Around 1,500 endangered and rare languages are at a high risk of being lost in the next
century, according to a study published on Thursday in Nature Ecology and Evolution.
The study found that around half of the world’s 7,000 documented languages are
endangered. It also found that greater road density was associated with higher risk of
endangerment.
“It’s as if roads are helping dominant languages overwhelm other smaller languages,”
co-author and professor at the Australian National University Lindell Bromham said in a press
release.
Greater endangerment was also associated with higher average years of schooling,
suggesting that formal education contributes to loss of language diversity. “Mainstream education
in a dominant language can lead to loss of competence in minority languages. We urgently need to
invest in bilingual (双语的) education and develop programs that allow communities to bring their
heritage language into schools, to make sure the language stays strong and is passed on to future
generations,” Bromhall told CBS News.
The study found that unless there is intervention (干预), the world could lose at least one
language per month, with language loss three times more in the next 40 years. The authors
recommended “urgent investment” in community-based programs like bilingual education
programs and language documentation. And some of the recommendations that experts made 20
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页
years ago are still the same: governments should remove bans on languages and adults should
encourage children to speak other languages — including their native language.
“Each language is a reflection on the creativity and inventiveness of human minds, a
beautiful and fascinating solution to complex communication challenges,” Bromham told CBS
News. “Most importantly, for many people, language symbolizes cultural identity and belonging.
Many groups mourn (悼念) the decline of unique languages and long for competency in languages
no longer spoken.”
24.What was related with higher risk of language endangerment
A.Less road density.
B.Unpopularity among language learners.
C.Greater competence of small languages.
D.Higher average years of schooling.
25.What should government do to preserve language diversity

B.Create more language education programs.

Hard work really does pay off. Scientists find that perseverance(坚持不懈)leads to better
grades and higher achievements in school.
“Being passionate(热情的)is not enough to ensure academic success,” says researchers,
who ought of "courage" as a key to success. This is also regarded as effort in reaching long-term

goals, and determination to continue one's efforts in spite of hardships.
Researchers think that the finding could help create new training to help children develop
the skill and help ensure their future success.
Researchers from the Academy of Finland studied more than 2,000 students from Helsinki.
They were followed through their academic career from 12 to 16, the sixth grade until the ninth
grade in local school years. Researchers found that the factor that best predicts courage was
related to goals, with previous academic achievements playing no role in developing the skill.
Professor Katariina Salmela-Aro, who led the study, said, “Courage means a young person
is really interested in his or her studies and does not give up easily. A key element of courage is
high perseverance when facing difficulties and hardships. The important finding is that these
factors are the key to success and well-being. Our study shows the power of courage.”
Professor Salmela-Aro also thinks it is important to develop new practices and qualities to
improve courage in teenagers. She added, "Young people should see everyday school work as part
of their life in a broader context and establish achievable goals for themselves. Schools must also
serve as a place where it is safe to fail and learn to deal with setbacks. One must not be
discouraged by setbacks, but draw strength and new energy from them.
28.What can we learn about the research

C.It meets many difficulties D.It follows 2,000 students abroad.
29.What should students do according to the researchers

thousands of years ago on the basis of practical needs of agricultural. Ancient Chinese people used
it to guide agricultural production, explain special climate signs and even come up with healthy
living tips. Last year, the 24 solar terms was added to UNESCO's world cultural heritage list(联合

from Southwest China's Guizhou Province.

would really surprise me if the work had not aroused great interest among Chinese people. The 24
solar terms is a deeply rooted concept that covers the essence of Chinese wisdom. However, only
a small portion of people know all the names or the correct order of those terms. My intention is to
increase Chinese people’s self-awareness to learn more about our traditional fine culture. Actually,
the 24 solar terms work is only a part of my whole design program ‘Charm China’, which I started
a year ago.” Shi told China Daily.

Thinking about the past week, did any of you forget where you put your phone Did you
have a word stuck on the tip of your tongue You couldn’t remember the name of the movie a
friend recommended What is going on here Is your memory failing
It’s not. 36 Despite memory’s extraordinary, necessary and common presence in
our lives, it is far from perfect. Our brains are not designed to remember people’s names, to
remember to do something later or to catalogue everything we experience. 37 Even in
the smartest heads, memory is likely to be wrong. So what determines what we remember and
what we forget
38 Your memory is not a video camera recording a constant stream of every sight
and sound you're exposed to. You can only remember what you are concerned about. Accordingly,
one major reason for forgetting what someone said or where you parked your car is lack of
attention.
The other has something to do with stimulus(刺激物). For example, the tip of the tongue is
one of the most common experiences of memory failure. 39 Why does this happen The
tip of the tongue can occur when there’s only partial or weak activation(激活)of the nerve cells
that connect to the word you’re looking for.
So when you walk into a room and suddenly don’t know why you’re there, you’re not
going crazy or getting Alzheimer’s disease, and your memory isn’t terrible. Go back to the room
you were in before you landed in this one and imagine the clues that were there. 40
A.One necessary factor is attention.
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页
B.It’s doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
C.These imperfections are simply the factory settings.
D.Our brains tend to remember what is meaningful and forget what isn’t.

F.It will instantly deliver what you were completely confused about a moment ago.
G.Memory is amazing and is essential for the functioning of almost everything we do.

condition, felt 50 by taking a medical test that may help others in the future. This is

For nearly four months, the little dog, Indiana, fortunately survived in the woods with a
wounded shoulder. She'd been mistaken for a wolf and shot while running wild with her mother,
Dakota. An animal control officers said they were the most strongly bonded pair he'd even seen
and the two dogs refused to leave each other's side, even while trying to escape being caught.
As a result of the gunshot, Indiana lost both her leg and her mother, for the two were sent to
different adoption groups. While Indiana was learning to walk on three legs down south, Dakota
was 1,000 miles north in New England. The first adoption family returned her two days later.
They said the dog couldn't bond with humans, kept them up all night and wasn't suitable to live in
a home. Eventually, Dakota found her forever home with me on Long Island. I have experience
with such dogs, and Dakota, a husky (哈 士 奇 犬 ), just needed attention and someone who
understood how to approach her. I always let her come up to me. I gave her the time and space to
explore and feel comfortable. She soon let me put a belt on her and would lie on the sofa with me
quietly.
When I, accidentally, read the post of Dakota's first adopter, it mentioned that the little dog

Dakota had been running with was shot, and, I thought, killed. I'm a broadcast news journalist, so
I always did some survey and, by chance, heard a story from a South Carolina TV news outlet
about a dog that recently had her front leg cut off because of an old gunshot wound. And anyone
who wanted to adopt Indiana was required to have a six-foot fence because she kept jumping over
the one at the care shelter in South Carolina. There was no mistaking it—she looked exactly like
Dakota. Indiana wasn't killed by the gunshot, just badly injured.

67.One possible version:
While Dakota loved me and her new home, she still missed her kid. She would utter mournful
howls whenever I took her out for walks in the woods. It seemed as if she was calling for her
puppy to come back. The exact scene made me heart-broken, and I took action all at once,
determined to reunite mother and pup. I called the TV station, asking for conditions about the little
dog, only to be told that Indiana was receiving medical treatment for falling on the ground when
jumping over the fence.
I decided to bring three-legged Indiana to my home. Instantly they got reunited, Dakota
couldn't stop licking her puppy's face. Happy and excited, the two dogs were wagging their tails
wildly. The heart-warming scene moved anyone on the spot. Dakota has since stopped her
sorrowful howls while Indiana has never tried to jump over the fence. These once-separated dogs
played together, chasing each other around the room and slept together with their noses resting on
each other. If there is to be any devotion, it will come through any species.
