Tour Operators, the peak body that manages Antarctic tourism. For the first time this year, operators have to report their overall fuel consumption as part of IAATO’s efforts to make the industry more climate-friendly. Some operators are now using hybrid vessels (合成船舶) that can run partly on electric propulsion (推进) for short periods, reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
If you’re one of the tourists going to Antarctica this summer, enjoy the experience — but go with care. Be aware that no trip south comes without environmental cost and use this knowledge to make clear-eyed decisions about your activities both in Antarctic a and once you’re safely back home.
12. What’s the function of Paragraph 1
A. To introduce the famous writer pick layer. B. To show how amazing to be Antarctic Ambassador.
C. To arouse public interest in Antarctic tourism. D. To show concerns for Antarctic environment.
13. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “vacuuming” in Paragraph 4
A. Protecting. B. Emptying. C. Staining. D. Filling.
14. Which is true about the operator this year according to the passage
A. They needn’t report overall fuel assumption.
B. They made no effort to be climate-friendly.
C. Hybrid vessels are a good choice to reduce CO2.
D. Polar travel can be stopped right away by the company.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards Antarctic tourism
A. Positive. B. Neutral. C. Negative. D. Unclear.

Then she was distracted by the storm outside her window. a different storm though to the storm in her mind. She had always been top in her class in English and Computer Science, but mathematics was an entirely different story. This shadow hung over her like a never ending storm, threatening to ruin her dream of a future in the computer science at university. Sometimes, she even longed for the end-of-year exam to prove her efforts.
She opened her notebook to a page filled with half-finished equations (方程式). “Why can’t I get this ” she thought, frustration welling up inside her. Her teachers had high expectations for her, especially after her excellent performance in her other subjects. But just the word, “mathematics,” made her tremble inside.
You can, if you think you can, Janice thought of her father’s words and repeated to herself. She tried to study, but when she would open a textbook, only to find herself picking up her phone and looking through social media for hours. “I’m rubbish at math.” Janice whispered.
Janice’s father came sitting down beside her. “Yes, we know you are rubbish at maths. but one day you will tell me you ‘were’ rubbish at maths once.” he said quietly, and with feeling. “Janice, you’ve always been a fighter. Remember what I told you You can, if you think you can. It’s not just about believing it; it is about you wanting to believe it, it’s also about proving it to yourself. You just have to take that first step toward believing you can do this.”
“You’ve got a sharp mind, Janice.” her teacher, Mr. Thompson, said one day after she finally solved a particularly tricky maths problem. “You just need to trust yourself.” Janice was starting to believe in her father’s words.

13. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “vacuuming” in Paragraph 4

One evening, Janice had been crying for more than ten minutes about failing her mid-term exam in mathematics. She sat down at her desk and stared at the pile of mathematics textbooks in front of her.

The end-of-year exam finally came.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Janice began to put her heart and soul into mathematics. She made a detailed study plan, setting aside specific hours each day for math. Whenever she felt like reaching for her phone, she would recall her father’s words and Mr. Thompson’s encouragement. She dedicated herself to working through piles of practice problems, and gradually, the previously confusing equations started to make sense. She also joined a study group with classmates who were also struggling with math, and they motivated each other. With every small success, her confidence grew.
The end-of-year exam finally came. Janice entered the exam room feeling a mix of nervousness and determination. She took a deep breath and focused on the questions. As she worked through the paper, she found that the knowledge she had painstakingly built up over the months was coming to her aid. As it turned out, she passed the math exam with flying colors. She ran home, eager to share the news with her father, finally able to say, “I was rubbish at maths once.”
