People in Bath, England, celebrate the Jane Austen Festival every year.
Jane Austen is an English writer who was born in Steventon, England, in 1775. Austen was mostly educated
at home, where she learned how to play the piano, draw, and write creatively. She read a lot and later came to enjoy
social events such as parties, dances and balls. She disliked the busy life of towns and preferred the countryside,
where she took to taking long walks.
In 1801, Jane, her parents and sister moved to Bath. Four years later, her father passed away and the family
soon became poor. Austen and her family moved several times until finally settling at a small house in Chawton. It
was in this house that she wrote most of her works.
In March of 1817, Austen got serious health problems and had to stop writing. She died in July of the same
year, at the age of only 41.
Pride and Prejudice(《傲慢与偏见》), published in 1813, is the most famous novel by Austen. It tells a
romantic story between a young woman Elizabeth Bennet and a tall, rich, and handsome man, Mr. Darcy. It has
been adapted(改编) into films, television series and musicals.

Fighting to Be Heard
Chinese singer Zhou Shen has become more popular after appearing on the TV show I Am a Singer. He
impressed(给┄┄留下深刻印象) people not only with his unusual recording(录制) methods—he has performed in
his bedroom twice due to the pandemic—but also with his singing itself.
Zhou performed different styles of singing on the show. He covered a song by popular virtual(虚拟的)
singers Luo Tianyi and Yan He, as well as sang songs with Suzhou Pingtan and Russian elements(元素).
A musician said Zhou has “come out from the cocoon(茧) and become a butterfly”. It has taken Zhou a long
time to do so. Zhou loved singing when he was a little boy. However, his voice didn’t change like other boys
during his teenage years. It still sounded like a girl’s voice—thin and high. The children about his age laughed at
him and he refused to sing in public. “I sang in my bedroom secretly,” he said.
At 18, he sang online without showing his face. Some people were very interested in this unknown singer. On
one of his birthdays, he agreed to show his face. However, when they found out that he was a boy, some of them
made fun of him. Zhou felt bad about this, but later he got the chance to sing the theme song for the movie Big Fish
and Begonia(《大鱼海棠》), which turned out to be a big success.
After that, Zhou appeared on several TV talent shows. In his own words, “It was to give my voice a chance.”
He even wore women’s clothes on the show—the Masked Singer. “It wasn’t for hype(炒作),” he said. “I just
wanted people to focus on my singing rather than my gender(性别).”
