On Friday March 3, 18-year-old Jordan Stolz became the youngest person ever to win a world speed skating
gold medal.
Stolz is from Kewaskum, Wisconsin. He began skating on a small pond in his family’s backyard. When he
was five years old, he saw speed skaters at the 2010 WinterOlympics on TV. He suddenly became very interested
第 4页/共 13页
in learning to skate fast.
By the time he was in fifth grade, Stolz had won national championships. In high school, he went to school
online so that he could train for up to six hours a day.
Last November, Stolz earned two gold medals during the 2022-23 ISU Speed Skating WorldCup, making him
the youngest male to win a WorldCup race. Then, in February, Stolz won four gold medals at the 2023 World
Junior Speed Skating Championships. The medals were for 500-meter, 1,000-meter, and 5,000-meter races, and the
team sprint.
Stolz's coach, Bob Corby, says one of Stolz's greatest talents is the way he is able to take the corners in the
curving (弯曲的) track at high speeds. "Everyone is extremely impressed with the way he goes around corners,"
says Mr Corby.
That ability helped him out at the speed skating championships in early March. In the 500-meter race, Stolz
passed his opponent, YumaMurakami, on the final curve. It only took him 34.10 seconds to cover a distance longer
than five football fields.
The win made Stolz the youngest person ever to win a world speed skating gold medal. In the 1,000-meter
race, he defeated Thomas Krol of the Netherlands, who won the Olympic gold medal for the race in 2022. In the
1,500-meter race, he defeated both Krol and Kjeld Nuis, who won the Olympic gold medal for the event in 2018
and 2022.
Stolz's speed and strength have amazed many people. One of his opponents, Canadian skater Laurent Dubreuil,
says he has been trying to imitate the way Stolz goes around corners. Laurent took second place in the 500-meter
race. He says Stolz's skating style is "just something that I don't think I’ve seen in a speed skater before".
24. What aroused Stolz’s interest in speed skating
A. A small icy pond.
B. A sports TV program.
C. A winter skating game.
D. An encounter with a special skater.
25. What is one of Stolz’s outstanding talents

B. He can cover a distance of five football fields.
C. He can go around the corner at high speeds.

There is no such thing as a "safe" level of drinking, with increased consumption of alcohol associated with
poorer brain health, according to a new study.
In an observational study, researchers from the University of Oxford studied the relationship between the
self-reported alcohol intak(e摄入量)of some 25,000 people in the UK, and their brain scans. The researchers noted
that drinking had an effecton the brain's gray matter—regions in the brain that make up "important bits where
information is processed," according to lead author Anya Topiwala,a senior clinical researcher at Oxford.
"The more people drank, the less the volume of their gray matter,"Topiwalasaid via email. "Brain volume(容
量)reduces with age and more severely with dementia(痴呆). Smaller brain volume also predicts worse
performance on memory testing," she explained. "While alcohol only made a small contribution to this(0.8%), it
was a greater contribution than other 'changeable' risk factors," she said, explaining that changeable risk factors are
"ones you can do something about, in contrast to aging."
The team also investigated whether certain drinking patterns, beverage(饮料)types and other health
conditions made a difference to the impact of alcohol on brain health. They found that there was no "safe" level of
drinking—meaning that consumingany amount of alcohol was worse than not drinking it. They also found no
evidence that the type of drink—such as wine, spirits or beer—affectedthe harm done to the brain.
However, certain characteristics, such as high blood pressure, obesity or binge -drinking(酗酒), could put
people at higher risk, researchers added.
28. How was the study developed
A. By comparing people and the researchers.
第 6页/共 13页
B. By comparing brain and health.
C. By comparing alcohol intake and brain scans.
D. By comparing information and gray matter.
29. What is the result of the research
A. Drinking alcohol can cause reducing of brain volume.
B. Drinking alcohol can cause increasing of brain volume.
C. Drinking wine have more impact on brain.
D. Drinking spirits have more impact on brain.
30. What does the underlined word "consuming" probably mean in Paragraph 4
A. buyingB. drinking
C. sellingD. making
31. Which of the following people have a higher risk when drinking alcohol
A. People drinking more types.B. People forming some habits.
C. People with less chance to drink.D. People with high blood pressure.

Joseph Conrad, a famous English novelist, said that his goal as a writer was “to make you hear, to make you
feel, and above all, to make you see. That, and no more, is everything”. A good short story tries to give the reader a
sense of the actual experience. Often it leaves a single sharp impression to be turned over and over in the mind.
After finishing the story, the reader should have something to think about: the humor of life, its ironies (嘲笑), or
the unpredictability of human behavior.
In order to read a short story with full understanding, the reader must approach the content on two levels. The
first and most obvious level is conveyed through the plot. Plot refers to the sequence of events, to the actions of the
characters and the situations in which they are involved. Toexplain the plot, then, is to tell what happened in the
story and to whom. In some short stories, plot is the dominating element. In other short stories, plot plays a very
minor role.
In Hemingway’s story,The Old Man and the Sea, however, we must approach the content on another level.
The impact of the story comes from the insight it gives us into the needs and desires of youth and old age.
Tounderstand and appreciate the story, the reader must be able to identify its general topic or theme. The next
step is to identify the device by which the author comments on this theme. Finally, the reader should be able to
explain the insights which the author has given into the theme.
第 7页/共 13页
Readers cannot appreciate a short story fully unless they react not only to what has been said but also to how it
has been said. They must look for style and structure. Style grows out of the writer’s own personality and can be
seen in the choice of words and phrases, the arrangement of sentences, the rhythm and tone. Structure refers to the
architecture of the story, the way in which the details are selected and arranged to produce the desired effect.
32. Which is mentioned about a good short story after it is finished reading in the first paragraph
A. The wise fun life carries.B. Laughters.
C. Unexpected attack.D. Actual experience of life.
33. The author takesThe Old Man and the Sea to explain that ________.
A. plot is the most important role in understanding a short story fully
B. readers can understand a story well themselves by reading
C. we can’t approach the content of a short story on either of the two levels
D. we can approach the book content on another level other than plot level
34. Which of the following helps us fully appreciate a short story
A. The style and structure of a story.
B. The reader’s own personality.
C. The arrangement of words and sentences.
D. The comments the author says about the book.
35. Joseph Conrad would most probably agree that ________.
A. a good story writer inspires with various techniques
B. a good story may as well be attached with an audiovisual version
C. a good story doesn’t relate to feelings of the readers
D. a good story writer employs pictures or images
